Woodworking: Making A Bench

2024 ж. 23 Мам.

To balance out the new bedroom furniture I've created in my previous videos, I really needed something for the foot of the bed. I designed a little bench that will definitely look perfect in that space but also be a great place for me to be able to sit down and put my shoes on in the mornings. I took some inspiration from some Japanese designs and incorporated a tusked mortise and tenon joint as well as some exposed wedged mortises for accents in the bench top. This was a challenging build but the finished product turned out amazing! Check out the video for yourself and then head over to my website to pick up the plans to make your own!

  • There are times when the phrase "as usual" is truly insincere. But not in this case. Drew, that bench is some beautiful work, as usual! That bedroom suite is absolutely gorgeous! Looking forward to seeing what you produce next.

  • The stretcher being installed upside down reminds me of so many of my projects: After much planning and measuring, I will carefully and meticulously install something completely opposite of what I had intended 😩 Typical! And because I installed it so well, it’s a pain in the rear to undo it to fix my boneheaded mistake. I guess if you’re going to do something then commit to it and go all the way 😅

  • Howdy Drew! Beautiful bench! I'm loving the theme, and the elements you included. Interesting 'red stain' you added there, shows real commitment to the project! I do wonder about the direction of the exposed wedged mortises, in line with the seat grain instead of across, risking wedging it apart? Nah, given the tightness of walnut grain, it'll probably be OK. And if they do split the seat, maybe the neighbor will have another slab for some trivial purpose, like a display mantel for his loved ones' ashes or something, giving you replacement material! 😂 Love your work, dude! I got about 47 different ideas for my own projects, always the mark of a good video! Cheers!

    @billparrish4385@billparrish43853 ай бұрын
    • Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Yeah, the wedges don't really provide that much pressure against the edges of the mortise. They just splay out the ends to fill it out. Definitely not enough to split a 1.5" thick slab

  • The bench might just be the best bedroom piece you have made! Absolutely beautiful! Because I know you love suggestions from freeloaders 😁, I would LOVE to see a video on how you lay out the parts of your project onto the wood. I know that's something I'm still trying to get better at. Keep up the amazing work, and the amazing bloopers! 😄

  • I made a walnut bench for my older brother for Christmas. It had round tenons. Out of all the tools in my workshop, I think the one that will cause the biggest injury will be a chisel. Seems like every time I pick it up, I get a cut.

  • You don’t know how timely this is. I’ve been contemplating making new altars for my church and was considering all if these same design elements. Through wedged tenons on top and a stretcher with the tusk tenons on the sides. Now I have a step by step guide. 😊

  • Nicely done. I always enjoy your videos. One item I noticed, the wedged tenons in the top are generally done perpendicular to the grain of the piece being attached, not parallel. That way the force from the wedge isn't trying to split along the grain. Hopefully you won't have any issues with it in the future.

    @user-kw9jf2qx4i@user-kw9jf2qx4i3 ай бұрын
    • Yeah, someone else said that too. They're just cosmetic and aren't subjecting the top to any force that will cause a split, so in this case, I should be okay.
