From Rust To This? Restoring The Undercarriage On A Lexus LX470 Landcruiser
DIY frame restoration on my Lexus LX470 Landcruiser, in video format? Yes. In this video I do the best job I can do to breath some new life into the undercarriage of my Landcruiser. Rust is a very serious thing in Canada, I wanted to get to somewhat of a fresh start before it got too bad. I understand this isn't a foolproof method, but this should at least buy me a little more time. I removed most of the loose rust with a wire wheel on a drill, hit all major rust with a reformer product, and followed it up by applying POR15. Which for those that done know is a pretty popular paint over rust product with quite a lot of very good proof of result. I am really happy with how this turned out and to get working on other Landcruiser projects. Much love.

Do I get bumpers/winch/air lockers for this thing or do I leave it stock body? Opinions below kings🙂
Def stock body, some lights maybe behind the front lower grill, ditch the factory rear electric lockers and get front and rear ARB air lockers. Should be enough for "camping". Love the wheels and tire combo set up btw!
Slap some ARB armor on that bad boy!!
Dissent armor if you want to throw money at something
OEM plus IMO. I'd do some undercarriage protection, skid plates, whatever, and call it done. Seems more unique to be a bit more restrained.
Keep it standard.👍😎✌
An incredible job on what can only be described as a labor intensive process. Awesome
Thank you Jeff! Hoping it holds up for the long haul
Just came across your channel, the amount of effort you put into your videos doesn't go unnoticed! Great quality
So peaceful watching this
Glad you like it Dillan!🖤
Top tip, if you can use a paint on brake calipers you can use it on brake rotor hats as well, while you're in there
Most definitely man! I got new slotted rotors to help with towing towing a minuscule amount haha
Just what I needed to complete this beautiful Saturday 🤙🏼🔥🔥
Glad you enjoyed it friend!🤝🤝
Cheers from Baja California (Tijuana). Owner of 99’ Land Cruiser and this video is pure gold. Thanks for sharing.
Wearing a Moonswatch and spraying rust reformer. You're a mad lad and I like it.
Haha garage watch does garage things
Painful amount of detailed work you are going through. Fantastic job, not everyone has the heart to do what you did in this video. Keep up the great work!
LOVE LOVE LOVE soundtrack, excellent choice! No trap crap here! No sir!
Thank you! Glad you enjoy it!
Great work and really respect how much love you give to your cars. Great motivation to keep clean my LX450. I will do this soon!
Thats what I like to hear man! Thank you for watching, much love!
I'm in the midst of restoring my Lexus, so great to see your work. That rust reformer will be my go-to product for the underbody of my LS400 from now on. Thanks for this tip!
Heck yeah man! Best of luck with it. Have some fun
you are the artist and Land Cruiser is the canvas. Masterpiece! lol
Hahaha I’ll take that. Thanks man!
I love the attention to detail in all your camera work, and the music choices. I love your videos so much! It would be super sick to see some off-roading/camping content as well ;)
Thank you friend! I’ll see what I can come up with 🙂
My favorite thing about this channel is his camera work. Makes me want to find some projects to do so I can actually put my gimbal and the rest of my gear to use.
Can't tell you how much I love your videos like these 👌
I appreciate you watching them friend!🥤
Your videos are so chill to watch. Nice job on the LX470.
Thank you man! Glad you like em🤝
Amazing attention to detail as always, great job buddy.🤛👍👌
Thank you Nick! You’re the man
Bro, that’s amazing!! Great work with stunning results!!
Thank you so much bro!
He talks!!! Thanks for the excellent content as always. Love it all!
Love the results! Looks fantastic

I love it!!! you're doing the maintenance I want to do on my car a week before I do it
Heck yeah man! Best of luck with it all 👍🫣
Absolutely incredible music!!! 👍🏽👌🏽
Thank you friend!🤝👍
As an owner of a Toyota that had a frame rust in half, I endorse this message! Your frame looks really good honestly...this thing is a beast.
So glad you are back Chromie :)
Thanks brotha! Gonna try my best for some consistency 😩
Not only have you helped me be a better detailer dawg…but Ima learning to take better shots and edit from your vids. Brother keep doing what you love to do!🔥
That’s the next compliment man. Hope all is well with you!🖤🤝
👍 Nice ! The yellow B is coming along too !!
Thanks man! That should be pretty soon 😳
So good!Love your work!
Thank you Josh! Much love
That blurry, streaky looking editing should be called “uh-oh, that last shot just hit me” 😂. Great work, as usual!
Hahaha I like that. Thanks for watching man!
Great Video and great job 👏🏻 ! I will follow your lead and do my Gx 470
This your Truck? Cause you definitely took the time and care and attention to detail for this truck.
Yes yes! Tried to do it the best I can to see how long I can make this thing last :)
Finally you're back! I have been looking forward to the new video the last month :)
Apologies for the delay! Got you though 🥺
@@ChromaticGarage None needed! I hope you have been doing well :)
masterful work!
Thank you friend!
Another one down. My guy you do it all?! Van Gogh with the brush! Keep it going brotha.
Hahaha trying my best bro! I’d love to be able to dabble in a little bit of everything 🤝
Amazing work! Beautiful LandCruiser.
Thanks buddy!
Insane. Im proud of you man
Thank you Merlin, you the man 🖤
You did an absolutely fantastic job; though, Im not surprised. That's the way you roll.👍
I try my best man! Always trying to learn. Thank you 🖤
Always the best!! ✌️✌️
very top work keep it up, and post videos more often 👍🇵🇹
I’ll do my best bro! Thank you!
Perfect timing. Needed something to watch while I pull apart an e34
Haha heck yeah. Get to it bro!
That looks great! I’ve been thinking about doing this on my 2022 truck. Rust bothers me especially on new vehicles. I deal with salt and snow and grim from the road here in Colorado, so I know exactly what you’re going through!
Heck yeah! Might be easiest to just do it right away as the truck is new. Much less work haha. Thanks for watching🤝
Looks tons better! A lot of work but should be worth it in the long run
Thanks Craig! I think it should be good for awhile. Gonna try and keep it as clean as I can 🤝
Nice work!!!
Thank you bro!
you should try dry ice blasting in a video🤙
I will Forsure! It won’t be for rust removal though haha
looks great man. next time id reccomend using the por15 rust dissolved spray for the spots that u cant hit with a brush. I used the stuff on my 93 f150's frame that's been rusting in Ontario salt since new and it turned all the rust into bare steel with minimal prep work. Id also recommending a wax/grease remover prior to painting next time to make sure that nothings gonna get in the way of your paint bonding with your undercarriage. really impressed with how well it turned out.
Snow falls outside My detailing fixation Satiated, here Temperature dropped 30 degrees this week, false spring is over. Glad you’re back!
Please don’t judge the haiku, I’m not creative.
Hahaha I appreciate all the poetry. Thanks brother!
Great video as always
Thank you bro! Much love!
This will definitely top 8 more years . Look study and solid, this vid inspired me to revive my Explorer Eddie Bauer, been looking for Lexus or a Toyota price is too high
I hope so man! That would be a dream. Yeah people are taxing for this stuff now. It’s very unfortunate the cars go through those cycles. It’s all just 20 year old junk
I never want these videos to end
Haha I got you bro!
glad to see you using protection for your face and airways while using those wire brush wheels.
Yeah man! Can’t mess around with that rust dust 🙏
Here in FL we can drive on the beaches in some locations. A lot of the more well-off 4x4 guys powder coat as much of the undercarriage as they can to help prevent rust from the salt water.
Looks better than factory! Excellent!
If you say so! I am pretty happy with it haha
Definitely the best aesthetic look and long term protection. Wondering if you will also hit the inside of the frame with an oil protectant? I’ve also been scouring the forums since recently picking up an 07 gx which has seen very little salt in SE Pennsylvania…but being from Buffalo I know the potential for harm…oil spray may help protect the unseen parts of the frame (especially interior horizontal surfaces where you simply can’t get a brush).
I agree man! So I filled the inside of the frame with fluid film and did a light coat on all other parts. I plan to rinse it pretty frequently as there’s only about a month left of winter here
I’m surprised your Moonswatch hasn’t snapped in half with the type of work you do. Love the channel!
Haha it’s about to be totalled. But that’s okay, that’s what it was for. Thanks man!
Really nice
Awesome and labour intensive job it was! You could try to source some Bilt Hamber Atom-Mac rust inhibitor, it should be available to you in Canada, you can give a light mist for the undercarriage from a pump sprayer after every wash or so, especially during the winter, 5% dilution is sufficient, and it’s not an extremely pricey product (definitely cheaper than a full underbody restoration). 😁 I used it on my Mitsubishi Shogun Sport 4 (Pajero/Montero Sport), I really like that product, always use it on brakes. Jennychem also has a product called Under Chassis Shine, which is a blend of rust inhibitors and silicones, but I’m not sure that it’s available for you over there. 😊
Just a tip, get some steel wire wheel attachments for when you are removing more stubborn material like the undercoating 👍🏼 the brass wheels are better when trying to be less aggressive. Came out great!
That is a very good tip indeed! Thank you man. I’ll remember that for the next one. Not that I have seen steel wheels here, but I’ll find em ahah
The results are awesome, man. Super satisfying. I just hope you cleaned out the channels on those cans before slapping the lids back on. If you haven’t already you’ll figure out soon enough that they’re now permanently sealed. 😂 Had to cut the lid off my first tin after neglecting to do so. I now always cut a small piece of plastic drop sheet and place it between the lid and tin before sealing it up for easy removal next time.
Hahaha man I left the main can of por15 too long and tried chipping it out with no luck. So I’m sure it’s completely locked in now. Gives me hope for the truck though 😭
What a fantastic result! Was so happy when I got the notification that you posted a new video! Are you going to do something like this on one of the bmw’s aswel? Cheers!
Thanks man! 100% I’m just trying to figure out exactly what to do to the BMW. Because they’re textured underneath. Research is happening haha. Much love
I have to do this on my 03 100 series. Man I wish I had a lift like you :)
It’s a lot but worth the result man! If you can find four friends you have a lift! Truck isn’t that heavy
Paint all the bolts with the calipers silver paint also the break pipes , it will look amazing
Haha that’s a great idea! But too late now
That poor drill motor! Haha definitely use an angle grinder or die grinder with wire attachments next time for any huge jobs especially those wheel arches. Love the channel and content. Currently doing the same to my e36.
Looks good! I hope you put something on afterwards to prevent future rust from forming because paint alone won’t stop rust also don’t forget about the inner cavity’s of the frame
Substrate properly prepped, it is neither required or needed to top coat POR15. The only exception for top coating would be for areas that are continually exposed to UV. But yes, the inner cavities could benefit from Fluid Film or something similar.
It will but yes there’s film inside the frame and a really light coating on the exterior
Давно не было видео, уже заждались)
New one coming up on Saturday man 🙂
What do you think about dry ice blasting? Seems like it could have been a good option for a job like this.
Great video as always. Just wondering if you considered having the underside restored by Honey Seal in Oakville, ON. Speed Academy had their Tundra done by them, and the results were unbelievable.
Thanks bro! I have been following those guys for years and genuinely believe they are creating the best and safest undercarriage results. I mention them everytime someone mentions undercarriage protection. However doing it myself I make money, having them do it I spend money and don’t get a video out of it. But I do believe if the channel grows we could do some sort of collaboration in the future 🙏
Nice job man ! Very detailed and clean video. Is it better to brush on then spray while rust proofing ?
🙌🙌👍👍👏👏✔️✔️ another great video!!!
Thank you brotha!🧸🖤
Doing gods work
Trying my best Parker!🧸
I'm curious how many hours this took you. I'm planning on doing the same exact thing to my '07 GX. Very nice job!
Thank you for the video been wanting to find a way to fully restore my navigator undercarriage to a better than oem finish. Do you think a scissor lift would work adequately?
Heck yeah man, best of luck with it! Scissor lift should be just fine. Little more to work around but nothing impossible
Pretty nice job ! how much would something like this cost?
Any result you achieve will be better than looking at rust.
Haha I couldn’t agree more man. I love brown, just not under a car
Bro words can’t describe…
come over to the Midwest and check some of our frames... better bring some metal and a welder😆 with that paint.
Haha its just as bad here. This was just a considerably nice truck, thank god
Probably lasts another 20 years dude. Ive seen por15 alone without a wirewheel job hold up a long time. Nice job dude!
Haha yeah I like to undersell things to myself. Por15 is kinda the goat
Looks super great man. Wonder if dry ice blasting will also take care of those rust?
I think it would Forsure! But kinda expensive to just end up painting over the finish
Agreed.
Supergreat as always. A couple of wonders, do you have lots of salt in Canada? Me who live in sweden, same weather i think as you guys has lots of salt on the road. Lots of cars that came from italy rust abnoxious because of their lack of rustprotection.
Thank you bro! It’s different province to province but most of them use plenty of salt and calcium phosphate. It’s literally the worst haha
@@ChromaticGarage yeah, nothing is safe when salt is attack it. My dads old Lancia totaly rusted apart in 2 years here in sweden. Toyota/Lexus seems do a better job on rustproof for sure.
How is it holding up? I am tempted to buy a clean 570 but it has this much or more rust.
Salt Gone rinse and dry then a Fluid Film x2 a year or an equivalent product will work well.
Yessir! Absolutely drenched in fluid film now
@@ChromaticGarage Excellent, keep that beauty on the road for another decade
🔥🔥🔥
My man!🤝
I want to rust protect my 2019 Tacoma. I see that you used POR 15. I was thinking of using Fluid Film. What is your opinion on both products and the reasons you chose to go with POR 15?
How's holding up? Thanks!
Now spray wool wax under the entire thing and inside the frame rails. Will prevent any future rust.
I didn't use wool wax but a similar product
What was the spray you used?
Sandblasting it or is it too invasive?
You should use dry ice for the rust & see how it holds up 🥹
I think it would Forsure remove some of it but prepping it for paint is easier this way I believe 🙂
How much does a service like this cost
what wheels are those?
How much it would cost as a job? My 2006 Lx470 was worse... I did something but not at that pro level. It looks better now..
Just go on ,like in the army
Great job mike
Thank you Mike!
How long did this process take you?
Hi Mate, what's the color code of those rims? please
I’m not sure of an actual code. They’re the F5 from SCS wheels, in bronze
how many hours went into this ? very nice :) pisses me off that we dont get POR15 in germany anymore 😮💨
ouh i found out that its availible again, even with their own DE homepage 😻😻
It was probably about 60 hours total! I’m glad you can get it! It’s great stuff
What do you charge to do this? 2000 Lexus lx470
The rubber material in the rear wheel wells is factory sound deadening and rust prevention. I would have left it. You will notice it’s absence.
Hahaha I meeaaaaan if you say so 😭
How long did this take you?
long time no see
Way too long 😩
Dry ice would work so much better in this application
Nooooooooo😭😭😭😭
@@ChromaticGarage can always do another video episode, take 2.0 😂
New Chromatic ? Where ya been ?
My bad bro! Took a month and a bit off to make an actual game plan going forward 🙂🤝
Having used anti-rust paint before, I would have gone with something other than that "rust reformer". Anti-rust paints like POR15 are intended to be applied DIRECTLY to rust and bear metal, not another coating like rust reformer. If you look at POR15's products, you will see that they have a three part system consisting of a degreaser, acid based rust neutralizer/metal etch, and the paint itself. That acid is what should be used before you paint. You spray it on wet, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, wash it off with water, and then once the surface dry, you paint.
