From Rust To This? Restoring The Undercarriage On A Lexus LX470 Landcruiser

DIY frame restoration on my Lexus LX470 Landcruiser, in video format? Yes. In this video I do the best job I can do to breath some new life into the undercarriage of my Landcruiser. Rust is a very serious thing in Canada, I wanted to get to somewhat of a fresh start before it got too bad. I understand this isn't a foolproof method, but this should at least buy me a little more time. I removed most of the loose rust with a wire wheel on a drill, hit all major rust with a reformer product, and followed it up by applying POR15. Which for those that done know is a pretty popular paint over rust product with quite a lot of very good proof of result. I am really happy with how this turned out and to get working on other Landcruiser projects. Much love.

  • Do I get bumpers/winch/air lockers for this thing or do I leave it stock body? Opinions below kings🙂

    • Def stock body, some lights maybe behind the front lower grill, ditch the factory rear electric lockers and get front and rear ARB air lockers. Should be enough for "camping". Love the wheels and tire combo set up btw!

  • looks great man. next time id reccomend using the por15 rust dissolved spray for the spots that u cant hit with a brush. I used the stuff on my 93 f150's frame that's been rusting in Ontario salt since new and it turned all the rust into bare steel with minimal prep work. Id also recommending a wax/grease remover prior to painting next time to make sure that nothings gonna get in the way of your paint bonding with your undercarriage. really impressed with how well it turned out.

  • Definitely the best aesthetic look and long term protection. Wondering if you will also hit the inside of the frame with an oil protectant? I’ve also been scouring the forums since recently picking up an 07 gx which has seen very little salt in SE Pennsylvania…but being from Buffalo I know the potential for harm…oil spray may help protect the unseen parts of the frame (especially interior horizontal surfaces where you simply can’t get a brush).

    @torref9230@torref9230 Жыл бұрын
    • I agree man! So I filled the inside of the frame with fluid film and did a light coat on all other parts. I plan to rinse it pretty frequently as there’s only about a month left of winter here

  • Awesome and labour intensive job it was! You could try to source some Bilt Hamber Atom-Mac rust inhibitor, it should be available to you in Canada, you can give a light mist for the undercarriage from a pump sprayer after every wash or so, especially during the winter, 5% dilution is sufficient, and it’s not an extremely pricey product (definitely cheaper than a full underbody restoration). 😁 I used it on my Mitsubishi Shogun Sport 4 (Pajero/Montero Sport), I really like that product, always use it on brakes. Jennychem also has a product called Under Chassis Shine, which is a blend of rust inhibitors and silicones, but I’m not sure that it’s available for you over there. 😊

  • The results are awesome, man. Super satisfying. I just hope you cleaned out the channels on those cans before slapping the lids back on. If you haven’t already you’ll figure out soon enough that they’re now permanently sealed. 😂 Had to cut the lid off my first tin after neglecting to do so. I now always cut a small piece of plastic drop sheet and place it between the lid and tin before sealing it up for easy removal next time.

  • Having used anti-rust paint before, I would have gone with something other than that "rust reformer". Anti-rust paints like POR15 are intended to be applied DIRECTLY to rust and bear metal, not another coating like rust reformer. If you look at POR15's products, you will see that they have a three part system consisting of a degreaser, acid based rust neutralizer/metal etch, and the paint itself. That acid is what should be used before you paint. You spray it on wet, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, wash it off with water, and then once the surface dry, you paint.
