  • Being 51, this broadcast quality is making me feel rather nostalgic, like staying up until the AM to tape Tyson mash it up in Vegas in the 80s.

  • How is it my first time watching these two? "Listen" needS to become a weekly to biweekly thing. The chemistry is tremendous. Two of the best in their field, both their MMA careers as athletes, and ref, respectively (and mutually, since Goddard is a former fighter), and as all around MMA personalities/analysts. More of this.

  • Best Full Reptile video I've ever seen. Unique insight from Marc Goddard who is an absolutely top-level professional, big thanks to him for agreeing to joining on this episode. I think this conversation shows the UFC in the best light. I was surprised to see how cerebral of a man Marc is.. the level of nuance he puts into his work. I also appreciate that Dan Hardy didn't focus on controversial fights/fight outcomes and instead questioned and defined the fundamentals of judging fights as a referee.

  • I love the discussion from 20:00 about the coaching during a foul time out. I never thought about it the way that Marc explained it and it makes complete sense to not have a fighter receive information relevant to an opponent while the opponent is in no position to receive the same in return.

  • I appreciate and applaud 👏 this great show of respect between opposing views on a subject (downed kneed opponent discussion). It's a great example that you don't have to argue or use hateful speech when there is a disagreement. Also my respects to each for being honest when they do find middle grounds and when they still have polarizing views. We gain knowledge and wisdom by listening to others point of view even when we disagree.

    • Sure, but it’s far cleaner and safer to simply take the “intention” out of it completely… Nuance and interpretation are the kryptonite to safety and simplicity. Dan’s right on this one for me!

  • On the knee discussion I honestly think the correct ground is inbetween In a intentional or unintentional scenario where the fighter can continue. A point should be deducted no matter the circumstance. In the scenario where a fight can no continue. In the case of a pure malicious knee a disqualification should be given In a case where it cannot have been intentional I.e. knee was thrown when the fighter could not have ascertained the opponent was downed by the time the knee landed. Where the opponent began to drop to a downed position after the knee was thrown. A clear example of unfortunate circumstances but the fight can no longer continue. In the case of a 1st round instance a No Contest should be issued, as we are not able to determine a result with enough fight time. In a round where we can go to the score cards they should have a point automatically deducted. Where they are winning it could become a draw or even loss, if they are losing well its a bigger loss (for the person that used the knee) That is the fairest way where all knees are punished but there is a level of different scenarios. I just feel that in all cases a point should be deducted. If the fight cannot continue the ref should disqualify, unless a certain scenario where a NC can be declared or in a circumstance where score care point deduction is made. In no circumstance is a knee not receiving either response.

  • Love these podcasts, learn a lot, also interesting to hear from a refs' perspective. Gustafsson fought Blachowicz, he had problem with Jan on the feat but ended up winning the fights by going for the takedown. Remember people critiquing Gustafsson's striking after that fight, Jan has given a lot of good strikers' problem over the years.

  • They both make interesting points. Marc's point is sometimes a fighter may not know the position of their opponent, but I think Dan is correct in saying, if you don't know whether your opponent is downed, you shouldn't throw the strike.

  • I think Dan's thinking balls and strikes. It doesn't matter if the pitcher intended to throw the third ball. Regardless, the batter walks. And if that costs the game, it costs the game. I think that's how Dan sees it. And Mark sees MMA as fundamentally unlike a sport like baseball. There's no clean batter's box, etc.

  • 1:33:00 Hey Dan, a good analogy for kneeing downed opponents argument is the new ruling of high tackles in rugby. If a defender makes a tackle aiming for the ball or chest area and defender's shoulder slides up and makes contact with the head, that defender will be sin binned or sent off regardless of intent. I agree with you, you should be penalised if you knee a downed opponent whether it was intentional or accidental.

    • Imagine if Askren has touched the floor with the tip of his finger 0.1 seconds before Jorge landed the flying knee. Would that be fair to punish Masvidal and give him the loss? Personally I think a no contest would be the fair result. Really interesting discussion though!

  • i think the issue you didn't mention is that if you automatically DQ someone if their opponent can't continue after an illegal knee, then they're incentivized to say they can't continue even if they're fine especially if they were losing prior. and if you wanna take away the referee discretion or grey area, then you just have to take their word for it even if they're clearly lying.

    @benglista666@benglista666 Жыл бұрын
  • The problem with deciding if fighter is disqualified or not based on whether fight can continue or not is that the person who got fouled will almost always pretend to be not to be able to continue, you can't prove without a shadow of a doubt if they are acting or make them continue. The only logical thing is to let the ref make that decision so that there will always be doubt of the outcome in the person who threw the strike, or the person it landed on, so that they are more likely to be honest competitors. Unless its changed that you cant win by DQ
