  • My Japanese mother owned her own restaurant. I lost her 13 years ago. She took all of her recipes with her when a brain aneurysm took her from us in a blink. Her food was how she expressed love. She grew up in war torn Japan; a poor and starving child. She'd tell me about her hunger pains and watching her emaciated mother give up her portions so she could have just a little bit more. Feeding people and having them leave her full and happy was her act of kindness. God, I miss her.
