Crazy Bike Design: Front Wheel Drive and Rear Wheel Steering! Watch me Build and Test it Out!
Get ready to witness the creation of a bike like no other! I recently got my hands on the sleek and easy-to-use Fiido X Folding Electric Bike with Torque Sensor,
but while riding it, my mind couldn't help but wander. What if there was a bike with front wheel drive and rear wheel steering? I couldn't shake this idea,
and it ultimately led me to create this one-of-a-kind bicycle.
Join me in this exciting journey as I build and test out this crazy bike with a front drive wheel and rear wheel steering. The process was filled with challenges and surprises,
and the end result was nothing short of crazy. But I'm thrilled to share this experience with you all.
Do you think you have what it takes to keep your balance on this bike?
Leave your comments and share this video with your friends to find out!
Don't miss out on this thrilling ride.

  • Several things. Rear wheel steering is always harder to control. You need to slow down the steering to reduce the steering input. Possibly even limit the amount the rear wheel can turn. Another issue is weight balance. Ideally, you want more weight on the driven wheel. I think the longer wheelbase helps you out here. I wouldn't go shorter. It's certainly very challenging trying new concepts in the cycling world! I built my own front wheel drive, front steer bike that works well. But I went through several prototypes first!

    • I was thinking the same thing he definitely needs to take weight off of the rear and change the steering ratio . For one as soon as he set in the bike the suspension bottomed out the you could clearly see the rear steer tire flailing about from the tinyest amount of input

    • It's just a general issue with real wheel steering, needs time to get used to it as it escapes from under you, goes wider in turn.

  • The bottom of the forks are behind the steering stem. I think if the bottom of the forks are in front of the steering stem it will be easier to steer. Make make the rear steering arm longer to slow down the steering. I'm sure you are on top of this already!! Cool video!

    @FatHulkRideEbike@FatHulkRideEbike Жыл бұрын
    • I think it will make it worse because the wheel will want to rotate to a stable position (bottom of forks behind the steering stem) like in a shopping cart, IMO the issue is that single-track vehicles use countersteering to turn, and in this situation when the steering wheel is in the back that effect makes it impossible to control the bike, maybe if he mounts this fork perpendicularly to the road, it might be easier to control but I think it won't be as stable and easy to ride as a conventional bike :)

    • Basically the angle of the rear fork needs reversing, so that the wheel contact point trails the steering axis. Then it will be self-stable, and normal counter steering should work.

  • Hi. By having the tyre/road contact point in front of the steering axis you have removed the self castoring action of the steering, and of course this makes it very tricky. I believe if you angle the steering axis the other way (i.e. forward) I reckon it will work, and it will have the added benefit of 'castoring' again. Also, thinking about when riding a conventional bike, when you begin to lose balance to the left, your C of M (centre of mass) is moving to the left of a line between the two tyre/road contact points. In order to correct this imbalance, you move the contact point of the front wheel to the left so that your C of M is brought back into alignment with the two tyre/road contact points. And vice versa. I am therefore wondering if perhaps your steering should move (the 'new' steering wheel) the opposite way to how it is now (in the video). Just my thoughts, but in any case, I'm sure you will get it sorted out. Regards Mark in the UK

  • There are bikes utilizing these mechanisms already, but it's interesting to see them put together like this. I think it could work. Bullitt from Larry vs. Harry uses the steering mechanism to transfer to the front wheel (it's my daily driver) and it feels amazing. Black Iron Horse 3 wheel cargo bikes use the rear wheel steering in a similar fashion also... But a 3 wheel bike is MUCH harder to tip over. On another note: I'd be curious if you'd consider putting Fat tires (4 inch wide) on a Bullitt cargo bike...? I have been playing with this thought for a while but I'm nowhere near as good with welding aluminium (especially if it comes to sturdiness of a cargo bike).

  • Add a steering damper to stiffen up the steering. The other thing working against you is balance. If you shift your position even a little the bike reacts a lot. You steer bikes by leaning to one side or the other and don't even need the handlebars other than to hold onto them for the vast majority of the time. Make the steering really stiff. I think that will help quite a bit

  • Great bike idea, I think if you set the back steering fork straight up and down that will get rid of the easy rider effect. Then also your back wheel reacts to quickly. If you bring in your steering joint more to the center next to the center you won't have that flapping around of the back wheel. That way if your handle bars moves a little back and forth from peddling the back wheel won't react as quickly to it. Also maybe put a limitor on the amount the back wheel can turn left and right. Like a fork truck with the wheels in the back it does not need much to turn as you drive. But it is always easier said then done but I have build a lot of bikes and customized motorcycles also for fun as a hobbie because of working in an aerospace engineering r&d lab fabrication machining and welding job. Always felt like a kid in a candy store. The more you build stuff the more you learn, and then your old and have to slowly give up things you love doing because of other circumstances. But keep it up, love watching your video's. You have a great talent. And open that garage door when your painting and welding those fumes will kill your brain. Put a suction fan in the garage wall to suck the fumes out. I was born in Arnhem the Netherlands and moved to California when I was 6. So from a former Dutchman, je doet geweldig mooi werk 👍. Plus you have a fun attitude making your films.

  • It seems to me that, stability-wise this is the same as riding a fixed gear bicycle backwards. There are people who can do this of course but it takes practice to get the hang of it and it isn't stable. In learning to do a trackstand I found that correcting for balance in the backwards direction is only possible for small corrections. For large corrections it is not recoverable; instability sets in. However, rear wheel steering is possible and stable for tricycles (see black iron horse tricycles and others), where balance stability is not an issue.
