Episode 1 of 9, Carbon Fiber Construction
/INSIDE Koenigsegg looks behind the scenes at Koenigsegg Automotive, and explores how innovation at the highest echelon of sports car manufacturers will affect the broader automotive world. Company founder and principal, Christian Von Koenigsegg, hosts this series, which was produced at Koenigsegg headquarters in Angelholm, Sweden.
In the first episode, Christian Von Koenigsegg reveals the secrets behind building automotive components from carbon fiber, the strong, lightweight material that's crucial to modern high-performance cars.
This man really knows every single component of his car, and it's function, and also he literally created some new ones never seen on the market... What a legend 😎👏👏👏👏
and it all started with a business degree and his moms shed, its insane
Some say he is a mad car genius and sheds his own hair to reduce unsprung weight, others say he is as aerodynamic as his cars are. all we know is he's called Christian von Koenigsegg!
Haha
Good one
and he rules!
LOL
His hair wouldn´t count as unsprung weight when it´s in the car!
I used to scoff at the price of these cars but you really are paying for the technology and ridiculous hand made manufacturing process, really cool how much love they put into these!
+95TurboSol yeah, it's almost funny when one thinks of how useless and cheap manual labour is today but these cars couldn't exist without it
+95TurboSol you really are paying for the technologies. Its why I would prefer that cheap fiber glass shell some regular old parts maybe a tuned out engine from local shop done in of those private garage by car replica's sculpture specialist who can perhaps to close match of replica. Oh did I say for only like maybe 1% of the real cost.
You aren't just paying for the cost of the parts to make the car plus labor to assemble it, plus profit It takes years of development to design the car, it takes government testing to make it legal Imagine how much money it takes to have a team of engineers working for a couple years and flying them around the world for testing. Koenigsegg needs to get that money back.. And if they only make a few cars a year that means each car has to recoup a larger % of the expense of development
O no u r a scoffer
😂😂
I love the fact that he's talking about the newest and most modern ways of creating parts out of carbon fiber and in the background there is this totally oldschool looking radio. Just perfect. :)
It goes to show the cars are really handmade.
I also noticed that... :-)
So much carbon fibre that their knifes they use to cut the carbon fibre is, carbon fibre.
*Fiber
There is a Japanese guy who makes a knife out of carbon fiber

This has been my favorite car company for years. This car, is not only brilliant, the engineering, manufacturing process, the passion, is just absolutely amazing. Ferrari and Lambo, along with Pagani (which isn't really in the same class) are brilliant designers, fabricators and engineering companies, but Koenigsegg is just not only a remarkable company, but their cars are absolutely wonderful.. wonderful doesn't describe them.. more like Amazing, or Astounding. As an engineer, business owner and carbon fiber parts manufacturer, I can not only appreciate the amount of work that goes into one of these cars, this video just simply leaves my jaw dropped at the attention to detail and incredible engineering work that went into this car. Koenigsegg is my favorite car.. hopefully one of these days before I'm either dead, or too old to enjoy it, I can buy one. I work my ass off, keeping myself, my family and my employees fed and in homes, that's my primary concern. My goal, is to one day, ride in my own Koenigsegg. My absolute dream car. I started another company, working on patents and designs, and my goal is to make the company thrive and take the profits from it and hopefully buy one of these some day soon. Until then, I can simply just dream.
Poppa Bear What I do not understand - how they make any money on these cars - I mean their production is VERY limited, production cost must be high as well - hell a company like VW is losing a lot of money on making their Bugatti Veyrons... (but the can pay it from profits of selling thousands of Golfs)
Lukas N. Yeah Lukas, I was thinking the same exact thing. I do carbon fiber manufacturing in small scale, and know how much time, cost and energy goes into the carbon fiber molding. The Bugati Veyron is highly expensive and I heard that VW was losing millions making each car. This company is either pinching pennies where they can, making their own molds, or has their costs down where they can. I built an original 1969 Z28 camaro, and even with the available parts, paying a shop to do some of the work, replacing everything with factory original steel and much cheaper parts, it still cost me about 20x what the car originally cost. Doing this in the modern era, with high labor costs, high material costs and out of carbon fiber... the owner of this company must have his act together, or, he's being funded outside as well. I'd still love to have this car more than just about anything else on the planet.. except maybe the new, 1-off, 200 million dollar lunar landing rover.:P It wouldn't be fast, but damn would it get looks. lol.
Poppa Bear can you give me your contact for short discussion about carbon fiber molding?
bayar agvaan yes, send me a friend req or add to contact and send me a private message. It'll pop up.. I'm logged into Google all the time on phone or pc.
Lukas N. A Koenigsegg One:1 kost 22,5 million swedish krons (approximately 2,8 million US dollar)
Wow... just wow, I love how they explain every detail.. These hyper cars... its amazing, they are at the same time both Art, and a technological achievement of man, I just love it.. If I could do 1 thing in the world, It would be to have a tour of the manufacturing of a Koenigsegg
Never thought I would see a pipe, and think it's simply superbly beautiful!
Crazy indeed.. And think that 99.9% of us can't make a single bolt, what a genious this man is
Very interesting. I work in the composites industry in a round about way as we make ceramic mandrels for composite parts manufacturing. My knowledge is minimal as to the actual process of making the CF part so I came here to try and learn more about it and this was a great help. Thank you.
Did you watch the video all the way to the end?
Yes
No Name you technically have a name it’s no name, Nice to meet you no name
It is awesome to see the owner and the founder of such a company to come down to explain such basic things as making a part of a tube, to explain their procedure. He really didn't sound like a person that has come up with such amazing cars. Thanks Mister! You raised the reputation of your company in my eyes by a lot. If i ever was to buy a sportcar, it would be a koenigsegg :)
This is by far the best video on carbon fiber and vacuum bagging that I found on youtube. This is what we need, proper practical applications. Not, how it was first developed by Edison and is now made by heating PolyAcrylonitrile(Yeah, I know those are important too, don't come at me with that). But, this is the best explanation of carbon fiber by showing how it's done.
I bet that radio at the back there is also made from carbon fiber.
Kevin Yeoh m
in such a factory they should use quality hi-fi product. That thing spoils the image.
🤣
The fact that their first car was made some 10+ years ago and how amazing the cars are is just stunning. I mean such a short history and they already are at the top.
Christian, I have been following you for years! You are such a special person in so many ways... Wow.
What a great contribution this man has made to future vehicle builders! Thank you sir. Fantastic work.
Now I can build a car
PLEASE DO MORE OF THESE!!! This was amazingly spectacular!!! Thank you for uploading!! -Kyle
How can you not respect this man? Wow. The love of the drive ❤
A true commitment to excellence. I appreciate the thinking that goes into these cars, every part designed to be the best ,in both quality and function.
holy shit carbon fiber utility knife ? 0:56
+Berkay Çağlı I saw that too. looks like they don't skip a beat or cut any corners... except in the fabric.
+Arthur Sideris and stereos...see that 90's boom box in the background?
Nope, carbon fiber without epoxy is weak, almost same like your 1$ poor's man t-shirt xd
+Arek R. He's talking about the knife handle.
Oh, right, thats cool handle, I didnt noticed :D
look at all the love that go's in to making this work of art
Incredible learning experience. I thought I understood what they can do with the material, having had CF wheels on a road bike, etc. It is absolutely amazing that they can make some of the internal engine parts with CF. One would think that the heat or pressure would destroy the material, but it seems as through this 'black art' can overcome all of those issues. Bravo to the company and engineers that do this stuff. Keep pushing the limits!
The introductory montage to the videos in this series is stunning. There are some skilled producers behind these videos.
It's beautiful.I just bought a carbon fiber ring. So beautiful. I could just imagine a car made of carbon fiber.
I'm taking a properties of materials class and I'm becoming a bit obsessed with composites.
sign me up Alex!
Alex Edge sign me up as well I've been wanting to do composites for a while now but no in to the industry. right now I'm doing rubber molding for screen media but it's not nearly as fun or rewarding as composites.
Kudos to the entire staff and contributors at Drive. From inception to date, production quality, content and presentation has been fantastic and it seems to improving, getting better and better. Now, I'm just waiting for the next installment of CHoC.
wonderful video, thank you for sharing your valuable information with us.
his head is actually brighter than my future -.-
He is a VERY smart man as is the team that supports him and works there
Nizz L Imagine that head with carbon...
Funny as 👍👍👍👍
What head are you talking about?
Lol
Love Christian... so an awesome guy with an incredible car.
A brilliant star in the motor vehicle universe... thank you for devoting your efforts for the betterment of enthusiasts everywhere!
Somehow I don't see many manufacturers explaining their processes so closely. Much more interesting to watch than showing a little glimpse then moving to shoot finished products in show room. Thanks Koenigsegg.

Koenigsegg is my favourite supercar brand
Its a hypercar not a supercar
who cares about your fav?
I've been a composite and layup tech for 5 years and this would be my dream job!!! I'd give anything to work there. I take a lot of pride in what I do and this would totally take it to a new level for me. I love cars and I love composites! The best part is I already know what I'm looking at. I'd be Koenigsegg's employee of the month for as long as they employed me lol I'd never retire and I would die a happy woman!!!!! I would seriously love to make this a reality!
Hi, was wondering you still doing layup?
Bruce Truong sure am
Where are you living at now, I'm in Southern CA.
Bruce Truong Ontario, Canada I actually threw in a resume at Koenigsegg just because why the hell not? lol
You have any pictures of your Carbon Fiber works? Would love to see ut, thanks. My email is baclieustud@gmail.com
Well explained and detailed, very interesting to see the process.
2:20 Making some of the most revolutionary, shock-and-awe cars in the world, his workers still carry a old timer boombox. God i love these guy. Koenigsegg is unlike any other.
that intro song with the car is amazing. I need to find out the name of the intro song

I love every Koenigsegg video. Especially when CvK is the one hosting them.
Excellent video, intro is like a briefing before some kind of secret mission! Very well done.
In my dreams!
I like they still have that old radio tape player from the 90's......
I need more! That was a video about a tube and I was blown away. That was a great video and I want to know how the rest of the car was made. MOAR!

There are a lot of companies that specialize in carbon fiber manufacturing. I am wondering if there is a benefit of not outsourcing the process to a larger facility? I can figure that the production time would be much shorter with the benefit of getting products made to the lowest bidder.
I think it comes down to pride... they are proud to do everything in house under the name/brand and I can respect/appreciate that
+Branden Bunny yeah I work with carbon fiber manufacturing company that does a lot of aerostructures for Lockheed Martin, Sikorsky and Boeing. literally aerospace grade stuff. there is no shame to outsourcing the work to another company that has been doing this type of work for 30+ years because most companies do it. But what do I know, I am just a manufacturing engineer.
Do you think Koenigsegg customers would be happy that their $2 million + car was outsourced.
+Tristan Thilen do you think anyone cares that the plane you take is made by hundreds of manufacturers? it doesn't degrade the quality of the product. Those bolts, battery, and even carbon fiber material that koenigsegg uses are probably outsourced anyways. there is no such thing as 100% in house manufacturing for a consumer product.
Obviously they don't care, because it's an airplane, they are trying to reduce costs and produce a good product quickly. Koenigsegg is not that type of company, they produce less than 20 cars a year. You may be a manufacturing engineer, but clearly you don't understand this concept.
Amazing commitment to excellence and has not slowed down since!
7:22 for example look at the internals of the rocker cover or sump. It is rough compared to the outside. It may not matter so much for this particular part but for air tubes and such it could improve the air flow.
Music is too loud.
ophello Nah, i never noticed anything wrong. You should turn your volume down.
Then you can't hear the talking. Good audio production is about balance. If someone is talking, you need to turn the levels on the music track down.
ophello I was just listening thru my laptop speakers and could hear everything fine. Maybe different computers audio have different settings. XD
Jamie Stirzaker No. If the talking is just as loud as the music, it doesn't matter what speaker you use. It will still sound like shit.
thats why you have volume knob... LMAO

I built carbon fiber aircraft parts at Boeing for 20 years. Exact same process used here, except all of our parts were cured out in autoclaves. At one time we were approached by F1 about building the tubs for Formula 1 cars.
great video. with seemingly all good cars these days using carbon fiber, it is a term that gets thrown around quite a bit, so it's cool to see what it actually is and how it is made.
this video never gets old
