Mechanical Coin Bank Restoration
Restoration of a antique mechanical coin bank from around the period 1877-1920’s. It’s a French soldier who shoot your coins down into the old hollow tree trunk.
It is in really bad shape. The wood it is mounted on are rotten and full of mold and the pewter base are broken in many pieces. The trigger mechanics inside the figure are also broken so I needed to fix that.
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I disassembled the coin bank and sandblasted the base and the big old tree. Then I repaired the pewter base. The plate where the hunter stands. I had to glue the pieces together with solder before I could cast the missing pewter. I gave it a nice layer of metal primer and hand painted it two times.
I also disabled the hunter, but I had to use drill and screw extractor to get 5 of the screws out. I replaced these 5 screws with new ones. I gave him a nice sandblasting and a layer of metal primer and hand painted him two times as well. I fixed the trigger mechanism and replaced the old rotten tree plate with a new one in oak. I gave it some oil to give the wood a darker and older look. I also created a little brass plate which I mounted on the oak plate, it says “Awesome Coin Bank”.
The small parts, such as screws and trigger mechanism got cleaned up in a rust remover solution and after that I polished all the screws.
I did not erase his face in the sandblaster - I only did a very soft cleaning with water.
I really enjoyed this restoration. There are something very special in restoring these old antiques.

Let's like, before we watch!!!
Nice work with the cracks and missing metal.
I really hope you create more videos of you restoring other zombiefied versions of toy story characters.
What I really love about this video? Is the 🤫. No horrible annoying music. Just the night animals. So relaxing and allows you to concentrate on what’s happening. I love it.
thank you very much :)
Exactly! I also hate annoying, ugly background music. I love just the natural sounds and the machines. Who needs to add music?! There is enough noise without adding music!
Silence is golden.
Can we all appreciate how talented this man is and the fact that we can watch him master his art for free.
thank you so much :)
@@AwesomeRestorations you're very welcome. Keep the videos coming!
Loved it 🙂🙃but you got the brass crooked
@@garydawson5928 what brass was crooked?
thank you so much :)
thank you so much :)
The visuals, the editing, the content, the in depth attention to detail, the macro shots......everything is just a work of art.
thank you so much :)
Even the beer fridge is organized and a work of art!
He's very good 👍🏼✌🏼🤣 have you checked out Chips Channel? He does toy restos ✌🏼he's magnificent 😂🤣👍🏼👍🏼✌🏼✌🏼💙💙
I completely agree with the above statement. Watching your videos are deeply satisfying and sooo soothing. Keep up the fantastic work!!
Agree👍
thanks a lot for your comment
glad you like it, thanks :)
thanks for watching :)
The magic begins! 🥰
thanks :)
For sure it’s like Marty AKA mr. Wizard 🧙
thank you so much :)
Excellent job! I'm curious about the "ammo belt" which is not on the finished item. Was it not original? Or perhaps just too far gone? Thanks for your video!
It was designed to shoot a coin only. Someone previously had "modified it" for fun it would seem.
The belt was not originally a part of the coin bank the previous owner attached it for decoration but the coin bank actually doesn't work when the belt is attached 😊
@@AwesomeRestorations Thank you! I had a feeling...
@@AwesomeRestorations love this guy
I know this may not be your only job and you’re busy and these videos take a long time to make but man, I wish you released one every week. You’re the best at this
thanks a lot - I will try to release more often but once a week will be too much :)
I suffer from anxiety and depression, but I don't know why, but your videos just relax and calm me. Not only are you doing a wonderful job restoring things, but you're also helping people, in a way you probably may not know. So thank you.
Thanks a lot for your comment. I am really happy to hear that it helps you watch my videos :)
Hey i know the cure. Get a job and stop gaming.
@@maddinswelt3163 Don’t be mean. That was a nice comment. And it was nice of Martin to reply. The world needs more nice and less anger. Don’t attack someone being nice. Just because someone has anxiety doesn’t mean they don’t work. Most anxiety comes from work. Just please be nice. I bet you are in real life.
thank you so much for your comment :)
@@AwesomeRestorations good job 🚛
This man right here is a engineer, restorer, treasure hunter and an artist all in one. I would give up if i even tried once. 10M subs is definitely what this man deserves. Each video probably takes forever to get finished. Every end product of the restoration is great and will always be. I liked the part where the small parts were put into a deep-frying like container. Just like McDonalds
thanks so much for your kind words I really appreciate it. And yes it also reminds me of french fries 🍟
thank you so much and welcome to my channel 😊
What's worse than trying to remove a seized screw, with an easy-out? When the easy-out snaps in the screw. 03:04 This is one freaky video, Marty. 09:06 The owl hooting and the raven squawking is a laugh. It's nice to see a cooler full of liquid friends at hand. 12:47 Very nice restoration, Marty. The oak plinth with the brass name plate is very classy.
thanks so much for your comment I really appreciate it :)
@@AwesomeRestorations I need to binge-watch your channel. 👍
The owl blinks too!!!
Your care with the little sound effects and the volumes of the noises is pure gold! You're the best, Martin!
thank you so much for your kind words :)
Martin, that was a great restoration. I am so happy you preserved the hunters face. Also, you also are an amazing alchemist! Cheers!
Thank you very much👍 Cheers 🍻
How come creations like this are no longer being created. We are going backwards my friends. Thanks for moving us a little forward Martin. 💪😎❤️
Thanks for watching and for your kind words I really appreciate it 👍🏻 :)
Long live Awesome Restorations! Beautiful artistry from start to finish. I love the item you chose to restore. Did a quick google search. Seems to be a mechanical coin bank originally created by the J & E Stevens Company of Cromwell, CT (starting around 1877). They produced several variations.
thanks so much for your comment I really appreciate it :) they are really cool those old coin banks
Great subject matter! I love to see these old toys get a new life. All the attention to historic detail is preserved and you end up with one mighty fine looking piece of a kid's era plaything.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks a lot :)
thank you so much :)
I LOVE THE IMAGINATION OF THIS ARTIST, MAKING HIS TOYS AND FIGURES TAKING PART OF HIS ACTIVITIES, I LOVE IT!!!
thank you so much I really appreciate it 😊
I don't think people realize how much thought goes into making these videos so weird and creepy. It's the small details like the moving doll and the owl in the spray booth that take the creepiness to an artistic level 😅
There is a saying: "The devil is in the details." And thanks to these small details, you get a spectacular video!
As ALWAYS you did a beautiful restoration job on this piece. I LOVE the brass plate you added to the front of the wooden base !!!
thank you so much Gary for your kind words :)

As usual, a fantastic restoration. Oh, by the way, I’m sooo glad that the crickets and the Great Horned Owls are back in town. I wait with anticipation for each video that you give us, “ your loyal subscribers “. Thanks again for a great glimpse into your hobby. Much appreciated, thanks Martin. 😎
thanks so much for your comment I really appreciate it :)
To be honest I actually completely forgot all about the 3 coins. I will make a community post when I have cleaned them so you can see them 😊
@@AwesomeRestorations Yes please do. I am curious about the 3 coins. Maybe you could make a video to show us them being cleaned so we can see what they are.
I love these old cast iron coin banks. I used to get a catalog full of different banks, dogs jumping through hoops and golf players. So many types! Now I wish I had bought one or two!
they are really cool :)
I love watching a craftsman bring a treasure back to life, greetings from an airborne brother from over the pond.
thanks a lot Kevan :)
Your restorative abilities are AWESOME. There is nothing on this planet that is old and broken that doesn't have hope.
thanks so much for your kind words :)
Yesss finally! I always enjoy watching you restore
Glad to hear it!
Never thought I’d be watching the crypt keepers great grandson restoring things on KZhead! Wild world!
As a Vietnam veteran- you got your issues, I got mine. I love your craftsmanship, no doubt. But I also love hearing the owls 🦉 in your background. Kudos Dude.
thank you so much for your comment I am glad you like the video 😊
I love how you present each piece... Always a joy to watch you bringing life back each piece. great job!!
thank you so much David glad you liked it :)
When I need to unwind, I come and watch videos like this master piece. Now my only question is...The sound of the birds, owls, crickets is that added in , or is that what you hear when you are working? Cause if it is , its heavenly. You are true master of your work.
I saw the lovely phrase "This needs Sandblasting" on the screen and I hollered in celebration and woke my puppy up. Lol she now knows how excited I get for Sandblasting scenarios. Day quota fulfilled🥰😍
Thank you so much for watching 😉👍
I appreciate the time and effort you have put into all your restorations. I look forward to seeing more of them. 👍🏻😎
many thanks :)
"FELICIDADES".
thank you so much :)
As usual, another incredible restoration complete! But, a caveat. Please, if not for yourself, then for your fans, please wear a particulate mask when grinding pewter. It contains lead and antimony, both are toxic metals, and I certainly don't want you to be sick. Take care of your lungs, I didn't and pay the price every day. Thanks again for you wonderful videos brother. God bless. Rev. D.
The level of satisfaction watching this is off the charts. Beautiful restoration.
thank you so much
