  • I'm a dentist. You can brush your teeth with a manual or an electric toothbrush. It's all about your technique! Electric toothbrushes are great because they make brushing easier. They can also have cool features like a timer and a pressure sensor. That's why I recommend them. But remember, toothbrushes bristles can't fit between your teeth. That's why we say to use floss, to clean those tight spots. It's best to brush your teeth two times every day, but if you can only do it once, do it before bed. When you sleep, you don't want the germs in your mouth to eat your dinner leftovers all night. When you brush with toothpaste that has fluoride, only spit it out and don't rinse if you are a grown up. You want the fluoride to stay on your teeth to make them strong!

    • @@Lmb_kunhe mentioned a timer. My toothbrush has a pressure senser to watch me from pressing too hard, and goes off every 30 seconds to tell me to move on. It reminds me to check everywhere. However, as a once-a-dayer, I'm glad that before bed is better than the morning since that's what I do. Maybe this will push me to be a 2 times a day person though.

Your tooth brush can not reach in-between your teeth, and since your teeth are a three-dimensional object, plaque can build up and start forming cavities anywhere on the outside of your teeth.

I still have a healthy mouth but to combat other health issues I floss daily and brush 2 if not 3 times a day and Sometime I only do it once a day But still no issues. I've tried a ridiculous amount of brushes over the years and nothing comes close to a tangle teezer - I have longish, thick, processed hair so there are a lot of knots & tangles to deal with and other brushes just hurt or take too long and rip knots out rather than actually detangling them 🙃. (The only other brushes I do actually love and use are kent boar bristle brushes but they're more for smoothing and distributing the oils at my roots down to the lengths). I'd be super interested to see if there are any other brushes nowadays that compare bc I'm not gonna try another brand at this point unless I know I'm not wasting my money 😅

  • I am sure others have mentioned it here, but I figured echoing crucial information is never a bad thing. I will preface this all with the fact that I am not a Dentist or a trained professional related to teeth. I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with several amazing dentist that give me lots of insight and information: 1. When using an electric or sonic tooth brush you actually need to do a different holding and brushing method. I have never heard of this "hold it and let the spin move around the teeth". My dentists have told me that you are supposed to hold the brush at and angle towards the gum and hold it in place. Slowly moving it laterally (forward and back). You need to put the strength in to hold it in place to make sure it brushes everything properly. The other way to see it is that if you are moving it around, then the moving brush won't be able to properly scrub the surface. It won't be able to go deep enough. 2. Also another great thing about new electric tooth brushes is that they have a self timer of 2 min in them. So many of them shut off after 2 minutes which reminds you to keep brushing that whole duration. Some even have intermittent buzzing (at like 30 sec) as a heads up. 3. One of the nurses that cleaned up my teeth told me that if I were ever too busy to brush and floss, that I should always choose to floss. This comment is directed towards someone who is in their late 20s so this probably doesn't apply to everyone. But she emphasized that floss is one of the most important things to do. Its THE way to get rid of plaque. I think the first point is the most important. Sadly this might mean that your results are a little skewed. But it also highlights the fact that these tools are becoming common place, but many are not aware of the proper technique to use them so in the end they come out being used improperly and seen as less effective. (Definitely looking at Amy as she is violently brushing her teeth with the electric tooth brush). Just wanted to put this out there to share information to ensure the general public are more aware of these facts

  • I think the key point is if you use a manual you are likely to brush for less than 2 minutes whereas if you use an electric the built in timer encourages you to go for the full 2 minutes. This study by ensuring that everyone goes for the 2 minutes eliminated the actual advantage of the electric.

    • Hello there, I'm a dental student here to answer your question! You really don't need much toothpaste, and that's because toothpaste doesn't really do much to remove plaque. 80% or more of the plaque that is removed when you brush is from the mechanical action of the toothbrush. So, if you were to brush without toothpaste, it would be at least 80% as effective as brushing with toothpaste. The main benefit of toothpaste is the fluoride, and the other ingredients are much more about the psychology of making you feel clean. So, as long as you have enough toothpaste to put a thin layer over your teeth, you're all set! It doesn't take much.

Make sure that your bicep is touching the underside of your forearm (the part of your arm you can see when your hand is palm up. I don't know the actual word for that part of your arm). Now imagine that your arm is always like that, forever! As you shower or bath the parts of your arm that are exposed to the air, the water and soap are going to get clean! But how can you clean out the sweat and dirt and bacteria that are stuck in the crease of your arm? You would need something small to run down the tiny gap that can grab onto the dirt and lift it out. Voila! That's flossing! It's simply impossible to fit something big between those teeth, and if you don't then the bacteria will literally eat away at your teeth and leave you with cavities. By the way, MatPat- if you do an episode on toothpaste, DO NOT use charcoal toothpaste! Not even for science. It causes permanent damage after one use!

  • Related to brushing teeth, I once heard that it's better to brush before eating than after, the reason being that you're leaving your teeth with a level of protection, whereas brushing after can just grind leftover food particles into your teeth, making it worse in the long run. It'd be interesting to see a test on that if there's a follow-up to this theory. ...although maybe I'd rather NOT see that, since right now, that very nicely justifies my "brush once a day when I first wake up" routine, and I'm not sure I want to put that at risk.

  • Yeah, that something I notice too the soft brisle brushes arent as soft as they used to be, everytime I buy "soft" brushes they all feel too firm. I'd like to see more videos about sunscreen like spf lip gloss, hair spf, and dental hygiene like best flose/flossing method and best tongue brush/brushing method.

  • Amy - "it doesnt change how i brush my teeth" I think that's the issue 😅 you cant use any electric toothbrush like you would a manual. You never brush back and forth with them.

  • The charcoal toothbrush is the best for me. Anyway if you brush your teeth and you still feel your mouth is dirty, either you have a wrong brushing method or a wrong toothbrush.

    • The "charcoal" material is irrelevant, it's down to brush shape and technique.

    • Blessings to bamboo charcoal brushes. As an autistic person, I hated brushing my teeth with anything other than one of these. Everything else is too hard and overwhelmed my senses. Also, they’re the only thing that doesn’t bleed my gums.

    • @catherinebaldwin6580 Oh man I just git that one for a trip and honestly It is such a nice feeling. I'm autistic as well and kind of struggle but I never thought about why I struggle. Maybe it's the feeling. Thanks for the insight!!!

  • I always felt that my mouth cleanliness was best when I mixed using both a manual brush and a sonicare. Didn't matter which was used for the morning or evening brush, just that they both got used in the same day.
