    • I do agree with Brad’s points about the Royal Family, as I’ve studied the history of the Royals and Princess Margaret was in a similar situation following on from the Abdication crisis of 1936, although Princess Margaret’s situation happened after 1952 - the Royals position and divorce and Marriage seems even more bizarre when one goes further back into history, to the time of the Tudors & Henry VIII and his obsession with having a male heir (which Ann Boleyn’s failure to produce a male heir was the real reason for her execution) where Henry even set up the Church of England after the Pope refused to grant him a divorce from Catherine of Aragon for failing to produce a male heir, yet after his only male heir was a sickly boy who died at barely 18, he had to decide the line of succession - in the centuries since, after the death of Elizabeth I in 1601 (the last Tudor queen) James I of Scotland took the English Throne after his mother Mary Stuart Queen of Scots was executed - yet, in later centuries they banned Catholics from taking the throne in Protestant England and banned royal divorces since the 1700’s, especially before and after Queen Victoria took the throne in 1837 - 1901 and beyond which continued through 1936 with the Wallis Simpson Abdication affair

  • Hey so to clarify the argument, the movie simplified the book A LOT and took out a lot of parts that made Alex and henry’s relationship more complex and interesting, mainly how deep the control of the crown goes into Henry’s life. After his father died when he was young his mother went completely catatonic and hasn’t been seen by the world ever since, Bea his sister fell into drug addiction and Philip his older brother even as the stuck up he is is going to carry the throne and its responsibilities. Henry is in the middle of all of this dealing with the fact that he will never live the life that he wanted, an anonymous ordinary life with a man he loves. When he sees Alex at their first meeting in the Brazil olympics (not a climate conference, Im brazilian so Im salty about that change) he instantly falls for him, and is terrified of it because he can’t let him self fall because he will never be able to have that future. So he tells Shaan to “get me out of here.” Henry has been carrying this crush for a long time so when he kisses Alex for the first time he feels like he failed, he did the one thing he wasn’t suppose to do, fall in love. After that as they begin their friends with benefits thing Henry hopes that it will be just that, he can have a part of Alex live that joy but not burden Alex with the fact that they will never be able to be together. He NEVER expected Alex to fall in love with him, that’s the breaking point, Alex is presenting him with everything he ever wanted but he can’t have it. So he runs away. Alex loves politics, he isin’t as affected by the public eye because he wasn’t born into it, he didn’t have to spend his entire childhood and teens surrounded by cameras watching his every move. Henry sees it two ways, either he lives a miserable life with the crown where he is scrutinized till he dies, or he goes with Alex and is still scrutinized for a life in politics, he sees both as prisons. He’s not saying that it is a prison to Alex because Alex likes that life, but Henry doesn’t. Here’s a small part of the argument in the book: “Oh my God,” Alex groans. “So, what, was this all never going to be anything real to you?” And Henry snaps. “You really are a complete idiot if you believe that,” Henry hisses, the note balled in his fist. “When have I ever, since the first instant I touched you, pretended to be anything less than in love with you? Are you so fucking self-absorbed as to think this is about you and whether or not I love you, rather than the fact I’m an heir to the fucking throne? You at least have the option to not choose a public life eventually, but I will live and die in these palaces and in this family, so don’t you dare come to me and question if I love you when it’s the thing that could bloody well ruin everything.” Alex doesn’t speak, doesn’t move, doesn’t breathe, his feet rooted to the spot. Henry isn’t looking at him, but staring at a point on the mantel somewhere, tugging at his own hair in exasperation. “It was never supposed to be an issue,” he goes on, his voice hoarse. “I thought I could have some part of you, and just never say it, and you’d never have to know, and one day you’d get tired of me and leave, because I’m-” He stops short, and one shaking hand moves through the air in front of him in a helpless sort of gesture at everything about himself. “I never thought I’d be stood here faced with a choice I can’t make, because I never … I never imagined you would love me back.”

  • In the book we get more depth into henrys character, he is clincally depressed, he lost his favourite person in the world -the only one who understood him - at a very young age, his mother withdrew from her kids leaving him practically an orphan, Bea (sorry for the spoiler) turned to drugs , Philllip hated who Henry was and his grandmother was as homophobic and racist as they come, they forced this uptight personality on him. Henry hated to be a public figure - hence the trading one prison for another - That's why he is not as willing as to be disowned because that would mean he will loose everything he was trained and abused for, that's why he has big feelings, that's why he is "dramatic"

    @ines2476@ines24768 ай бұрын
    • Exactly! He doesn't see a way for them to just be, because he is a royal and Alex is in politics and wants to stay in politics, So no matter what, they'll still be scrutinized and that's what Henry doesn't want. He tried so hard to be the "Prince of England's Heart", and he is so scared of the hate he could get if his relationship with Alex goes public... It is very sad. He sees Alex with having "nothing to lose" because going public wouldn't affect him that much after his mother's campaign is done. That quote, "My life is the crown, and yours is Politics, and i will not trade one prison for another" says it all really.

Alex tells Henry that after the election he wants to go back to Texas with Henry and hold hands while walking in Austin. So Alex WANTS to go public. He’s even dreaming of it. While Henry, from the beginning, said he couldn’t. So after hearing that, it was not just “let’s continue what we are doing loving eachother”, it was “he wants something from me that I can’t give, because even if we go public and I am desowned, we’ll still be under pressure and stalked by the media since Alex wants to go into politics”

  • Henry was tired of the spotlight being on him and the pressure to be a figurehead. His dream was to be an anonymous person in the world, where his decisions didn’t effect so many people. He was saying he didn’t want to trade one prison (the spotlight of the royal family) for another (Alex’s dreams of being in politics) and said that it doesn’t cost Alex anything because his mom would be running for her second term, and after that there’s no pressure to uphold any illusion in front of the press to get another election. Henry was born and raised within the political spectrum and it’s pretty apparent that his future would have been that forever and every decision he’d ever made would have consequences, unlike Alex who technically didn’t have to worry about things like that after his mom’s election. **Obviously this is just the movie interpretation, the book gives Henry a lot of other motivations for why he acts like he does.

  • I don't how I have never found you before but I love you! I am a 67yo grandma, married for 45 years with children and grandchildren, that loves BL movies and series. I was hesitant about this movie at first but after watching for about 20 minutes and seeing the chemistry between the 2 I fell in love with them and the movie. The story was quite good and the acting was also very good. I loved the supporting cast, especially Alex's, they are so funny. When watching gay movies or series I prefer guys over girls and have watched quite a few in the past. My favorite genre is actually Thai BLs. The stories are so good and the acting is amazing. Yes, you must watch with captions, but the love scenes make parts of my flutter. These guys are so passionate and hot when bedroom scenes are shown. My favorites are actors named Zee Pruk and Nunew Chawarin from the series Cutie Pie and Mile Phakphum and Apo Nattawin from the series KinnPorsche. The two couples are truly amazing. I can't wait to watch more of your video reactions. As for loving who you want, I am 100% for that. My daughter and her ex had a daughter before marriage and began planning their wedding. After a year they had another daughter and we all knew that he only got married because he didn't want to come out to his grandmother who is very religious. But after 2 1.2 years oSo, life is strange, but love who you want!!

    • Ikr? Still I was surprised that in the UK and US this movie is apparently rated 18... On German Prime it's listed as 12, which I think is fair as they really toned down the swearing and there was like no nudity, only 3 shirtless scenes Of course the book may be more of a mature read, but this movie?

  • 35:29 well alex and henry's situation are a lot different. alex was born and raised in a supportive family and he never had to hide who he is in front of them, but for henry....the only support that he had was from his sister and his dad who passed away very early on in his life (his dad made his life a lot easier and he loved him that's why his death affected him sm) henry was constantly limited from both the king and philip and he also had a nonpresent mom (i'm trying not to spoil the book just make points from the movie lmao) he always quote "wanted to be an anonymous person in the world" because he had enough of all this bs. and from his pov alex's political lifestyle could not provide him that cuz he would still be in the spotlight (that's why he asked if he had any doubts about wanting to be a politician their first night cuz he sorta wanted to gain some hope that maybe he can be with him in the future) henry's character arc is generally really interesting and complicated ( as well as alex's ofc) and i think reading the book + the extra chapter from him pov can really help you understand it better

  • as for this: this is all about Henry's closet. Alex was never in the closet because he was clueless that he was really into guys. Alex is, in fact, Prince Charming rescuing Henry from his closet and allowing him to love which he didn't think possible. Henry was content to have a fling even though he was madly in love with Alex because he never thought that Alex would love him back. that's why the "drowning" scene is so important: it's the hopelessness of his closet.

  • 36:23 yeah you should have more sympathy ngl I honestly never saw Henry as being “melodramatic” in this scene. He’s grown up with the ideology that any desire he seeks is selfish if it’s not to do with the crown. Yes, having royalty is stupid, but that’s all he knows, his life is the monarchy and the spotlight. It’s been drilled into his brain by his family and their royal history that no one will ever except him as gay, and his love for Alex betrays everything his family expects of him. This is hardly my place to say, but it is well known how terrifying it can be for gay people to come out (it shouldn’t be but it is), but especially when they know their family will not accept them. Imagine that, but it’s his entire family, the monarchy, the tabloids, the country, perhaps even the world, that doesn’t accept him. Of course, this doesn’t happen, he gets more or less accepted for who he is, but he has been told since he was a child that he won’t be. Love you Brad but leave poor Henry alone
