    • Exactly but its also not 100% idealic. Theres still homophobia and struggles but it focuses more on overcoming that than just trauma and depressing shit. Theres definitely more mental health involved further into the novels but i wont spoil exactly what happens. Still, even with tackling harder subjects alice oseman manages to keep the overall message positive. Its my fav younger gen lgbt show (well, live action at least haha) rn and i just want something like this for wlw too. The way alice writes is so perfect.

    • @@lilywhetsell8106 yes i know!! I still think people shouldn't* be acting as if only the negative things are "realistic" there's love in the real world and they should be able to have standards for it, it is realistic to want a Nick Nelson or a charlie spring, it is realistic to say NO to people like Ben and his lack of affective responsibility. Just like in the "Hetero love world", it happens the same thing, almost anyone believes that love it's not entirely real but there's super beautiful love stories, novels, series, movies etc and I think we deserve this kind of love stories too, don't we? Only for kids to know that they can ask for more and they deserve more (obviously, Hetero love life is way more easy, I'm not comparing, I'm just saying it's nice to have this too, a healthy, romantic, nice love story even in the bad times they supported each other, and they still together with strong love)

  • What made this show stand out for me was the telling of a gay love story but through the lens of 14-15 year olds. We tend to forget being gay is not just an adult experience. And they told this love story in a beautifully ,relatable way

    @scottward7850@scottward78502 жыл бұрын
    • Absolutely, often media while improving in showing more LGBTQ+ people fall down the same route of confident adult who knows who they like and how to flirt. This is refreshing as it shows the relatable figuring out of feelings for teens, and it's so tastefully done and wholesome.

      @G1NZOU@G1NZOU2 жыл бұрын
    • Ironically, this seemed to me to be - yes about teens - but otherwise it's really mature. There is conflict and miscommunication but the characters mostly talk about it before reacting, very refreshing compared to a lot of the drama we've seen before.

  • This is the Gen Z coming of age, coming out story we all needed. I was raised within the queer community and was fortunate to never suffer from comp-het but so many people my age and those that came before us, did. Shows like this destigmatize and offer good representation. Everyone can find something relatable and I think this is truly such an amazing show that shows it is not only okay to be who you are, but that who you are should be celebrated. Everyone is worthy of love and joy and deserves to be seen so this show is definitely a step in the right direction.

    • @@romanv.8395 it does, it’s incredibly realistic in fact, the awkward moments because it’s your first relationship, the taking time to figure out your sexuality in a healthy way, it’s very realistic for gen Z as the generation grew up in a more accepting time period, they understand that what they feel is valid, the show is very open and lighthearted while also subtlety dealing with heavy subjects, such as bullying, being outed, internal homophobia, early signs of ED, this show is so important to people of the lgbtq+ community aswell as ally’s or people who are trying to understand what’s it’s like, I had very similar experiences to Nick Nelson and I liked that I could easily relate to a character and their struggles, don’t say its “not realistic” because maybe YOU don’t relate to it but literally thousands of people on Twitter tweet daily about how much they could relate to the show and its characters and how they were glad that we were actually getting healthy lgbtq+ representation in the media.

    • Never too late to comment! I was also late to the game in taking up Netflix's recommendation to watch Heartstopper. It has impacted me so hard, helped me process so much! 🤯 *You identify as disabled in your comment, so I wondered... Do you identify* with some of the dilemmas that the characters face in finding love (e.g., feeling that they're not worthy) in relation to your experience with disability? 😓 Also although most of us have focused on the show as an LGBTQ story 🌈 it's also about a boy who is dealing with serious trauma 💔 being stigmatized, bullied and in an emotionally abusive relationship, interconnected to living as a young gay man. So it's also about trauma and suffering from mental health and eating disorder (made explicit in the sequels), which I would definitely consider part of the disability community 🦾 when folks want to identify that way. I am 41, queer and chronically ill. 🤕😷🥴💘🦄🦩 I've experienced extreme homophobia (not so much in the sense of direct physical threat but) in a lack of access most of my life to my gender/sexual identity existing as something I knew about, coming from my community. ✝️🛐❤️‍🔥 I now identify as non-binary 💛🤍💜🖤 and pansexual 💙💖💛, and as a woman because that's been my lived experience. I experience disability and suffer from chronic pain with a lot of mental health effects. I have trauma from family violence, extreme pain, and the medical system. To give my own answer to the question I asked above: I found it so wrenching in Episode 8 when the boys define their relationship as "boyfriends" and Charlie says, "I never thought this would happen to me." 🫂 And Nick says he actually feels the same. 😢🥲 There is so much about living with queerness, mental illness, disability (and you can imagine all that together 🥺) that makes it feel impossible that anyone would love us with the really expansive love that we need 🌊💙💙💙, or even really value us so deeply when we're so defined in the world as defective, in need of repair or putting "straight." 🔧 If you made it this far into my long ass comment 🙊😹, *I would love to hear anyone chime in on your disability experience in relation to the film?* ❓❓❓ Or any other trauma overlap, i.e. how do you feel about this series in relation to your experiences of racism, or gendered violence? 🙏🤟❤️‍🩹 I feel like in actual life we see so much overlap in trauma, i.e. so many disabled+queer voices on Twitter! 🏘️🏘️🏘️🏘️👨🏿‍💻🧑🏼‍💻👩🏻‍💻👻💩🥵🥶🤢😎🤓🤧🤒🤕😷🤥🧘🧑‍🦯🧑‍🦼🧑‍🦽🏋🏼‍♂️🧜🧚🧠🫀🫁🦻🦿🦾🦾🦾 But we don't see ourselves represented and we don't see examples of these issues being dealt with in a clear and connected way by characters in media. 🧐🔍🎬

      @danakchampion@danakchampion Жыл бұрын
    • @@danakchampion I definitely identify with the trauma, because I have pretty severe CPTSD. I was very severely bullied and that did a number on my self-esteem. But an abusive relationship nearly destroyed me. That and my (aquired) disability made me feel like no one could really love me as I am. I found all of Heartstopper resonating, except the abject fear of being caught kissing by heteros & homophobes. And I really really wish someone would talk about Charlie's mum, because she is actually very abusive both verbally and emotionally, and is a major reason for Charlie's poor self image, as well as all of Tori's (read solitaire! Damn that mum is cold!). People tend to think abuse is only physical, but mental and emotional abuse is just as bad, and witholding affection and love is about the most damaging anyone can experience. As a child it's absolutely devastating.

I'm an elder millennial, went to high school from 98 to 2002 & I feel like I've been robbed of situations like Charlie & Nick went through because of how society was in the late 90s. • Honestly this is so good because it’s like- purely it’s a queer romance that doesn’t have massive amounts of tragedy- - when there’s conflicts in this show and in the webtoon, they’re resolved relatively quickly. They don’t let problem simmer on for longer than they need to for the sake of drama. Yeah they do throw some obstacles in the way but it’s something they always manage to get over- and that’s awesome-

  • I love these final scenes so much and have watched them repeatedly. I havent' read the books so don't know about future "I love you" scenes but this one was pretty much perfect. It doesn't matter that Nick didn't get chance to finish the sentence with words because his eyes said it all and it was clear that Charlie fully understood and felt it too. As a straight woman in my 40's I really didn't think I was the demographic for this program but I love it so much. It is possibly the most heartwarming and tender relationship I have ever seen portrayed. KIt Connor and Joe Locke are sensational and as a mental health nurse I think that everyone would benefit from watching this series for the warmth and humanity it shows. Just utterly fantastic !

  • I know sometimes, in American television, once a character speaks even once, they are considered actors and no longer considered background. This means that they have to be offered membership (which they still have to pay for) to SAG (the Screen Actors Guild). That then makes them union and entitled to union benefits and a higher rate of pay, in many cases. I've worked background before and we're not allowed to audibly say anything that can be construed as a line. It's all just quiet fake conversation. So, depending on the order in which they shot this show, that character may only speak in a handful of episodes because they may have only paid him a background rate for the episodes he didn't have lines in.

As a young bi woman, I totally understand the struggle of understanding that you also like the same gender, and how difficult it is coming to terms with it. Also usually bi people, just as any other queer people, are represented in awful stereotypes that are quite harmful. They really did an incredible job🥹.

  • 9:19 It's initially an unspoken detail, but the bravery of Charlie to walk into that room when he can hear them all talking about him speaks millions honestly. He's fully aware that walking in during their conversation will mean they know that he heard them, but he is so used to people talking about him (as he later does say) that he's sort of able to power through it. If I walked up to a room of people gossiping about me, I would NOT be able to just walk right into that room and make myself the immediate center of attention, I would just leave.
