  • Honestly, I expected a LOT worse when Freddie told us it cost $6k. The fact it drives, has no major rust issues and as a 10 foot car looks cosmetically ok, that's a decent bargain. Obviously that may change once you get into the woods, and the big risk is the cheap manual conversion, but so far, it looks an ok buy.

      @SasquatchChief@SasquatchChief Жыл бұрын
    • @@SasquatchChief No need to take it out. As the previous owner (not the one who stanced it, the one who corrected that awful decision) I can tell you it has had a full rebuild with a new oil pump, rod bearings, a head fresh out of the machine shop, rebuilt and upgraded vanos components across the board, and many other things I can't think of currently. The oil leak was the last thing I was chasing down before I was forced to sell the car, though I believe it's coming from the high pressure line that feeds into the top of the vanos unit. The clutch and flywheel are brand new as well, but the set I chose was a single mass flywheel which explains some of the vibration. The center support bearing was definitely on it's way out though, so that's most likely what he's talking about in the video. The cheap manual conversion is because doing it properly is $1500+, and in college I simply couldn't afford that yet. I did have plans to eventually switch out this shifter because even I wasn't aware of how bad it was when I bought it.

    • @@alexandermckay8594 He didn't show this in the video but the cluster was swapped. So the actual mileage (which is accurate) is 165k miles. But the odometer shows 110k. Also, it's a rebuilt title that leaks oil, needs all new suspension (the control arms are bent all over because New York roads don't treat cars well), and also needs a LOT of cosmetic work. In general, it was hard to find someone actually willing to buy the car in it's state because everyone wants the "mint condition only driven on the highway" blah blah blah, and even with everything I had fixed, it was hard to sell the car.

Yes they are more expensive to maintain than a something like a Honda, but if you do your research, buy the right car, and do preventative maintenance, they really aren't too bad. I spent more money maintaining my MK6 GTI (even with a warranty intact for some of my ownership) than i have on the m3.

    • Hey! As the previous owner, I thought I'd clear up a few things here. First off, the engine is a fresh rebuild with new rod bearings, oil pump, a freshly reworked head, rebuilt and upgraded vanos (exhaust hub had the tab snapped off when I pulled the motor apart) so the motor itself is solid. The oil leak I believe is from the vanos high pressure line, it was something I had been tracking down for a long time but wasn't ever able to fix. I did the manual swap with the RTD shifter due to cost reasons, and wasn't aware of how difficult it would make it to find 1st and 2nd, otherwise I wouldn't have done it. The clutch and flywheel are brand new, but it's a single mass setup which explains part of the vibration. The center support bearing on the driveshaft is most likely bad, and this was also something I didn't get around to. The rear subframe was reinforced, so that's not a concern anymore either. There's many more things that I fixed/worked on over the years, so this car is actually in a really good state outside of the oil leak, suspension, and driveshaft. Also the oil temperature does work, I reprogrammed the range so it made more sense compared to how it is factory.

    • No Freddy always finishes up his projects before he starts another. Seriously I think this will get done but only because Jack will do most of the work just like the Ferrari Jack did such a good job on and the Mercedes that needed so much body work and all Freddy really did was put a new steering wheel in and a few other pieces.

  • My brother loved BMW. Fell in love when he was in Germany. Here is the one thing I can say about a BMW, I loved the driving experience. The first BMW I drove was my cousin’s car and it was AMAZING! Then my brother came down and he was driving this BMW that was literally in pieces, however I drove it and it handled just like my cousin’s new one. I mean I get the appeal. However I agree about the unreliability. I’ve heard too many stories from wannabe yuppies.

E30’s, e36’s, e46’s, and e92 non m m50/m52/m54 are very reliable and with proper work and maintenance more reliable then most cars My e46’s ‘05 330ci coupe zhp 6 speed 114k ‘02 330ci auto vert :( 162k

      @spicysnowman8886@spicysnowman8886 Жыл бұрын
  • To be fair, I got an '00 328i manual with the BBS sport package for $2k wrecked when I turned 21 (super low speed, mostly cosmetic damage), rebuilt it myself in about a month with $2k in parts, a lot of which were upgrades, and it was reliable to drive but it randomly fried the steering wheel slip ring (no more wheel buttons) and had a saggy headliner and I learned how to replace window regulators with that car. I put about 50k on the ODO then sold it for $4500. Guy was so stoked for it too even with the issues. I showed the guy who bought it all of my work as well as receipts for everything indicating they were genuine parts, so he knew it was rebuilt despite having a clean title (airbags never deployed and both parties elected to not report the collision). He said it was the cleanest one he had seen at that price point. Perfect subframe, upgrades pre-done, and the entire cooling system was already rebuilt. I even wrote up a whole post on Bimmerforums way back documenting my progress, parts and price lists. $6k for one of these really is a steal...you can hardly get a ZHP for that price anymore. I just personally prefer working on Japanese over German. Fun fact: the MAF sensor from a Hyundai XG300 ended up being a direct fit for the 99-00 E46. So I used a genuine Hyundai part for that because it was cheaper to source and a closer dealership to bike to.

  • My friend in college had a White M3 with black interior. I guess it was the previous generation M3, early or mid 90's. It was a beautiful car, fun to drive and he didn't have any mechanical issues with it. It did cost a fortune to replace the front bumper when a raccoon ran across the road in front of him (a bit too slowly) and smashed up the bumper. Of course, it didn't do the racoon any good either....

Also that particular shifter looks like it was installed incorrectly. Shouldn't be impossible to correct. Also, your gut instinct on the test drive is correct. Likely a mis installed or bad drive axle and possibly bad rear wheel axle bearings.

  • Makes me so sad every time I see an e46. I had bought a silver mint e46 (not an m3, I'm not Jay Leno) 330ci coupe last year with insanely low miles and every single option possible. I owned that car for 2 weeks before the garbage plastic impeller water pump went out. As I was on the shoulder of the interstate waiting on a tow truck, a random Kia SUV plows into me at 80 mph. I was still rocking the temp tag. LUCKILY, he seemed to swerve at the last second and only took the drivers side corner, but I kept visioning if I just so happened to be stepping out at that moment. Everyone stay humble and expect the worst; it may save your life.
