In this woodturning video I will recycle or repurpose some resin shavings from previous projects. Mixed green and red shavings to provide good contrast and casted in clear epoxy resin. Used a nice piece of burl for the base and once it was out of the resin pressure pot it was time to shape the blank using my woodturning lathe. For this application I used my negative rake carbide bits and finished with resin top coat for high gloss premium finish.

Good to see someone recycling those shavings back into art for once!
Lots of youtubers have done it with mixed results.
Yup. I always wonder where all those shavings go 😢
Nick Zammeti and Ben's Worx have recycled resin shavings.
The kind of wasteful approach to wood is one of the things about wood turning that has weirded me out. Most craftsmen who work with wood pride themselves on creating little waste. But just grinding things that could clearly be cut out whole during the design phase down to sawdust seems to be the way most people in this craft go. So this is refreshing to me, too.
And the circle will not be broken
Its a never ending paradox, the more shavings he uses, the more he makes, he will never run out
Further evolution of the idea could be a real winner!
Absolutely STUNNING!!! ♻️ Recycling ♻️ at its finest!!! 👍🏾👍🏾 That beautiful vase looks so natural, like you dug it up from the ground! 👏🏾👏🏾 Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! Cheers!
Great project and using a byproduct from other pieces. Wonder result and craftsmanship 👍👏🙏

This is beautiful!
przepiękna, szczęśliwego Nowego Roku
Thank you so much 😀
Super work❤❤❤❤❤
Very cool! Though it got me to thinking; what if you made a lamp the same way, but used blacklight reactive dye in the resin? I'm curious to know if that would turn out good 🤔
Lovely ❤
I often wondered what happened to the shaved resin
Beautiful work. Really great to see the recycling too. Well done 👏👏 Here’s the pedant in me though, it’s great turning, just not woodturning👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I’ve never worked with resin and I’m curious about the tape. Could you just put one piece over, pulling it super taught, do your pour and then quickly add the rest of the tape? Also, a beautiful outcome! And, that is one Percheron of a Forstner bit 😱✅ Thanks!
Beautiful, Happy New Year to you
Happy new year!
Looks lovely! And finally a good use of the shavings! How many voids appeared? There was pretty much area for the bubbles to stick at
Thank you 🙂 Yes there were some this is why i went with a resin top coat finish. Also many bubbles within the shavings. Would have been better to put in the vaccine pot to suck the air out them into the pressure pot to further help with the bubbles
Nice project David, but are you going to be recycling the recycled shavings? 😅 All the best for 2024, Mike
Yeah this will never stop them 😅
@@DavidsWoodturning Haha, I get the eco comments a lot as well
What manufacturer of scraper are you using at 5:12. Looks like negative rake but a huge cutter. Do you have a link please. Nice piece.
Check out Simon Hope Woodturning
There's not a lot to add to the comments below, the finished vase looked really great. But how did your steady fix to the lathe? And did you make it yourself?😊
It is very beautifully made from shavings, but it is clear that the edges of the vase are not finished and not processed.
Brilliant! I'm curious - is turning epoxy harder on your tools than turning wood?
Not really, carbide bits are super durable
So the answer is: yes you can. HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎈
Yeahhh :) happy new year!
So you turned something out of resin without any wood? Or how did you separate the shavings?
The resin had some wood still but not very noticeable. I collected this shavings from the early stage of turning when mainly resin on the outside
You ended up creating more shavings than you recycled!
I use hot glue to hold my blanks
But what is it? A vase?
Yes it is. Display only though
Зачем так изголяться?

@@DavidsWoodturning, oh, I am understand!
Created more shavings than was recycled?!
They will be recycled again then again.. 😅
A total waste of product! Has to be better way!
