Woodturning - Yew Won't Be Expecting This!

I love working with Yew but didn't know how I wanted this piece to look before I started to get into the turn. Yew always has such amazing character and I wanted to try something a little different, which is why I added the 4 "legs" in the middle of the piece. I hope they become some point a talking point and the focus of this piece, I especially like the differences in finish between the two areas, and how natural they look compared to the top and bottom sections.
The piece has been sanded to 1000 grit and finished with Danish oil, sanding sealer, and wood wax.

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.

  • Fascinating to watch take shape. Not related, except the wood, but my favorite yew creation was from an artist that carved a female sheep. Sign said it was a "yew ewe for you". I enjoy your channel.

    • @@HarrySmithWoodturning I did like the twisted legs and it was cool to see how you achieved the look. As to more or less, I leave that to your creativity. Obviously you can see possibilities in the wood that I can't imagine. It's probably why I find stone statues intriguing...how did the creator see that in a block of stone.

    • I reckon a Goblet, sometimes people turn them with rings from the material around the stem so you can't get them off unless you great them, around the stem, the most I've seen is 3 rings, and I saw one that had 3 spiral stems like this each individual yet all twisting the same, I hope that helped Cheers 🍻 Matt Maryborough Queensland Australia 🦜 🦘 🤠 🇦🇺

  • Beautiful! I do not understand the need for more "grinding" after the middle section was done, I would have thought it would have been risky to lathe more off after those thin strands were completed!

  • Nice effort, but you made two mistakes!! First you chose the wrong wood full of cracks and second mistake the branches in the middle you made are dissimilar to each other, he wanted more attention to the sanding and sandpaper that you would pass through!!! But keep loving what you do and you will improve!!! Hello from Stuttgart!!!!
