I'm impressed. GCU too quick and athletic for the Gaels. Really strong team that is tough to guard on offense, and plays really good individual and team defense with tons of rim protection. They are gonna be a tough out for anyone. Great game!

GCU employee here. Grand Canyon University was founded in 1949 in Prescott, Arizona (which is about 2 hrs from the GC), 2 years later GCU moved to Phoenix. This is also why our mascot is the antelope (look up the pronghorn in Northern Arizona). Also, Arizona is known as the Grand Canyon State so really any entity within Arizona has a claim to use Grand Canyon in its name.
Everything is far away from the grand canyon... The school needs to be in a large town . When I visited the Grand canyon it was more than an hour drive to the nearest grocery store which was barely bigger than a Dollar general...

The upsets this year are unreal
It really shows just how weak the NBA draft is this year. There's no really GOOD set of players out there than can shift the brackets.
Grand Canyon is a legit top 10 team this year. This just proves how biased the analytics are towards the power 5 teams. This team ended up as a 12 seed because some good ole boy Texas refs decided their kids were going to win. Look up the box scores if you think I’m blowing smoke.
It’s true. If it woulda been a nationally televised game and not just WAC fans watching there would have been a controversy. Against Tarleton GCU was ROLLING in the first half and then in the second the refs stepped in and absolutely took over the game.

Saint Mary's really need to start recruiting more athletic players. Last couple minutes was just throwing up desperation 3s, that's not their game at all. Giving up 75 points is a disaster for their style of play
I felt the same way. I can see why they would be a good regular season team in a weak conference, but they don’t play a style of basketball that’s going to take you very far in March.

It's unusual to see an all white team (St. Mary's). All of GCU players were black. Both colleges are private, Catholic/Christian universities.

Late in the game, when it was close, the free throw disparity was 28 - 10. Kudos for GCU making their free throws … but, dang, when you get 3x as many foul shots, it’s certainly easier to pull off the upset.

When we were able to successfully contest shots in the paint, I started believing we could pull it off. We kept getting to the line, and SMC never found anything to counter it. Proud of the team as an old alum from the Division 2 days.

And they never would be. An "upset" is a lower seed beating a higher seed. They were a #5 seed playing a #12. GCU was the only team in the game that could pull an upset.

Grand Canyon was clearly the better team and yet St. Mary's was ranked. Somethings not right.
Upsets happen. There's nothing to complain about. I'm certainly not.
GCU only faced 1 top 25 team this year, which they did win, but still not enough to rank them. But as the announcers put it tonight, GCU was clearly the better team, so it didn't really feel like an upset.
