Douglas Murray gives his argument that there is too much immigration in Britain.
SUBSCRIBE for more speakers ► is.gd/OxfordUnion
Douglas Murray raises the point that the argument often used for immigration is that there are jobs that British people will not do, he says that this is racist. He quotes statistics from studies showing that the British people think that there is too much immigration happening in the UK. He concludes by saying that immigration isn't the problem but it's the speed of immigration that is.

    • It should be saying no to 99% of immigration. Legalizing only makes the massive influx of immigrants legal. It doesn't change the fact that natives are being replaced, even if it is legal. Something I'm always baffled with is when people are okay with being replaced demographically as long as it's legal. Same argument I hear from people who complain about being replaced by Hispanics demographically in the states, but on the same issue say they're okay with immigration, it just has to be legal. You're being replaced either way.

    • The problem is, and the WEF I think confirms this, the wealthy have never much cared who their neighbour was so long as they were of the right sort, and that is because they recognise an elite. To them there is no nation, merely a global playground, and this has been the case for thousands of years, just limited to how long it took to travel. The elites can use all the fossil fuels they wish, the masses cannot, the elites can eat what they please, the masses cannot, the elites can say and act however they please, the masses cannot, even reproductive rights (the US has a dark history of sterilising the poor, mostly white by the by, now the argument around absolute abortion "rights" and the encouragement for it to be "empowering" to be childless and such BS). No matter the form, no matter the time it will never change, which is why people can't just take it on their knees, and they certainly can't think "something else" will be the elixer, it never is, accountability is the closest thing we have.

    • As a Romanian too I agree. The reality of the situation is that mass immigration is no different from collonialism. Mass immigration represents an influx of people with different ideals and beliefs which threaten to undermine the ideals and beliefs of the natives. Add to this the fact that there is no concerted effort to naturalise these immigrants (break their desire to subvert our traditions and beliefs) makes it worse. The only end to mass immigration will be either mass deportation or massive and overreaching laws for the purpose of breaking down immigrat beliefs and replacing them with adequate native beliefs.

  • I moved to the UK from Canada for a career opportunity, my main motivation was because I wanted to travel the world a bit, but the close second was my falling in love with the British culture by watching British television and movies in Canada. I came here because I wanted to learn about the British, and integrate into their society and their culture. I love the history of this nation, I love learning about the great diversity of thought, dialects, and cultures within this nation. I find it absolutely shocking to find so many young people, British natives, or people who came here to be educated in the prestigious British universities, think that being proud to be British is racist. I meet them everywhere. I find it incredible that I have more love for this country than young British citizens. I recently had a taxi driver, a man from Pakistan, drive myself, and a British friend (who very much is ashamed to be British). This driver, absolutely ADORED this nation. He could not stop talking about how incredible life is here compared to back home, and the other countries in which he has lived. It makes me wonder what is being taught to children here, in Canada, and America, that we are being taught that our heritage is something to be ashamed of. My family fled Communism in the 80s to make a life for their children, and I could not be more grateful for the sacrifices they made in terms of career and leaving their homes, all for their children's future. When I travel around Europe, I find the locals extremely proud of their heritage. They talk about their culture proudly, and they share that culture with others. But if a person in England stands up proudly for their culture, they are perceived as racist. There is something rotten at the core of this. We must start teaching our children the COMPLEX history, both good and bad. Not just focus on the bad. Yes, bad things have been done by British people in history, and also incredible, wonderful things that have helped bring about the modern world we live in today. History is complex, because HUMANS are complex. We cannot simply paint it with a single stroke of the brush.

Do you think that you should be responsible of the crimes and debts of your entire family tree going back multiple generations? Do you believe your children should inherit your debts if you had some? If I move to Africa and a son is born to me on the continent, he shares nothing with Africans other than the fact he is on the continent. Secondly, I invest my future to this country as what Britain is. • Mich Elle Yea. It's gone too far. They don't want to get assimilated is the biggest problem, and they keep saying why do you not accept us. That is madness. This German guy said the following on some tv show. Germans made so many holidays for Muslims, but they keep asking for more and more. If you want to dress as you dressed before in your country, if you want to eat as you did before, stop forcing people and go back. If your culture is beneficial enough, people in the hosting country will adopt it and want to learn more and more even if you don't force them. It's natural selection. Humans intuitively know what's good or bad. This is how cultural integration happens. Majority of the population in the world is refusing Islam, because it's not good. It's violent. It's you immigrants who need to change if you decided to live in a foreign country.

Many of the natives in West Europe are dissapearing and France looks like another middle eastern country, same with the U.K. and the rest of them. Why do people get upset about the Native Americans land being taken and the population being replaced by foreigners, but no one gets upset about Native European lands being taken and the natives being replaced? The hypocracy is real. When people visit Europe, they expect to see the majority being the native people of Europe, not migrants. Why does Asia and Africa and Middle East get to preserve their culture and ethnicity but it's automatically racist when Europe wants to do it?

  • I'm an immigrant - I arrived to the UK from Iran when I was 7 years old and been living and working here ever since then. I completely understand where Mr Murray is coming from. Compared to the UK, US, and Canada, other nations are so much more stricter when it comes to the immigration system. The rate of immigration does matter and the reasons of individuals for wanting to seek asylum is not always a legitimate one. I also believe that EVERYONE that seeks a safe space to live is also an economic migrant. Although some do have legitimate reasons for moving, i.e. political persecution, almost every migrant is an economic migrant. However, looking at it from another lens, the British Empire was built from the process of colonization which is why it has a lot of foreign connections when we look at the history of the world. Because of this connection, it was inevitable for people from other nations moving to the UK and other Western nations. Look at me as a prime example. The British were in Iran for many decades while the Shah was the leader. It was almost inevitable for Iranians to seek a life in Britain when the regime changed.

With many people from outside, with very strong cultures of their cultural birth, there are too much differences, and it creates paralel cultures, that are not united in many ways.I do not think that that is good, for any of us. Spent 3 years at uni and then went on to work as a teacher in different establishments. Had to move to back to Greece because of health issues. Still, I would return each year to teach English in the summer. Every year I paid in full my insurance contributions and my taxes, which in the end have me settled status as a European citizen. Haven't returned since COVID though unfortunately.I never saw myself as an immigrant, and the Brits never made me feel like an immigrant, until the whole Brexit vote that is. • You did not decide to stay here & bring huge numbers of relatives. The problem is, there are certain immigrants who come here and expect us to change our laws and customs to suit. They don't respect us or our societal standards and that is unacceptable. People are sick to death of the current invasion.

  • I agree agree on many things he said. Mass immigration is bad for Britain. It is bad for the USA. It is bad for many countries as well. I am an immigrant. My family is an immigrant but we followed the process. I am against an influx of immigrants with no law and order. That creates instability and leads to violence. The whole point of my family leaving our native country is to avoid instability and violence. To have a better life not bring those with us and make the countries we see hope turn in to ashes. That’s not what I would want. But obviously there is room for improvement but that is a different topic. We need immigrants who are willing to acclimate to their new social cultural setting. For some reason many liberal states in the USA discourage this. In fact they encourage them to speak their native language and have interpreters. Yes we need interpreters but they need to learn English. It will make their lives so much easier. They can learn their new environment a lot faster and minimize being hoodwinked and fooled by those who want to take advantage.

  • "Badly managed" immigration is an obvious problem. You might note, they never flood Henley on Thames with immigrants or refugees. It is always the 'already poor and challenged areas.' THIS IS NO ACCIDENT.
