Author Douglas Murray reacts to a man chided for eating around people observing Ramadan.
In the clip shared by Based Paddy on X, a man pointed out the worker was “stuffing his face” while others observed Ramadan, causing the worker to put his lunch away.
“Everything that has grownup in the West on freedom of religion and freedom of thought is predicated on the idea that I can have my beliefs and you can have yours and we are part of the same society,” Mr Murray told Sky News host Rita Panahi.
“The moment you change that pact and say actually I have my beliefs and therefore you cannot have yours, everything changes.
“And then it becomes effectively an intimidation game or a numbers game and that is obviously what was going on in that clip.”

In Australia in every single offices there are muslim people who are fasting and their co-worker are enjoying their lunch and snacks and it doesn't create any problem to anyone. I’ve dealt with this so many times with Muslims, especially when it comes to food, particularly when it comes to pork. While you’re respectful to them and their ass-backwards religion, they show no qualms about being incredibly disrespectful to everybody else. More than once I’ve had experiences with Muslims about me eating pork, or about me being gay, one Muslim going so far as to call me the F word. Muslims are very, VERY disrespectful.

An acquaintance of mine was recently in Jordan for job reasons, right at the beginning of Ramadan. She as a Christian wasn't allowed to eat and drink during the day in public. She was allowed to eat, but only in the privacy of her hotel room. And now we have Muslims complaining in a Christan country that non Muslims are eating and drinking during the day during Ramadan.

That's ridiculous that they expected that from her. What about someone like me that has diabetes? If I have to eat, I have to eat and fast otherwise I can go into a coma and die. Worked in Saudi Arabia for almost a decade. There were no issues with us eating in the designated Lunch area during Ramadan because WE WEREN'T MUSLIMS.
I work in Algeria, same here.

They tried that when I was working. CEO said not to eat in front of muslims fasting. But we didn't have a canteen and our kitchen was very tiny. So we all gathered in the hallway (same floor as CEO) and ate our lunch. That ended it.

It's a term that we all need to understand. It means wicked, unclean, vile, affront to god, apostate. So think of it like this, could you ever morally do something wrong to the devil? Probably not because the devil is pure evil, so lying, cheating, stealing from, killing, all are fine because the devil is all bad. You can not wrong something that is completely wicked, vile and evil. That's how non-believers are seen. You can't be graped, murdered, stolen from, or any other transgression because everything you have and everything you are is fruit of the poisoned tree. You have no rights because of this, you are abjectly evil and someone up to and including killing you, as a non believer, could never be a crime, because it increases the justice in the world because one more wicked thing is gone. This is a mindset that I don't think most westerners understand, and it's certainly held by the most radical adherents, and some number more as you move toward the more moderate end of the spectrum. It's not pure hated, but it ends up looking like something akin to that, but it's not really hatred in the normal sense. It's something FAR deeper and much more insidious.

The hatred represented by that word is much, much more virulent and dangerous than most hatreds in a Western country, because it is literally sanctioned, encouraged and endorsed by their holy books - their whole 'civilisation'. The main religion and the accepted philosophies of the West go so far as to say "love your enemy" and encourage tolerance of the 'other'. And it's for those reasons our bureaucracy and politicians bring in those who have nothing but contempt for those same tenets and norms. Our leadership will need to be dragged kicking and screaming to the realisation that they're destroying the very thing that motivates them to tolerate the intolerant. We're watching our civility crumble because civility can only exist when there is a basic commonality of world-view. I worked in the supermarket during the 70's when employers looked aftrer their staff .. we had a staff canteen and dinner ladies would spend all morning cooking proper food and roast dinners for the workers ... pork belly was often on the menu ... oh! the horror of it! can you imagine the level of reparations necessary for that today!

I had this at school. I'm a teacher, the children were going out for lunch (Year 6). As they were leaving, I got my Tupperware box with my sandwich. A child told me I was being rude because some people are fasting! I just said, they are not in a Muslim country, the majority are not fasting. They will have to deal with seeing food. They are free to observe their religion as they see fit but that does not impact my freedom to get my sandwich out of my bag!!

I know of someone else in the UK who has been pressured into not eating lunch at this particular time out of "respect". If I’m on my lunch break, at a lunch table, eating my lunch-stfu. You dont want to eat, then don’t. No one is stuffing food down their throats. When on lent and sacrificing and or on fasting on Ash Wednesday or Good Friday, I have never heard a Catholic or Christian tell people to stop eating. If you’re making a sacrifice for g-d, then it should be done happily and willingly. Maybe the Muslims could learn how to be more happy to serve g-d when fasting on Ramadan like Christians do during lent.
