    • Agreed, one of the aspects of a movie, which makes it what it is, is the SFX, as an editor, sometimes I have to make weird stuff with sound to get a really cool effect which sometimes, goes unnoticed but without it, the video would lose quality.

  • This is such a cool and thorough explanation of the difference between sound editing and sound mixing. I think all members of the Academy must watch it before voting in these two categories again, as for most of them it's just a very nuanced, technical part of filmmaking that they are in the dark about. Great video and great film!

    • @@nikitalavrenov8048 And it's true many of them don't know what a good sound is. I read an Academy member's predictions a few years back, and he admitted that without shame. Luckily he abstained in these categories. But imagine a movie professional saying he doesn't know what a good-looking movie is ! It's so weird, because you can make millions with good sound and a few budget cameras (Blair Witch, Project X), but without sound you can't make a movie even if you have a RED camera with a $100000 lens.

  • I knew there's a lot of work put into sound in movies (well, now I know about sound editing and mixing but 15min ago I did not) but holy shit, I did not expect THAT. I learned so much from this clip. To think that there's so much thought put into such simple things like steps to emphasize some character's personality when sound wasn't even present there to begin with! I wonder if these guys can live their lives peacefully though - imagine you go out and you hear some really cool sound and your first thought is that you gotta record it cause it could be useful someday! XD Also, thank you Vanity Fair for all these break down videos. They're truly fascinating!

    • My wife is constantly annoyed that I get excited about sound everywhere I go and have to have a portable microphone/recorder with me everywhere. My daughter (who's 6) is starting to get into listening all the time and wants to record sounds too though so I have backup! Haha.
