Drive (2011) is a film that works on many levels simultaneously. The fast cars and the ultraviolence are expertly juxtaposed with the now-iconic synth-driven soundtrack. There are many aspects to admire in Nicolas Winding Refn’s ode to L.A. crime movies but in this Drive video essay, we wanted to look at something very specific. In the Drive opening scene, we get a tense and heart-stopping car chase. But it’s not just the editing or camerawork that is driving the suspense - it’s the sound design.
Throughout the Drive opening scene, layers of sound are added to the mix to help generate suspense. In any suspenseful scene, we need three things: consequences, uncertainty, and time. If any one of these elements is missing, the whole thing falls apart. Let’s look at how Nicolas Winding Refn used these layers of sound to fulfill these criteria.
Consequences - obviously, we know the consequences that await Driver and his criminal passengers if they are caught. The alarm blasting from the break-in, the police sirens in the distance, and the helicopter roaring overhead all remind us of the danger involved in this operation.
Uncertainty - will Driver be caught by the police? We see very little of the police but we know they’re there and we know they’re closing in. This information is delivered through Driver’s police scanner as we follow the progress of the search.
Time - time is running out from the moment Driver starts his analog stopwatch. The music sounds like a racing heartbeat with a metronome-like rhythm. And to top it off, Driver has timed everything to the conclusion of a basketball game, which he listens to on the radio.
The cinematography obviously plays its own role in the scene but the real hero here is the soundtrack. By isolating our perspective to inside the car, our vision is limited and we rely almost exclusively on what we hear. Drive is a showstopping showcase of the Nicolas Winding Refn directing style and Drive’s first scene is a masterclass in sound design and suspense.

Would you please do an analysis/ breakdown of Winding Refn's Bronson?
This was and is a bloody masterpiece. Action without all the BS, the random noises and cuts etc
100% agree
❤️😎❤️😀
Yep. We more like this.
So glad movies like Drive came along as a reaction to the 00's action movie style of shaky handheld shots and cuts measured in milliseconds. Even really good movies from that era are really hard for me to watch now because the editing just makes me nauseous!
Perfect direction 💯
The music, the editing, the cinematography, the direction, the production design, the performances it's just top-notch. This movie is a fucking masterpiece.
didn't really like the actual plot though.. still one of my favorite movies- especially because of the music
@@olik136 plot is very generic, it's literally the same as the baby driver but the execution of that plot is what makes this film a masterpiece.
The Guest movie with Dan Stevens borrowed some of the stylistic atmosphere
Perfect execution 🔥
Undoubtedly, one of the best opening scenes ever. And as always a great analysis by Studiobinder.
Well worth a breakdown!
Yes, the music, the visul, I was hooked right away.
One of my favorite movies. Drive and only God forgives were incredible
Cannot believe it's 10 year anniversary of drive! This is a movie I watch at least once a year
Yep. Soon people will laugh at the movie as they jump in their hover cars to glide to the mall.
Very rewatchable 👌
One of the few movies with just the amount of ingredients it needs. Action, Crime, Romance, Tension, Sadness... Everything is perfectly mixed in the simplest of ways. ❤️
Pure cinema!
Ah man, hearing Kavinsky kick in just hits in a different way. This soundtrack is gold.
Among the best!
Aaaaaaaaaaaaabsolutely!!!
Also notice the blue to show danger and yellow /orange when he is safe, it's amazing
Great use of color 💯
"But the REAL HERO is the soundtrack." I see what you did there :)
😉
What a coincidence! We are literally using Drive as an example of sound design in our film class!
With good reason ;)
YESSSSSSS. Please do more sound design videos.
We'll take suggestions!
@@StudioBinder Danny Elfman's score for the Raimi Spiderman Trilogy as well as anything by John Williams lol
I'm onboard for that!
narrator, you are a comforting wonder.
He is for all of us :)
The first time I saw Drive I couldn't believe any action movie could have such calm yet terrifying demeanor.
A different kind of action 🤯
One of the best films ever made.
FACTS
Lots to love about it!
Refn’s brilliance in incorporating sounds in general and music in particular is demonstrated in so many of his recent works: Drive/OGF/Neon Demon in films and the series Too Old to Die Young.
He's really nailed this area of filmmaking
I think Drive is one of the most Masterful examples of direction ever. The scene when he is in the apartment with Irene at the beginning of their relationship so perfectly handled. I'd love to see you guys do an "Art of the Scene" style breakdown on this involving how character directing and cinemaphotography combine into a masterpiece of a scene.
One of my favorite movies in high school. Really the one that got me into sound design and music production.
It's a great film to study those things!
This is absolute genius.... I’m a photog and want to shoot films soooo bad after watching these vids.
No better time to start than the present!
@@StudioBinder Big thanks for your vids.
Things I didn’t notice in this movie makes it all the more special. The sound design is crucial to the story telling. Drive (2011) is the definition of an auteur at his finest. Great analysis Studio Binder.
Glad you liked it!
@@StudioBinder thank u
Love the use of Kavinsky's Nightcall
It's Amazing how Nicolas Winding Refn build Suspense with Sound Design and Editing in the Opening scene of Drive (2011). This Opening Scene explain Brilliantly the Creativity of the Filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn is. Thank you StudioBinder. The Video is Great.
I just watched this film a week ago and now Studio Binder made a video about this masterpiece. Great one
What the hell same
We're here to better your movie-viewing experience 👍
@@StudioBinder Wow ! thanks for the reply. tbh Studio Binder actually helped a lot in making my team successfully produced our first feature film especially with the screenwriting software. The film had it's premiere back in August. But we had to postpone the theatrical showing as our country is now on a partial lockdown due to Covid. Thanks a lot Studio Binder and keep on producing great content for budding filmmakers like us.
This is why Drive is my favourite film
With good reason!
7:52 also the announcers excitement matches Drivers successful evasion of the squad car. just brilliant

film school? I watch Studio Binder.
Just watched it for a second time this weekend! The suspense and sound design was amazing in the violent scenes!!
Sound is the invisible game changer!
This film has always been on my watchlist but I have never got around to watching it. I definitely will now!
You'll love it!
This is undoubtedly one of the most brilliant channels I’ve come across
We're getting better with our viewers' help!
An absolutely brilliant short tutorial on creating sound for suspense! Thank you!!!
The best cinema consists of great camera shots and sound design, both of which should be 'seen and not heard' as they say. This was a great breakdown.
To get even deeper, the camera shots and sound design let's us feel what we should feel rather than just being told what to feel with dialogue
I loved this movie a lot! Ryan was subtle yet impactful. The opening scene is stunning. Listening to the mix here with headphones gave me chills
Definitely a modern masterpiece
Reaching classic status for sure
Drive has one of my favorite opening sequences ever. It has enough style but doesn't sacrifice any substance. It's very realistic but directed in a way that gives a lot of suspense and tension so it isn't a bore. There's nothing wrong w/ opening a movie up with a car chase sequence or a shootout but given the tone of Drive, I find this opening scene a masterpiece.
I love these breakdowns. To boot it gives me a newfound respect for this scene, this film and the effectiveness of sound design as well as the editing.
It does help you enjoy a great film to know what went into it :)
You guys should do more videos on Refn's stuff even other than drive...he is a very misunderstood director... a brilliant analysis as always by Studiobinder
Amazing presentation and breakdown of the Scene, congrats StudioBinder!
Thanks for watching!
Loved this breakdown! I absolutely love how films are made up of so many layers and creative choices in across many facets. I always had a love for film and now I'm an intern at a film company it's blown my mind even more! Love your content! Keep it up!

the editing is just amazing.
Happy 10th anniversary to this amazing work of art!
No better way to celebrate than a breakdown and re-watch 😉
10 years? Wow I did not think it was that long ago
My fav channel on KZhead, hands down.
I recommended this movie to so many people, I've watched it for God's how many times, and I had full soundtrack playlist. Through this movie I learn that sound and soundtrack has a big part for cinema. How it builds the emotion makes me love great movies even more. Now I want to listen to Kavinsky Night call.
Thank You so much for uploading new video. I was dying to see you guys again. Gr8 work.
Also, please continue the Directing Style series.
We're here to stay :)
Saw it when it came out years ago. Gosling had a string of really good movies back then.
Fantastic actor 👌
What would I be doing without you guys, seriously! Thankyou guys. ❤️
Happy to help :)
Great analysis! Please do more on Refn work! His last tv series “too old too die young” is very Drive alike, but not as analyzed in KZhead yet.
Fantastic film. Now it is one of those cult films that transcends and everyone knows now. But still has it's magic. A great masterpiece with music and sound design that still makes a great suspenful work. Everybody talks of the narrative or the photograpby and yet, you approach this work in a very unique way witj the sound. Great class for today.
Stay tuned for next week ;)
@@StudioBinder bring something of villenueve for dune release. or david lynch

He released a sequel called Baby Driver and a third part called boss baby :)
More like a prequel
@@BaderMansouri prequel would be le samourai, taxi driver, and driver.

That's how we do!
Now do Too Old To Die Young. Amazing in so many ways, but considering StudioBinder's love of color, perhaps something on its "compound color palettes," or "color palette juxtaposition." Idk.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Each StudioBinder video is better than the previous one. And now I’ve got a great reason to finally watch the movie Drive. :D
It's a great watch!
