Saying Goodbye to Our 14 Year Old Norwegian Elkhound - Euthanasia in Our Home

This is a video documentary of our first experience euthanizing a family pet. Recording video of this process was one of the most difficult things for me to do. Diane and I decided that is was important to share our personal experience with you to help you make your decision as to when it is time to say goodbye to your pet, and how to do it as compassionately as possible. Watching and editing two days of video clips was torturous. I was living this heart-wrenching experience repeatedly. I cannot say how many tears I shed.
This video is long. But, I felt it important to include our final hours and walks with Shadow so that you can better understand her physical and cognitive condition, quality of life and why it was time to say goodbye to a member of our family and our best friend.
We love you and will never forget you.

    • She was NOT ready to go! She was STILL eating, walking around and drinking! It's honestly f#*ked up that they murdered her when she was clearly still living well just with a bit of difficulty that they could have gotten her treatments to help her mobility such as doggy chiropractor and acupuncture. They just took the easy way out and murdered her instead of bothering to spend the extra time needed to care for and elderly senior dog. She was clearly still doing well. This made me sick to watch. Euthanasia is disgusting and unnatural. It should only be used in the most dire of circumstances when the dog can not eat, drink, go to the bathroom and is crying in pain. That dog was clearly still enjoying her old life and able to do ALL those things and they stole that life away from her. It was not theirs to take. It was HER life. I am sure if she had the choice she would have wanted to stay until she passed away peacefully.

  • I just found your video the other night. I will be euthanizing my 19 year old dog tomorrow morning. She has kidney disease and heart disease. She was just diagnosed two weeks ago, but the stress of the vet visit (all the tests and scans) coupled with putting medications in her body to try and hold off the kidney disease, treat a mild UTI, and stimulate her appetite (due to the antibiotic causing her to lose it), spiraled her into decline. She had very few symptoms and a good quality of life before I took her to the vet. Now she has begun to fall apart. I can’t let her suffer. All the vets just want to do more testing and diagnostics and medications to help. But she is 19, there aren’t any years left that we can buy her. And in the end it’s a losing battle. All the medications do is mask the symptoms and stave off the inevitable end. The diseases will progress and she will suffer. And her body is very old and frail and seems to have worse reactions to the medications than to the diseases. So by trying to help, it’s only causing her more suffering. This is the most painful decision. She would fight till the very end. But it’s unfair to expect her to. I want her to have a pain free and peaceful transition into the next life.

He was already deaf and couldn't get up or move about without assistance. The blindness was for us was unbearable for him, we couldn't bare for him to be in silent blackness and so later that day we said goodbye at home. He was within familiar surrounding right to the end with me laying on the floor tight up to him. When the end came I just howled and howled, I was so distraught, and cried for days and days, and I was a 56 year old man. Even now 4 years later I choke up badly when I stop and remember him and our lives together. I am choking now. Best off to bed.

    • No it is not her time yet. My fiancé‘s dog had a stroke and when he got her he promised that he would take care of her until the very end. He held her up so she could go to the bathroom, he put the water bowl up for her and he held it while she drank the water and then he would take a towel and wipe underneath her chin. She couldn’t walk so he’s a cabinet maker and he made her like a wheelchair so she could walk. He never gave up on her ever. However she had a second stroke and was seizing. Even with the midazolam, that the vet gave her, she was still seizing. He kept his word and he took care of her until the very very end even walking for her and feeding her and giving her water. I have never ever seen such love in my life. Personally, I don’t think it was Shadows time. I think if she would’ve lost some weight, she would have been a lot healthier. In any case it’s not my dog and obviously not my choice. Nevertheless I would never ever put my dog down if they were not in pain and they still had enjoyment from food and walks etc. Everyone is different. I’m so glad I’m not their dog. RIP SHADOW

When I picked up my Bonhams ashes, I packed a bag & left town for 2 days with his urn seat belted into the passenger seat, his collar & blanket wrapped around it. I had made him a promise that I would take him to some of the beautiful places in my state, WV & that's what I did. At each river or lake, I left a bit of his ashes. When I go out of town to visit friends, I always have a bit of his ashes with me & leave some at the places I know he would've loved. I promised him he would travel everywhere with me & he has. For 14 years, he wasn't just my dog he was my comfort & protection in an abusive marriage. When we divorced, Bonham came back to WV with me. He was my everything. When it is my time to crossover, his ashes will be with mine & spread together over one of the most beautiful places he & I went together. Bless you for telling your story.

  • We had to put our toy poodle of 13 years 1 week ago 29/09/23 and it was the hardest i ever cried. The pain is unpreparable and hits in waves. He was a good boy and at death, still brought the whole family together one last time. Somehow he knows his going that night and was excited when the family visited him for the last time. He is back home now sitting on the shelf and we know he always will have a special spot in the family and the house. Thank you for being with me through the bad and good times Milo, my forever good boy

  • I want to thank you so much for posting this! I am struggling with making the decision on how to help my sweet Milo.. He is 15 years old and has almost completely lost his eyesight. His hearing hasn't been good for awhile and he becomes more and more confused everyday. He recently walked off the side of our deck and thank goodness he was okay. I can't stand to watch him go down hill anymore and its time to make this difficult decision. I have been researching like crazy on how I wanted to do it because I can't stand the thought of taking him into the vet and saying goodbye there. He has separation anxiety so bad and no longer likes the car rides so after watching this I do feel like this is the right decision for us! I know this was extremely emotional for both of you but I honestly do appreciate you sharing. This video has eased so many of my fears!!! You both are good doggies parents and you did the most selfless thing you could for shadow! The people that make nasty comments have no idea what they are talking about. Thank you again!!

I am so grateful that you guys shared this because it was exactly what I needed to know he is going to be okay and this is what I have to do for him! I am just shocked by some people's comments and lack of understanding. I pray they are fortunate to not have to ever make this difficult decision but I also pray that if they every have a beloved animal that is suffering they can put their feelings aside and do what's best for the animals. Anyway, Thank you both again for sharing shadows journey with us!

  • This video was incredibly difficult to watch but I’m grateful I did. I’m thankful that these kind people shared this very emotional moment so people like me can have an idea of the process. It helps to take away the fear and helps me to prepare if and when I may have to make this decision. The vet was so kind and understanding providing comfort and explaining each step of the procedure. My beautiful pet and family member will be 13 in March and I’m hoping she will be with us much longer but I know reality isn’t the same as what we want. I think passing away in the home with the people they love is the best choice so they can feel comfortable and relaxed in their final moments.

But it’s sad to know that she’s getting older and we may have to do this just hurts. I’ve had her my whole life, I don’t know a world without her in it. Such a beautiful dog. May she rest in peace, chasing all the squirrels, eating all the puppy treats she desires, and running free in a green and sunny field. I’m so sorry for your loss. ❤

  • We have had to euthanize our two previous dogs when they got to an age and health situation that adversely affected any reasonable quality of life for them. It is the final act of love you show to the pet who has given you unconditional love from your first moments together. How beautiful to be able to make this journey at home rather than having to do it in in the vets office, and how wonderful that you chose to share your experience with the world. Rest in peace, Shadow. ❤

  • We lost our little Bisquit suddenly and very unexpectedly in 2021. It was during COVID, but our vet was so amazing. They put chairs in their back lawn and let us hold him and say our goodbyes as long as we needed. The beautiful thing is that his ashes were buried in an apple orchard. We still look at his little collar and remember all the good times. We ended getting two sweet puppies to fill the void. Animals are amazingly impactful both during and after life. Our hearts go out to you both. Rest in peace Shadow.

We’ve been married 39 years and had a number of dogs. The worst part is that time when we had to put her down! Our baby never made one mess inside any of our homes or chewed something she wasn’t suppose to, she was half Chocolate Lab/PitBull looked like a dark chocolate PitBull she was beautiful! I was with my cat when she was euthanized, petting her and kissing her face until she was gone. The vet said the last thing she heard was my voice and the last thing she saw was my face. Imagine hearing those kind, comforting words. I was so glad that she saw and heard me before closing her eyes. You certainly made Shadow's last day a happy one. So sorry for your loss. • This might have been the hardest to watch KZhead video ever. It wasn't long before I was crying. After the vet suggested I had my dog put to sleep and I did, I've not been able to get another dog and it's been over 3 months. When you pet the same dog 10 times a day for 12 years that's more than 40,000 times... so it's not easy to replace them. The last dog I had was by far the best one ever.
