  • iPads are a luxury item for most people. Play a few games, watch KZhead, check mail, etc. Not a lot of power users out there that need to upgrade every year. My iPad is several years old and still works fine. That's the same reason people are holding on to their phones longer.

    • That’s where it is today. Only that we’ve gotten used to shorter release cycles and the dopamine kicks associated with that. But that doesn’t mean that people are upgrading all the time. Heck I know several people who still use the Mac Pro 2009 professionally. As it was pointed out in the video, most people really don’t see any need to upgrade their iPads these days. Also KZheadrs are pretty dependent on news and rumours to keep getting content and excite the viewers. That’s why they often make releases seem more important than they really are.

If not for Apple limiting updates to newer devices, these would work fine with every app. For regular users, they still work well, with the main downside being you’re stuck with an older version of Microsoft Office. But right now it’s not that old and still easily shareable. It’s like the 2018 version of office that got updates till like 2021 or something. And Office frankly doesn’t change a ton from year to year, it just gets heavier in its demands on the system, for most users. lol

  • Luke my dude, iPad is $449. It went down in price after 15 years of inflation. It's a solid device and holds down the spot the original iPad created. The Pros are a different thing. I expect the Pros will go up even further in price this year... especially since Airs are taking their place with Mini LED screens, M series chips, and 12.9 configuration. Pros are going to be positioned as truly premium pro products, with more impressive screens than ever, unique high end accessories, and more internal power than we usually expect from the pros. iPads are their own device category, not comparable to Macs. Expect the iPad Pro's price to blow past the MacBook Air, and catch up with MacBook Pro.

    @destructodisk9074@destructodisk90749 күн бұрын
    • Yeah they're barely the same products anymore -- I think it's clear Apple is moving the Pro in a different direction and soon enough they will be the first and maybe only iPads to get MacOS. And the only way for that to make financial sense for Apple is for them to be $2000 machines. That way you aren't killing the MBA or lesser iPads.

  • $499 Original iPad. You say you can get iPad mini, but you can also get the iPad 9th Gen (250) with Touch ID, the 10th gen iPad ($450 but on sale for $350), iPad Air is constantly on sale for 499. So comparing a non pro machine to a pro machine and saying it's more expensive is not really comparing equivalent products.

    @JeffKempster@JeffKempster9 күн бұрын
    • Agree, I think Luke is a bit unfair in his criticism over the $499 starting point (equivalent to ~$770 AUD). In Australia, the entry level 10th gen iPad is $750, and 9th gen is $550 and both are light years ahead of the original 1st generation wrt memory, CPU, displays, pencil-support, camera, wifi, touch ID security - for essentially the same $499. You can argue the Pro models are/aren't worth the major price hike, but they are in a different league compared to the entry level iPads. I agree that iPad OS is still limiting the device; the 'truncation' of file names, the lack of a real file directory tree, the clunky file management system etc. etc. is still geared for people who don't want desktop power to confuse them. But I appreciate that its hard nut to crack, because you could easily create a Frankenstein experience porting Mac OS to the iPad.

      @127Foxtrot@127Foxtrot9 күн бұрын
    • Yeah the iPad has actually gotten cheaper. It's just that the Pro models are the Lexus to the base IPad's Toyota. So of course they're going to be pricier.

    • This comment broke my brain. Because of how many iPads they created. There are so many of them that even I, as an Apple fan, wanted to buy one and simply gave up cause i was lost. When a company has 10 versions of their product - it simply shows that the company is not confident in what exactly they want. At this point their products becoming iPad R724ABG instead of being iPad 15 one and only, and it’s just ONE cause it’s the best one.

      @mrarticle622@mrarticle6228 күн бұрын
    • I don’t see the problem, they have the basic model, the larger Air, then the Pro. Thereafter, you spec out your desire in terms of memory, size, cellular, colour, price etc. So I see it as only 3 models to choose from, then individualising your specs, like any typical computing product.

      @127Foxtrot@127Foxtrot8 күн бұрын

  • I think what we should be asking about the iPad, indeed all of the Apple products, is “what needs updating?” Do we really need a physical upgrade or redesign? What problems or limitations would be overcome by changes? I don’t think the timing of this May event is insignificant, just a month and a half (or so) before WWDC where OS changes and a new road map could be implemented to take advantage of possible hardware changes. We have all gotten so used to the marketing ballyhoo around a timed release schedule, that we have overlooked whether or not we NEED new devices, software. Isn’t the iPad, or iPhone, or Mac good enough? What more can we gain by adhering to a rerelease schedule without true innovation?

I'm looking at upgrading with binoculars right now (meaning at soooooome point in the future, but not veeeeery soon), so the news that the iPad (especially the lower priced casual models) may be coming out of their current awkward phase are great.

I used to upgrade this each year, but this phone is just so heavy I was really disappointed. I’m leaning towards upgrading the phone to just the Pro and then buying an iPad Mini to use for the times I want to “scroll”, or use around home. • Yes im one of those 2018 iPad Pro people. 12.9 inch. Battery and cpu are still amazing. No game or app runs with any frame rate or glitches with 60 or 120fps. The iPad IS too good. They need to make more compelling apps and games that actually take advantage of iPads latest hardware. Or, add more features and accessories. Maybe time to start playing with the design and form factor more as well

  • Hoping for a new iPad Mini. I run a Mini 5 and Mini 6. The only issue I have with the 6 is the lack of a charging stand with USB C. This is why I still run a mini 5, as charging stands were available. The phone ones I've tried are too small to properly support the mini 6. The iPad mini is the perfect size for what I want it to do, and I'm usually disappointed that Apple does not update as often as the other iPads. I did have a 11 inch iPad Pro, but never used it. Add Mag safe charging and a proper charging station and I'll but a couple straight away.

Enjoyed watching 🥳

  • My 2018 11" iPad Pro is still going strong, and all the updates since then of the Pro iPads have amounted to basically rearranging the deck chairs (hopefully not on the Titanic) with no compelling reason to get an updated model. I can't decide whether the 2018 version was so groundbreaking that its been hard for Apple top it, or if they've been just been lazy and phoning it in since then (given that the the selfie camera still hasn't been reposition in all these years, I'm leaning towards the latter).

  • I'm interested in replacing my ipad air 1 with an iPad Mini, depending on what drops I might either get a refurbished iPad Mini 5 or 6, but if the new iPad Mini has an M1 or M2 I'd probably get that provided the price stays around the same. I'm looking for long term support in that form factor.

  • I am ready to upgrade. My current iPad Pro got dropped and has a couple of small screen issues. It's only 4 years old but I use it a lot and besides the better screen I'd like to get more storage than I have now. I use my iPad more than my phone because it has a larger screen. Plus if I get at least 1TB I'll get more memory if it's the same as the previous generation. I hate when my apps have to reload even when I only have 3 or 4 open.

The reason is I am hoping that they chip that gets placed into that device has the hardware retracing so that I can play games that are AAA on the device using my Galileo G8 modified. If the seventh generation retains the same form factor, some make shift keyboards that I have purchased will work perfectly for the iPad mini seventh generation. I feel that this is the best iPad for my usage.

  • My iPad Pro 2017's battery is not long for this world. It started failing a couple months ago and it's driving me nuts. I've had to do a few things to adjust for it, and now I'm evaluating my needs. I would love if I could write python, and have better file management and syncing with my NAS or git. If so, I'd by a 13 in pro with as much RAM as I could get with a magic keyboard. If not I may snag an M1 or M2 Air + pencil depending on pencil version support and features and use it for email, web, youtube, ebooks and leave the coding to a laptop. I'd rather 1 device, but cheaper ipad + laptop might be the way I go. Have to see what they have on offer so I would have picked up an air already.

  • I do want to get a mini, but I'd need a LOT of improvement to consider upgrading my iPad pro. It's 2022 and perfectly fine. And even if there's a ton of improvement...does it matter? Do I need it? I think the only issue I have is the lack of battery life. It won't last a day of lectures. Also the only reason I got a pro to begin with was the screen size so I guess I would be switching to an air anyway if I were to switch 😂

  • I'm still happy with my 4th gen iPad since I only use it for KZhead. The gap between Phones, Tablets and Laptops is closing faster every time Samsung or Apple release a newer phone or tablet and include more RAM or a bigger display. Even the keyboard on the iPad can be seen as a sign that there is no need for a Tablet and Laptop. Building on top of that, some Windows Laptops are even equipped with SIM cards, so who needs an iPad when your laptop can be used as a netbook and a computer. I think its clear to say that with the battery life improvements on most laptops, and the larger screens that we get on phones like the iPhone 15 or phablets like the S24 Ultra are a clear sign that the days of tablets are over. Not to mention that if you need a tablet and a laptop, just get a folding 2 in 1. That's just my take on the situation. The only portable computer I will be purchasing in the near future at all will probably be a handheld like a steam deck. My iPad 4, LG VELVET and ASUS ZenBook 14 OLED serve all the purposes I need.

  • Got it bang on here. I use an iPad for 3 things... Word processing and spreadsheets when I don't have access to a laptop, displaying sheet music in my lessons, and as a sound module for live performance in conjunction with a midi controller. I don't need a crazy display, but it would be good to have software like MacOS where I could utilise logic and other similar programs just by transferring projects from my Mac to iPad and back again. Without it, the iPad isn't really that useful in 2024. I will be looking to upgrade to (if the rumours are true) the new iPad air 12.9 but as for the pro, well it's too expensive for me. As you said $499 was a good price for an iPad, £1000/$1200 or more represents very poor value for money for what it is capable of doing. Either it needs to be cheaper, or it needs to be more capable. Or both. Otherwise it doesn't pay the rent.

  • I believe that the newer iPads will be marketed as more of a " keyboar- less" MacBook (but you can add the keyboard if you wish). I think that Apple will be featuring the new smart Siri which will now make it smarter than a bump on a log and make it much easier to use it as an aide to navigate the internet.. With the new Smart Siri on the iPad you will be able to command Siri to do tasks with your voice, (much like Alexa, but more) and use Siri to navigate through software and the internet to get things done without a keyboard in a much simpler way. Of course you can try to navigate with Siri now, but utilizing a bump on a log may yield better results.

Especially if they want to keep their shareholders happy. But imagine how much more energy they could spend on refining their products if they didn’t have to release new models all the time.

  • Still use an iPad 6th Gen because it still works. Moving to iPad Pro 13-ish when it’s released and will keep it just as long. The only reasons I’m moving up is because the slow transfer speed of edited videos is just too painful and the screen’s too small now that I do more video-editing. Not interested in Macs of any type yet. I’ll do that as I begin to replace my Win-laptops in the next 2-3 years. If the mini-LED goes to the Air, might be a tough decision on whether to just get my wife a M2 iPad Pro 12.9 vs the 12.9 Air - probably decide based on weight and whether the Air comes with pro-motion. She doesn’t do anything that requires the M2 or M3 so it’s a wash for the processor.
