    • Two objective facts that weren't mentioned here. Samsung's Tab lineup lacks professional apps, but actually can serve as a fully functional laptop replacement for day to day tasks. Multitasking in OneUI (even before DeX) just absolutely thwomps iPadOS. This makes the "who is the iPad FOR?" question worse. However, the iPad mini is arguably the best small form factor tablet available in the United States and has been for a few years. I'm not much for Apple's ecosystem anymore, but I keep considering coming back for that lil guy.

    • Recently bought my wife a 9th gen. Bought her the original iPad mini when we were in grad school. I use the small iPad Pro daily at work. Totally agree with you, it’s a no man’s land of almost good enough. Hence why, even though my wife likes having them to play with, I can’t really find a compelling case for one for myself. I’d like to, but it’s basically a big phone and I intentionally bought a 13 mini because I don’t need a big phone. 🤷‍♂️

    • phones getting "bigger" doesn't help in this specific use case because they're generally just really tall and skinny, which is a terrible aspect ratio for anything but watching movies filmed in cinemascope. a 6.8" display at 16:9 or 16:10 is much bigger and more useful for non-movie-watching tasks than these narrow ass things. I have a 6.1" (19.5:9) s23, and while it is much smaller than the 6.8" Galaxy Ultras overall, the aspect ratio makes that size gain pretty useless? I ran games on both my S23 and a oneplus 12 (6.8" at 20:9 aspect ratio, so even worse) and the UI elements in most games were pretty much just as hard to see. Outside of watching narrow aspect ratio movies, actual usage was so much more comfortable on my 10.9" iPad Air 5 with the 4:3 aspect ratio.

    • Vast majority of people buy the base one for 329. Period. It's still fast enough to do school and for kids. That is who use them the most. Not only that tell me who is gonna compete? Ill wait..... If android made anything worth a shit for tablets then there would be competition. But google ignored tablets for the last ten years then puts out a total shit basic tablet that didn't even move the needle.

    • I think buying any phones, tablets, or Apple's laptops brand new these days is a bit ridiculous, unless for whatever reason you absolutely need the latest for your use case. If you buy a gen or two behind, the tech is still solid and you can find them for half the price of retail or even less at times, whether it's used or new old stock being sold at discount. I got an m1 MacBook Air, m1 iPad Pro, and an m2 Mac Mini each for at least half the retail price.

I just think he is so disconnected from 90% of common users because of his job and expertise that it clouds his judgement. My kids have iPads for school and watching TV. I have an ipad for notetaking, reading, watching movies while traveling, light video/photo editing.... things I could bring a laptop for, but the ipad is just more portable and does everything well enough. And at $800, it lasts almost a decade. Few laptops boast that kind of longevity.

Regardless of growth in sales, one has to acknowledge that many people who want an iPad don't need a new one for ages, they aren't like smart phones we get ever 2-3 years.

  • It’s definitely a software problem. I do video editing, CAD, and graphic design. The iPad has the power to do all of that, easily; and the touch screen honestly makes it perfect for certain things I do. BUT the software is lacking, it’s incredibly limiting. It’s like putting a hellcrate engine into a Prius; yeah you have the power, but you don’t have the transmission, drivetrain, or suspension needed to take full use of your motor(M3). I tried to get by with my iPad Pro for years. Ended up finally selling it and going to a MacBook Pro. I still miss my iPad for certain things, especially things that the touch screen made super easy to do. I’m hoping Apple finally just merges MacOS and iPad OS closer together. If they do, I’d probably keep my MacBook and buy a new iPad Pro as well. But if the next iPads are just hardware upgrades(screen, camera, etc.) and not software; then I won’t be getting one. Apple either needs to make the iPad Pros software pro level, or just stop producing them.

Along with the iCloud Drive/Files, I can open my drawings anywhere without having to use Dropbox or Microsoft’s onedrive(which I hate). Macs are good for some and not good for others. Mac’s run most workflows very well, it mostly just depends on if you can adapt to the different hot keys and UI.

    • Yes. I have an iPad 9th gen. And while I do love it. It is so limiting. It really just is a glorified movie player. Best use case I have for it because it is not good for much else. It can do so much more if allowed! I also used it in side car and that was nice. But it really just is a tiny monitor. Not any actual use that pushes the hardware. These devices have way more than enough power to do so much more than we are lead on to believe! If the devices just let us do more they would have a real daily use for so many people.

Then they need to rebrand the mini for kids and/or users who want need to write down notes, calendar updates and are always on the go (more “pocketable”) iPad for students, teachers, realtors, on the job types (project managers) The iPad Pro for graphic designers, web UI creators, content creators on KZhead but pull out of it being for super users in business (not for excel please!). The comparison function apple has definitely helps on their website, but it is annoying that the Air, the 10th Gen and the 11 inch pro all need to be compared at once to effectively differentiate. M1, no m1; speaker count, storage limit, screen type, promotion or not, pencil 2 charging, stage display or not, camera differences or not, microphone versions, ram amount. The delineation is difficult for most people, which aren't watching channels like these

If my non-techie wife can figure out so can anyone else. Stop making it sound more complicated than it really is. That's the bigger problem, "tech people" want to over complicate crap when it doesn't have to be. All that stuff you listed off is easy to find. The website lets you compare 3 models at once, and breaks everything down. Also if you're near a store you can go in and ask and they are super helpful.

  • I am a Comp. Sci. student that uses an iPad Air more than my actual laptop. When it comes to taking notes, there is just nothing that compares. Typing on a laptop to take notes, I find myself spending too much time trying to format my notes in a way that makes sense and math notes are almost impossible. Paper notes are good, but it is harder to erase, there is no lasso tool, there is no copy paste, there is no document search (I use good notes which can search handwritten notes), and the list goes on. I also use my iPad for most of my homework too. You say that the lines are blurry, but I don’t think they are. The iPad is great at taking notes, drawing, practicing handwriting (my cursive has gotten a lot better since getting my iPad), watching movies (my friends and I have a movie night on Thursdays and the iPad is the easiest thing to plug into a TV and watch something on Disney Plus), playing games (I played a couple of games on the Apple Arcade Trial and it was great for that). Those things are just better on iPad than on your phone or a laptop. Sure, it isn’t great at editing videos, but neither is your phone. And yeah, it is not always the quick and easy way to do things like your phone, but neither is a laptop. The iPad is its own thing, but you are apparently not in the targeted audience. Long story short, I completely disagree with you. You are expecting the iPad to be a laptop, but it’s not. It isn’t for everyone, but if you make something for everyone, you make it for no one.

  • If they could just put a full touch version of MacOS on the iPad it would be perfect. Still have the iPadOS there as like a main overlay, but then have an option to switch to MacOS mode. MacOS can already run IOS apps (since its basicly the same OS), and its "LaunchPad" is essentially a toned down IOS interface. Also if you may have noticed, several of the Macs features have been changed to look more IOS-ish over the past few year, so this may be something they have had in mind for a long time. Having the iPads run MacOS with just a IOS overlay that you could switch between, or "unlock" with their keyboard attachment feels like it just makes a lot of sense. It would be like Windows 8 was trying to be, but not crap lol.

  • Using a Galaxy Tab and same problems exist definitely. Samsung tried to solve this with a psuedo-desktop environment with DeX but actually backtracked from that, too. And yesterday, I saw a Ryzen-powered Windows tablet (Minisforum V3) and it wasn't half bad. Microsoft's never-ending battle to optimize Windows for touchscreens has been annoying all of us with desktop PCs but it's actually solving a problem in that space. Windows 10X was for naught, but Microsoft's experience in that project enabled Win11 to become mature for both form factors. After being able to cram huge x86 architecture APUs in devices like Steam Deck and Minisforum V3 and and simultaneously optimizing entire OSs for ARM architecture, enabling SoCs like M2 and Snapdragon X Elite to do desktop work in all kinds of chassis, now we have two different approaches to solve this problem. The only thing left to do is to break this Berlin wall of an OS requirement. Make the OS fit both form factors. The hardware allows it now.

I use mine with the Logitech Folio case, which is fantastic, and I love using the tablet for media consumption, editing photos, and taking notes in class. Also is a very nice secondary display with Sidecar for my Mac on the go. As much as I love it though, especially at its price, I would find it difficult to justify the purchase for most people. Even for me, I still very much need a MacBook for a lot of what I do and I ultimately really don't need to have an iPad. Especially one this expensive. Huge part of the reason I love it so much is I am a tech enthusiast and it's a fun toy, plus I can afford to have one. I don't know about anyone else, but with upgrades coming next month I really don't feel the need or desire to upgrade. The better display would be nice, but I never do anything that would take advantage of a screen that's better for HDR. Also barely use the internal camera for video calls. Especially when you consider how ridiculously smooth the M1 runs, an upgrade just doesn't make sense.

  • Mine was a game changer for on site client work. The ability to take notes on the fly and mark up PFS, transfer them to Evernote and zap it to my workstation is indispensable. It’ll never replace my laptop, but I don’t want it to.

    • Bingo! It's a tool to be used alongside other things. I'd bet using a laptop in the same way you use the iPad would be a real pain.

  • The lower end iPads are good for two things imo. Media consumption and a computer on the go. For media consumption, phone screens are too small to enjoy a movie on a flight for example. As to computer on the go, if you are walking a warehouse doing an inventory, pulling an iPad out to make notes on what you have on each shelf works well. There are a lot of things they're suited for, just respect they exist for when you need a cross between size and computing power and not something that fits better on one end or the other.

  • I personally use an iPad pro (10.5 inch) to watch youtube, tv shows, movies, play some games with a bigger screen (ok, it's only mario kart tour), and some video chatting (I take private trumpet lessons, and an ipad is so much easier to use for that than a laptop, or at least one that can't fold all the way back), all, aside from the video chatting, in bed.. If I could, I would absolutely switch to an android tablet, because android is just better than ios, and I might even use that a lot more than I currently do with my ipad. Before I got my own cell phone, I used my ipad for everything (except for when I was at my windows computer).

  • iPads are actually pretty useful, when we read on the bed when about to nap or going to sleep, playing all Games on Ultra Graphics, Great Entertainment device for Movies, boomerang, mousepad, notebook, 3D/2D Drawing, Rendering, Sculpting, cutting onion on it, Bullet Shield, Self Defence Metal and a great Handheld Fan.

  • as an avid tablet user, this topic is a surprise for me 😅 since i bought my first ipad, i could not imagine life without it- work productivity, light gaming, entertainment stuff, and doing art as hobby with the pencil. i prefer smaller phones, so reading emails and work files off of it is not very convenient. i still don’t think ipad is a “replacement” for laptops, but i’ve been surviving with just my ipad and a desktop. so one can make do. the only big fuss i have about ipads is that they still release 64gb version of the thing😅

  • I have a 2018 1tb iPad Pro and no reason to upgrade. Software definitely holds it back

  • I love my iPad Pro. I use it for KZhead, reading, note taking and digital drawing. It was expensive but totally worth it to me.

  • I own a 10th Gen iPad, I was actually gonna buy an iPad Mini due to assumption being cheaper so bought the 10th Gen for the bigger screen and reading my textbooks for my studies, emails, reading articles on the web, newsites. Love it, I don’t have any buyers remorse owning it, I use it daily. If it wasn’t for it I wouldn’t be thinking of upgrading to an iPad Pro in the next 3-4 years.

  • I’ve managed to craft an entire music career recording on my iPad and now having the ability to use Logic Pro on it it makes it so much better!!! Personally I prefer it to a computer for music creation and stuff like that
