Dumpy Part 5 - Break my Brake (cable). Dumpy got abused by a neighbour...

Dumpy's usefulness is now at Legendary status - so much so that one of my neighbours 'liberated' him to do some work at his place. Centre pivot steering takes a bit of getting used to and it can catch you out if you are not used to it - the result was my neighbour accidentally drove half of Dumpy off a retaining wall. Then to stop him rolling away he pulled the parking brake lever so hard he snapped the cable. Question - where do you get an obsolete hand brake cable for a machine that is nearly 50 years old? Answer - you don't, you have to make it yourself. So cue a video lesson on how to make obsolete hand brake cables for classic plant machinery. The Guys at Winget in the UK were as helpful as ever and supplied a lot of parts I needed, but it seems the miracle of a replacement 50 year old cable was one ask too many. As always, HUGE thanks to Steve Hodge at Winget in the UK, he's a bloody legend that chap.

  • Your friend clearly has a great deal of expertise... Perhaps he should get a job testing things... to destruction.... Good work and good repairs!

    • My mate is a good lad most of the time, just on this occasion the centre pivot steering got the better of him. I think his expectation exceeded his ability!

  • I guess a pom might say you've done a proper job :). To think it was going to scrap, probably plenty of them that suffered that fate. I remember seeing one these working in my home town Toowomba when I was kid in the late 60's. Probably would require roll over protection these days.

    • Yes, I did try to do a good job of it. The two main reasons Everhard cited for scrapping were lack of roll over protection and also no emergency stop. Doesn't really matter to me I'm not planning on murdering myself. Dumpy copped a flogging this weekend on another back fill job. I don't know what I'd do without him....

    • Good question. The Lister ST2 on the machine had a Lucas starter on it, but it had never been used. I pulled it apart, freed it all off, tidied it up and got it working. Now I have a battery box with a push button on it to run the starter. Much easier than swinging the key. There is no alternator though, so I have to take the battery off and charge it from time to time.
