Tanningcote Town is a OO Gauge railway model of a town somewhere in the English Midlands, some time in the 1960s. Several viewers have requested a plan view of the layout, so included in this short is an overhead view of the entire layout. I also included a driver's eye view in both directions so you can see more detail.
The layout is basically a slightly modified standard Hornby track mat layout with all the track packs added plus a few more bits besides. Fits onto a 2.4m x 1.2m sheet of 9mm ply (that's 8 foot x 4 foot and 3/8 thick in old money). Currently analogue control but I want to go DCC at some point...
Greetings from USA. Thanks for an enjoyable and informative presentation. I like the different camera views and sound.
Gorgeous layout. Nice and simple
I have to say that is one of the best layouts I've seen in a 4 x 8' space. It's got a lot going for it and the way you've arranged it, it has more operation & fun then most layouts twice the size or more.
Thanks. I've got plans to do more, including DCC in the future. I'm working on a few things that should make it even more fun!
Excellent layout with a great deal of imagination shown. Good use of sound effects. Thanks for uploading.
Love this, I moved in to a new property last year and when I viewed it I completely missed a loft hatch in the roof. The day I moved in I saw the hatch, opened it and there was a ladder into the loft which had been turned into a train room with tables etc. I asked my neighbours and they said the previous owner had a massive train layout up there. Can't wait to get started on mine, you have given me the inspiration i need!!
You'll have to do a series of build videos so we can all see how you go. Good luck. And get yourself a copy of Anyrail.
An imaginative layout on a reasonably sized baseboard, so much more charm than so many of those 'exhibition layouts' constructed by those stuffed shirts who appear on KZhead.
LOL 'stuffed shirts' I'll use that one. Still a bit to do I'll get back to it after my current project then I'll make some more videos. Cheers for commenting!
Dope layout
Agree with all comments. Amazing what you have done with an 8x4 well done. With imitation being the best form of flattery in mind I am going to copy this layout because it is exactly what I want.
Go for your life, Stephen, if you need any more information, plans, pictures etc just email ask at ii-au dot com and I'd be happy to send you whatever you need.
@@robertltomlinson That is very kind of you Robert. Thanks and I will certainly do that. I am in Auckland and have just dismantled my 3rd layout as I am moving back to the UK in 3 weeks time. There are many reasons for that but one of them is the cost of train gear as opposed to here in NZ. Unbelievably expensive here!
Utterly charming, great sound and with a very rare and welcome cameo appearance by small extra piece.
Cheers, still got a bit to do and I'll get back onto it for more videos when my current project is complete. In the mean time it's nice to know that my small piece has made all the difference.
Your use of sound is amazing! Really good job
Great job. Am impressed and inspired.
Beautiful layout
Great layout, nothing missed, sounds and scenery amzing
Cheers. It's been getting some attention, suppose I should make another video!
This layout is amazing
The layout is gorgeous
Beautiful layout. It reminds me of the Father Brown/Grantchester TV series we watch from you here in the states. Cheers.
Absolutely brilliant so life like so real 👍
Looks great 👍🏻
Convincing layout. All the passengers at the station add to the scene - so many modellers omit this detail. Thanks for uploading.
There's passengers in the large maroon coaches too if look closely...
Great layout. Well done 👍
wow very very nice well done nice layout best wishes Ken
Awesome layout and a nice fleet of locos too. I love it, man.
Cheers. I've been slowly acquiring more stuff so when the yard is landscaped I'll be back onto it for more!
Nice little layout so much going on
Cheers, I've tried to pack a bit in. Gonna do a bit more soon I hope!
How lucky you are to have such a nice layout.
Cheers. Bit of effort, a bit of eBay and a bit of KZhead and there we have it!
super layout !! love it all the best dave
Cheers Dave appreciate the feedback.
Awesome video and layout I literally would watch a million videos on this if I could
I'm glad you like it, thanks! I'll make more videos as things progress...
I like your layout. It's look amazing.
Cheers, I plan to do a bit more but I've got another project in the way at the minute....
I got to say that layout is awesome I love it
Cheers. Still a bit to do - got a few other projects I'm finishing off so I'll be back onto it soon and I'll do some more videos.
@@robertltomlinson well keep up the good work
thanks robert as i said it looks fantastic
Cheers mate, appreciate it. Love your icon picture, I don't have a DMC but I do have a car that was made at the same time by the company that Engineered the DMC...
@@robertltomlinson me neither but i can alwasy dream the only problem is that i could not get in or out of one of them now due to my chronic disc disease in my spine i remember when they came out and i always love the gull wing doors i do have a 1/.24 scale replica of the dmc i was only 15 or 16 when they came out they were so different to anything at the time i only see one in my lifetime so far i don't trhink there are many of them here in ireland we could afford them lol i am hoping to start my own little modelrailway very soon and i love to see how all you other youtubers do so many amazing things with ye're layouts as i said in an earlier comment on yours it looks just fantastic stay safe regards james
Did you use all the track packs and then extend them with some straight and curved track ?
That's a good question, and yes I used all the track packs with some extra bits added. You cen get the parts list and see a detail plan of where everything goes in this video here. kzhead.info/sun/pdd9c86qkXWup58/bejne.html
Just found this superb video. I'm planning a similar sized layout and would love a copy of your track plan. Cheers
Just subscribed to your channel any chance of a plan layout many thanks
ask at ii-au.com and I'll send you the details.
Absolutely brilliant i liked the sound on the trains what ones did you use thanks
All the sound clips can be found on the websites listed in the credits at the end.
This is a great layout. Fantastic attention to detail. Would there be any chance I could get a copy of the track plan at all? Many Thanks.
The track plan and parts needed are shown in my latest video. Email ask at ii-au dot com if you want more detail. Cheers!

Great layout just subscribed to your channel.im a complete learner to model railways and I think your layout is ideal for the size I have ,so is there any way I could get a plan of your layout
@@robertltomlinson set of plans for model layout
@@davidcox7573 ask at ii-au.com and I'll send you the details.
Are there any companies who manufacture and sell complete model railways built ready to play like this?
I don't know, I doubt it as the amount of hours needed to make a layout like this would make them hellishly expensive. If you look on eBay and in the small ads you do from time to time see complete or partially complete layouts for sale. Also look on RM Web and ask a question in the forums, someone might have something for sale. Another place to look might be the local model railway club because they are always making new layouts and sometimes sell their old ones. I have a substantially complete 2nd layout I got from a deceased estate which could be made available, but unless you live on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland it is unlikely to be economic to acquire. Good luck in your searching though, I hope you find something that you would be happy with.
P.S. You can also look at the ads in the back of Railway Modeller, there might be something for sale in there. Sometimes there are adverts for a company that makes base board kits which might be a help if you need to speed things along a bit.
Robert, Great layout, very realistic. What are the total dimensions of the layout?
Layout is on a sheet of 12 mm thick ply that is 2400 mm long and 1200 mm wide. In the old money, it's about a half inch thick ply sheet 8 foot by 4 foot. It has a frame under it to stop it flexing.
@@robertltomlinson Thanks. I am sending you an email to ask if you would share the plan?
Would this make a good beginner’s project or should someone start off with a 6X4 style Hornby trackmat layout?
This was based on the Hornby Track Mat layout but lengthened by 2 feet (600mm). It is flat and easy to build. It gives some good operational options and has a lot of functionality packed in for its size. Definitely worth considering but then again I might be biased.
@@robertltomlinson Definitely lots of operational options, you’ve designed the track plan extremely well, also offering lots of workable space to create great scenery, I can definitely picture this as either a 1930s-1940s/50s GWR Branchline, somewhere in the Cotswolds or even as a modern day heritage railway, operating a variety of stock.
Came across this recently, is this based on the 1st generation trackmat? Did you glue and paint the scenery down directly to the mat?
The track mat was only the inspiration. Track mats are poly and nothing sticks to them, or at least not for long anyway. I painted the ply sheet green and tacked the track in the plan I wanted. Then it was ballasted and the ballast glued with 50:50 water / PVA with a dash of IPA and washing up liquid to help the mix spread. Once it had dried the tacks in the track were removed. Scenery was scatters, paint, sand etc straight onto the ply board.
@@robertltomlinson thanks. I'm looking to start building one in the new year. I've bought an old trackmat for £3 as a base or idea board. If I can get anywhere near what you've built here I'd be very happy. It is amazing
hello beautiful layout can i ask what size is the layout and at what height do you have the base bords from the floor regards james
The layout is on a 2.4m x 1.2m sheet of 9mm ply and standa about 900mm high off the floor. Don't have it too high as it makes it difficult to reach into the middle or to the other side if things go wrong. Having it lower will give you better reach but also puts it in range of small fingers...
Love the layout, please where can I download the plan?
I've made a plan in AnyRail software for you, email me ?????????? and I'll send you a copy, plus a JPEG as well just in case...
Can you send a list of the tracks you used please
This is the bill of materials for the layout:
Track R083, 00 Hornby Standard Track, Buffer/Bumper 30mm. 9 R600, 00 Hornby Standard Track, Straight 168mm. 11 R601, 00 Hornby Standard Track, Straight 335mm. 17 R604, 00 Hornby Standard Track, Curve radius 371mm, angle 22.5º 2 R605, 00 Hornby Standard Track, Curve radius 371mm, angle 45º 4 R606, 00 Hornby Standard Track, Curve radius 438mm, angle 22.5º 6 R607, 00 Hornby Standard Track, Curve radius 438mm, angle 45º 8 R609, 00 Hornby Standard Track, Curve radius 505mm, angle 45º 8 R610, 00 Hornby Standard Track, Straight 38mm. 4 R614, 00 Hornby Standard Track, Crossing 168mm. (left) 1 R620, 00 Hornby Standard Track, Straight rerailer/Straight uncoupler 168mm. 1 R636, 00 Hornby Standard Track, Road crossing 168mm. 2 R8072, 00 Hornby Standard Track, Left turnout 168mm. 10 R8073, 00 Hornby Standard Track, Right turnout 168mm. 5 R8090, 00 Hornby Standard Track, Flex 915mm. 1
What is the radius of the outside loop?
The main line outer loop uses Hornby R609 third radius curves, the main line inner loop uses Hornby R607 second radius curves and the inner loop for the branch line and sidings uses Hornby R605 first radius curves. Hope this helps.
