Dumpy Part 3 - Restoration of my Lister ST2 Powered Winget Four/40E

So the old Site Dumper I bought turned out to be a mighty and useful machine - better than any wheelbarrow, especially in the Queensland heat. Dumpy was so useful in fact that I decided to restore him back to original 'as new' condition. With a massive amount of help from Winget in the UK, CPM Engineering in Gympie and GD Geodrill in Illkley, Dumpy is now in fine form and fettle, ready to work for another 45 years...

    • The project was a good bit of fun. I made the effort to get it right - if the work of Winget can last 45 years then copying it should be good for another 45 years!

  • Fair play to you mate - I've always had a soft spot for the humble dumper and it's good to see someone adopting one and giving it a bit of tlc :-)

    • I have to say, they are an incredibly useful machine. The amount of material I can move in a day, with this and a small excavator, is astonishing. It makes the two machines together so much more productive it's not funny. And the kids love a ride in the skip, too.

    • @@robertltomlinson Yep they're great machines. I used to work in Sherwood Forest and we used them a lot for laying new paths in the woods. Had all sorts from Thwaites, Benford, Winget and so on. had a five tonner once with an air cooled Ford motor that really barked when it was working - you could hear it from half a mile away! Always fancied one of the Thwaites forward control machines - and sadly had to be sensible and talk myself out of buying this thing ; www.picclickimg.com/d/l400/pict/152798333443_/4x4-Mining-Dumptruck-4-wheel-drive-steer.jpg

  • Awesome save and rebuild..it seams with all the hydraulics you could build a loader bucket for it... (attachment) thinking out loud.. it was built to haul loads, privite use a loader attachment would be a back saver, and a push blade ... very enjoyable video... thanks for the video

    • That's not a bad idea actually, very ingenious. I can however save myself from that project as I also have a Yanmar B37 excavator. And you are right - both machines definitely save me from the aches and pains!

  • Good looking dumper , you haven't mentioned the electric starter, visible in several shots, have just bought a Liner dumper, similar state to yours doubt it will get the same level of restoration as you have done (poor thing), enjoyed the bids and have fun with her, all the best from blighty.

    • You are correct, Roger, I haven't mentioned the electric start. I'm not sure it's ever been used and certainky wasn't used by the previous owner. I did give it a try but suspect with many years of sitting idle it has all seized up. I do want to free it off though as it will make starting much, much easier!

    • Update on the electric start. It works! I've mounted a battery box and ran some cables to make starting it sooooooo much easier. I feel another video coming on....

  • Wow, I´m deeply impressed, You gave her the whole nine yards- awsome mate :) And that red makes it faster, i guess? Ferrari comes to my mind when i see that color ;) I bet You had a brew when received that message about the history of Dumpy, the only one left of its kind and matching numbers- just incredible! If i was to come to Australia (I´d really like to) I´d very much like to meet with You and Dumpy to have a little spin. Some people rescue cats, some rescue torn machines, i get why someone would do that. The best comes last: You did our world a favour by restoring this to it´s former glory, it is proven to be more environmental to fix up what´s already there instead of produce a whole new one. And for the smoke: THIS kind of diesel emits way bigger particles than some new, fancy-dancy from today, some cloth mask would be able to filter that. My point is that if some new diesel what is ment to be run with a sud filter is run without those fine particles go right in the depth of your lung, no detour. The particles had to be finer to achieve effective filtering. So this little rascal being still around is the right way to go and when back up to spec there won´t be that much smoke at all. I hate rolling coal. So, with even more words: Darn sweet job, mate!

    • Cheers! Yes once I figured out how useful Dumpy could be, it became clear that a new skip would be needed as the old one was so badly corroded. So if it had a new skip, it might as well have new everything else as well, and get painted. So I decided to go the whole nine yards and give Dumpy another 45 to 50 years of life. It's such a useful machine I have no idea how I survived without it in the past!!
