Dumpy Part 2 Winget Four/40E Lister ST2 Diesel Head Gaskets & Oil Leaks Fixed

Well thanks to the Guys at classicmachinery.net Dumpy has been identified as a Winget Four/40E. His hydraulic hoses have been replaced, the brakes are adjusted and working, plus he's been put to good use in the garden. BUT... He leaks oil badly and smokes like a chimney. Cue the simple task to replace a few gaskets, as supplied by stationaryengineparts.com. How hard can it be??

  • Hi Robert, thanks for your video. many years ago i used to repair these Engines and with the leaking oil in and around the Cylinder Cowling it was always blown up by the Flywheel from the main bearing housing oil seal. The Cylinder base rings, ie, the copper gaskets were another source of trouble as well. I don't know if you went that far on your Engine but if you didn't, then you had a good one!. cheers.

  • Heij At first i thought this would become a rather quick and dirty makeover when i watched the first part but this convinced me otherwise. You went in there, got Your hands dirty and fixed up the little rascal nice. I like very much the fact this is well constructed and serviceable, most other engines need to come out to do what You did. And i bet You are as delighted as me that obviously no major issue popped up, no bolts cracked and even that amount of abuse couldn´t kill it. Please be nice to the little bugger but put it to work now and then, diesels like to work, that´s what this is built for. They don´t like light duty too much so please show us what Dumpy (a nice name for it- by the way) can do when it´s up to spec again. Maybe getting up an incline fully loaded? I like the sound when they give all they got- and then some! Boy, do i get exited abot that ;) So, with many words: Good Job, Buddy.

    • Cheers, I've got a few clips of Dumpy at work, and it's been raining here so Dumpy has been up to his axles in mud moving loads of earth and rock. Maybe Dumpy should make a dirty movie?

    • Hang on a bit, Dumpy is away at the metal bashing spa having some tin worm treatment. Suffice to say he's getting so much attention he's in bits. Hopefully in a couple of months I'll do another update video and Dumpy should be looking pretty good by then!

  • Might dirt have gotten into the oil holes in the shaft?

    • Yes this was a worry so the journals were taped around with PVC tape to seal the holes before the cleaning took place. Once the cleaning was done, the tape was removed and the sump filled with old oil. The engine was then hand cranked until oil was being pumped out of the journals, so as to flush anything out that may have got in. Then re-assembled.
