China’s determination to assert its disputed sovereignty over the entirety of the vast South China Sea has sparked increasing clashes with its neighbors in recent years, particularly the Philippines. CNN’s Ivan Watson joined the Philippine Coast Guard for two days, the first time foreign journalists have been allowed to embed with the fleet in decades. CNN’s Erin Burnett discusses with Seth Jones, Vice President of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. #CNN #News

  • Someone should rename the "South China Sea" to "Asian Sea" If we keep calling it "South China Sea" then they think the whole damn sea belongs to them.... 😲

    • I had ordered a nice meal of Beijing duck the other day and just when the waiter brought it a few guys in Chinese Red Army uniforms rushed into the restaurant and grabbed the duck and said that I had no right to it - that it was property of the CCP. Even worse for the owners of the restaurant though as more Red Army guys rushed in & seized the entire restaurant saying they had a right to as the restaurant's name had the word Chinese in it.

    • China claims islands, saying it's theirs since ancient times. But they weren't claiming them before, when they're poor. Money is power. They warn that the Philippines makes things worse (for the Philippines) engaging other countries for military support. Switch the situation: China being tiny and no match to a superpower Philippines. Would they be suicidal to confront alone? Can the Philippines say the same thing: "China makes it worse for the Chinese by asking military support from other countries.

Geographically it makes more sense that it belongs to the Philippines as well, my brother worked in a medical center in one of the islands in that area, there are families there with children who are very dependent on these resupply vessels and the Chinese coast guard had been terrorizing that supply route.

This is an area of inherited historical sovereignty. The European powers that have long ruled Southeast Asia have long respected China's sovereignty in the area within the line. After World War II, the recovery of the South China Sea Islands was internationally recognized, so the dashed line map is widely recognized internationally. . • Qin Hui:“The closest thing to China's urban and rural dual registered residence system is the former apartheid system of South African whites against blacks. The common characteristics behind them are the inequality of low human rights, no property rights and public services.” The most fundamental reasons behind China's registered residence system are three inequalities: the first is the inequality of human rights, especially the lack of secure housing and residency rights for Chinese migrant workers in cities. The second issue is unequal property rights, as the land of Chinese farmers is not their true property and belongs to collective land owned by the state. The third issue is inequality in public services, where government officials, senior officials, urban residents, and farmers enjoy a huge gap in unfair social welfare benefits. Today, China's negative welfare system has increased the wealth gap and urban-rural polarization. Especially in the context of economic globalization in the 21st century, China's negative welfare system and low human rights advantages have become even greater. This has led to the exploitation and enslavement of the vulnerable groups of most of China's lower class farmers, resulting in the emergence of red sweatshops that exploit Chinese migrant workers more than capitalist sweatshops. If free and democratic countries around the world cannot unite to exert pressure on the Chinese government to improve the human rights and welfare treatment of Chinese migrant workers, then the labor welfare treatment of free and democratic countries will be affected and they will have to lower their human rights and welfare treatment to align with Chinese migrant workers. For a government with unlimited power, unlimited accountability can be exercised until it cannot bear it. The way out for China still lies in a gradual and peaceful transformation, with two key points: first, limiting the government's power; Secondly, the common people should vigorously seek welfare from the government. By achieving these two points, the ideal constitutionalism and democracy will also come. I think pressure can be continuously applied in both aspects. Gradually improve one thing at a time. The biggest problem that ultimately leads to the current system is the problem of too much power and too little responsibility, constantly being compressed. When it comes to matching power and responsibility, China's political system changes.

    • This article has helped me understand South China sea better. By Peter Y "Why has Xi Jinping aggressively pursued Chinese terroritorial claims in the South China Sea?" South China Sea reporting in the West is the most biased and wrongful one against China and one, if not corrected, can lead to a disastrous war that no one wants. This story is not about China, or Xi Jingping, aggressively trying to take over areas of sea that did not belong to China. It is about how US changed a post World War II world order established between it, China and England. Let me start with Japan. After WWII, when Japan surrendered. also known as the Proclamation Defining Terms for Japanese Surrender, contains the following statement: “ the "Japanese sovereignty shall be limited to the islands of , , , , and such minor islands as we determine," as had been announced in the in 1943”. This document was signed with Chinese participation. That is the “we” in the sentence. Please note that Japan was not allowed to have Okinawa, on which there has been years of protest against US military bases. Neither was Japan allowed to occupy the island “in dispute” with China. US recognized this fact from the end of WWII until 1951, when it convened the so-call “San Francisco Conference of 1951” by specifically excluding China. In it, US made unilateral arrangement that would deny Chinese ownership of the islands that it previously recognized as belonging to China right after WWII and put them all “in dispute”. These include island “in dispute: with Japan, Philippines, Vietnam and all others. To this day, Japan does not have sovereignty over the island “in dispute” with China. America took over its “administrative” duty at San Francisco Conference from China and promised to relay it to UN. It never did. US kept the “administrative” rights until 1971 and then gave to Japan, at the opposition of China. When US signed defense agreement with Japan, the document had to be modified to cover “administrative” regions, instead of just the sovereign areas like all the other defense treaties it signed with other countries. For betraying China, US, in return, got Japanese record of biological experiments done on Chinese people without anesthetics as well as biological weapons and denial of atrocities against Chinese people during its invasion of China. Japan is a country whose territorial ambition exceeds the size of her sovereign lands. For lying and for hiding from war crimes shielded by US, Japan is willing to subject its country to be a shameless vassal state of US. It is a country existing in shame with national psychological ramifications. Now let us talk about Philippines. Why did US not return the island “in dispute” with China back to the Philippines when it left as the colonial master of the Philippines? The answer is very simple - US knew that the island never belonged to Philippines. When US defeated Spain and took over as the colonial master of the Philippines in 1898, these two countries signed the Paris Treaty of 1898. In it, both countries acknowledged that the territories of Philippines lied EAST of east meridian 118. The island in dispute? It lies west of east Meridian 118! It is really that simple. Philippine did not grab these island until after the San Francisco Treaty of 1951, from a still-militarily-weak China. But for the policy of “anyone but China” by the world’s hegemony, there should have never had any dispute in the South China Sea. It is the same story for all the other island in South China Sea. According to Wikipedia: List of countries with overseas military bases, China has less than a handful of overseas bases, none of which are located in South China Sea. Whereas the United States has over 400+ overseas military bases, in Japan, South Korea, Philippines, etc, surrounding China.

Only China continues to insist that it is illegal, despite being an UNCLOS signatory. Secondly, China's sovereignty claim over areas within its so-called 9 or 10-dash line has already been declared illegal and this ruling was accepted globally. Thirdly, China cannot claim sovereignty over the area by using historical claims because even its history and historical maps did not consistently and clearly define the Spratly Islands, Scarborough Shoal, and even the the Paracel Islands as its own territory. Lastly, China cannot claim the South China Sea as its own lake and part of its territorial waters because it is not a lake and its not within their land boundaries. Even if China includes Taiwan as its territory, it is not enough to support a claim of sovereignty over the SCS, more so the WPS.

In that video, they were able to record how a CH “fisherman” first just casually approached a Pinoy fisherman in Philippines territory (Shalborough Shoal).. Casually Taking some of his catch. The right thing for our fisherman to do back then was say *“Hey! You're tresspassing! Why are you here?”* but NO... Bec. Of ignorance of the law AND no Philippine coastguard to implement law on site, Our poor Fisherman felt inferior in his Own Turf, and allowed the CH Tresspasser to take his fish. If you're a powerful country... That's INTEL. It means that and is unguarded and ripe for the taking. Reporters returned a few years later and found that after 2-3 years, there are CH coastguards in the area. Wow! The development from their first visit was quick. From taking fish on out own turf.. To situating their own govt. Vessels! Then 2024... It's this. They have gained full confidence and trying to brainwash people with this crap. • So, according to this video, things haven't gone wrong already? Adding further lines in their maps, expanding so far as to even send fishing fleets all the way to Australia because their own waters are fished out because they don't understand the concept of natural balance (which is ironic cuz of yinyang), sending direct threats that Taiwan will be "reunified" with the mainland by 2027 as in meaning it'll happen either with or without the consent of the Taiwanese people, and the constant increase in the cheapest and worst power plants known to mankind which has made it a country with A THIRD of the world's greenhouse gas emissions? So that isn't wrong, eh? Yeah ok, "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" sure seems to be the mantra until it reaches the point where it gets all up in your face about it.

    • @@sonialelii9038 Well, yeah, that's part of it. But at the time, there was little incentive other than "you broke our agreement!" for the US to take real action. For every action, there's a reaction. Trump forced his way through, but even he conceded on key areas because of push from the highest US industries. So imagine what a democratic president, without a pre-established narrative, could realistically pull off sanctions-wise, or militarily? It was one of those typical political moves where Obama at the time was making it appear as if they did something, but in reality did nothing. It wasn't the first time a political leader has done that, and it won't be the last either. But the problem started way before that. The root cause of what made China strong enough to do all this, was Kissinger and Nixon. Nixon was a puppethead in regards to this, but Kissinger especially was the root cause of the entire global stance on China. The "slogan" that Kissinger sold to Nixon, and spread across the world, was that instead of forcing the comm country (it gets censored if I write it out fully) to accept democracy, Kissinger thought it would be better to "sell" democracy to them. So by pumping money into their country, they'd "see the good of democracy". This was a stance Kissinger held throughout his entire life, except in the latter years when he openly admitted that he thought the world should just "give in to China already". It's only recently that the US businesses are waking up to the problem, while Europe on the other hand is currently accepting any "helping hand" given to them.

People of China stop harassing to filipino fishermen coz Scarborough shoals and Spratley's island were Philippine territories . According to UNCLOS law no one can claim an island unless it is capable of human habitation or economic life of its own or else it is entitled to an extended continental shelf about 200 Nautical Mile from Exclusive Economic Zone.whereas, Spratly's island is 200-NM to EEZ of Palawan, Philippines so therefore Spratly's island is territory of the Philippines.where as China is very far from Spratly's island it is about 800-NM EEZ.you may cause of tension and it leads to 3rd world war😢

But that's like saying an army that includes counting bicycles as vehicles has the world's largest number of army vehicles. The US has the most powerful navy by far over any other and it's because those ships are so powerful that they don't need as many. Please don't be fooled by the exaggerations of journalists.

  • The Philippines did everything it can to maintain the peace diplomatically. The bottom line is, China is not willing to accept International law, in particular the UNCLOS and the 2016 Arbitral Ruling which unanimously favored the Philippines and invalidated the Chinese’ 10-dash line (9-dash line previously). The international community should not turn a blind eye and should support the Philippine position. Remember the lesson of history. As a metaphor, when Hitler, Mussolini and Imperial Japan were wreaking havoc and pursuing their expansionist desires in the 1930’s and early 1940’s, at some point, some countries and the US initially turned a blind eye. Countries with autocratic leaders that have absolute power and who have expansionist desires must be keep in check in pursuing their desire for hegemony. It’s the duty of every civilized country to speak up and defend the rules-based international order and freedom of navigation that maintains the peace and status quo.

  • Of course China is building up its naval fleet. When it tries for Taiwan, it's going to have to try to take everything it wants in the South China Sea all at once. That means Taiwan, Japan and South Korea in direct military combat for supremacy. I think China would be willing to enter direct combat with other countries in the region as well, which would explain why China was so determined to get Australia to become dependent on it for economic ties, materials, minerals, manufacturing, etc. Not only do I think China will try all three neighboring countries at once, I believe that's the only thing that has kept them from trying for Taiwan. I also wouldn't be surprised if China keeps supplying Russia weapons in hopes of weakening it to the point of Russia becoming heavily reliant on China as a trade partner, for manufacturing, for technology, and even military protection as Russia's military gets more and more hollowed out by Ukraine. Dictator Xi wants everything from China's claimed lands that was taken during the Century of Shame. That includes land taken by the Soviet Union. China wants revenge against Japan. China wants revenge against the West for the Opium Wars, which explains why China is funneling fentanyl precursor chemicals to Mexico's cartels to kill US citizens. On the other hand, you have another dictator, Putin, who wants back everything the Soviet Union lost during its collapse. It wants all of the land, all of the resources, all of the populations' obedience. It doesn't matter if it's a NATO country because he has his Russian oligarchs' money completely funding the MAGA movement, as well as the extreme Left in hopes of causing as much division and chaos as possible. As if that wasn't enough, he has his malignantly narcissistic, greed driven, overcompensating useful idiot as the Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, a puppet that has already sold out Ukraine AND NATO to curry favor with his daddy Putin. The US, Europe, and a slew of other countries are in for a rude awakening if the Republican Party doesn't stop their fascist bullshit. If the Left doesn't pull their heads out of their asses and refuses to vote for Biden, Democrats, and democracy, then the world WILL see World War 3 starting within 5 years, with Russia and China being the culprits and aggressors.

    @dmgranger90@dmgranger90Ай бұрын
    • I think WW3 is inevitable. The west can’t properly organize a coalition of countries to help Ukraine defeat Russia. Instead they talk of only ensuring that Russia doesn’t win. There’s no way they’re going to increase production of everything in time. Their weakness is that arms are supplied by private companies, and so you have to play by the rules of the market. China is a dictatorship and simply orders their production to 100%. The west could go on a wartime footing, but they won’t; not until hostilities start, and then it’s too late. The only thing delaying full on aggression by China is that their economy is struggling and they are still vulnerable to a naval blockade. That will only delay, not prevent, war. And when the war is two weeks old and the US is running out of weapons, they will introduce tactical nukes. That’s when things will get really scary.

They still need maybe 5 years to build up their forces to take Taiwan- that's assuming they don't continue having supply chain issues for manufacturing. But time is not on their side as their current navy is not capable of upgrading over time like how US ships are. If they want new tech, they literally have to ground-up make a new navy. They going for numbers over quality. Japan and Korea are significantly more prepared than China so I doubt that's actually their plan. They would need to align with North Korea, Russia, and Iran, to even stand close to a chance with those ambitions. That would make it difficult for China to be seen as a "world mediator" image they've been dying to take so they can "replace" the US. All of this is saber rattling to see how other countries respond.

  • The recent aggression by China against the Philippines Coast Guard and re-supply boats is deeply concerning and violates international norms. The US Navy's vigilance in monitoring these actions is commendable. As someone deeply invested in regional stability and the principles of international law, I believe it's imperative for the US to take decisive action by imposing targeted economic sanctions against China. Economic sanctions can specifically target industries and entities involved in China's aggressive actions, particularly those responsible for militarization efforts in the South China Sea. By hitting them where it hurts the most, we can send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated. Coordinated efforts with our allied nations to implement multilateral sanctions will further amplify the pressure on China and demonstrate our unified stance against its disregard for international law and the sovereignty of neighboring nations. Protecting Philippine sovereignty in the South China Sea is paramount, especially in light of our Mutual Defense Treaty commitments. It's time for us to stand firm and ensure that China respects the rules-based order and the rights of all nations in the region. Together, let's uphold the values of peace, stability, and mutual respect. #USPhilippinesAlliance #StandAgainstAggression
