Alpha's Step-by-Step Self Haircut
You'll need the following: handheld mirror, sharp scissors, comb, and hair clippers.
1. Wet your hair -- when you're finished, towel dry.
2. Comb up off the sides and find where you normally part your hair which sections your hair.
3. Hair clippers typically have 5 attachments and microadjustments. Alpha starts with #4. Start at the temple, go up, and fade out (not up and over). Repeat to the other side. Last, grab your handheld mirror and do the back
5. Next up is the #3 attachment and then the #2 attachment. When he goes to #1, he moves the blade as far out as it can go. He fades lower at sideburn and base of neck for a tighter look. Roll the clippers for a gradual fade rather than a hard line.
6. Clean up around the ear and neck -- you may need help as this step is a bit tricky. Go nice and slow.
7. Progress to the top of your head -- your hair needs to be dampened on the top. Then pull up a sections and cut a bit of the ends off. Move section by section over your hair.

I started with a mop and it was kind of difficult to start. You have to comb your hair into a part and just keep going with your clippers on the largest gaurd until you finally cut all the long.ass hair off

I cut my hair for the first time, thanks to your inspiration! The main issue was going around the back i don't have a hand mirror. I was able to do a decent fade regardless. I just used my hands as placement to when to stop cutting. This def gets better the more you practice

Thanks alpha m. I have been cutting my own hair since March. As long as your not a perfectionist it is a great way to save money. The trick is to not cut your hair super short and just practice. This is a savings of 300 a year. Not alot, but every little bit adds up

Thanks. Been cutting my own hair since Covid, takes a while to master it, but practice makes perfect. I doubt I will ever go back to the barber. Shaver cost me $50 and I have saved not just money but time, scheduling appointment, waiting in a chair for my turn etc, save time and money. Not everyone has the right type of hair, but if you have straight hair, you can do it

I never cut my own hair before the quarantine, I usually go to the barbershop once a month but here I am cutting my own hair every two weeks almost, and we’ve been in quarantine for one and half months I cut my hair for 4 times, the first time I did really well but it took my like one and half hours! The second time it took me about one hour with all detailing and stuff and the third time it took me around 40 mins the 4th time it took me 25 mins at most and really well nice sharp cut!

Well.... everyone out here saying they messed up but hey, if your looking for a bit of hope guys i have now cut my hair twice over lock down for the first time after seeing this video. If you dont have a complicated haircut its pretty easy to do. I cut mine 3 back and sides and scissor cut on top (my usual cut) and it came out really good to be fair, infact i might not even be going to see the barber again after this. Not going to lie its difficult the first time you do it but by the second cut i got used to it and i am glad this video gave me the confidence to do it. so THANKS ALPHA M! A few tips for your first cut: make sure you spend time with the two mirrors and have a "dummy run" with the equipment first. meaning just get a feel for doing the back hairline with the clipper turned off. Always cut it further down than it should be when doing the hairline to start and then when you know where it will cut gradually bring it up higher to where it should be. once you have the initial line you can trim the back up once a week to make it easier to follow on the next haircut. The top is easy once you get used to the scissors, but again make sure you leave enough on there as you can take more off if you need to. The back can be hard to start with but its worth learning to do the entire thing yourself so you dont have to depend on someone else to do it. but honestly guys just do it! it took me 2 hours on the first try, second try was only 45mins and now i will do it every 2 weeks as it makes it easier to cut and follow the initial cut. It was 2 months before i got to cut my own hair so it will be difficult to cut for the first time, the longer you leave it the harder it will be to follow what you or your barber has previously done. Just go for it! take your time! DO NOT RUSH! and enjoy a fresh cut!
wow! thanks people 39 likes! just an update on this 3 months later.... i am still cutting my own hair and it now seems stupid to be going back to the barbers! i bet they are wondering where i am! still cutting my own hair for 3 months and i have cut it every 2 weeks. i changed things up a bit and i am letting the top grow out more. but thats the great thing, once you learn to do it all yourself its so easy to change your style. i am so glad i spent the time initially to learn how to cut the neckline as in my opinion that is the hardest part still, but i am getting there with it now. once you know what you are doing its so much faster than going to the barbers, cut it today and it took me about 30 mins. if i went to the barbers i have to drive down there and thats 10 mins both ways (20 mins) then i am waiting for a minimum of 15 mins, then the haircut 15-20 mins so it saves alot of time. and for me that is the main selling point, i dont want to wait around and chat to people i want the job done. i have also been cutting my fathers hair now and we are both saving alot of money and time, no brainer in my book. Again thanks AlphaM for giving me the confidence to try this, it has given me a life long skill that will save me money and time for years to come :). come on guys you got this! if you fail the first time keep at it!

@MechReports The good thing about people cutting their own hair during lockdown is that the queues at the barbers and hair salons would not be that long when they reopen. It removes some of the pressure from them and their clients.
