Bickleigh is a witness to a thousand years of bloody wars, revolting peasants and blue-blooded aristocrats. Today, owners Sarah and Robbie Hay run this Devonshire castle as a top wedding and events venue. But in an age where the customer is always right and the staff working downstairs is no longer willing to be lorded over by those upstairs, can they hold it together for the all-important summer season?
From Elizabeth II to Cleopatra, Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

  • Sarah should do more than point out things that need to done. She should help out. Seeing her point out where Richard needs to clean the carpet more made me want scream. I could never work for someone like that. If a customer complains that the table isn't clean. You apologize and clean the table. If you get a bad review there is a reason. • LOL! Before I saw this comment, the 1st 10 minutes of the video I noticed she was sitting while someone was cleaning around her and in one instance she pointing that they "missed a spot". lol Then I thought, "You're RIGHT there, clean the cigarette butts yourself!". Richard is BUSY!! By the time she walked and found Richard and walked back, she could have had a lot of the butts cleaned up herself. Also, seems like Richard is run ragged, perhaps they should invest in another employee. And invest in a riding lawnmower for Goodness' sake! I was shocked when I saw Richard mowing the lawn with that regular lawn mower!

  • If that is how it really is at that place, the film crew should have straight up confronted the owners about their abusive behavior toward Richard! They are not only taking advantage of him; but it takes them longer to track him down at what he's doing, than it would take them to do the piddly-assed job they think he missed! Sarah better learn how to stay in the background if she wants high end bookings...even when you own the place, you're the help, not part of the party...and for God's sake, greet people when they arrive, don't go barging to their room and push your way in!

    • A picture is worth a 1000 words, I think the film crew did an EXCELLENT job of showing how Richard was always working hard and how much time was spent hunting him down to pick up poop and butts. The part that killed me was when Richard went to task and was quickly cleaning up the carpet and Sarah kept pointing out the spots he "missed".

It was truly mindboggling to watch her. Then horrifying to hear her husband be so snarky with the client about the dirty table. My god. Hard to believe they're still in business if that's how they treat people; both the clients and the employees.

  • Yikes. I’m amazed this outfit has remained a business for as long as they have. Serving breakfast without at least using a crumb knife in between seatings? The guests weren’t wrong, thinking it was tacky to be sat at a dirty table. (Also, service was from the wrong side: serve from the left, clear from the right.) This is toted as a luxurious location, where expectations would aim toward a higher standard, but it’s run like an out-of-touch mom&pop roadside motel, where casual carelessness is more to be expected. The hostess opening the bridal ‘suite’ door while the guests were in there? They didn’t initially come to the door, intentionally, wanting to be left alone. No wonder it was requested the person barging in not be in attendance during the following event. The staff all need professional training in hospitality if this castle is to succeed as an event destination. The managers don’t know how to run the place or relate to their guests, and the staff needs some structure; guidelines, and reward for services going beyond the minimum.

Note to owners, if you look at the “bad ones” (reviews) as throw away material, you have an underlying problem greater than you’ll ever know. Who cares if you do your job? The snippy comments about an electrician not realizing you raked the courtyard and you expect him to bow and thank you? How sad that classism is rife within their mindset. And BYW, hire another grounds person. Anyone can see a grounds this large requires several groundskeepers. Poor staff. The most disturbing thing was listening to them put others down as if they were the king and queen of England and treating others as if they were serfs. Sad people act this way. I hope Richard finds a great job and a great place for all the fur babies he has rescued. Someone who has so little but takes care of all those animals is the person with the real class in my book. • So this couple bought an old 'Castle'... though let us be honest, it is rather ambitious to call it that. When the castle dates to the earliest Norman era, and could even predate it, being on of the very generation of stone castles in England, one can forgive the lack of distinguishing castle features.. the moat does not seem to encircle the place, for example, so not truly a moat, and the only two evident towers do not seem to have crenellations...yet, to have almost no features, is a bad move. It seems this Castle has no exposed dressed interior stone, yet also has no authentic paint of the medieval era, not any period wood paneling or and hung tapestries or brocade. The fireplaces I saw seemed wrong, as did the forecourt, stairs, and grounds. We might be able to accept that, as progressively more amendments and adaption to additional eras, moving from almost a Dark Age structure through the classical medieval period, in to the later Renaissance, and then the modern age, however, when you are selling something on the claim of it being place that is a thousand years old and still inhabited, people for whom that makes a difference between choosing it, and another place, are going to be disappointed, and you WILL see that in the reviews. So, these people bought a Castle, and one with a dubious claim to fame at that... and not think it grants them some kind of Nobility? So they can work their workers rather unfairly, and in some places, what would be deemed illegally, for the bare minimum wage, just as if they are Peasants? So they can project themselves in to the festivities of their guests? Even if this Robbie fellow is the cousin of an Earl, that does NOT make him necessarily an Aristocrat, and I can assure you, that woman is no blue blood. They bought the place, lord it over everyone, think they are nobility, act with such entitlement, and project themselves in to places class and decorum should tell them they have no right to be, whilst not learning anything at all in over a decade about what is the right and wrong way about running a business. I hope that place survives, but I truly hope THEY fail. What thoroughly obnoxious people.

    • Charlemagne's Valkhoff in Holland is called a castle even if it was demolished 200 years ago and one or two buildings remain. What you are looking at is the gatehouse but there are other castle buildings remaining. They cannot just 'add' crenelations to a historic structure. You talk so much nonsense in your post it would be nice and respectful to others, if you just buttoned up. Before you judge others, you're no blue blood yourself, not that there is anything wrong with that.

    • @@theblokeygent1754 what out buildings? A partial wall, perhaps, a part of a moat, but otherwise NONE of those outbuildings are 1000years old! What f*cking nonsense! If the main building is a Gatehouse , then if the primary one, it would have, absolutely, HAD, crennelations! So actually, YES, they COULD potentially add them back. There'd be a process, generally speaking with a Castle, you have to search for rubble of the original structure on site, potentially even using GPR to do so, or use the exact same materials, sourced from the same location, if not, but it IS possible, depending on if the original bore such features. If it is NOT part of the MAIN Gatehouse, but secondary one between the main one, and main wall gate, then it is NOT a CASTLE. To be a CASTLE, it must be a fortified structure, which exists for area defense or force projection, and is a personal family residence (as opposed to housing only military forces, which would make it a Fort), that is surrounded by a fortified, defensive, wall (as opposed to a Keep say, which is the building alone). If it WAS NOT part of such a structure, but an out building, or separate one housed within the grounds of such a structure....IT IS NOT A CASTLE, no matter what they call it. You are one who needs to STFU and sit down, you have no f*cking idea what you're talking about, rather youre just another loudmouthed self righteous d*ckhead, like the owners of this place.

Part of the responsibility in running a castle, involves the help needed to maintain it, regardless of additional cost, or don't take it on. One man can only do so much and owners are better served when he's working instead of attending meetings. None of these folks are spring chickens and I fully agree with Sarah that it is a lovely place and a privilege to be able to own it, so do so with a positive manner so it can be enjoyed. Perhaps take written minutes at the meetings and drop a copy to Richard's "inbox" placed somewhere on the property with private access. One person with so many varied tasks needs to get into his niche, find a routine and work hard without being bothered, or he, as a human, will miss things or be hurried and less focused. His tasks are NOT easy! I'm glad they did take time to sit down and talk, that sort of meeting is essential. Hope you're able to get him some part-time help soon! Or even a grounds manager to take the task of organizing maintenance off the hands of the owner and the worker, making the workers' self-determined routines as priority since they know best, whilst doing the actual work. If I was grounds manager and I saw cigarette butts around, I would not interrupt a worker and demand that it be cleaned up. I would have done it myself. If you support workers with respect and rewards and let them do their thing, they will have no choice but to be positive and respectful in return! Best wishes for all of your successes with such a beautiful, historical place!

    • Exactly, and as for the cigarette butts, etc. I would never expect a worker of mine to do a job I'm not willing to do myself as well.

  • The owners of this castle are clueless about hospitality. Richard is doing the job of three people

  • Just love, love, LOVE, Richard 💕 - He works so hard and puts up with such nonsense for little or no reward - and even with his personal challenges he has a great sense of humor - He made this show😊. Best wishes from K in the 🇺🇸

  • There needs to be more than one guy to do all that work! Also she actually needs to just Do Something now and again instead of delegating everything to that poor guy! The sad thing is that they are all getting on in age so they probably need to think about an exit strategy at some stage so they can relax and enjoy their retirement.

  • *Richard is balls.* I'd love to have such an able bodied and passionate employee. All stops there without him.❤

  • These people are an absolute nightmare and I wouldn’t be shocked if they aren’t in business anymore. They abuse poor Richard who deserves so much better than these entitled people running him around and abusing him. Also annoying that Sara criticizes Richard and the way that he was raised when he was literally in a children’s home.

  • The owners are horrendous to Richard,he has one pair of hands. You can’t have staff as friend. If he’s employed, fine treat him with respect, sit down at the beginning of the day, outline jobs, leave him alone. If he’s a friend, you shouldn’t be employing him.

  • Richard, he needs to set up a go fund me and get the public to back HIS dreams. Let them deal with their own shit. Is he going to be left the property when they die? Hell no, they're kids who don't give a duck will get it. End of story. Start your own life Richard instead of building up others who don't appreciate it

  • If the owners told me not to come again because the table wasn’t cleaned between guest, I would have blown up! If you run a b&b you have to remember there are other places to stay and it takes one negative review to kill a business!!All Sarah does is bitch! Take time and do it yourself!
