They were bred without fear for this purpose and are intelligent but stubborn. Don’t blame the dog for your lack of training it. It is our responsibility to teach them how to live and I must say what you described is NOT normal. This is coming from a person who has had dachshunds for many years.

It's hard for any adult to hear when someone comes in and judges their behavior, even harder for this young man to hear that this directly. Specially difficult when we know we've been behaving badly and are being called out on it. He really listened and handled it remarkably well. I commend this young man for really turning it around. • "A small dog needs as much discipline as a big dog." YES. So much yes. Thank you, Victoria. You're such a champ. I think that too many of the people who are attracted to the small, "cute" dogs are just oblivious that their dogs are still dogs, and need to be trained as dogs. Just because it looks like a plushie, doesn't mean it'll act like one. If you spoil your dog, and REWARD it for awful behaviour, it's going to turn into an awful little brat. (eg: intro, dog bites cat, family member grabs him and holds him in a hug. What the hell?) Your dog doesn't hate you when you discipline it. Your dog doesn't get hurt feelings when you teach it how to behave, using its own language. You have no reason to feel guilt for disciplining your dog. This is anthropomorphism, and does no favours to yourself or your dog. Your dog is a dog is a dog.

    @Acidfunkish@Acidfunkish5 жыл бұрын

I continuously tell them to train her but they do not listen. They’re absolutely oblivious to what they did that made her that way but it’s bc they always spoiled her so much, she’s had no discipline at all whatsoever her whole life.

      @gabychuels2955@gabychuels29555 жыл бұрын
    • @@gabychuels2955 The funny thing is that the more you spoil your dog (and the less discipline you give him), the more anxious and unhappy the dog becomes. It's almost exactly the opposite to what they think will happen, and it's not good for ANYONE. The dog then feels the need to take on a leadership role, because there's no structure or routine set by his humans. Your dog is not a child - he doesn't get hurt feelings when you discipline him in a way he understands! He doesn't feel a lack of freedom in family decision-making. When you discipline in a way he understands, create structure and routines, the dog feels like it can relax, be more carefree, because he understands what's expected of him, and YOU'RE taking on the leadership role, so he doesn't have to. It's not cute behaviour. It's not acceptable. A small, stressed out, anxious dog can still do a LOT of harm to someone, if they get too close - enough that you may have to have him put down. If you love your dog, you'll train him. It's that simple. I just don't understand how people can delude themselves into thinking that spoiling a dog makes him happy, when all behaviours show the opposite. STOP SPOILING AND CODDLING YOUR (especially little) DOGS!

      @Acidfunkish@Acidfunkish5 жыл бұрын
    • I'd even argue that small dogs need MORE discipline/training that big dogs, because it's about nurture AND nature. A lot of people don't see a problem breeding a small, fearful dog because it doesn't feel scary to us. In general, people care more about a large dog's mentality before letting it breed, so small dogs are often burdened with more genetic baggage. Plus, you have things like potty training that seems to take longer for a lot of small dogs, and a lot of things seem more scary to a small dog, so they may need more desensitization training to be confident out and about, especially around other dogs.

    • @@janavennemann4671 There was an episode of Jackson Galaxy's show in which the lady was CONVINCED that her cat was basically telepathically begging her to feed him her food, but the cat was really just glancing at her. Jackson tried to help her, but she kept feeling guilty and making excuses, even though her cat was, at this point, obese and ill. Making your pet unhealthy doesn't make it happy! Spoiling your pet doesn't make it happy! Allowing it to be able to communicate with you (in its own language), feel comfortable enough to socialise with other dogs, and be healthy enough to PLAY, like a real dog, will! Knowing that you're responsible and confident, so he doesn't have to be anxious and on guard, all of the time, will! I feel like people who do these kinds of things haven't looked into dog behaviour and training, AT ALL. A dog is not a cat. A dog needs YOU to keep it mentally and physically stimulated, because they've been bred for various types of WORK. They thrive when they're physically and mentally CHALLENGED. We've lived alongside dogs for around 40,000 years, by some estimates. They were our FIRST domesticated animal. They were bred for working alongside us! So spoiling your dog, doing nothing but dressing up and cuddling your dog, doesn't do him any good, whatsoever. He hates his life, because he has no stimulation! He's NEVER challenged! And, often, when dogs are given no stimulation, they start to become anxious, and overreact to ALL stimuli. They often start to destroy your home and belongings, because they're so, so bored. If people want that for their dogs... They're either ignorant or uncaring. I hope it's the former. I wish you luck in convincing them. Instead of talking crap about the dog and their ignorance, which would be my first instinct, perhaps try something like... "I think [dog] would enjoy more mental stimulation. Have you ever considered trying something like puzzle food dispensers, or something? Or even training with verbal or hand commands? I think some mental stimulation would help prevent him from being bored!" "I think it would be good for [dog] to go to the dog park to socialise him! I bet he'd enjoy it, even if it's rocky, at first (may require desensitisation training. I just think of it like, that I wouldn't like only ever seeing members of a different species (or, if they have another dog, ...and that I also wouldn't like only ever seeing the same dog, always). Dogs are social creatures, so I think he'd enjoy meeting stranger dogs, and learning how to interact!" I don't know, fully. But, I think if you start off kind of "attacking" their dog or their ignorance and irresponsibility, they automatically shut you out. So if you REALLY want them to change their behaviour, you may have to find a way to word it so that it comes off as in the dog's interest, or their interest, somehow. It may be a difficult task, but I think it would be worth it! Truly, good luck to you. I'll wish for your success!

  • Having owned dachshunds for 30 years now I so identify with the video. Thankfully the only one I've had this bad was acquired as a foster when he was 15 years old. We ended up keeping him because we feared he would go to an adoption event and bite someone (he was very prone to bite when he didn't get his way). He lived to about 20 and was finally, as my daughter said, domesticated. It wasn't easy. And those spaniels deserve gold stars.

  • These videos are actually helpful for me, someone with a massive phobia. Recently, a German shepherd bolted across the street and jumped up at me. I turned away, gave it a loud 'Ah Ah!' and it stopped jumping. It sniffed me, I told the dog "come, let's go" and lead (led? Sorry, I am Dutch) the dog across the street, back to the owner who clearly had no control over her. Instead of being afraid of the dog, I was angry with the owner. And I felt so proud. Thanks for these videos, they improve my life as well. Dogs seem to be wonderful after all. ... oops, I rambled. Haha. I wanted to share this.
