I've always had faith in Quattro. 4matic behaved the way I predicted but the X-Drive disappointed me. As for the Range Rover, it was comfortable through all the challenges🔥
Guess you missed the part where the the transmission overheated on the Q8 @ 20:25.
It all depends on the wheel base of the vehicle and the contact point to the tyres and the ground. That profile of land was perfect with the wheel base for the range Rover and it just pushed itself off forward.

If you watched the tug pull of G63 vs RR on Carwow, it further gives credence to this video. If only RR can improve reliability of their electronic systems, then they would be ultimate.

Range Rover is arguably the heaviest SUV there and that tells you how impressive it's run was. Very impressive vehicle
Great test. Cross overs are not really "hard off road vehicles" but will probably provide good ability on gravel and light off road. The Jeep is probably the best entry or dividet from cross-over to off-roader and the Range is in a different class.

I've owned Land Rovers, Range Rovers and Land Cruisers. The Land Rover and Land Cruiser are far superior in this terrain than the Range Rover. A Jeep Wrangler would beat all of them in this type of terrain.
It's hard to compare with the different tires, the Range Rover definitely did the best by far. Audi Q8 seemed to do the best of the rest, followed by the Jeep Grand Cherokee and BMW
I have driven Audi's Quattro system in numerous cars for many hundreds of thousands of miles, (guessing 650,000 miles total). Never an issue and always there. In everyday conditions, it's one of the best.
Most are just tall road cars here... The Range Rover is designed for all conditions... A true Swiss Army knife of a car

surprised from audi? really? audi quattro is a legend. And audi suvs showed on comparative tests to be more sporty, agile and comfortable than the competition from mercedes and bmw. Still not as good as land rover in offroad, but way better than the british on road.
The 50i would have faired much better against the range rover better power to weight ratio and more advanced suspension and traction. Speaking from experience My X5 50i w/ BFG k02 has minimal issues overlanding in comparison to underwhelming I6 version.
Best suv is the grand Cherokee hands down, after having owned 6 different suvs the grand is the best period and its not even close

@Martin Svensson the mode it was on was simply a good offroad mode or at least it choose it. So they had the diff locks working which makes this huge difference in climbing with traction loss. My range has that too and its cool that they easily dominate the other ones! they probably dont have lockers.. but the jeep should have one!?

Bouncing does not help when in full articulation and even if commanded the system will not activate because of the great difference in airbag pressure from one side to the other.

I know u were, but people purchasing Audi or Mercedes or Beemers are most likely not off roading, so RR excels in thy area, but I will tell u driving an Audi Q7 other than off road is light years ahead in handling and response and silkiness than the RR, I would have bought a Q7 bit too much money for us

@Martin Svensson Because the people doing the demonstration are not smart enough to put the Jeep in ROCK mode. They intentionally wanted the Jeep to do poorly. That is obvious by the way it was driven. Rock mode or Sand mode would have allowed the engine to spin.

Yes, I own a 17 Audi Q7 3.0T Quattro. I actually purchased it then it snowed in my area days later. It was amazing to see the AWD system working as designed.

Lexus left the contest early and quietly. "I am perfectly fine on highway, only..." LOL
Its not a true 4wd though so nothing less expected. The rear 127bhp electric motor kicks in for performance under acceleration on highway for performance. Trouble is you tubers don't understand this and class it as 4wd which it is not. Goes like stink from a standstill on tarmac though. It was never designed for off road use. It is purely a road going luxury suv and a very good one at that.

Great review! It’s always tough to make apples-to-apples off-road comparisons, but think you nailed it and clearly articulated where the tests differed. I currently drive a Range Rover (albeit the non-sport full size one) and have an X5 on order. I’ve been impressed by the RR’s off-road capabilities but quite honestly don’t do anything besides light snow driving in winter. The 2 things I’ve been especially disappointed with on my RR are reliability (it’s been in the shop 9 times over the past 2 years for unscheduled service… one of which was 32 days waiting for a part) and the fact that it seems poorly planned… In other words: it feels like a lot of high-end parts bolted together rather than a cohesive unit. I hope the newest RR changes these two things (especially with the new BMW engine they plan to use). Though I suspect that with the higher-priced starting price and new Velar-like design, even less RR’s will ever see anything but tarmac. Thank you again for this detailed review!
I think this is the best off-road test I've seen. The Range Rover was clearly in a class of its own and a pleasure to watch how assuredly it tackled this climb. However, for me, it was the Q7 which was the biggest surprise, not least since in looks it doesn't have the same 'off-road styling' of some of the others.

Range Rover (Jaguar Land Rover) are suing (lawsuit) VW / Audi / Group (including Lamborghini & Porsche) for infringement of JLR drive train patents. It would seem that they copied some of JLR knowhow to improve their vehicle off road performance.
I don't get why people are surprised with the Q7. Here in Europe, the Q7 don't play with the diesel 4.2 or even the 3.0 diesel quattro. They don't play.

Range Rover comes from the long LandRover line which have always been the go anywhere vehicle, and I have experienced them in all types of roads/tracks etc around the world. However the BMW's who at one time owned Land Rover were probably the first to provide the SAV, sports activity vehicles, an off road vehicle that were basically a beautiful 5 series car that could go off road, which what it was designed for. (And everyone have copied them since) By never overheating, to me that is a great plus. I would never put Lexus, Volvo etc in this category, but was surprised at Mercedes and also Audi's problems.
Personal opinion I love the jeep but there’s nothing like a RR! Excellent vehicle’s mine have been excellent in all weather’s & where we live, tiny roads & many hillside & motorways etc., fabulous vehicle. Fabulous during wet & snow with hills!

Excellent video. So far, the best ever of this kind. This has been hilarious demo. Also, I am pretty disappointed with almost all SUV, but Range Rover. All those SUV have a lot of power, expensive, pretty over engineered, but almost only for (easy) roads/tracks. H1 and MB G-class seem to do much better.

I have a Q7. I was impressed how well it did. I drove mine up an icy hill that other vehicles couldn't make it up. Was very smooth. 👍🏾👍🏾
David Wilson If that is your statement, you are not a truck/suv person as that has more to do with the tires than anything else. Driving up an icy paved road is something an AWD sports car can do as long as it has snow tires (or Michelin defenders in your case). The competency and strength of an AWD system shows its true colors in low traction/high torque situations. Sand is one of the best ways to test an awd system.

The Audi's Quattro uses a similar haldex clutch pack as the Volvo's awd system.... But it appears the traction controller is far more sophisticated programing!
Q7 uses a true torque vectoring system. Not haldex.

Thanks for watching this video! Perhaps you have a question regarding what you have viewed, but before writing a comment, check out the answers to the most popular questions. Perhaps there is an answer to your question too. Question #1: The drivers are not driving correctly. They don't know how to ride and so on. Drivers deliberately drive as slowly as possible and along a deliberately “wrong” complex trajectory. This allows you to demonstrate the effectiveness of the four-wheel drive system. If you take a good acceleration, then all cars will easily pass this obstacle and you will not notice any difference in their behavior. Question #2: What driving mode is used? Why was off-road mode not turned on? To better understand the difference. At first, all cars drive in the “dummy” mode: the gearbox is just in the Drive position. After the car gets stuck and cannot go further, we activate the available auxiliary mode, most often this is the OFF-ROAD mode. This sequence allows you to form an understanding of how the behavior of the car changes in standard and offroad modes. Question #3: Different tires, so the test is not fair! I completely agree with you. The same tires will add objectivity. But since I do not have a car tire factory, we work with what we have. At the moment, we are checking that the tire pressure corresponds to the factory values (for each car individually). Question #4: Range Rover is not a competitor! You cannot compare SUVs equipped with 5 litre engines to SUVs equipped with 3.0 litre engines. I intentionally added a Range Rover in this video to show you that this obstacle can be overcome. The only question is the technical capabilities of the car. Question #5: Why is there no Land Cruiser / G-Class / Lexus GX & LX / Jeep Wrangler etc. in this video? SUV Battle like your video, fair assessment .... Learned a few things: traction control and wheel slipping responsiveness, need enough power to drive off with one wheel w traction on steep slop, and those four wheel drives are designed/engineered very differently. 👍👍

I’ve been driving a late 2014 Range Rover Sport 4.4 since 2015 and it has been magnificent. Last week I traded it in for a 67plate RR Vogue, pure go-anywhere luxury. The trade-in offer from the dealer for the Sport was incredibly generous being £5,000 more than they offered me last year! So this video has made me rather happy
Hi. Hubby and his friends have Range Rovers. I drive a Jaguar F-Pace (diesel). I came to this video wondering if they’d include a Jag SUV. Oh well. Anyway, with this crazy times, I’m happy with the diesel as I’m getting 40 mpg (I’m in the U.S.). Take care & enjoy your new truck!
