Thoughts I have regarding community reception to the newest Minecraft April Fools' snapshot.

I'm a software developer. Not a game developer, but I do make software that is used by a fair number of people. I can't always add every feature that gets requested by users of the software I develop. I won't add every feature that gets requested because some of them might break things in unintended ways or don't make sense. I get it from Mojang's point of view. They're the same way, they can't add everything that the community wants. They need to keep things balanced and making sense, and this takes a bit of time. But the problem is that the updates we do get are so few and far between it feels like there's one or two people working on Minecraft at a time despite having a large development team behind it. We wait years for tiny features to get added instead of getting updates with any sort of regularity. We get three new mobs teased with each update, one gets added and the rest of them are just forgotten. We still have the useless fletching table that was promised a use later down the line and we still don't have a use. We want things that reward the long-term players, the people that want to play more than one weekend per year when the updates drop. The problem isn't that Mojang doesn't listen to the community, they actively ignore it. An update to make the end less tedious as just "a way to get an elytra and some shulker boxes" wouldn't push people away from creativity, it would allow for more exploration. Adding new structures wouldn't make people less creative, it would offer more opportunity to explore instead of building all the farms that you want in your base and then never leaving.

This is a great take and honestly really tough to defend against. I think Mojang are just insanely, insanley careful in their update planning. So much so that the frequency of their updates causes unrest in the community, like you're describing. There are people who just want content for content's sake, then there are people (like yourself) who see parts of the game that they really want updated. It is completely understandable that one update per year will not be enough to satisfy the long-term players, as the part of the game they want changed will likely not be included. Unfortunately Mojang's development style does not cater towards you guys in any way. Personally, I think this keeps Minecraft itself a high-quality, balanced game. However it seems like most of the community disagrees. I hope that 1.21 and future updates add more of what you and the people are asking for.

Great video! Minor suggestion: maybe avoid having a slight blur effect on the screen as the only thing to look at for extended periods of time. It begins to hurt the eyes a little bit when everything feels out of focus. Having a blurred background is more than fine like at 1:09 though. Otherwise great video :> I hope your channel grows!

I can’t even imagine being Notch. There are so many requests from the community and they send death threats when their ideas don’t get implemented. Lmao. Agnes is the scapegoat now though because she’s a face behind most of the updates

The potato update is easily be integrated into Java minecraft it is because of bedrock edition that's holding back the Java development

I don’t think this is true. Minecraft is developed by the main team at Mojang and written in Java. Bedrock edition is developed by a different team at Mojang who use C++. We’ve even seen updates (like 1.20) come out first for Java edition then later for Bedrock, so it doesn’t seem like Bedrock development is holding back Java update releases in anyway.

Also, that’s the point! The potato update can very easily be added to the game. However, the update was added without any of the careful consideration and planning that goes into a regular Minecraft update. The potato update is very buggy (missing names, crashing if you try to go to the end) which shows that if Mojang haphazardly added features to Minecraft, it would not be good for the performance of the game.

While this is probably true, it is important not to generalize a group of people. Regardless of what they know about game design, they chose to complain on the internet. And what do they get for it? Mocked in the best april fools prank ever. 😎such a baller move from Mojang

I agree that they have to consider every single item and update to balance the game but that is no excuse really for blocks like the fletching table still having no uses. I still think that the community as a whole expects too much from the mojang devs but rounding off existing rough edges isn't too much to ask imo.

I definitely agree, especially with blocks like the fletching table. It’s criminal that it doesn’t have a use yet tbh. I think Mojang are slowly rounding out the existing features, it’s just taking a looooong time. For example in 1.20 they added the camel which adds more to the existing desert village, and the suspicious sand & gravel which adds more to the ruined structures and existing archeology. As evident by the backlash, these features are obviously not exciting enough for the community

I think Mojang develops minecraft slower than most video game companies develop their own games, but there are multiple good reasons why. One main reason I think is because the Mojang devs are not always under crunch time, and aren't always pressured to work to death. Games like Fortnite have had horror stories come out that go over how so many devs worked overtime and sacrificed their happiness, health and family time to develop it.

I agree! Mojang develops Minecraft at a slow and steady pace. Creativity is an integral part of the game, and it’s important that updates don’t change that. Having a developer team full of stressed programmers meeting deadlines is not a good recipe for uniqueness and creativity.

I mostly agree. However I do disagree with the boss discussion at the end. You can have more optional bosses. We have an entire dimension made for a boss and overpowered loot

Definitely true, however I think most people just want more bosses for the sake of more content. I would love to see a new boss that integrates itself into the game well tho.
