It's complicated. Electrical System in a Pull-Out Bed | Van Conversion Part 2
In part 2 of my van build series I design and build a sofa that pulls out into a bed, and then install a solar powered off-grid electrical system into it. I really should have split this up into 2 separate videos because it’s going to be a nightmare for SEO now. Oh well, guess that’s on me for making big claims at the end of the last video. This time you’ll notice I kept my big mouth shut about what’s coming next. Because there’s soooo much more to do…. I really underestimated this project.

Thanks for the kind words mate! yeah those short leads were a real pain to get right, they had to be the perfect length because there was no flex in them, the longer ones you could at least bend a little if they didn't quite reach.

This video is all around amazing. From the content/furniture design to the filming/editing style. Much respect! We have a pullout bed design with built-in drawers as well. We wanted to be able to keep our drawers latched in while having the sofa in bed mode so our design is a little different, but there are definitely perks to both. Yours is so clean looking! We also used that little weight distribution trick on a pullout drawer for our composting toilet. We were worried about barring all that weight on drawer slides so the plywood door helps support the drawer when the toilet is in use as well. Love your content, keep killin it!!!

Loving this. Go for like twice as much storage as you think you need. I'd say get another battery as soon as you can. Way better having more that you need. That way you never stress about running out and your batteries last longer because you are never running then flat. I've underestimated my systems twice now so won't make that mistake again.

These two episodes have been awesome! Btw, the 3D printer really needs 12/24V. By converting the alternator/solar power to mains AC and then back to DC from what was a DC source to begin with just wastes a lot of power since they all have some efficiency drop at each stage.

Great to see the best van build I've seen is homegrown, doing exact same van on Kapiti coast, got in the maxair fan,diesel heater, plumbing but have hit a bit of a wall with electrical, bought the ctek dc to dc charger to get over smart alternator problem and do solar, should keep going down this path, I see you used other brands? Great build man! One small electrical thing, it doesn't matter if the solar panels are connected in series or parallel, they still would give you 400 watts ;)

Great Job Mate! Please watch out witch your electrical wiring. Your main positive and negative poles werent isolated. Maybe think about so covering, so you don’t get zapped when working there. Stay healthy and safe!

amazing work as always !!! i know your not an electrician but plz strap down that battery !!and those solar panels need some vibration insolation !!! i know the panels look sturdy but they are fragile in the middle of the panel and when you are moving in the van and going over bumps and stuff it can damage them ... plz consider mounting them on some kind of rubber bung or something !!! the cheapest way i can think of is rubber from an old inner tube of a bicycle tire ,, you can cut strips to put under the mounting of the solar panels also under the battery since its heavy and will rattle around when going over bumps !!
Thanks! and thanks for looking out for me! not to worry though, I didn't forget, all the electronics and battery etc will be properly secured down later. I'd left them loose because I need to take it all back out again for painting the plywood. The roof rails and solar panel frame do have rubber isolators sandwiched between the fastening hardware but perhaps a foam wedge under the very center of the panels for extra support could be a good idea as well.

In an ideal world you would have more PV wattage especially for cloudy days when output falls. Roof space is limited but some people install pull out panels to one or other side - adds a lot of weight on roof. Interesting option from Tech Ingredients channel using pull out thin Aluminium reflectors that are 20% of the weight and cost of PV panels but will help restore output of existing panels to a claimed 400% of current cloudy-day output. Not a good idea to use on sunny days as you don't want existing panels to get too hot.

I highly recommend that you securely fasten the battery to the metal body of the car. If there is an accident, he will break the vaner and go on a free flight through the car. He needs a metal mount to the car body.

Love the videos and your build! My main question is regarding the Lynx distributor… Is that just a gathering of fuses going to the battery, or does it have some sort of intelligence going in it? The spec in the product page suggests it’s a few fuses with LEDs to indicate if they’re blown or what… I’m my setup I’m only charging via the alternator with a “smart” battery isolator for boat application, but I’m considering investing in solar soon, do you think it’s worth to add a distributor or just having fuses wired up to the battery should do it?
