    • If you do this, have a professional do it. Not only will they be able to tell if you can do it (i. e. Will the oak trees survive the transplant) they will make sure they get enough of the root-ball and dealing with the roots of that massive evergreen will be.... "difficult" to put it mildly.

  • The massive evergreen tree is almost a landmark in its own right, yes??? The bramble clean-out and trunk trimming has elevated this part of the lawn. I would transplant the oaks to a more suitable area of your choice, keep the under-tree area nicely groomed, and perhaps create an outdoor picnic spot under those lovely branches. What a treat for children and the young-at-heart!!! Congratulations on the wonderful progress and new friendships.

    • The oaks are definitely small enough to transplant. If transplanted the oaks will need to be watered regularly for awhile and staked for a couple years so they grow straight. The evergreen is a beautiful tree.

    • Definitely agree with this, they'll start to shade out that spruce and it will lose its perfect shape. Oaks are sometimes hard to transplant (tap root), but I'd rather risk moving them than let them shade out such a beautiful specimen tree.

  • TIP for saving the oak trees. Dig around the oak trees (+/- 1 meter around the trunk/stam and 1 meter deep) but leave the trees were they are, just cut the roots that are spreading wide. Leave them so they can use all their energy this spring and summer making compact root ball. And next fall you dig them out and replant them were you see fit. It's best to replant trees in oktober. If you don't cut their roots now, they sadly have a slim change surviving. This is how arborists do it. I've learned this from them. Lot's of love from the Netherlands, Daniëlle 😘🙋

  • I know blackberries and brambles aren't any fun to pull out, but I still love them anyway. They're a forest edge plant, and they create the perfect shelter for seedling trees to grow into saplings. You wouldn't have those 8 oak trees growing if it hadn't been for the thorns creating a space for squirrels to cache the acorns and a safe place for the seedlings to grow unmolested by deer. So as unfriendly as those thorns are, they're the reason you have 8 free healthy oaks. Besides, blackberries are tasty.

      @MattCasters@MattCasters2 жыл бұрын
    • Absolutely right on both accounts. It’s really important to burn those hard to destroy bramble cuttings while you can as it takes no time at all for them to grow where you piled them, perfect conditions for another mound of soul destroying labour. The Christmas tree is such a great statement, just get the roots out quickly whilst you can and keep a close eye on them, a job for Nathan if he weren’t so busy making lovely food. On the other hand when the roots are gone he can wiz around under the Christmas tree on the mower every time. I think it’s a great job done. • Ask for a forester to do an evaluation of the christmas tree, they can tell if the tree is at risk of falling, if it is healthy or starting to rot, so it is not a risk for the surrounding buildings or the street if there is another storm. Sometimes a tree seems ok, but inside has a lot of damage, or fungus, or it is starting to die. A tree this big next to the old shed is really risky for the building. Good luck! • What some may not know is that oak trees take a very, very, very long time to grow. From the acorn, it first grows the root. The 2nd year, it shoots out 3 leaves on a stem of 3-5 inches tall. The following year (this is now year 3), it still only has 3 leaves, but the stem grows another 6 inches. Meanwhile, below the surface of the earth, the root has grown by 39 inches in year 2 and year 3, added another 24 inches.....you are now faced with a 5.25 feet long root and only 9 inch tall tree sapling. Now, what's your decision on those oak trees that look to be 12 t0 15 feet tall?. Their height is 3x the length of the roots! Now if we turn to the "Christmas tree", that is another issue. The feeder roots are at the 'drip edge" of the tips of the branches - only about 3 feet from the tips - all around. The root ball is about 1/3 of the height of the tree. A very strong wind might just topple it over. What is keeping it solidly anchored to the earth are those Oak tree roots. Now what is your decision? As an arborist and perennial consultant of over 30 years, my decision would be to transplant the shorter oak trees - those under 3 feet - and keep as much of the soil and root ball as possible, cut back the taller ones if you don't want them there but be forewarned that lifting the smaller oak saplings will take a good and sharp excavator shovel and there is no guarantee that they will survive in another area of the property. But you can try. On the other hand, you could try unearthing the smaller oaks, leave the tall ones in place as their coloring in all seasons change and would be wonderful contrast against the plumes of the pine. Whatever your decision, keep in mind that pine trees don't like being moved or their roots disturbed. Once they are, it invites rot, disease and can kill a tree within 10 years.

The 40 year old tree is beautiful & healthy don't mess with it. You've already been planting Camellias on your grounds. Think about making the big tree a feature with Rhododendrons, Azaleas and/or Camellias planted just outside the drip line of the big tree creating a lovely flowering garden...

I want to tell you that the pine tree is so grateful to you for clearing it and allowing it to feel the sunrise on its trunk. It loves that feeling of the golden sunlight in the morning and the pinkness of sunset. I know this because I live across the street from a little pine woods and I see how they react to the light. They almost sing in the morning and love it when their bark turns pink in the light at sunset.

They are messy tho', as you no doubt know, and their leaves don't compost well so you're buying into years of leaf clean-up. BUT - oak! And they're majestic. I'd send you a photo of the 200+yo tree in front of our lakeside home if I could - just to inspire you. Oaks are legacy trees. And you probably also know that they do NOT transplant easily - their tap root goes too deep and you have to get it all. That's one of the reasons they're so expensive to buy at nurseries. I say stick with the copse of oaks. BTW, what wonderful volunteers you have. Betty is a treasure.

Also be careful about exposing them to light. If you ever want to display them, display a copy because light causes them to deteriorate much faster. :)

  • Keep the "Christmas tree" for historical purposes. It appears to require a bit more pruning/trimming with equipment. However, every property needs a landmark. If you can move the oaks, that would be ideal. What progress! What a marvelous group of volunteers.

  • Please keep the Christmas tree, it's a shame to cut it down, such a beautiful tree. It must be a relief for it as well after the brambles were cleared. The oak trees can always be moved to another site with the help of a tree surgeon. BTW, any chance that we might be able to read through those ancient documents after they have all been digitised? It would be great with translation/ bit of explanation but I personally don't mind just looking at them and admiring how people write and what their seal stamps look like in the past. And a great shout out to the volunteers, you guys are amazing and did an amazing job! Philipp should give a medal to each one of you :)

  • Wonderful episode!! Hard working volunteers. Think the Christmas tree would be amazing at Christmas; with light on it across from the church. I believe you can dig up and ball the roots of the smaller ones and transplant them somewhere else on the property. How wonderful that the historical paperwork is being documented and preserved. What great help ever one was.. Just wish Phillip was a little nice to them? LoL LOVE you guy's! ❤ Excited to see the progress on the kitchen.

  • Keep the large Christmas Tree!! We have a Cedar Deodara in our front yard...higher than our 2 story house...and it protects us from the busy street out front. It gives us privacy, softens the noise of the traffic in our busy little suburb. I love it...Even the City Arborist called it a "Heritage Tree"...and it is. It takes too much time to grow these trees....a lifetime!

    • Its not a cedar it's a spruce its roots are shallow and when it dies in their life time itll make a wreck.

  • I would leave the Christmas tree where it is. Way too beautiful to remove, but carefully dig out the oak trees and plant them somewhere else. The volunteers were very hard workers and seemed to enjoy working together and teasing around with you. I love the old documents. What a treasure to have them, and to discover the information written on the pages once they are translated. So very exciting. xx

  • If you decide to keep the ‘christmas’ tree and move the oaks as many suggest in the comments, just don’t get your hopes too high on them surviving the move. Oaks tend to be pretty finicky about transplanting and those seem to be quite established where they are. I would only suggest moving the oaks that you think are less than a year or so old, if any are, and simply cutting down the rest to save yourself some digging. If you prefer oaks in general, then best bet would be to knock down the large tree and thin the oaks to an appropriate distance apart for their adult size. Naturally seeded and established oaks will be stronger and healthier than transplanted ones, though transplants that survive may catch up with time. Really, rather than doing what seems like the ‘right’ thing in terms of our instinct not to cut down the large trees we have, you should do what will make you appreciate your garden. If you personally prefer oaks over conifers, then keep the oaks, or vice versa if not. I think the conifer looks a little silly and out of place, but at the end of the day it’s down to personal taste. There’s also underplanting and landscaping that can contribute to the conifer blending in or fitting better with its surroundings.

  • That Christmas tree is a testament to just how big a tree can grow when nothing else is around it. I have one of those I also used as a Christmas tree...it's a Douglas Fir...in 1995, it's huge but nothing like yours. Mine isn't in a nice wide open space, whoever picked that spot, did so with forethought of seeing that tree grow to it's potential. Phillip I hope you're idea was to never cut it down. If you ever get the bramble roots gone, it would be lovely to see Hellebore flowers blooming underneath. Your volunteers have done an excellent job helping out.

  • The vines around the tree are gorgeous, please leave them. I loved that there is that little secluded area under the tree itself at the beginning. A tree that big is something to value and I believe it has made itself into an important part of the chateau. Look into transplanting the oaks to somewhere they can thrive! I am so happy with the professionalism you are showing in regards to the old paper work, it makes my little historian heart happy.
