So yes the habit is to keep all the wire and burlap on but that is a lazy gardeners way of doing things. How long do you think that metal will take to rust away? And the burlap, at least 3 to 4 years. It is sprayed with a retardant to keep it from rotting. I have 30 years as a journeyman landscaper gardener and have seen trees thrive where the wire baskets and burlap have been removed and trees limp along because they were left. I once asked a landscape contractor why they left it all in and he said it was easier to remove the tree when it died. ☹
Of course the tree died, with the wire and burlap preventing it from growing properly.
ALWAYS remove burlap & twine from around root ball of trees & shrub. Nurseries tell you it's OK to leave them however years later we find trees & shrubs that were left this way have been strangled by their own roots. The roots begin growing in a circular pattern and never grow outwards. If the roots have already started girdling, make shallow vertical cuts up the root ball to encourage outward growth. ❤️🙏
This actually happened to me. We bought a four year old house that had 8 very expensive trees planted into its landscape. All the trees looked vigorous and strong. By the time ten years had passed, seven out of eight had died, and every time we dug out the dead roots we found the wire basket - rusted a bit but not gone - girdling the roots severely within it.
Yes! I watch another gardening show and they lost a gorgeous 30 year old blue spruce to a windstorm! When they looked at the rootball, it was very small because it had been planted with the metal wires still on. Always free the roots!
I'm just curious, does that happen with every material? Because in the video, the guy from the nursery said it's bio-degradable.
@@moongirl8807 Bio degradable is a comfort word for people. It could take tens to hundreds of years to degrade depending on the materials. The roots are growing long before the degradation process begins so trees & shrubs often die. We've seen this so often...it's a shame nurseries are still spreading this misnomer. ❤️🙏

Seriously...remove the cover and the wire. We just saw a 30yr old Spruce fall over and that stuff was still wrapped around the root ball.
The biggest cliffhanger of this episode is did Philip realize he needed to remove the burlap and wire, so he removed the trees and planted them again? I really hope so.

You SHOULD take the wire cage off the trees. You can get girdling roots. The cages will not rust away. Watch GARDEN ANSWER on KZhead. They had a huge pine that was there for 30 years fall over in a wind storm and it was because the roots weren’t able to reach out beyond the cage. She shows it and the arborist talks about it. I’ve had the same with maple trees that home builder planted and it got girdling roots as well and died.

As commented below, you have to remove those wire baskets. It’s a pain but you ll be glad in years to come 😀 getting roots established and not restricted is always the rule of any plant!

Now that spring is coming, I am sure that you will have a lot of wild garlic in the châteaus garden! There is an Austrian dish which is called „Bärlauchschlutzkrapfen“, its basically ravioli stuffed with wild garlic. It‘s amazing, I am sure you would like it! You could ask Philipps mother if she has a recipe, but i would be glad to forward one if she doesn’t have one. I’m so happy with how the château is coming along! Great work!

@@essliedavis wild garlic isn't the same thing as garlic bulbs. It's a green also called ramsons or bear's garlic
@@essliedavis Im glad that you two would like the recipe, but @s.girl is right.. Wild garlic is used for its leaves and is a lot milder in taste. I dont think that the recipe would work as well with garlic bulbs, you surely would have to experiment with the amounts of garlic you cant put in there :)

Love that you’re planting trees replacing those lost to storms on your grounds. Doing so, planting trees, is really a gift to our future generations to enjoy and benefit from. The gardener is rarely fortunate to live long enough to witness the magnificence of their handy work achieve its full potential. If you have a gorgeous mature tree/s in your garden, take a moment to think of the kind soul who planted it for you all those years ago.

It will take years for the wire webbing to rust away.. if you cut it now and loosen the roots the tree will grow faster and healthier.. love linden trees.. you will have to sit on the bench to benefit from the aroma!
I have an old, old Linden in my yard. Lovely aroma with tiny, ivory flowers.
Nathan is brilliant, how he manages to keep a straight face is classic. Unless you do a lot of editing..... good fun.

I love the smell of blooming Linden trees! For anyone that would want one; definitely plant them away from your house and cars. The bees love thier sticky nectar, but your house and cars will need to be washed off in the spring to early summer.
Another piece of advice: make sure not to get those hybrids that smell forever even though they have no nectar anymore. Hundreds of bees and bumblebees fly there and die from exhaustion. It always looks like a battlefield underneath, it’s so sad. (And dangerous when walking barefoot, most still sting when stepped on)

Here's a tip. When digging a hole to plant a tree, get a plastic tarp to put the dirt on so it doesn't get all clogged up in the grass. Makes it much easier to clean up after. I also agree with all the comments that say it is always best to remove the wire and cloth from plants when planting them. That stuff takes years to decompose, and that will stunt the trees roots from growing outward for that amount of time.
Yes, watch Garden Answers and see when the massive tree fell down because it still had the wire around the roots

From all the gardening KZhead blogs I watch everyone says to remove the wire. It inhabits the roots. The only thing that should be buried is the rootball.
Phillip saying I’m cutting it down, but not too much, is the first sign of trouble. Where did it go?
Just a note. While the wire and burlap ARE biodegradable you will often have issues where the roots don’t go as deep down and end up the tree can get uprooted by a heavy wind. Happened with one of my trees. The previous owners 50 years ago planted a pine tree in the basket and this past summer it fell over in a storm. The whole basket and burlap was still there all those years later
ALWAYS REMOVE BURLAP, STRING, AND ESPECIALLY WIRE. Wire does not decompose and it stumps the roots, endangering the tree long term.

@@rachelarroyo6050 - exactly! There’s a video where Laura (Garden Answer) talks and has a video about when they had a beloved spruce tree falls during a wind storm. They later find that the spruce tree’s root ball still had wire on it and prevented the roots to grow deeper into the soil. It was the cause of its demise.

Good luck with the trees, if you don’t cut the wire and the wrap, they will not thrive. I have 74 years of experience and I am a Master Gardener.

Loved the new music this week, especially the song after the French lesson 🤣🤣 About the puppy.... since you picked it up in Germany, my three guesses are: Weimeraner, German Shepherd, and Rottweiler. For anyone who is questioning my Rottweiler guess, I grew up with Rottweilers, and they are wonderful family dogs if they are trained properly. Have a blessed week, everyone! 😁💜🙏
I think maybe a German shepherd they make brilliant family pets and well as guarding the home.
Rottweiler & Pitt Bulls are the biggest babies & so love able. I used to fear them, until my daughter got one. It’s all in how they are raised.

I agree with the people who have said so already. Whatever the nursery people say it is always best to take off the rootball net. Listen to people who have first hand experience. A nursery's job is to sell you plants, not to necessarily give you the right advice on how to maintain and keep your plants healthy in the long run. I'd say smaller trees with a wide fibrous root system might do ok, but most trees develop a variation of root sizes, and a lot of them are big ones to anchor the tree to the ground. Any delay or obstacles to these roots will thoroughly lower the tree's ability to stabilise and anchor itself. Another tip; newly planted trees and shrubs need to be watered and taken extra care of for the first 1 to 2 years because of the small root ball, especially during the summer months, but also during any dry spells in spring or autumn.

I totally get the excitement about the new trees! :) I just really hope you watered the new trees extensively after planting! It crucial to give them loads (and I really mean loads) of water so they can overcome the stress of transplanting and adapting to the new location! You can make a "Gießrand" around the tree (I'm a german landscape architect and unfortunately don't know the english word for it) so that the water can slowly sink into the ground around the tree :)
And remove the wire and burlap… dig them all up again and do it! You will appreciate the effort!

@@nicolethijs5428 You certainly can, but it's way better to get them off! We needed to remove a tree after 15 years of beeing planted. We had left the net arround the roots 15 years ago, being said that it doesn't matter. When the tree got out of the soil it was very visible that the roots had been concentrated like a giant ball in the net, very few had spread into the soil outside. So for all trees I will plant in the future, I will take the time to rip these wires of, it will develope a better and wider root system way faster, and will be more stable.
Well I am also of the opinion that you should remove or at least loosen it before filling in but who am I? I am just a housewife. Its the professionals that say leave it!

Philipp you have a unique sense of humor and adding Nathan’s dry humor you make me laugh always. I have always removed the wire and burlap to give the toots a chance to grow out. The grounds are looking beautiful and in a few years you will have color year round. What a teaser at the end but seeing the girls in the window waiting with excitement was precious. Can’t wait to see puppy romp around the chateau and property. Hugs xx

Interpretive tree dancing is a new one to me.
Just fyi, Garden Answers had a tree fall this past fall that the wire wasn’t removed and it was still there on it as it exposed its roots. The arborist that treated the cleanup, said that it is very common to see them left on and the6 actually choke the root ball not allowing it to expand out and have a stable foundation for the adult tree to stand. I would remove the wire covering the root ball. Hugs and love from Texas!
Your garden is looking beautiful and no doubt as the spring and summer arrive the plantings will come alive, adding even more sublime texture into your extensive garden. I've planted the trees with the red bark myself and hope you know they grow really fast and bushy and fairly tall as well. Their bark is beautiful in winter especially if you get snow, they look amazing and dramatic against the snow and if you choose to up-light them from the bottom showcasing the bark all year round, you won't be disappointed.

@@purpurina5663 I believe the type of tree Phillip bought was a Coral Bark Japanese Maple or what I thought was a Red Bark Dogwood but I didn't get a close up view of it, however The Red Bark Dogwood looks just like the tree he had selected. except the Coral Bark Japanese Maple doesn't grow fast at all. Either way red bark light up at night against white snow is beautiful
One word - tease. Can’t wait to see you puppy & the girl’s reaction. Great job in the garden Philipp but it does make sense to cut off wire. That’s like leaving small, tight shoes on a child not letting the shoe fit their growth.
I have had trees die because the sacs didn’t dissolve quickly enough and it strangled my plants. That’s why people don’t believe landscapers when they say you can keep them on. It’s a gamble and two much of a pain to fix if it doesn’t work out

Great advice trenching around the roots of the oak trees in preparation for moving them later. My husband grows bonsai and that's the process he uses when prepping a tree to remove the following year. 🙂 🌲🌳🎄

I spent the morning in my garden (with my dog) on Vancouver Island in Canada. Your video with all the trees being delivered and planted is perfect timing. As a CRM archaeologist, I would say Nathan’s digging technique is perfect for shovel tests. If he could dig me 25 of those perfectly round holes and sift all the dirt in a day, he’d be hired.

The experts on Garden Answer KZhead channel had a mature tree get uprooted in a storm and the netting did not allow the rooting system to properly anchor the tree. With the weather you guys get at your Chateau you should definitely remove the net/cage from the base of the tree when planting.

I had a customer with a row of 10 beautiful oaks. They were in the perfect location, perfect moisture etc. After 5 years 7 were dead, 2 had one branch still alive and one was alive but had barely grown. I told him, "I am going to dig around the drip lines and I guarantee I will find a wire cage still constricting those roots. I did it, et voila, wire cage. Trees rarely survive and never thrive in a root cage. It is infuriating.
Hate to say it, but don’t take tree planting advice from the guy who will sell you the replacements several years down the road when the warranty is over. Hey, I’m from NYC, it’s how we think.

We just bought a parrotia persica tree too! I had never heard of it until a few days ago, but it’s a fabulous tree for fall colour. Also, I’m rooting for a Labrador Retriever🦮
