thank you for that
Do you think the best way to get high quality photos from a camera to your phone for IG is this?
unable to buy in India
What if we need to use wireless mics like the Dji mics?
Looking at the side-by-side comparison starting at 7 mins mark, I find the Apple log side to be faded vs the regular side. I'm not sure if you labeled it wrong, but the right side looks more vibrant while the left side looks faded.
The log looks gorgeous. I can’t believe Apple hasn’t done a more traditional “Cinema profile” in all these years. Like Cinetone or Eterna. That auto HDR has been plaguing me ever since it came out as well.
Anyone using an Iphone 14 pro max does not need to replace his phone until the 16 series. Bcz in reality there is no such big diff in 14pro max and 15 pro max.. and for zoom videos or photos S22 and S23 Ultra is the best Option..
I feel like it needs a technical LUT or something to get it into the ballpark. I would think an inexperienced person would likely get better results shooting baked in and tweaking from there. That pastel look aint it. Looks not good.
You can turn off HDR and set it to SDR in ProRes. It looks decent
@@revmatchtv Also sounds like there's a LUT available on the apple website.
@@BenEricson Yes, on the Developer website.
I CAN CONFIRM.... I have successfully recorded to a UHS-1 Micro SD Card (not a uhs-2) using ProRes. Here is what I have/did: - iPhone 15 Pro, white, 512GB - SanDisk Extreme Pro 512GB Micro SD card V30 ($52 bucks on Amazon) - UNI SD USB-C Card reader adapter ($12 bucks on Amazon) The iPhone was set to ProRes, LOG, 4k24, main camera. (91 minutes with 512GB micro SD Card) I formatted the card in my MacBook Pro 13" M1 to ExFAT. Popped the card in the reader, plugged the reader into the iPhone and recorded 1 full minute of video. No errors, no stopping. Playback was smooth. CONCLUSION: NO, you do not need an SSD drive. And also, NO you do not need a faster UHS-2 SD Card. As long as you have a fast UHS-1 card, you can do it. NOTE: This will not work with 4k30 or 4k60. If you set your camera to one of those, it WILL record, but your resulting file will end up being some wonky frame rate around 24p'ish. Basically, the iPhone will drop frame rate before it stops recording. So if you need to record 4k30 or 60, you will need a UHS-2 SD Card or an SSD. But 4k24p works just fine using a cheap Micro SD Card UHS-1.
WOW great feedback and thanks for sharing your findings!
How about kingston data traveller max. Its usb3.2 gen 2 and cam write up to 900mb/s
@@95muhdfaizal yes. That would work with all ProRes framerates. However that would be awkwardly dangerous sticking out the bottom of the phone. Be sure to use a 5” extension.
Tyler's footage looks lovely! And ability to shoot 4K@60 in log in a base 128 gig 15Pro is truly great news!
The new base is 256gb
Never mind the pro max base is 256
I was already looking up USB MicroSD adapters to use with iPhone 15 Pro rather than a long cable for an external drive. I really want it to be as minimal as possible. Glad to know you can use SD/MicroSD instead of just a full size drive.
I've noticed that KZheadrs who discuss mobile phone video recording never mention the jittery effect that occurs when panning left to right. It seems that the phone camera's shutter speed may be the culprit. It's frustrating to see video examples that are either in slow motion or completely still like a webcam, as this doesn't accurately represent the normal video experience. It's crazy that phone manufacturers or reviewers aren't being honest about this common issue when promoting new models. Personally, the jittery effect makes me feel dizzy. It would be great if someone could ever address this problem.
Oh yeah totally. It’s a shutter speed issue that can be fixed with Blackmagic camera app or filmic pro. I just used the built in app for this quick example. Unfortunately Apple doesn’t allow for manual shutter speed adjustment.

@@dvdaltizeryesssss, this ^^^
I’ve noticed that sometimes, but it’s far far more noticeable on my Galaxy S23 Ultra. And my Pixel six Pro versus iPhones, my 14 Pro Max and 15 Pro Max now it’s far far less noticeable and much smoother compared to android overall.
I was already excited for the new phone, but seeing how you utilize this new feature and putting it to work, I’m GEEKING OUT!!! Subscribed for more future iPhone content.
Nice insights! Great job putting this together, love how the footage looks! 👏
This was amazing! I love how everyone's immediate thought was SSD, but you're over here like "but what if SD Card?" Interesting to see it work.
I just tested external recording prores log on Samsung T7, using original cable vs samsuung t7 cable. I saw that the iphone original cable will cause frame drop intensively and it took much longer to write to T7 after click stop recording when the usb-c gen 2 cable finishes saving the file to T7 right after I click stop recording without losing any frames. Therefore, using another usb-c cable for iphone pro (max) is the must to utilize its features
Great video! You answered the question I had about recording ProRes with the 128gb version. Could you record regular 4k externally? probably not, just asking. Thanks!
I've seen someone get a magsafe sticker for their ssd and a 3 inch cable and I think that was great
Also worth mentioning that they manage to remove the duplicate ghost thing when there is a direct light in the frame.
Wait… They finally fixed that? 😮
@@AdamLMorewell I did not see it in the video but it absolutely remains in my 13 so I guess is fix now. Looks like Apple fixed it without saying anything about it to avoid recognizing that huge bug in their previous iPhones. Sneaky company lol
@@jotapeoutdoorsthey mentioned it on keynote..they add more coating on lens
@@jotapeoutdoors no it's not fixed, i remember watching couple of reviews that point it out.
@@tienduy12345 It's not "fixed" but it's infinitely better than it was before.
Hopefully this means that someone will make some sleek designed cases that will have the card reader built in.
Vote for this
I could see a Smallrig or Ulanzi accessory cage that could be developed incorporating all of this. I already was eyeing one kit that includes a holder for the SSD drive, but with enough room for the MagSafe battery pack on the back of the phone; as great as the battery life is on an iPhone, it does drain quickly when taking a lot of video.
Hmm, hopefully wired charging & MagSafe cooling! Talk about modular
I think NEEWER PA023 more better then Smallrig and Ulanzi for iPhone 15 Pro. New Smallrig has a problem with a filter adapter.
A grip at the bottom would block the mics. This won’t be an issue if using external ones, something to consider though.
What’s the data rate on these formats? Gotta make sure the media you’re using is up to snuff to handle it. Not sure if Apple uses a buffer when writing to disk, or if dropped frames are a risk.
Wow. I am actually very surprised at how good the colours look while recording in log, it's much better than standard. The only thing is the amount of storage it takes up because of the raw format. The only thing is that some people don't want to upgrade their phone so a cheaper alternative to shoot in raw video is just to use an old digic 5 canon camera with magic lantern.
This is awesome! Cant wait for cases to be made
Apple has decidedly distinguished the pro models from the base iPhones in the iPhone 15 range. There's so much possibility now with the iPhone 15 pro max. A bigger case than can house a portable external SSD and SD card and mic ports plus a small battery bank will really bring out more utility from this powerful smartphone
nothing pro in iphone just fancy name to lure dumb customers will you belive in apple lies nothing powerful in iphone 😂 q17 overheating trotled garbage mess
Something that would be even better is to just get the Sharge Disk M.2 NVMe SSD enclosure that has a USB-C male port. You can hot swap the SSDs and it’s a tiny box that’ll plug directly into the bottom of the phone, no mounting necessary and way faster write speeds than SD cards
Why has no one talked about this device? Everyone is showing the most insane clunky and fail prone setups with these huge cables hanging off the phone.
USB C opens up some good options. I just tried a CFExpress Type B reader and a 512 GB Angelbird card in my iPhone 15 Pro Max and it worked perfectly. People are also using Crucial SSD and have printed holders & interface already out there.
Becca from The Verge noticed that if your medium isn't fast enough, it will fall back to 30 fps without any notification. Probably something to be aware of when recording to an SD card. They might be too slow in some cases. In addition make sure that you have the proper cable.
yes. you need 200mb/s minimum write speed
@@dvdaltizer any recommendations for a card with those speeds?
do i need sd card with v60 or v90only for 4k60?@@dvdaltizer
Stalman's video with the Apple Log clip Post-Processed looks great. I'll probably copy iPhonedo's samsung drive mounting idea (w/ a magsafe sticker on the drive), but the cable system still needs clean up.
Wonder how many things that usb port can do simultaneously. Imagine recording to sd, and also audio out and mic input and hdmi out for monitoring, AND charging at the same time
lol same thing I’m thinking, someone might be able to test this out with a USB C hub with all of these inputs on there.
😮🙂👏 This is definitely a better option for us. We have lots of SD space to spare so keeping the dongle in our kit makes more sense for workflow. Awesome vid!
fantastic! yes totally. just make sure the cards are at least 200mb/s
I just wanted to ask for this, thank you!!! @@dvdaltizer At least 200 then?....
Game changing! When thinking about card readers, think MagSafe attachment to phone or case.
such a simple idea too! Magsafe and usb c are dope af cant wait for new accessories.
Thanks for the lock white balance when recording heads up I have just turned it on on my 12 pro Max and will be doing the same on my 15 pro max when it arrives.
I think those golden sandisk SD mini cards you tried at the end are not fast enough
Probably need a v30 or v60 card.
This video blew up fast! Man this was one thing I was going to test and make a video on and you beat me to it! Nice!! This is awesome!
I've got the same 128gb phone and I've been messing around with the external recording. I put in a usb-c thumb drive with 1TB and could record to it, showing 119 minutes 4k. The read write is slow though. Here's what I noticed. If I record something and unplug too fast I don't get the whole recording, if I wait a while I do get the whole recording, but there is nothing telling you when the data transfer is done. I've ordered the usb-c to sd card reader because I have a bunch of fast sd cards. My plan is to get a spare case and attach the reader to it then tie back the cord, I'm hoping to use it on my osmo gimbal :)
Basically what Im noticing too. The speed at which you can hit record again after you stop will depend on the speeds of the the drive you use. The T5 can stop and start almost instantly, while the slower cards, I will hit stop and then some will take 10 seconds and others 30 seconds, but the native app will be frozen until it saves the video and you are able to hit record again. Depending on the use case and what footage you need that day, you can definitely get away with using the slower storage options, but if you need quick stop and start recording, you need to make sure you get a really fast storage option like the T5.
Dope, thanks for sharing. The handle is a great idea. but dont forget an additional USC-C for power during use 😜👍🏽
Wireless charging case
Was great to see that log removed the sharpened phone look! Pro res is great and all, but those data rates are insane. I would love to see LOG on regular H.265. That would be insanely useful for projects that max quality is not needed but also wont look like it was shot on a phone.
That's what I love about the iPhone 4 4s.I have some exposure control and can increase or decrease it to my liking. There is a reason why a lot of people like shooting with that phone because of the experience. I have the 11 pro and and hate taking pics with it because it does everything and hate the sharpness look.
The h.265 would need to be in bit depths higher than 8 bits to look decent, maybe 10 bits which only takes up a bit extra storage
The graded log footage looks so much better. Which makes me wonder… couldn’t they eventually build a graded log option into the iPhone? I see no reason why you shouldn’t be able to get that look without having to grade it yourself on a computer
Good point! My guess is other apps like filmic pro and the new Blackmagic app will allow for recording LUTs baked into the footage!
Love the video!!!! Keep up the great work!
I want a case that uses the DisplayPort alt mode for a tiny monitor on the back so I can frame up a selfie shot with the rear lenses while recording externally. Side note I was able to record 4k60 ProRes log over usb 2.0 to a spinning disk hard drive. It just locks up when you stop recording while it finishes writing. I wonder if it buffers on the internal storage…?
glue a mirror sticker on the back
Standard footage isn't too bad at all, I wish it could adjust the contrast, saturation and sharpneness. At least sharpeness. Great video! Thx for sharing!
Very nice! I wonder if there is a p&s with the same 48mp 1/1.3 sensor? The dj drone has it too
Thanks for this. One thing I'm not clear on: if you're using the USB port for external recording, how do you use wireless mics? The receiver normally plugs into the lightning/usb port, so how do you get around that?
USB-C hub works great.
Can you let me know if it also will record to a high speed micro SD card? That would make this an even smaller setup if possible. Thanks for the video!
Wow I noticed the default grading looked WAY better on my TV, and checked on my iPhone 15 and they both looked fine but the right side still looked “nicer”. Is it a case of grading to suit the purpose? A “studio” shot or other indoor environment probably doesn’t need or want the full range of reality recreation you get outside - it’s not an impressive location scene. Anyway let me know - if it’s an interesting philosophical point, make a video about it?
I mean... I also ordered an iPhone 15 Pro exactly for those reasons... But it's still funny that recording to an SD Card and USB-C are a feature again... They already have been there years ago... And just were removed so that companies may ask you for way more money than they should.
Nice! How does the iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max balance on something like a DJI Osmo Mobile 6 with the SD card reader hanging off? Would love to see a video around using a gimbal with these SD card / SSD setups.
Good question
Pro max with no accessories is too heavy for OM6
Technically you only need external drive for 4K60p pro res log. 4K30P pro res log can be recorded internally. Glad I got the 1TB internal iphone
Tbh it should let you record 4k60 pro res if you have that much storage
Please make a video showing best camera configurations for i15 pro/ pro Max
You can also use a usb c flash drive, just as convenient and even less wobbly
I used a Samsung 256gb flash drive for $25, works for 4K30 not for ProRes
@@KaioshinAemi doesn't work for prores? I wonder why
Thank you Ashton
Nicely done!
There are models available on Printables to be 3D printed that clip that Samsung SSD onto the back of the iPhone
apple log graded footage looked AMAZING! great definitely buying the card reader for my iphone 15 pro
I’m excited about this too!
At 10:00 I think you need a UHS -II SD card with second row of pins. You used only SD reader with 1 row of pins-slow slow.
Are you able to record directly to external storage in other format like MP4 other than ProRes?
Apple Log looks amazing. Looks like proshot from a DLSR/Film
I use a Kingston SSD high speed thumb drive and it works amazing with ProRes 4k 60 fps
Nice work! Excited to see what else we can plug into these little beasts...
Does it work with non Apple apps? So like the new BlackMagic Camera app? to record to SSD?
the videos are absolutely fantastic!!
That is so awesome to know. I didn’t realize they had a usbc to sd reader writer
Sick hack, thanks for the info.
No problem 👍
Buena solución para el iPhone , en mi caso yo haría algo similar con el Kingston XS2000 SSD porqué pequeño y rápido y lo pegaría con Velcro.
will you please make a video showing how to grade this footage like you did in final cut?
Great tip thanks for this video.
Now imagine if the iPhone had a built in SD card slot. None of this would be necessary 😂
I’m cool with just a micro SD card
They leave it for iphone 16 pro 😂😂 i guess its all on purpose
@@edmalekofficial i got a better idea, sd cards paired to the mainboard
I know close to nothing about photography/videography. For the iphone 15 pro max, would using a usb type c flash drive be the same as this?
I think you'll find that an Extreme Pro Micro SD card will work fine. The EXtreme probably isn't fast enough.
Is there an easy solution for using the one port for the SDCard and having a port for the microphone when using a iPhone camera cage/rig?
You can also buy a type c with no wire to ssd card reader.
thanks for the video! I have an iPhone 15 Pro and in addition to the SSD hard drive I wanted to connect an external RODE mini microphone. What connector do I need? Thank you.
I kinda like the regular 4K straight of the phone 😂😂😂
I have a question. I'm a novice at log use. When shooting in log do you just manually adjust the colors in post or do you use a lut?
This is a fantastic feature for iPhones! Can this also work if you want to shoot standard 4K video directly to a SD card too?
3:23 you know you can unplug the cable with the T5 from the iPhone and plug it straight into your laptop too
Not to mention editing directly from the SSD.
I’m imagining a case that has a m.2 style (2230?) ssd with USB-C that also allows for charging pass through? Somehow, that drive could quickly come out (solutions for this do exist) and be popped into a faster enclosure at the computer to quickly dump the drive. It’ll probably make the most sense to go SD Card due to it being cheaper, smaller, having less heat and more handable than m.2 drives. It is a neat idea to think of though, especially as SSDs get cheaper. You wouldn’t even need to go NVMe over SATA if you didn’t want to. But if you’re recording a lot at once? Just put a PCIe gen5 NVMe SSD in there and record normally while the dump station goes crazy.
In fact, I have some DIY units with Kingston SSDs and an AliExpress case that costs approximately $70 for 1TB.They work very well, I even think it is better since the 10gbps USB gives you a better workflow than an SD for the same price
Can you only copy photos from the phones gallery to these devices or will we finally be able to also move folders from Icloud?
Whats the best option to record on a ssd with a Dji Osmo Mobile ? & also on a straight tripod ?
Thanks, very helpful. Ugh, did my wonderful Shure MV88+ iPhone mic just crash fatally into a Log? Can we rig to record to an external SSD and an external mic? Or must I buy another blasted Zoom F3 with wires and dongles and rig and blah-blah?
Seems like you can record ProRes 4k 24fps in log directly to the phone(at least on the 256gb version). And 24 is what you want for most shots anyways..
can we edit video on iphone apps, when the video file is in the external storage ?
you can use a usb c hub on the Iphone 15 try it, I am using a anker 7 in 1 hub
Great video. Makes me reconsider the 15.
Sandisk makes a similar high speed SD reader, P/N SDDR-409-G46: Extreme PRO SD Card USB-C Reader
Is the ProRes Log still variable frame rate? That's been the case for every type of video iPhones have been shooting.
Cool, thanks!
Have you seen Philp Bloom's new video on the new smaller Crucial x9 and x10 drives? Hopefully someone will make a holder for that.
Thanks! At a glance the X9 (and x10) appear much more economical than SD cards. I don’t own any SD cards… and X9 transfer speeds will be fine for me. Now I just need a 15…
This is revolutionary
Does anyone know of a solution that allows you to record apple log video straight to an ssd whilst also recording audio from something like the DJI mic straight into the phone at the same time!? Been trying to find usb c splitter cables that would work, but seems as though they wouldn’t both be able to handle the data at the same time
would you be able to chrage and use the T5/7 at the same time over the usb port?
I shot log on the base model iphone 13, using the moment app, and it looks just as good imo. All the shots are static, but i think it came out great. It's in a shorts clip on my channel if anyone is interested!
you can mount it with mag safe adhesive glued to the samsung t7 and a 90 degree short usb-c cable
Hey Dave, is the cord you used (for the SSD) a USB 3.2 male to USB-c male? Do you mind providing a link to trustworthy cable? I really appreciate you making this video. Thank you! - Paul
any manufacturer found already offering such a iPhone 15 pro max case he mentioned in his video? with a built in card reader, microphone input jack, headphone jack, maybe even a full sized HDMI jack ???
i'm sure somebody else has mentioned it but it looks like the microSD card was the slowest speed kind not extreme pro or uhs II, I'm thinking that it would work with the right card capability!
Yes! Make sure it's 200MB/S at least
Had no idea about the LOG feature which is actually SICK!
So the 14 PM doesn’t have this camera quality? I decided to just keep the 14 PM after getting it a week or so before the 15 came out. Didn’t seem like a huge change so I’d decided to keep it but maybe I should’ve exchanged it
What the heck?! I read that the iPhone 15 Pro’s USB-C power output was too little for external SSDs to function, but that’s not true? Do you have any other external SSDs or HDDs even that work? I’d love to know as I currently have to use one of those dongles and have to be connected to power.. 🥴
Thank you so much you just save me so much money now I can use 4k and log with a mini sd card I had laying around instead of buying a ssd
I’m liking my SanDisk iXpand Luxe for the iPhone. Easy to clip on a keychain. USB C flash drive is my favorite method right now. Hope this helps someone. 👍
Can you do this on older iPhones?
I am planning to convert one of the "Mac USB C" dongles to a camera rig with 3d printing, let me know what inputs you would like it to include?
I have a few small Samsung SSD thumb drives with TypeC and the bandwidth is supposed to be 400MB/s, I have no iPhone 15 to test, but I think is the solution... blue in color and very very small and I have two 256G and two 128G, big enough to handle long take... smaller than SD
