I needed this! As you pointed out, the cages and gear are a bit much for someone who's a hobbyist or casual filmmaker. For instance, I have an upcoming vacation for a week in wine country, and want to take as much video as I can, but I also want to *use* my phone as well! I already have the Sherpa gear, and putting together this little kit wouldn't take a lot of effort. This was a godsend, and thank you so much for sharing!

Great video. I went from iPhone 12 Pro to a 15 Pro Max, and the difference in the quality of the video is tremendous. Now, I have to say the option to record the files externally from the phone itself is a plus. Nothing else really makes a big difference because you can use apps to do most of the stuff.

One of the better finds for a small hard drive. Wish someone would make a "handle" like the polar pro handle that has an SSD built into it. Even if it was just like 256 or 500gb.
I just wonder if the read and write speed will be fast enough!

Great stuff! Love that SSD setup. My only addition would be that by using various USB splitters you can also run auxiliary power and an external mic. It will make the rig a bit bigger, but having lots of power and avoiding the need to sync audio in post may be helpful to some users.

I splurged out for the 500gb 15Pro Max so I didnt have any cable issues plus the Brand Lei cage with twin-grips. Apart from the small form factor, rhe speed you can frame shots is extremely rapid plus the prores and proraw quality is outstanding.

This is cool and all but really that practical compared to carrying around a DJI Pocket 3. 4K 60FPS shot in Log on a mechanical gimbal that could fit in a big pocket. I purchased the iPhone 15 Pro for my property videos because it has the largest wide-angle lens on the market right now. I pair it with my Insta360 Flow and Rodecaster Mic Pro for great audio and video. I have the DJI Pocket 3 for every other type of video I'm interested in capturing on the go. Thanks for the video. It was interesting to see different ways to tackle these problems.
Personally I think the Pro Res image coming from the Iphone is better than the DJI Pocket 3 in terms of latitude of colour adjustment in post. Also Your phone is always in your pocket the DJI Pocket 3 is an extra thing to have in your pocket. But if your system works for you, more power to you.
It would be great if you did a masterclass on how to film thing or make a story as I have no idea on how to go about. I just go out and try to make a story. What do we do 1st and types of shot for their reason for being use of why we use a low shot or high overhead shot.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of using the small NVME SSD and enclosure. I had been doing something exactly the same using both thumb drives for iPhone 13 and a Crucial X9 pro / X10 pro SSDs with a MagSafe wallet. Having a compact iPhone setup in your pocket yields a lot of good B roll shots for me when I least expect it. I also use the Hohen M6 and the one LUT. Having the BMC app also generate proxy files for ProRes is a big benefit when I bring everything into Resolve. So much power and technology at our disposal these days. The whole landscape for the little guy film maker has changed drastically the last few years.

@@thesavagefilmmaker I got mine with a budget Silicone Power 2230 NVME and it scored a Write of 953Mbs and Read of 891Mbs on the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test on my MI MacBook 14" pro. Roughly the same speed as my Crucial X9 Pro and half or more of the size. A mighty mini is the way to go!

@@domeskeetz OK yes it is. Just in case you have doubts I ran some speed tests using my MacBook 14" Pro and the Blackmagic disk speed check. The Samsung T7 was 791Mbs Write and 595Mbs Read, The Crucial X9 was 964Mbs Write and 911Mbs read, and the NVME 2230 (I got a cheap SP one

Great vid, have you tried the free well hand grip with that ssd? Looks like it could almost fit with out getting in the way.
I didn't but, I did consider it, I just think that you really want to place it right where the SSD is. So it would be slightly awkward placed next to the SSD. However it would still work well for Selfies and placing it on a tripod.

I prefer using a mic and ssd on a hub. There is a HUGE difference between a tiny iPhone cage and an fx3 rigged up. I got the neewer cage, and a K&F VND, and I can use the cold shoes to put mic and ssd, and it’s a tiny bit bigger, but the beauty of the cage is you slide your phone in when you want to film and out when you are done. I am looking at using the 180 degree adapter for the hub, then another for the ssd.
Great setup, but I still prefer not having to go through the extra step of adding a cage.
Great presentation. I share your concerns about converting the slim sleek i phone into an octopus with all the attachments. After years of lugging a 100 pound back pack in the Army, I can appreciate a rig that is simplistic, light and less cumbersome while on the go. My only question to you is Where do I purchase thermal paste for the ssd you recommended ? Again thanks for the informative and concise video !
I just went to my local Computer store for the thermal paste. But you can also get it from Amazon very affordably.
@@thesavagefilmmaker what you used is a thermal pad and no paste. don´t confuse those 2 terms cause paste will make a mess inside this nvme case. you should actually link the used thermal pad within your video description. the rest of you video is great though! thanks for this neat setup!
Amazing content. As a new IP15 owner, I can see that I have a lot to learn (and purchase). Why can't the wireless lavalier mics be connected by Bluetooth to the phone again? Subscribed.
I think you can use the new DJI mic's with bluetooth, however the audio quality drops drastically.
I wonder if the DJI osmo mobile 6 will work. The idea of a gimbal that is pocketable is also key for me
I think the issue with the OSMO is the clearance on the side might not be adequate.

Yes you can, but it's a bit of a loose connection if you have the iphone in a case.
Hi man! , this is the best video I have seen so far on this topic (and I have seen a lot of them since I am analyzing in depth the possibilities of iPhone 15 vs Osmo Pocket 3). impressive work. instant subscription! thank you. The main reason why I started this analysis is that I'm going to start an interview project on KZhead. which I want to record with two cameras: one frontal and another that goes from 45 degrees to 90 degrees framing the interviewee. Watching this video led me to visit your channel and watch the video “IPhone 15 Pro: A true Cinema Camera?” ¨ in which you mention at 3´ and 26 ¨ that the iPhone 15 does not perform as well as a camera for portraits and close-ups and that is something fundamental for my project, since I do not want the iPhone and its camera man to be so close to the interviewed. Do you think that if I added some iPhone lenses to this setup that you propose here, it could improve this problem? If so, do you consider any superior to others? Because until now the comparison between the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and the iPhone 15 Pro, considering the pros and cons of both for my project, the setup that you put together works better for me. It's just that this problem of close-ups and portraits has caused me to rethink whether this is the best for me. Would you be so kind as to give me your opinion on this matter, please? I think the iphone is not the best camera for your specefic use case. I also don't think the Osmo Pocket 3 is that good an option. They will both be good for the wide angle and they will both be not so good for the close-up angle (if you are using two) I do not have much experience with Iphone lenses, but from what I've seen, they are not amazing quality. Personally I'd recommend find a couple of cheaper 'normal' camera's for interviews, or use one Iphone and one normal camera. Something like the Blackmagic pocket 4k and a lens will cost potentially less than the iphone and could be a good alternative for the type of project you're talking about.
I like it the only thing missing is, how do you charge when your battery gets crazy low from shooting in PRO-RES
MagSafe battery pack?
I was thinking the same thing however, the MagSafe battery interferes with the proper mounting of any ND filters because the magnet is really close to the lens.
Will the DJI Osmo 6 handle the extra weight? I really like your set up but already have a gimbal. I will use your links. Great video.
I think it might be okay weight wise. But can't be sure, I picked the Hohem because it could handle the heaviest payload.

It’s great but doesn’t close when the supplied thermal pad is attached. Maybe my ssd is “thicker” than most. Might buy a tube of thermal paste just for good measure, cos this truly is the best find. Nice one! I DIY’d a magnetic holder for my own ND filter but the SSD was always the tricky part. The T7 is great but this size is better. Hopefully it’s fast enough not to drop frames.
Yeah thermal paste will do the trick. No dropped frames for me.
Thank you for this detailed video. Used your Amazon links to purchase the Kingston SSD and the JeYI Enclosure. But the sad part is I could not get it to detect the SSD drive on the iPhone pro max. Is there anything I missed out or any configuration ?
Yes I had to format the drive on my Mac using disk utility before my iPhone could read it. Once formatted it will show up on your iPhone.

Yes you need to format the drive first using your computer, I formatted it as Exfat drive using disk utility, once formatted your drive will be visible by the phone.
Hello this is great, I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned but adaptor transfers at 20gbps and you specify using one with 40… I cannot find a tidy right angle adaptor like this with the correct transfer rate… woouls appreciate any help … great video thanks

Would be good to get some kind of mini usb-c hub, so that you can plug in that ssd and the rode wireless go 2 at the same time. And maybe get them to stick to the back of the phone with a MagSafe sticker
Yes but things start getting a bit bulky when you do that.

I wasn't able to trouble shoot anything online so I am returning and going the Samsung or Crucial SSD route as lots of creators are showing they work. If you figure out a fix let me know I would be open to exploring this compact design in the future just need an external storage for the video files sooner then later @@360EverydayPerry

On mac this simply means plugging the SSD in, opening 'Disk Utility' selecting the SSD drive and formatting it to ExFat and naming it. Once formatted it will be readable by your Iphone. I don't own a PC but believe you can do exactly the same process using Disk Management with Window.

great vid - the NDs are great for the in-camera lenses but what about putting NDs on anamorphics? is there a solution?
I think it would depend on what anamorphic lens you are using. Some may have a front filter, I think freewell do a set that is compatible with these filters.
I like this setup but I'm trying to understand what you are transmitting your audio to, if your Rode receiver isn't plugged into the iPhone?
Rode wireless pro records straight into its transmitters as well as the receiver. So record into its transmitter and then synch in post.

Yeah me too I have this, and the only Issue I'm running into with the setup in the video is that the USB c adapter suggested can't get all the way into the phone with the polarPro case.
This looks compact and clean but I need to plug the DJI mic 2 into the USB C
Only downfall is the lack of audio splitter options.
Just use their internal record function, you‘re already doing the extra step of shooting log, then you can also sync that audio
Great stuff but question: The M.2 you selected was Gen4....Ive yet to find a Gen4 that the iphone will recognize. Only Gen3...thoughts?
You just need to format it first using Disk Utility on a Mac computer, once it's formatted it will be readable on the Iphone.
I have. 4 different nvme. Multiple formats. Does not see. Gen 3, no problem every time
Should I format the drive exFAT or APFS, Mac journaled for IOS on a mac? I do have one older mac that I might use it on, but most of the time, it would be a newer mac.

Good option but have noticed the Bluetooth option drops the audio quality significantly.
Bro can you confirm me, i ve written freewell because the vnd with the ultrawide lens has a noticeable black area on the corner, the lens pick up part of the filter and they txt me back that the vnd is intended to use with wide and tele lens if i want to use ultrawide i need to crop in slightly
I have been using the ultra wide with the VND and have not noticed this. But maybe it just doesn't bother me.
How did you solve the external audio part with the combo Hoheim iSteady M6 + iphone 15 pro?

@@thesavagefilmmaker Thanks for the reply! I actually used a Belkin USB-C 3.2 Hub to connect both storage & audio on the Hohem iSteady M6. Lark M2 for Audio and Kingston Datatraveler max 512GB Flashdisk for fast writing/reading. It's ugly but it works :3

I haven’t tried editing them in the phone. But I think you may have to copy them first.

Sure, but this camera fits in your pocket, this camera does everything a smartphone does as well as be a camera, this camera is convenient with a battery that lasts hours. This camera is more portable. This camera has insanely good autofocus and stabilisation. Do you see where I’m going here?
I thought this was the video I needed, but today I received my SSD card that I ordered from the link above and I cannot get it to work with my iphone 15 pro max. Any help would be much appreciated.

It seems you can't split the audio without a full dongle or dock attached.
Is this M2 as fast as a bigger m2 or SSD? Or do you compromise speed for form? I see 4k read write speeds but I'm curious if that will lead to dropped frames while recording.
I can't say what speed the larger SSD is, however I've found this will never drop frames when filming in 4k Pro Res LT at any of the frame rates.

the problem with syncing the audio files later ... is finding which audio files go with each movie file... it really can be a headache.. I personally use usbc port for a wireless mic receiver ( so no ssd) but of course then getting footage off of iPhone takes time.. ... great video! I too been searching and experimenting with minimizing my setup.. thanks side note (rant) .. I still dont see why Apple has not yet made a "receiver" built in the iPhone and and sell iPhone Mics ... call them iMics or something I dont care... plus have more than two mics that can connect .. its 2024 I dont see how this is not solved yet...]

There isn't a large enough market for Apple to solve the microphone problem. Facebook had to enter the VR space before Apple thought the numbers would work. Just how Blackberry showed Apple that the smartphone market was worthwhile. I think you're going to see Apple continue to make the iPhone the best portable all-around camera on the market. They already have the photo market on lock. Next up is the video market. Maybe they'll target the filmmakers next?

You need to use your computer to format the drive first. I used Disk Utility to format the drive to exFAT. Once formatted it will be recognised by the iPhone.

Can 2230 PCIe Gen 4 SSD be detected by iPhone 15 now? I learnt from others that only Gen 3 works because of the power requirement. Thanks.
I'm not sure which generation this is, after formatting the drive on my Mac, works no issues.
The Kingston ssd in the links is a gen4. Would be nice to know if this is the actual ssd he used as gen4 can be 2tb, whereas gen3 is max 1tb I believe. I have Sabrent gen4’s that don’t work (not 2230). If confirmed, it might be that the enclosure chip limits the power use or downgrades the speed to 10gb (but that’s a guess).
Polar Pro for iPhone 15 Pro is the best! It is better them Freewell Sherpa. ;)
I prefer the affordability and way the lenses clip on with the Sherpa.
I think there's another solution to external SSD which I haven't seen anyone suggest - put it in your pocket and link it via a USB cable. I've tried it and it works fine as long as you do shots carefully.
True, absolutely an option if you don't mind that wire hanging between your pocket and the phone.

Yes needs to be formatted exfat on your computer first.

Welp, I got this same ssd enclosure but a different ssd(corsair mini 2330) and it's not showing up on my phone. Anything I could check that might be wrong?
I'm guessing it could be the corsair vs kingston but that doesn't seem logical

@@thesavagefilmmaker Some people are saying the phone can't power on the device by itself. I plug it into a samsung galaxy and it pops up fine, same thing with my pc. So I know it's the phone and not any other component. I'm gonna try a PCI 3.0 because there are theories that it's 4.0 that is causing the issue.

Power drain and weight of this method are big concern. That M2 case alone is 85g.
Weight is not very noticeable, power drain... well you'll still get plenty of time, my phone would last at least half a day filming on and off with it, without charge and still last the whole day if I was only occasionally filming with it. To put it into perspective, using this as a C-cam I wouldn't need to charge it until the end of the day.
Can you confirm if this overheats ?
No overheating for me.
I bought many different cases for 2230, specially these Chinese ones are the worst, they get super hot badly up to 70 degree, now I’m using shargedisk, so far it’s the best with fan.
Haven't had any issues with this one, with a bit of thermal paste.

Don’y let anybody con you into buying proprietary filters. Polar Pro’s iPhone 15 case takes standard filters. Also, note that an iPhone 15 will recognise only a limited number of NVMe drives, and this particular enclosure gets clobbered by a number of Amazon reviewers.
If you buy the Polar Pro case (which is more expensive) you also have to buy the seperate filter adapter. You also have to screw your filter on and off everytime you use it. Unlike the Sherpa's version which lets you snap them on and off in an instant. It's not a con, it's a better system. And as mentioned in other comments this NVME drive works exceptionally well as long as it's been formatted first on your computer. Sharpen up.

There's no point in this solution with a gimbal if most of the interface is covered. Handheld it's a good one.

You need to know that that these NVMe SSD drives get extremely hot “70c” and will burn your fingers if you touch them when recording video.
With thermal paste? I've been filming in the Tropical Islands with 30 + degree heat an never experienced it get more than warm to the touch.
@@thesavagefilmmaker yep I’m using thermal paste shooting 4K Apple ProRes, using the same case as you but my card is Western Digital, heats up pretty quick, after 45 min constant shooting it was that hot I couldn’t keep my finger on it for more than a second, the operating temperature for these cards range from 30c to 70c. I applied the thermal paste to the lid and then screwed it down.
In my opinion, Prores is completely unnecessary unless you're specifically working with green screen.
The difference in quality between H.265 and Pro Res is actually quite dramatic.
I dont know about that. H265 is pretty harsh on details, terrible to denoise, and tough on editing... I only use it when I absolutely need storage.
this is the reason why iphone and all phones should have micro sd slot.
Not sure Micro SD cards would be able to process the data rates 4k Pro Res fast enough.
You wouldn’t need to spend $1m on 1tb of storage then though…😂
