The ONLY 3 iPhone add-ons Filmmakers REALLY NEED
This is the MOST modular, minimalist, affordable and universal iPhone 15 filmmaking DIY setup I came up with, that can help you get the best out the iPhone 15 without having to buy any branded expensive Rigs that only work with their proprietary filters.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I forgot to mention you need to cover the back of the filter with tape to avoid any light leaks. Thanks again
What do you mean exactly?
@@TotalControl92 yeah im curious about this too it makes me not want to get it lol
This was really confusing to me as well, but for anyone else who may have been confused, I think I may have figured it out. Look at the overhead shot at the 2:57 mark. The INSIDE of the filter ring is 58mm so that it will fit over ALL the lenses. (Something smaller may not fit and/or could partially obscure any one of these lenses.) But notice the *INSIDE* of this 58mm circle is also slightly *TOO LARGE* and extends beyond the OUTER EDGES of the PHONE. Notice how you can see through the ring, past the phone, and onto the table underneath - slightly in the upper left, and more so on the top edges. (Another example is the sky poking through the top of the phone during the demonstration of the filter ring at the 2:54 mark.) This means that if you're holding the phone up, and there's any light shining from BEHIND you, that non-filtered light may possibly 'leak in' from behind you, REFLECT off the back of the ND filter, and then 'leak' - or bounce-back - onto the front-facing lenses. So you may need to 'square-up' or somehow black out those 'holes' where the 58mm ring goes beyond the edges of the phone to cut any light leaking in from around or behind you. Maybe cut out a round piece of black poster board or felt or something to fit the 82mm ring and then cut out a hole that exactly matches the rounded-square casing of the lenses and then tape that to the back of the ring. I don't know. Sounds kind of janky and I'm not even sure how big a problem this may be. I suppose I may have to spend several hundred dollars to find out! :) Hope this helps. It wasn't obvious to me. But it was a pinned "IMPORTANT NOTE" and I found myself asking questions like... "light leaks?" ... "tape what?" Really hoping we get some feedback if this was a fairly accurate description, if it's really much of a problem, or if any elegant solution has arisen. I might even subscribe. :) But granted... this was a big wall of words. Until then, I've moved everything out of my cart and into a wish list while I consider if I'd rather just use other, more expensive, proprietary solutions as mentioned in the introduction. Thank you for all your hard work. There was a ton of useful information in this video!
@@davestone2792 Yes, that's what was meant, there's a gap that needs to be covered. Gaffers or electrical tape will work well.
This was easily the best breakdown of a diy setup like this that I’ve seen without buying a bunch of overpriced gear. Fantastic job man!
cheers thanks! Yeah was trying to find the most efficient and cost effective way possible. Glad I helped
that 3-part magsafe rig is absolutely genius.
Cheers! Glad you liked it
Your filter adapter solution should be proclaimed from rooftops across the land! Really elegant, kind of obvious and far better than the current run of proprietary ideas.
Absolutely. Second this!
Couldn't agree more. An elegant solution that cuts through the cruft to a solution that is really needed.
W/o the proprietary options, there’s no cashing in on budget filmmakers and their needs 😂
I'm not even a film maker. I don't want to be a film maker. I still watched the whole video anyway.
Hahaha…. Oh wow! I’m really flattered. Thanks for your support 😊
Amazing video and tips! Your resulting contraptions also look very high quality, good job man!
you do understand that now you have to be a film maker, right?
U r not alone brother
😂😂😂😂😂😂
The battery mag ring combo is top tier
Thanks 🙏
The content of this video is a pure gold, I spent a lot of hours to find how to build a great iPhone rig with my existing filters of big cameras, but always struggling with some limitations. Here is the final answer. Thanks a lot!
Protect this man at all cost
Thank you so much
Dear author: I'm a fan of rigging and I LOVED YOUR RIG. This video is more than I was hoping for. You're IQ must be way up 😂. Thank you so much for this vid.
Thank you so much for the kind words! Really appreciate it
Simply straight to the point and 1000% usable. This presentation was a piece of art from the lighting to the transitions, etc. It was one of the best meals ever to my eyes. 🎉
Really happy it was helpful and glad you liked everything about it, thank you so much for watching and for your support
cannot thank you enough for coming up with this DIY hack. I am trying to build a small/lightweight solutiuon that also works with a waterproof case and I think you have nailed it!
On this new years eve (2023) I wanted to thank you for all of your tutorials, insights and tips. I continue to grow and be inspired from your work. Happy new year.
Thank you so much for your kind words and support. Really happy my videos are having a positive impact, may you also have a great 2024, hopefully with your support and everyone’s, the channel will grow bigger and reach further. Thanks again and happy new year 🥳
love the superglue filter solution haha, so simple and sleek!
Right?!
I've been researching on solutions for this for months and that is by far THE BEST DIY setting option I have ever seen! Excellent!!
Really glad this helped reach a solution. Thanks for your support.
Did you try it out? I am having issues with reflection of front lights
I forgot to mention that you need to tape between the filter and the phone to prevent reflections, I added that in the pinned comment
@@THEDPJOURNEY thanks! I have solved that by getting a smaller filter lens (67mm) with a 55-67 mm adapter, almost no light comes from the back and it fits well. For the front reflection, I noticed that being very careful when glueing and aligning the adapter in a way that the filter is perfectly parallel to the lens solves the issue. Thank you for the video, it was very very useful :)
Thank you so much! I’ve been amazed by ALL the pricey options to use my big filters on my iPhone. This video is gold! 👏👏👏
Thank you so much for watching, really happy I can help
What a fantastic video. Great information, and very nice production values. No cuts between three different angles on the face - more concentrating on the task at hand - nice.
Thank you so much Patrick for your appreciation of this video. Happy to offer a straight to the point video, being mindful of everyone’s time 😊
Wow - this is exactly what I was searching for. Your solution is so compact and useful! Great job. Thank you very much for this video.
Much appreciated, thanks for watching
Wow, I just started venturing into iPhone 15 Pro Max as a legit camera. You are brilliant. I can't wait to watch more of your content.
Thanks for watching, working on more tests and will release soon. stand by. Thanks
The use of the MagSafe wallet was smart. Bravo
Now this is the video/set up I've been looking for. Not trying to come out of the gate breaking the bank and getting stuck in another ecosystem while learning. TY
Really happy I can help. And yes, this setup should save you some money, especially that it should also be backward and forward compatible
This is really crafty. Great ideas - noted! Thank you for sharing, brother! Beautiful vid, as well - obviously. 😊
Great job again my man, you come up with the goods! It's pretty much what I had in mind myself, utilising the MagSafe with that crucial drive but I was going crazy just trying to find a simple filter adapter already on the market. DIY is the solution and you nailed it! Thanks dude... can't see myself shelling out $$$ for anything unless it's a lightweight, modular cage that allows universal NOT proprietary filters
Really happy I can help. Yeah it took me a while to find that solution for the SSD
Finally the video that give me the solution for use my filters on my phone, thanks for share your brilliants ideas
Sherif, this is K.C(I rebranded), we had discussed prores vs h265 recently. Your video production and recommendations are simply well thought out, unrivaled and top class. I have even more respect now that I am trying to post and create my very first KZhead video ever. Still uploading. You will find it of value hopefully regarding SSD's for 15 pro/max.(Separately I have the Freewell gear and anamorphic 1.55X already and unfortunately there are issues and the customer service has been unsatisfactory in my case). You are one of those whose polished work and intelligent, valuable advice about filmmaking has inspired me to try and start. Also you interacted with me even though I am a beginner with respect. Thank You.
Hey KC, yeah I remember our conversation about H265! You're the reason why I conducted a test just for that to confirm what I claimed actually, so thanks for that ;) And thanks again for all the kind words and support. Happy I might have contributed in pushing you to also share your experience, that's why I'm here, just to share what I think works for me and hoping it'd work for you as well. Also I'm here for everyone seeking answers, pro or a beginner, I'll never spare anyone from sharing my experience if I have a relevant one to offer. Looking forward to seeing your first video! Each opinion matters
@@THEDPJOURNEY It's finally up! Hope you will find the ssd/flash drive info valuable to you in some way maybe as alternative to Crucial x9/10. Best regards looking forward to your next video too and I will keep trying to strive to get to your level.
OMG! The wallet on top of the charger is brilliant. I’m going with that setup.
Haha, yeah I got about of positive feedback on that one.
BRILLIANT! Thank you for putting this together and sharing - greatly appreciated
My pleasure!
I love how neat your works are, dude!
Much appreciated, thanks
Another awesome post man! Great ideas! looking forward your next one!
Glad you enjoyed it! Stay tuned
DIY genius! Im probably not even going to do this, nor am I a filmmaker, but I enjoyed this video both for the ideas and for the production.
Some great solutions there, just what I was looking for many thanks!
Happy I can help
cleanest one I've seen yet!
I had the same problem looking for a simple filter holder. This is really clever. 👍
Glad I can help. Thanks for watching 👍👍
Thank you. Have been spending days trying to figure out what route I want to go.
Glad I can help, and yeah it took me some decent time and experimenting to reach to this DIY setup
I don’t understand why KZhead is not notifying me when you release a video….luckily, I check now and then your channel. Great work, again. Thank you
Maybe you need to turn on “all notifications” on KZhead and in the phone settings you need to enable notifications as well. Thanks for your support
Thank you...I have them all on for you.@@THEDPJOURNEY
Dude!!! You're amazing! Blessings! Can't wait for more creative content like this from you, excellent 👏
Cheers thanks. Already working on another one now for the recording codecs. Stay tuned
That MagSafe wallet for holding your SSD is an awesome find, thanks for sharing! I'm definitely going to use that. Though personally, I bought the Freewell filter, if you just buy the case + VND, it's only $100. I still can't get over how good the Log footage looks on the 15 Pro, it's ridiculously good for something coming out of a phone as long as you keep the ISO down.
Yeah that Wallet was a great find ! Yeah the Freewell is a good option, but again what if you want a polariser? A difusion filter? A LowCon? Gradient ND? the list goes on... Even if I end up buying one of those options, I still need an option to mount my existing filters, otherwise you’re gonna end up buying a whole new set of filters
@@THEDPJOURNEY I think the Polar Pro Litechaser 15 has that option. Also expensive though ...
Perfect video, the best info for this subject. Thank you, can not wait to see your experience with the codecs!!!
Thanks for watching. Already working now as we speak on the codec video
we rarely see smart diy now a days. you are intelligent mate.
Much appreciated, thanks for the support
Thanks so much for sharing such valuable information. Made my day!
And your comment also made my day, thanks for watching
Love the battery idea, think I'll combine it with the filter option. Fantastic video, subscribed.
Really glad I can help. welcome aboard
Congratulations on all the tips and for sharing them! 👌👌👌👌
Much appreciated, thanks for your kind comment
I’ve been looking for a threaded 67mm solution. Thanks for the many alternatives and examples Thank you!
Happy to help!
Extremely helpful thank you for sharing your research.
Glad I can help
Great video! Please keep uploading, I've been following you since early on and have always enjoyed your work.
Thank you so much for your support! I’m about the finish editing the episode about H265 v ProRes this week. So stay tuned, it’ll be a big one. Thanks again
@@THEDPJOURNEY Awesome! As a content idea, you can control the BlackMagic camera app with all the Tilta Nucleus systems including the new Nano II. I did a quick one about the app and Nano II, but you have a much larger audience that would probably appreciate the content.
This is genius, simple and effective solution, I am thinking to maybe make something like this for my Pixel 7 too
Glad I can help
Amazing idea! Thanks for sharing it with us!
Thanks for watching
Great tips, thank you! The MagSafe wallet was the exact solution for my predicament of owning a leather case, but wanting to use my Crucial X10 4TB (already own it, great minds think alike) to record. Also already owned the short cable, but the 40Gbps version. The wallet was the missing part of the equation. Now I can keep using my Nomad Horween leather case while running and gunning with style.
Really happy I offered something compatible with what you already have. great minds think alike ;)
AWSOME, thanks for sharing this.
I’ve been using my iPhone professionally for over a year on a daily basis with customers. Two tips: - A cage protects your phone better. And there’s always a step up ring set that goes from 35mm to 82mm. - Your filter adapter has openings on the back because it sticks outside your phone. That leads to reflection. Light will fall in from behind and reflect against the back of your filter. This is also solved with step up rings. I use Beastgrip products and I’m very happy with it. Price is good.
I Did answer in the pinned comment about that gap. I just forgot to mention it in my video, check it out Keep in mind this DIY solution is mainly for people who don’t want to invest in cages with proprietary filters that cost a lot, it’s just an easy and affordable way to use your existing filters and iPhone cover.
@@THEDPJOURNEY I agree: I’d never buy a cage where the vendor locks you in for their filters or add on lenses. That’s the beauty of cages with a standard thread and step up rings. Meanwhile I also have an Neewer cage, also with an 58mm filter holder. I’m using a 20 year old pola filter I had from my photography hobby.
Yeah I saw that one from Neewer, I bought one myself, it came out a couple of months after I posted this episode actually
Great work! Thank you for making this video.
My pleasure, thanks for watching
Oh well. Awaiting your next episode!
Thanks for watching!
This was useful, informative and well presented. Thank you.
Really appreciate it. Glad it was informative. Thanks for watching.
all I needed to know in 1 single video! thanks a lot man
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching
A thinking man. Great solution!
Cheers thanks
In one word: Brilliant!
Thanks 🙏 glad you enjoyed it
Great video and elegant presentation 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks so much!
bravo 👍 simple & great knowledge sharing !
Glad you liked it!
This was so much value.Thank you so much.
Really happy you like it thank you so much
This is really a very good budget guide for beginners. You can also buy a magnetic holder with 1/4 screw mount in it.
Yup, but that would prevent you from mounting the filter mount or ssd
Amazing!! To say the least. Really good to know.
My pleasure
Thanks for this video. Lots of good tips and products.
Glad it was helpful!
Minimalist thinking. Well done!
Cheers thanks
Great one, and helpful as always. Awaiting the next one - the battle between h.265 vs ProRes. (Fingers are crossed for the H.265😊)
Thanks, and yeah I’m working on that and some other ones as well. Stay tuned
I really want to see your look and review dedicated to Sony FX30. It checks a lot of boxes and for people like me that still love APS C, it might be a great camera. Cheap, smal and lightweight lenses. There are quite a lot advantages.
Haha, welcome to the club. The Ulanzi phone clamp is worth a try, allows for clamping Samsung T7 between clamp and phone case, has 1/4 20 mount. Filmmaking just got a whole lot better.👍🎥
Which one is it? Keep in mind we need a pretty deep clamp to hold the phone +SSD+filter mount, all iphone clamps I found can only hold the phone.
Very helpful! Thank you.
I have found the Powrig Magfilter system to be a good alternative as a lens filter mount. It's basically just a plate that magnetically mounts onto the phone and the receiver is just a standard filter screw-on. You would need a case, though. It uses its own magnet to mount, and you wouldn't wanna tape another magnet onto the back of your phone.
This is brilliant and helpful! Thanks!
Thanks Humeid, really appreciate it
YOU ARE INCREDIBLE. THANK YOU!!!
Thanks man! Really appreciate it
It's so great to see someone that thinks like me. All of the rigs you can buy are too complicated. It makes me want to do a 3D printed piece that just has a filter mount, a tripod thread, and a MagSafe attachment. Small, versatile, and easy to remove.
Great minds think alike! Thanks for your support
@@THEDPJOURNEY For sure! Love to see good how-to videos made in the age of the brand reviewer.
Exactly, I started this channel to share my experience working as a DP, what I learned, still learning and what I go through to be able to do what I do. Which sometimes means DIYing stuff. It wasn’t about reviewing gear to get them for free, I review them just because I’m considering them for my work. Thanks again for your support
👍on the DIY filter holder!
Cheers
Very informative and practical video. Being a novice/hobbyist into this field, appreciate the value of minimalism (money and otherwise). Your knowledge in the field is very impressive. Subscribed and looking forward for more videos from you on iphonography. PS: SSD capacity in description should be TB not GB 😉
Happy I can help, and thank yo so much much for subscribing. I'll be working on more ihonography video soon. Stay tuned. And thanks for the GB catch, already fixed it ;)
Clean setup!
Cheers thanks

Brilliant brother!

this is very clean I like it
Appreciate it
Very clever man!

Great rig!
Cheers thanks
Great explanation and I made already good use of it. I do have one point of attention: one Crucial died on me during a recording after only three days of use. The BM app gave an error message and that was it. I finished the day using internal storage only. Couldn't repair it, despite using professional tools. In the end I was able to recover apx 520Gb of data (using EaseUS and Diskwarrior, both on Mac). My other Crucial worked fine. I have no idea why the SSD stopped working. I used the short flat-cable you described, and also taped the connectors to the iPhone and to the SSD as I use the setup in a dynamic situation involving unicycles (see my shorts). I didn't drop the hardware, didn't hit anything. Crucial didn't have an explanation, but they offered a replacement disk straight away. I will use that, but will also look into a setup using fast SD-cards.
I love DIY gear! More iPhone videos please! :) I subscribed just in case. :)
Thank you so much for the support, I wasn’t expecting people would like DIY that much, it seems I’ll share a lot more DIY things I’ve done. Thanks again and welcome aboard.
I own most of Beastgrips products. At the end of the day I only use my cage, tele lens, 77mm nd filter, and 1TB sd.
Genius!
Cheers
Very helpful info thanks
