  • Here's an extremely helpful suggestion that I have learned living with cats for 38 years. Leave their carrier out and about with the door open as opposed to storing it in a closet somewhere and only taking it out when you're taking them somewhere. One of my I have two cats and one of their carriers is on the couch and one is on the bed and they go in and out of them whenever they want and sleep in them. This way the carriers are not as scary thing but rather something that's comforting and they don't feel out of control. It smells like them and all of that. Hope that helps

  • Years ago, when I first started having bad depression, I went to visit a therapist. I drove over there but arrived early so parked in a nearby car park to wait and, because it was a hot day, I had both the driver and passenger doors open. After a while a cat jumped into my passenger seat, had a bit of an explore in the back, then sat in my lap. It was like he knew why I was there. When it was time for my appointment I didn't want to turf him out where there were dangerous cars about so I started the engine and drove very slowly, with him still purring in my lap, to the edge of the car park where it was safer to let him go. All these years later I have never forgotten him and I truly believe he was sent to keep me company and let me know I was loved.

  • My oldest cat LOVES strangers and will greet them at the door. She once followed a repairman down into the basement and watched him work, he talked to her and my cat will look at a person’s face when they talk, tries to understand. So she ‘hung’ with him, sniffed each tool and the only thing I could say about her is she is so bored with us, she sees new people as ‘fresh meat’.

  • All the cats I've had a were afraid of water, except one he was polydactyl and surprised me one day I was out on a small lake on a float, I left him on the shore chasing after bullfrogs. I turned to see where he was and couldn't find him then I noticed something in the water, it was him swimming out to get me. I paddled closer to him and lifted him onto my float. After that I couldn't keep him out of water, and I was using a cheap plastic float, so I bought him his own float that was canvas covered (a little tougher for his claws). And whenever I would go out on the water his float was attached to mine. He was super intelligent too. He was so awesome to have around!!! I called him Bigfoot : ) Thanks for the video. Edited to say he was actually a kitten when this started.

He wants them to hold him and rock him like a newborn baby, but he’s more than twice the size of 2 newborns put together 😂and weighs more than any of my children at 1 yr old lol. It’s generally the people who are taken aback by a house cat larger than some bobcats 😂 He is 11.11kg/ 24.5lbs and is as tall as my knees. Plus he’s honestly the sweetest kitty ever. We have his sister and our adult son has the other 2 they are all littermates and sisters and brothers- we each have a boy and a girl. My sons boy, is as tall and long as our boy, but weighs a little less. He’s also very friendly and loves people. I’ve had many different kinds of cats over the years, but maine coons are some of my favorites them and Siamese kitties have some of the biggest personalities. 💕😁

A couple of them will jump up beside me and paw at me until they get what they want, usually a few minutes of loving. The others just walk back and forth crying out, very loudly, until I pay attention to them! There are times when this is annoying, but most of the time it just lets me know that I am loved by many! • My parents had a cat that lived to be 18 yrs old. I have had 3 cats that lived to be 18 x2 and 19 yrs old. When my Fred died on the way to our vet's, my vet hugged me saying he didn't get to treat very many 18 yr old cats. Candi is 19 and still going strong. Being loved by a cat is sweet. No new fur balls until Candi decides to give up living. But we will always have room for more. My secret for long life for my kitty friends, keep their litter box clean, food area and dishes clean, love them on their terms and, as they get old (10+yrs), don't stress them. After they reach age 12, I only take them to vet's if they get injured or not feeling well.

On beginning of covid we moved out to countryside side and took Cleo with us. She had really happy and peaceful time with us before she died age 19. We wanted to adopt another cat ,but we have noticed a black feral cat that was watching us. We've started to feed him, and allowed him to do everything on his own terms. Feral Tyson now decided to stay with us. He have cat flap, so he have his freedom. What we couldn't predicted was the biggest trust from him and bonding. Compared to Cleo he never was let down by humans. In future we're planning to adopt more senior cats :)

  • I've owned two cats (at different times), and I got them both as kittens. Back then, flea treatments weren't available for kittens, and both of mine had fleas. My way of trying to deal with the fleas was to give them a bath most days, while brushing through their fur with a nit comb to pick out the fleas. I took care not to wet their heads too much so water didn't get in their ears. Because I had the water nice and warm, added to a lot of rubbing and attention to dry them afterwards, having a bath became an enjoyable event for them... ...to the point that they purr with the warm water showering over them!!! Sadly, both my cats have died, but as sad as that is, they both had wonderful lives full of love and attention!

    • Makes me miss my mom's cat she called Oliver but I called him Puppycat because he acted more like a dog. He was 13 lbs, orange and white. Wasn't afraid of most dogs and would touch noses with dogs walked on a leash by the front yard. Except he didn't seem to care for my dog, which was a beautiful high content wolfdog. He would follow my dad on his one mile walk through the neighborhood, but most of all always wanted me to take him for rides, especially when I had a convertible. He would climb into the dashboard and sit there so he could see where we were going, while also sniffing the air just like my dog. Sadly, he was torn apart one day by two pitbulls that one of the neighbors liked to let loose on purpose to kill cats. Those dogs killed at least 10 cats that we knew of and terrorized countless mothers and children before they could be stopped. The owner of the pitbulls was defiant and proud, thought it was funny that his dogs had killed most of the outdoor cats in the neighborhood. Too bad my Wolfdog was already gone by then. She would have protected the Puppycat, no doubt.

  • I've always been a dog person but last year I adopted two kittens from separate litters-- a male and a female. My boy Odin is definitely far more affectionate toward me in terms of daily affection, but my girl Astrid can be just as affectionate, if not even more so, when she actually wants to be; which is generally only a few times a week. She will lay on my chest and bury her head under my chin, whereas Odin likes to lay above my head and softly rest his paw on my face. Lol Astrid doesn't typically expose her belly for anything, but Odin does it often. He even likes being pet on his stomach. All in all, my boy doesn't seem to hate anything other than closed doors. He's all about peace and love and harmony and way too chill, and Astrid is my little Independent devil girl. She hates strangers but she's like evil with her hate. She pretends to be nice and rubs up on people and as soon as they pet her, she slaps the shit out of them. She has the capacity to mean to anyone, including me sometimes, but has an undying love for my dog. She has never swatted him or been irriated by him for any reason and he gets most of her affection lol.

My Missy who passed away in 22 never objected to taking a bath, provided I suffered as well. I miss that cat every day. She had a lot of dog characteristics as well. She loved car rides and walking with me. We often went to the parts store or the hardware store together. She would ride on my shoulder in the stores. Everyone hates a dirty litter box except dogs who think it is the treat dispenser.

When we moved someone let them out and he was lost for six months so when we found him I suppose part of it was that he had to rely on others but when we brought him to the new place in a duplex apartment he would visit neighbors and they would put dishes out for him. Running joke was he rubs legs for treats. He is 12 years old now and we've been in our own place for a couple years where I'm fairly sure he's met most of the neighbors and has some fans that don't know his story... They just like to give him a rub and some treats.

When I was a child I would lie on the floor of the car and whine and cry just to make sure my mother (the driver) knew she was supposed to make the bad smell go away! • Excellent summary. The cats that own us all hate stale food or food that something is obviously wrong with. It is easy to write them off as being picky. We look after a colony of strays with food assistance from the SPCA (their switch to a trap, neuter and release policy left us with a problem). Being taken to the vet (bottled up in a carrier) doesn't go down well and traveling in car isn't enjoyed either. Mostly they are content - we have far too soft a spot for them. Treats of one sort or another are frequent. Occasional dosing with medicine requires a bit of underhand trickery. The part Persian (Prince Charming aka Angora) is OK with a daily groom above and below. Demands it in fact.

A few weeks ago, I saw how skinny he was, and I started leaving meat scraps out for him. In a week he was staying close by. A couple weeks ago, I got up one frosty morning to find he had made a bed of leaves nearby. Poor old guy was covered with frost and shivering. Still, I knew he was too wild to bring inside. So I took a box, and put a couple of old shirts in it for bedding. And put it on my porch so he's out of the wind, rain, and frost. He knew right away it was for him! He's slept there ever since. Sometimes when I come back from the store, he'll be laying there all comfortable and purring. He does let me pet him. Sometimes I can pick him up for a little bit. He likes the petting, and rubs his head against my foot and calf. I call him "Buddy". As in, he's my little buddy. But I always remember what John Wayne said in _True Grit_ regarding cats... _"Nobody owns him."_ (the Cat; General Sterling Price) _"He just rooms with me."_ I haven't had a cat in thirty years! So I watched this as a refresher course!🤣 I doubt he'll ever be an indoor cat. He's very Independent! But I'll look after him as long as he wants to stay. That said, if he left tomorrow, it wouldn't surprise me one bit. Cats! Only they know what they're thinking!🤷😁

We never put him in costumes on the holidays, but one time he did get his paws dyed for Easter (He was a black cat with white paws, so for about a month, he had four differently-colored paws). He didn’t seem to mind after the fact, once his paw fur dried out. But giving him a bath? Yeah, you’d want to be wearing some thick elbow length mitts, because he was a whirling dervish of teeth and claws when you got him in the tub.

  • I once lived in my car for a year with a cat. Stormy loved her carrier, she was bottle raised and because when we rescued her we had 3 other adult cats she was kept in her carrier as a safe spot until she was old enough to interact with them. It was always her "house", forevermore. When we lived in the car, she rode in her carrier on top of a couple boxes in the back seat, securely fastened down, but high enough that she could see out the windows. She was a fully adult cat the first time she ever rode in a car, and somehow she took to it immediately, and we never had any issues with her when we were living in the car. She was tiny. Lived to be 13 years old, and looked like she was a year at most, but always the friendliest, bravest, most adaptable cat I've ever had. I have also had a total of 8 cats over the years, and every single one of them have loved belly-rubs to the point where they would lie down next to me, grab my hand and bring it to their tummy so I can scritch it. I think you just have to have the touch. lol

    • I watch a lot of veterinarian treating cat videos. Often the veterinarian has trouble getting the cat patient OUT of the carrier. They run back in and hide. Sometimes the vet has to tip the carrier upside down. Or remove the door and the roof--maybe the sides, too. Oh! and as soon as the carrier is made available at end of treatment cat immediately runs inside waiting to go home.

      @smithcook1@smithcook1 Жыл бұрын
    • Yeah.. Both of my cats love being in the carrier, and belly rubs. Thought it odd at first, but no. They'd just walk up to the carrier (we have a cloth one.) They'd hide in it, play in it, jump on it when the other one is inside of it. And belly rubs are the more hilarious part of the interaction, they just walk right up to us and plop to their side and start rolling around on their back until you pet their belly. The one that does this the most is also the most skittish one.. Like a single sneeze sends him running to different rooms, yet is the first one to go to the most vulnerable position for a cat. They also like baths, though we don't give them baths, they've been known to stand under water facets, even laying in their water dishes. Not the first cats I've had that have liked this, same with blowing on their faces, they do that long-slow blink and try to nuzzle your face when it happens.

All of the indoor-outdoor cats love tummy rubs. 1 of them does like your cat and grabs my hand and pushes it to her tummy. • I visited a woman who was ill already for 1 year, she was a colleage of me at work and i didn't know she had 2 cats. She welcomed me and made coffee in the kitchen. I walked a little around in the livingroom looking for what kind of books there were and settled myself on the sofa after taking off my jacket which i put on the sofa next to me. After a few seconds 2 cats appeared, looking carefully around and at me, but i ignored them. The first one jumped on my jacket and lay down, the other one settled him/herself at the right side of my leg and started spinning. As my colleage entered the room, she suddenly stood still and said: "No, no, that's not possible". I asked her what she meant. "The cats, they are sitting next to you at both sides, that's impossible". And she told me that every time she got visitors, whether it was family, friends or colleagues, the cats disappeared under the bed and appeared after they had left the house. I told her that cats have a special feeling and that i also love cats, but never call them, i simply let them come to me and they feel fine in my neighbourhood. She was very surprised and accepted my explanation

Nine times out of ten, they will come over and hop up. Good idea not to touch then until they have settled comfortably. You can then bliss them out with a soft rub under the chin.

  • Both of my rescue cats love belly rubs since the first week!! Oh and my Ragdoll acts like a dog, he gets supervised walks outside (although I'm sure he would have never gone for a harness), he isn't a lap cat, but he does like to lay down at my feet when I'm sitting in my chair at night watching TV. I also have a string of bells handing from the inside of my front door, unfortunately he seems to think that they are there for him to let me know when he wants to go outside for a walk. Lots of times in the evening when I get up to get something from the kitchen, he bolts for the door and stands by it meowing loudly to me and ringing the string of bells. Many years ago when I had different indoor/outdoor cats, I'd go to the front door and call their names in the evening and they'd come running to the door for bedtime.

  • A lot depends on the cat and the circumstances. They are all individuals. Sam and Gunther waited to decide about riding in the car. When we got to the main highway, if we turned left they started hollering. That meant the vet. If we turned right, it meant a visit to my parents. That meant a long ride and comfort at the end of it. So they curled up on our laps and went to sleep. And about baths -- I remember one cat that didn't mind at all. Our 3-year-old had decided to clean her up and had sprayed her all over with 409 and tried to rub her spots off. I turned up just as he realized he had made a mistake. So I bathed the cat in the sink, using baby shampoo. (No time for fancy preparations.) I rinsed her well, trying to get all the 409 off. Then I wrapped her in a towel, took her to my bathroom and dried her with my hair dryer. I think the cat was resigned to its fate. She was not struggling or yowling at any point. Just sitting there.

We started with them in their carriers, but before I hit a neighboring state at the start of the ride I found the cats were much more comfortable being free to move about the car. Was smart enough to pick up a divider between the front row seats and the rear and wagon part of my vehicle. This meant the cats could be cuddled up in their blankets, easily accessible to food, and one thing my cats adore... Oldies music! It made for a very good trip.

It was super shocking because she was a former street cat (withdrawn and aloof in the shelter) and she was afraid of just about everything but me. Many years ago when I owned a Chow-Chow, I discovered that any stray cat in the yard had just clipped off at least 8 of it's lives just by picking my yard. I vowed when I got Oreo, that she must be socialized with cats with the intent of preventing my previous mistake. It worked. She has no reaction to stray cats she sees when she is outside. However, as a herding dog by nature, she does herd them; meaning when the cats want to race up and down the hallway, she puts a stop to it. I don't mind that so much.

He has no opinion about costumes since we used one to keep him from licking an open sore during an allergy episode. He does, however, dislike car rides unless on a lap. I flew our cat from Philadelphia to Japan (21 hours) on my lap. Not a whimper or moan and the flight attendants loved stopping by to pet him. I felt sorry for him not peeing for so long although I offered pads and privacy to do so. When we reached Kakogawa and I let him out of the carrier, he peed a small lake. He sleeps with us under the covers when he's uncomfortable about something. Once that discomfort is gone, he sleeps with mom in another room. She loves it and he knows it.

  • I know i know. It was said in the beginning that this doesn't always mean every cat hates these certain things. My cat loves walks with a harness or not, she usually follows behind my walks at a certain distance but she's always in my eye of view and vice versa. I like in the country so I take my dogs out to the pasture from time to time or go on trail walks and my cat loves to follow along in the trees and pushes. Sometimes she even comes and walks by my ankles but I feel I walk to slow for her consistent movement. She's also probably very curious of all the noises and scents that are in the trees. In always listening and give a little "tsk tsk" if I don't hear her scurrying in the bushes or see her in a tree or see her in general, just to make sure there's nothing that scared her off.. like a possible threat to me and my dogs. This one time she just disappeared and it was probably 5 minutes after she disappeared that I notice she wasn't following so I went to the edges of the trees and did a lil "tsk tsk" and there was a Wolverine in the bushes hissing and I immediately calles my dogs to go back home and when we were on the way back to our house, guess who was sitting in the driveway waiting 😂. Sometimes I go into the city with her and she doesn't at all mind hanging out in my backpack then when we get to a non busy area I let her out and she loves it.

  • I had a cat that was so picky about her litter box that she didn't want to use it if there was even 1 dirty spot. She would go to the litter box and meow loudly if it was "dirty". The first time she did this, I was worried she was hurt, or had a UTI, because she sounded stressed. I realized she was reluctant to go in a dirty box, so I cleaned it while she sat waiting. As soon as it was clean, she got in and used it. So, what happened? You can guess. This cat trained me well. I started scooping each time after she used it (when I was home). I have had friends who only cleaned their cats' boxes every few days, or weekly. My cat would have been a basket case and started going in my house. She was very sensitive to odors. She would rush out of the room if I sprayed anything: perfume, hairspray, room deodorizer, etc. The up side of this particular cat's litter box habits? I didn't have to worry about "dirty litter box" smell, and she never had an accident in the house!

  • I had friends with a cat that hated closed doors even more than my own do. It would have to open every last interior door or there was no peace in the house. You could get up and close all the bedroom doors, hall closet, and bathroom doors and it would promptly go to each one and open them. Having handle levers it had no problem. Close them all and right behind you it would open them again and again and again. Never ever would it not go and open the doors. Other than this little quirk it was a super awesome cat.

  • The Lion King pose is also painful, especially for heavier cats. It puts pressure on their shoulder joints, and can even dislocate a cat's shoulder. I never knew that and used to pick my cat up by under his arms. Vets say the best way is one hand under their belly and one under their chest.

    • One should refrain from picking up young kittens - less than 4 weeks old or so. Their rib cages are fragile and easily get deformed. In cats, pectus excavatum is NOT congenital (as some have claimed) it's acquired.

  • Our cat senses whether a person is not quite someone she wants to know. And we use it as good information. Certain people come in our house and she immediately likes them and socializes immediately. Other people she runs from instantly. We had a plumber who came to do a repair he was quite the image. He had more piercings than I’d ever seen, tattoos all over extreme dyed hair. She adored him and would not leave him alone. She sat on his stomach as he worked under our sink. Then we’ve had contractors show up and she runs and hides. Needless to say they don’t get the job. If she does not trust them..we don’t either.

    • I had to get rid of my mother-daughter cats because the apartment inspector threatened to condemn the place. Yes, they've done it before here. You have to be out THAT DAY, it is "unsafe" according to them, not an eviction. I had a cat for over a decade I suspected was part Maine Coon. She is different now all alone with me. Any doubt she is Maine Coon is gone. She exhibits all the Maine Coon traits people talk about. Oh and she is big and 18 pounds. No she is not far either, but very fluffy in her fur.

    • My personal experience is that if they have other animals to interact with, they don't need as much of our attention. But when they're the only animal in the house, they need more of our attention. I think that the loss of those other animals also bothers them. Just as humans, they have their own way of mourning. Some might require more attention and others may fall into a depression.

  • Being a big brained boy, I figured that by introducing my cat to a carrier early and letting her have access to it whenever she wanted, she wouldn't hate it as much. And it paid off, as she loves her carrier and will sleep in it of her own will. Getting her in there is easy and she doesn't make a fuss, so long as she can see somebody she knows.

  • I've lived with cats all my life. I've noticed early on that they don't like to be pet/touched when eating. Yet, nearly every cat video you see people petting their cats while eating, especially when they are young. Can you imagine someone stroking your head/hair while you sat down to eat dinner? So many clueless people. 😔

    • That makes a lot of sense! But it does depend on the cat. Mine doesn't mind being pet while she's eating. 🐈 But I can see why others would!

    • Yeah, well some clueless people's cats might not mind getting petted while eating. Remember, everybody is different and every cat is different. Some like baths while others don't. Some don't mind getting dressed in costumes while others do not. That's why I always say, it depends on your cat.

    • Well my cat came from off the streets was stray. For about the first two years could not touch her or would get popped. Other than that was wonderful never got in my lap and once in awhile be on foot of bed. Well to get her used to the human touch she would let me close to give her food sitting by just waiting on me like her butler. Anyway I started to touch her right after delivering chow. Her being hungry did not take well but after awhile like a few months she started purring for the first time. Petting her while feeding was how I broke through.
