In this video, we’ll discuss the top 18 human behaviors that cats hate and wish you wouldn’t do
Forced socialization
Unless it's a housemate or friend, cats are generally not fond of other felines. This is because of their animal instincts and territorial nature.
Not Having a Safe Hiding Spot
In the wild, cats often look for a hiding spot to protect themselves from other predators or stalk their prey.
Cats are usually hyper-alert, even while dozing, so an enclosed hiding spot may allow them to feel secure and relaxed.
Declawing them
This one is a must to avoid. Declawing is torturous to cats. It would be akin to cutting off our fingers at the last knuckle, leading to pain and mobility issues. It can even breed a sense of feeling vulnerable or defenseless. Cats who go through such insecure emotions can develop aggressive behaviors to make up for their constant state of vulnerability.
Feeding them milk
Although feeding cow’s milk to cats is thoughtful as a pet lover, it hurts them more than it helps. This is because cats are lactose intolerant.
Cats are attracted to milk because of the protein and fats that they can sense and smell in it.
Roughhousing
Children are unpredictable and impulsive. They often behave in ways that are frightening or distressing to cats. Kids are grabby; they make loud noises and sudden moves. Cats prefer more predictable and serene companions
An enclosed litter box
A covered litter box may look cleaner than an open one to you, but cats prefer to have large litter boxes that offer air flow. Closed boxes prevent proper airflow, which discourages use.
Strong smells
A cat’s sense of smell is 14 times stronger than that of humans. Now think how much nauseated your cat can get when sprayed with a scented product, or brought close to a particularly strong-smelling substance.
As such you may want to protect your pet from your perfume, deodorants, household cleaning products, bleach, disinfectants, citrus fruits, onions, garlic, pepper and any strong-smelling chemicals as much as possible. Likewise, cats hate a dirty, smelly litter box, so make sure to scoop and replace litter in a timely fashion.
Dog Visitors
dogs have an instinct to chase small preys - especially if they’re fleeing. It's no secret that cats typically don't enjoy being chased.
Whisker Fatigue
Whisker stress occurs when a cat’s whiskers rub against the sides of the food bowl. A cat's whiskers are so sensitive that they can become easily fatigued by unnecessary contact.
Less than Fresh Food
When it comes to dinner time, your cat wants nothing less than fresh food.
If you let your cat’s food sit out in the dish for some time, your kitty may turn their nose up at it, viewing it as past its prime.
Cradling them like a baby
When you pick up a cat and cradle them like a baby, they may feel vulnerable and want to find a place to get back to where they feel they are in control of their surroundings.
If you cradle a cat when it doesn’t want to be held, you can injure them by squeezing them too hard or dropping them when they try to scramble away.
Vet clinics
Sounds and intense smells of vet clinics make them a sure bet when it comes to stressing out felines.Cats are very attached to their home territory, and they prefer to live with a very predictable routine that doesn’t involve interacting with strangers or travelling away from their home environment.
Rough petting
There’s something else that cats don’t like. It’s being petted too hard. Cats are so cute and cuddly that you want to handle them and give them a strong pat-down.
Belly Rubs
A cat’s stomach is a very sensitive part of their body and they hate it when you pet their belly as this region protects the most vital organs.
Being Teased
Teasing cats with items like laser pointers, tugging on their tail, sliding them across a wooden floor, and dressing them up in doll’s clothing are things that cats hate.
Arguing in Front of Them
Cats are very sensitive to loud noises, and yelling can get them really scared. A hostile environment is not good for you and is certainly not good for your pet.
High-pitched Sounds
While cats hear low-pitched noises about as well as we do, they can pick up high-pitched sounds much better than humans.
High-pitched noises to cats can come in ways you would not expect. Ambulance sirens, loud music, hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, or even your phone’s ringtone are some of the high-pitched sounds that cats hate.
Low Temperatures
Cats like temperatures of 20 degrees higher than human’s ideal temperature. In fact, a cat’s coat isn’t made to protect them from low temperatures. On the contrary, their coat protects their delicate skin from extreme heat.
Blowing in their face
Do you like a rush of air in your face? Why do it to your cat? People seem amused or surprised when cats snap at them when they blow in their faces. That's a great way to make your cat hate you.

  • On Holding your cat. My cat was a young adult when I got her and wasn't handled. hated being picked up. I started by just picking up right before feeding and putting her down as soon as she wanted. also, rather than cradling, let her sit inside your elbow, its much more natural. after doing this for a while, Id just pick her up at random and stand there. don't move, just hold for a second, and bump up the time. once you can do this and have her relax to purring, its time for the fun step. this is a game I call spaceship. she should be totally fine with being picked up by now, so pick her up with your arm under her belly, hand on the chest, and legs dangling. once she is OK with that, move slowly in whatever direction she is looking. once she understood SHE was in control, she LOVED the game. the elevation, the effortless movement, all the new things to sniff. fascinated by doorknobs and light switches. access to all the high shelves. she loves the top shelf of my wardrobe, and now asks to go up. trust n patience

    @arjovenzia@arjovenzia2 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah, the key to getting cats used to being held starts with letting them down gently as soon as they want down. Keep that up long enough and they eventually realize that you'll put them down whenever they want and just chill out in your arms. Also, totes yes to the spaceship thing!! Keep them interested in new experiences by slowly moving to what they are looking at like you do. Holding them up to windows is GREAT. I did that with a cat that hates being held and she let me hold her for a minute because she was so fascinated at the new view out the window.

    • My old cat loved being picked up by me. I would have her front paws over my pack shoulder and support her lower body. She was so relaxed and would practically melt into my arms. I still miss her to this day since she would let me pick her up and hold her for however long I wanted since she knew I wouldn’t drop her and put her back down gently.

    • yes! we do have one cat whose hated being picked up her whole life (not even my mom could get her adjusted to it and she’s 11-12 years old) and i only pick her up if i absolutely can’t get her to move. then there’s my cat Crescent who is getting used to being held. i should definitely try walking him around to show him things. he will tolerate me holding him but then i put him down once i can tell he’s over it. and thennn there’s Crutch, who will actually cry until you hold him by having him slung over the shoulder and his bottom is supported. i will rock him while walking around the house until he’s done being a big baby lmao.

    • @@OgdenM Yea the key is being gentle. My cat still doesn't LIKE being picked up, as I rarely do. But she doesn't fight against it either when I do. Because she knows I'm careful, and that I'll let her back down at any point if she wants. And then there's my best friends' late cat. (she sadly passed away of old age late last year) She LOVED being picked up by him and his wife. To the point where she'd start purring right away if they did. xD

    • Some cats just don't like being picked up. I think we expected certain things of cats or want them to like certain things but sometimes it's not in the cards, my best friend Mr bo jangles was the best cat I ever had he was a 24lb monster, strong as a dog, loved to play tug of war and play rough but he hated being picked up so I very rarely ever did it. I have a small female on the other hand who loves it and climbs up my leg to be picked up all the time lol.

    • awww, that reminds me of one of my family's cats as a kid. She was a lap cat and insanely demanding about being in laps and being pet well in said lap. I was watching TV one day, she hopped up on the couch next to me and meowed, looked me in the face and looked at my lap where my hands were resting. I ignored her.... so she of course started headbutting my hands. I still ignored her and after awhile gave in, moved my hands so she could get in my lap; but DID Not pet her. She tried to get me to pet her by nudging my chin etc etc and I still refused. So she finally got pissed at me and bit my chin. This is the same cat that insisted she give birth in my bedroom closet and dragged a 1/2 birthed kitchen across the house from the den we made in the bathroom to my closet. I totes was HER human.

    • @@saraschriner9797 You could try softpaws nailcaps, but opinions on this vary. I have tried them on one of my grandmother's indoor cats because she had blood clotting issues, and the cat was fine with them. It's actually a myth that nailcaps prevent the claws from retracting or damage them, as long as you use them right. If your cat is an outdoor cat I would strongly advise against nail capping or even clipping, though. Nails are a cat's first line of defense and primary toolset, and removing them can pose a great risk to them, or cause anxiety/ oral fixation. If your cat is still young, you could teach them to play with soft paws, most british shorthairs seem to do this naturally already. But results, if any at all, vary depending on the individual. The most important part is not using your hands as a cat toy, and immediately ending play or cuddles if nails are used. Unfortunately, sharp nails are part of the package when it comes to cats, and thanks to evolution there isn't any real way to blunt them other than manual intervention.

      @sazzle312@sazzle3122 жыл бұрын
    • @@sazzle312 id just like to say as a vet tech that you *must* clip the nails of a cat before attaching nail caps to the claws. The will not wear down the claws with caps on and they can overgrow and injure the cat. I strongly advise actually clipping your cat's nails every two weeks if you prefer to keep them short so it keeps them healthy and will not over grow and harm them as they age. Older cats have a hard time shedding the layers of their claws.

I forgot to include this because for me it kind of fell under the term "proper use", but that may not be the case for everyone so thank you for adding! I do still stand with my opinion that I would rather not clip the nails of my outdoor cats, but I completely agree that it would be best to clip them for senior cats, especially if they don't climb as much anymore. My late senior cat remained healthy and was still a big climber to the age of 24, so we decided not to clip her nails, but we did keep a close eye on them when grooming her.

  • They always depict declawing cats as trimming in these videos, which is actually good for some cats (especially if they don't have a scratching post to keep their claws in good condition, or are older) when declawing cats is actually a much more disturbing surgical procedure in which the base of the toes are actually removed (in part anyway) to prevent the claws from growing back at al. Trimming a cat's claws is not dangerous if done safely and by a professional groomer or a vet, but isn't necessary if your cat is active and healthy. I imagine they probably depict it the way they do here to avoid disturbing content, but it kinda makes it look like trimming is super harmful when it isn't.

The only problem is they don‘t get a reward after the chase, so I like to hide treats around and then get her to chase the laser and find them, and it‘s a win win. She gets to burn energy and get super amped up for the hunt, and she also "catches prey" and is totally satisfied :)

My cats are outside garden cats who get brought in on night times so whenever I want to get them inside I just shake the laser toy and they come running in and I don’t always use it when they are all in and I think that’s more harsher than allowing them to play with the laser but they get treats after so all is forgiven. One of my cats is quite smart and has somehow taught herself to track the beam back and forth so if she loses it she looks at the pointer and follows the beam to find it again

Also when cats are climatized to something especially when they're very young as a kitten they're definitely more likely to like something different when they get older than lets say they were an adult cat you had picked up from a shelter.

  • 6:40 i got my first cat from my neighbor who had a cat that had kittens, the day before they moved out they had given out their kittens to anyone who would take them except for one which they wanted to keep but couldn't. At the last second they gave her to me and she grew up into an adult and became very closely connected to me. Well one day the original owners were able to move back into the area and wanted her back (politely, they didn't demand her back they asked nicely if there was any way i could part with her, they loved her and hated that they had to give her up) I gladly gave her back (i did and do miss her but i know shes happy) because i had taken in 2 stray cats by that time (one was hit by a car that nearly severed one of her paws and the other one just walked up to me in a parking lot and started rubbing on me and omfg he was the biggest softie sweetheart you have ever seen) so i gave her back to them. When i brought her over to their place her normal happy outgoing personality completely disappeared and she was so terrified that she didn't even try to run or hide she just completely buried her face into a corner of the couch and refused to move. We responded by placing her in their bedroom and closing the door most of the way giving her plenty of hiding places and peace and quiet to adjust to the new place without feeling trapped (door was open enough for her to walk in and out if she choose to). A week later we discovered my male cat had gotten her pregnant and she gave birth to 5 healthy kittens hence why she was so absolutely terrified in this new house. Now when i had all three cats i made sure to keep my male separate from my females whenever they were in heat (this was at the start of rona so lots of restrictions and in my town it was very difficult to schedule two spays and a neuter so i had them fully intact for 4 months) i guess this particular time she showed 0 signs of being in heat, my male showed 0 signs of being interested, and my females personality and the way she acted did not change at all plus she had no visible signs of pregnancy. Long story short nobody had any idea she was pregnant, moving her at that time was horrible for her stress levels and i feel absolutely horrid for what i unknowingly put her through. Luckily my toph is a tough girl so she ended up pulling through just fine and is happier then ever. Long story short whenever a cat is exposed to new territory suddenly it stresses them out because they spend their entire lives living with a near constant sense of safety and when that safety is suddenly removed cats go into full panic mode. Now my male cat Salem (completely black cat) couldnt care less, as long as i was near him he was happy, he liked to sleep in my lap and sit on my shoulder, even slept under the blanket with me in my bed. If he was awake he was near or on me somewhere, loved being held. That cat was the most laid back chill creature that has ever lived and the day he passed away destroyed me. I stopped functioning for a whole week after that and my life has never been the same since.

Secondly, using a laser pointer is not *teasing* the cat; it's interactive play, and cats love it. My cat will meow at me and paw at the laser pointer until I shine it for her, and we'll spend the next half hour with her chasing it all over the house and meowing for more when I get sick of it.

  • My cat absolutely loves her belly rubbed. Originally she would snap when touching her belly if she presented it, but cats need trust and time. After a while and proving that you won’t harm them in any way while in that vulnerable state, they will let you touch it because trust me they definitely enjoy getting a belly rub!!

  • What weird is my cat is the easy to deal with versus other cats at the vet, groomers and at home. But I'm gonna try that cat nip idea with his crate when going to and from the vets and groomers. His complaining in the crate just makes me feel bad. He's easy to handle but I don't like hearing him complaining. :( I just want him to feel even more comfortable lol. Gotta give my appreciation for his easy going attitude. Thanks for the tips and tricks!

  • My cat loves roughhousing, but every time we do I make sure she gets lots of cuddles and treats so she knows we're only joking around. Almost 10 years and she's never once been violent or scratched me :)
