Turning It Wet And Letting It Warp - It's My Most Favorite Cut Of Walnut, Too
In this video, I turn a bowl with a flared wide rim out of a wet piece of a Black Walnut. I cut his piece out of the log to be quarter-sawn, with sap wood, heart wood to the edge of the pith. Warping has already begun and will continue for many months, if not forever. This is one of my favorite cuts of blank to turn a bowl. I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed making it.
Have a nice day. 😊

Very nice bowl Rob🙂👍
Thank you, Paul. I really appreciate that!! 😊😊
beautiful bowl Rob :) that grain is stunning
Thank you, Claire. Yes you get it. That is why it is my favorite cut. 😊😊😊
Beautiful shape and wood figure. The oil makes the grain pop. When rough-turning with my Laguna 12-15, I run in low range to keep the rpm from bogging down from heavy cuts. This will give max motor torque at the slower spindle speed.
Thank you very much. 😊😊 also thank you for the reminder of the low range. I always forget to move the belt, but you are right it makes a big difference. 😉😊
Nice work. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Walt. Thank you for watching. 😊😊
That’s some of the most beautiful walnut I think I’ve ever seen. And I turn a TON of walnut. Absolutely perfect.
Thank you so much. I am very lucky to have this walnut. 😊😊
Great bowl but I would love to get my hands on similar grain. Almost drooling!
Thank you, Brad. 😊😊 I have good luck with cuts close to the pith, but not including it. And it’s walnut. 😉
Super nice, Rob Love it when it warps and doesn't crack
Thank you, Ward. 😊😊
Nice one Rob - lots of shavings to clear up now - thanks for the video
Thank you, Mike. 😊😊😊
Very nicely done Rob , sorry i thought i was already subbed to you buddy.

Stunning piece Rob 👏
Thank you, Mark. 😊😊
Beautiful wood. Love the ogee shape. Almost 1000 subs!
Thank you, Valerie. 😊 almost 😊😊
Is the plastic you put on the chuck to prevent marking? Seems like it would slip easier. Thank you, beautiful bowl.
Thank you for watching and asking. The plastic sheet is to protect the jaws from rusting and also to keep the jaws from staining. I saw Richard Raffan do it, he may know more. Take care. 😊😊
it is hard to stop the twisting and splitting.BUT,thats the nature of wood,an oak up here by Gladwin died of the wilt desease,When it fell we counted 123 rings,
Thank you for watching, Cliff. I appreciate it. Yes trees are awesome. 😊😊
Really nice work Rob C, Laser not working ?
Thank you, Douglas. 😊😊 no, I do not have a laser. 😊
Do you do anything to deal with the warping of the base as the bowl dries?
With this wood the base does not warp that way much. I do under cut the tenon when removing so only the outer edge of the base touches. Also I have removed the tenon and flattened the bottom after drying using a jam chuck on some pieces. Thanks for watching and asking.
Do laguna lathes stall that easily?
No. I should have put the lathe in low for max torque as it was wet and very heavy and out of balance. Thanks for watching.
Ya I don’t know. But I know it was bugging me a lot
@@dalezedo5937 sorry about that, Dale. I should take much lighter cuts too. It is mostly my fault. 🤦🏽♂️ ❤️
had high hopes , but no talking means no watching.
Thank you for giving it a try. I appreciate the feedback. Maybe one day I will add talking or voice over to my videos. Take care. 😊😊
