Girardi Hit by Slap Shot in the Back of the Head and Goes Down Hard 1/7/18 Lighting vs. Red Wings

Tampa Bay defenseman Dan Girardi suffered a scary injury in the second period of Tampa Bay's road trip finale in Detroit's Little Caesars Arena.
With the Red Wings trailing 2-1 and searching for the equalizer on the power play, Detroit's Martin Frk lined up a one-timer from the left circle that sailed and appeared to hit Girardi up high with 6:31 to go in the second period.
Girardi immediately fell face first onto the ice as trainers from both teams rushed out to his aid. With concerned Tampa Bay and Detroit players watching, Girardi remained down on the ice for a couple minutes before sitting up under his own power. Girardi skated off the ice with some help from Steven Stamkos and Victor Hedman and headed immediately back to the locker room.

  • You never like watching someone get hurt like this in a game, but what I do enjoy watching is how the players come together at an incident like this. These two teams hate each other. Big rivals! But in the end they are all hockey players and are in there for the same reason, hockey player to hockey player. In the end it's all respect.

  • When they show that much humanity, care, concern and respect that makes all these players and coaches alike real class acts. Most of the bigger rivals in almost any sport are actually great friends when not in a head-to-head competition. Even the fans showed class and decorum. Watching this gives me a sense of preside and respect even though I don’t know them. I guess in a world like we live in today with so much negativity it is nice to see gestures of kindness, concern for another human’s well-being and pure respect like this.

There is a level of intensity and toughness you are expected to bring against your opponent, but when someone goes down in certain ways, especially when a puck catches someone above the shoulders, you just stop and make sure your bro is ok, it's no fun chirping him if hes hurting and might not be able to play our game again.
