Girardi Hit by Slap Shot in the Back of the Head and Goes Down Hard 1/7/18 Lighting vs. Red Wings
Tampa Bay defenseman Dan Girardi suffered a scary injury in the second period of Tampa Bay's road trip finale in Detroit's Little Caesars Arena.
With the Red Wings trailing 2-1 and searching for the equalizer on the power play, Detroit's Martin Frk lined up a one-timer from the left circle that sailed and appeared to hit Girardi up high with 6:31 to go in the second period.
Girardi immediately fell face first onto the ice as trainers from both teams rushed out to his aid. With concerned Tampa Bay and Detroit players watching, Girardi remained down on the ice for a couple minutes before sitting up under his own power. Girardi skated off the ice with some help from Steven Stamkos and Victor Hedman and headed immediately back to the locker room.
You never like watching someone get hurt like this in a game, but what I do enjoy watching is how the players come together at an incident like this. These two teams hate each other. Big rivals! But in the end they are all hockey players and are in there for the same reason, hockey player to hockey player. In the end it's all respect.
The players just get it.
Agreed
Chrille9320 I watched it for the same reason
Agreed
Mrjokes92114life Not trying to copy you though.
I love how the Detroit players are helping the doctors get there faster
Thought about permanently making someone crippled they understand it’s a game and this guy safety is at stake Detroit also a class operation
well obviously theyre not gonna be like nah let them get there slowly
It's all about sportsmanship.
James Lopez I cried watching them help the doctors get there faster omg people don't have a ❤️😪so sweet
joker2008 I like your attitude
That was scary. It is a great sign he skated off the ice on his own power. Detroit players and fans in attendance you guys are class. Go Bolts
Ernesto Vega I agreed with you up until the last sentence.Boo bolts
Yeah not like a certain shitty town in Canada *cough* during a nba game *cough* fuck those fans.
@@aidencampbell9120 okay buddy they were cheering cause Ibaka got fouled not because of Durant's injury you Toronto-hater
One tough dude...
That's a damn tough man. The guy has intentionally taken a beating for 15 years to sacrifice his body for the team. Hopefully that wasn't the last time he has the opportunity to do it. What a man.
Peter T I hope it is the last time he does it, enough brain injuries can cause some serious issues, the guy is an absolute champ regardless however.
Gerardi finished that season plus one more, retiring after the 2018-19 season with 1070 career games (927 regular season, 143 playoffs) with 64 goals and 236 assists over 13 NHL seasons.
@@seamus1956 Thanks for the update on Gerardi.
I watched Girardi play in the AHL for Hartford
Something I love about hockey is that the camaraderie is strong, they’re in full out brawls other times. Look at how quickly Frk and the other players got help for their opponent.
Girardi is a first class man and player. Hope he is ok.
via Joe Smith, beat writer for the Lightning: "He's ok".

I remember being at the game and it was insane how quiet it got so quickly.
At the end of the day it's just a game and a human life is way more important than winning.
At the end of the day it's just a game and a human life is way more important than winning.
Sportsmanship, when sincere, is a beautiful thing to watch. Two seconds after the hit and the Wings players are getting trainers there as fast as possible in exactly the same way they would for their own teammates.
If you watch close enough one of the Red Wings players immediately waves for training staff to come out. Awesome sportsmanship on this aspect. True respect for the wave of the training staff to come out.
It’s so awesome how both teams come together as one...❤️
I did notice when I was watching this game and again now that it was only Wings players that were helping the trainers get to Girardi. Not to say that his own team mates didn't want to but it shows the sportsmanship of the Wings.
Not to take anything away from the Wings, but i think the Bolts team were so shellshocked they were just froze by what happened, while the Wings team just reacted in pure adrenaline. Regardless was definitely respect and instinct to just help a fellow living member
No my friend that's all hockey players
They were just shocked
Wings fan here, but I hope Girardi is doing well. The Wings and Lightning maybe are in a rivalry but we are still human and to see shots like that to the face is really disturbing. Hearts to you.
Mike Wright it's not really a rivalry when Tampa has beaten detroit 14 of the last 15 games. You're probably one of those michigan fans that think state is your rival when you've lost 8 in 10 years to sparty
BAHAHAHAHHA
pHoTyPHoToN and you’ve had 25 years in the league and won one cup over a decade ago. Give me a fucking break 😂😂
pHoTyPHoToN Quit being a dumbass.
SkankHunt 42 You too.
Geez... I'm an avalanche fan and to see the red wings players help the staff to the injured player is priceless... I love hockey players because they are good people...if the world was like them we would be a better world and this is the evidence...
Reminds me of one year how during a rangers vs flyers game a ranger took a shot and got hurt and the flyers fans cheered about him getting hurt. Wings fans and players show true class and sportsmanship here
Detroit fans have good class getting that quite
Yeyy
whenever someone gets hurt in hockey, the first thing i imagine is how scared their parents are
iUnicornx and their wives
Definitely. No team wants to see their teammates gets injured. That was a scary sight.
These guys are rivals.... And the camaraderie is legendary!
When they show that much humanity, care, concern and respect that makes all these players and coaches alike real class acts. Most of the bigger rivals in almost any sport are actually great friends when not in a head-to-head competition. Even the fans showed class and decorum. Watching this gives me a sense of preside and respect even though I don’t know them. I guess in a world like we live in today with so much negativity it is nice to see gestures of kindness, concern for another human’s well-being and pure respect like this.
Hate to see it happen to any player, you really hate to see it to one of you're own, even though he is on a new team now! Get well soon Giaradi 💝 from NYR Fan here! Once a Ranger, Always a Ranger we bleed that Red white and blue. 🇺🇸👍 God Bless All.
I love how the red wings started helping and helped the coach onto the ice
Remember when they didn’t wear helmets?
Yeah Girardi would've been dead if he wasn't wearing a helmut
Helmetless goalies. Wow!
@@moneyindabank if not dead, badly injured at least
@@go4thlingen Ikr, that's freaking insane nowadays Vulcanized rubber is hard enough before it's frozen prior to a game and then there's the speed that those pucks are potentially going when they're coming at your head
Chemo Boy wait what !!! that was a thing?😕🙁😨😧
Detroit hockey fans are very respectful. In this situation
I like how the Red Wings helped out the TB trainer.
I love that the opposing team skated the medic to the ice
Anyone else watching this after martin frk blasted a 109mph Slapshot in the AHL Skills competition?
Absolute miracle... Thank God he's OK...🙏
I feel the doctors And players do an amazing job getting help to the injured player. Great job to all involved.. god Bless all the players that they stay safe. Prayers and love to all.💙🙏💙
There are no tougher or more courageous athletes in the world than hockey players. That takes huge guts. Glad he's okay.
Damn lucky to be alive. An Australian cricketer died a few years ago when he got hit by the cricket ball in a similar spot (Phil Hughes for anyone wanting to know). Here's hoping he heals well!
I love how fast wings got the trainers out there >.
At the time, when he was with the Rangers, I always respected his sacrifice against shots but he frustrated me with his accidental deflections in net and screenings etc. But after he left I learned the hard way he was the defensive anchor. I had no idea until today that he held the record for blocked shots. He was great. Wish he won a cup with us. But I read Gallant might want to get him as an assistant and that’d be freaking awesome
I like how 4 red wings rush the lighting medic to the injured player .. Good Job ..
Jesus, that shot laid him out... I'm glad that at least this didn't end his career or give him neurological damage or anything, he played another entire season before retiring. Hope he's doing well.
I wish him all the best and lots of health and happiness and love ❤️
I will never get more about Fairplay. I continue to repeat that some Fairplay conduct are more spectacular than fight and hate. See Detroit players beating stick on the ice, Detroit supporters clap their hands... Is amazing.
Respect 👍👏👏
im a rangers fan and always loved girardi was so sad when he left good to see hes ok hes a true man
I remember watching the game. I teared up. Very scary.
The joke regarding Hockey is that fans go to see a fight and sometimes a game breaks out. To prove that is BS, did you see the opposition players basically carrying the doc out on to the ice to get him there asap.
One of the scariest possible injuries that can happen in hockey. That could have been deadly
Scary... Just flat out scary. Glad he was able to get skate off.
Love how both teams help out T’T
Now that’s what I like to see! More of this please
Notice something about our great game? There is a level of intensity and toughness you are expected to bring against your opponent, but when someone goes down in certain ways, especially when a puck catches someone above the shoulders, you just stop and make sure your bro is ok, it's no fun chirping him if hes hurting and might not be able to play our game again.
Hats off to the doctor for rushing over so fast hes falling
What great sportsmanship!
Something like this recently happened at Russia to a 19 year old player, RIP TIMUR
much respect to wings fans
Detroits got some class after all
my apologies for not topic comment- but I like how is doctor "delivered " to patients by skating him) he just slide)). so sweet and fust!!
Never heard an nhl game this silent before. Hope he's ok.
Ever watched a Coyotes game?
There's one on KZhead of a Flyers game where The Goalie collapses right before the faceoff
Major respect to Detroit players. Very classy.
Girardi is a warrior
I saw the title and I was like noooo
Very classy but on another note did anyone else notice that AA is wearing the nhl 100 logo patch on his arm but none of the other players have one on for Detroit
Did he make it through
Lol yeah he ended up being fine, even played another season after this. He has his own podcast now called "Block Party with Dan Girardi," and they use the radio announcer's call of this moment as the intro sound byte to their show. Girardi has a very dry sense of humor so that's the exact thing he would find funny
even crazier watching this knowing Martin Frk broke Chara's slapshot record recently.. damn
WHO REMEMBER GAME WITHOUT COMMENTATORS ?? iI LOVED IT !
Why does the announcer talk like he is broadcasting a golf match
Hockey Town ikr
I felt the pain only by reading the title
Fastest shot in hockey history right there.
i am a tampa fan i rember this like it was yesterday scarest thing ever
With Frk’s cannon I would never block his shot
Well Dan is going to sacrifice his body for anything. The guy has done this a thousand times for 15 years.
Had this happen to me major concussion not right for months.
I do t care what anyone says these hockey guys are not only tough but have balls of steel, some of them slap shots have serious heat behind them
Rangers fan here and Girardi was always one of my favorites. This guy gives up everything every time he is on the ice. Prayers that he is okay and for a quick recovery Dan Girardi a true warrior.
Bradley Updyke I'm also a Rangers fan and I loved Dan Girardi! He's a heart and soul player who gave everything he had and sacrificed to help us win! I miss him :( 💙
Who's the golf announcer?
That is the FOX Sports Sun feed for the Lightning and on the call was Rick Peckham and Brian Engblom.
peckham is a legend
i flew by watching this... and im a fkn year late
What a legend man takes an puck to the head, and gets up like nothing...hope ur doing well
You can't say he gets up like nothing when he's groggy as shit and stayed down for a couple of minutes.
It's truly hard to believe that not only did players before the 1980s not always wear helmets, some goaltenders as late as the 1960s did not wear masks. There are fewer serious head injuries in hockey than in basketball and football - a testament to the excellence of the equipment.
Martin Frk's shot is the one that caught Girardi, and this year at the AHL All-Star Game he broke the record for hardest shot at 109 mph. Frk's got an arm on him. Happy to see Girardi skating off after that.
Вот это уважение льду... Все прекратили игру раньше свистка судьи! Надеюсь с хоккеистов всё впорядке!
A slapshot literally becomes a slapshot and that puck slaps him in the back of the head
Glad he is ok, hell of a shot he took, miss that defense on my no defense ranger team, sighhhh
The funk he skate away???? Tuff Guinea!
Why are the Red Wings always involved in these kind of things !?
Hope he’s okay
The second announcer sounds like he's calling a golf game.
Lol ikr
Girardi= One Tough Son of a Gun
That was like getting hit with a solid rubber slug from a riot shotgun...my head hurts just from watching it. Hope Giradi was ok after that.
fuckin beauty man rocket of a man's man. what a guy.
Poor Giardi I hope he is okay
Wow, that's just so dangerous. Thank God he was okay. Not a fan by no means for Tampa, but I don't like seeing anyone hurt.
Scary since Frk now has the hardest shot
Im a long time ranger fan dan giardi been taking a beating since forever....but was some scary shit...glad hes ok...
*fast paced game* *silence………*
How has nobody died from hockey..
I really need news from the Lightning, being a Lightning fan. But whatever team you support, you have to hope he is okay after that. Saw that live on TV and almost went into cardiac arrest.
Nijae Thompson go to NHL.com for the latest news. He’s doing just fine and is listed as a game time decision for tonight.
TBLightningFights That isn't exactly what I wanted to hear. If he's a game time decision, he could miss out and only Callahan would be our shot-blocker.
It looked like it was under the back of his ear. A tough place to take a shot.
Man.. Frk has a BOMB too..
Cam D. Can’t aim for shit
Not lying, this is exactly why I would never play hockey. My BIGGEST fear
They be alright they get paid all that money
love how detroit comes to his aid, his lackey teammates just stand there like "guhhhhhhhhhhhhh wut happen?" not even his own coach came to check.
He’ll be thinking twice next time he tries that.
scary
Tough man
probably skated his next shift
Very scary 😨😨
I’ll tell ya, I’ve played in many leagues and that is one of the worse hits to get.. Glad he was ok.
If that was the face we would be watching the nhl with full cages on
No. There have been lots of players who have taken a slap shot to the face
