Woodturning - Australian Dragon Skin? 2024 is The Year of The Dragon!
Woodturning - In this video I use the fridge method to achieve color separation when combining two colors of epoxy and using some banksia pods from Australia. The banksia pods give a dragon skin look to the piece so that's where the title comes from. Please like and share with your friends, thanks!

Who else likes hearing a video begin with, “I don’t really know what I’m doing with there, so let’s get going.* 🥳
Lol. Thank you very much!
Pro tip: Be careful NEVER to confuse your bottles of CA glue with the water bottles in your fridge. My lips are sealed! Amazing work! Thanks, Jim!
Don’t knock it until you try it, hahaha. Thank you!
LOL! @@SpragueWoodturning
LMFAO 😅😅😅
LOL
You have certainly done justice to a fabulous native Australian tree. The piece looks spectacular. Would sit proudly on display in any gallery.
Thank you very much!
Any Aussie would be proud to display this.
Awesome! Thanks!
Oh WOW! Love the old man Banksia, they are native to us with gorgeous flowers. That fuzz you refer to is the old man's beard 😄Native birds love them. Thank you so much for turning with banksia pods Jim.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Those Banksia pods would make interesting night lamps.
My Dad made a lot of items out of Banksia. He said you did an amazing job, and I agree 100%. You have inspired him to pull his tools out and do some more work even though he is in his 90s and has trouble walking. Dad made his own tools out of old files.
Great! Thank you very much!
I like to watch you work. 😁 I'm 71 and thinking about trying my hand at what your doing. Thanks for the incentive! 😎
Go for it! Thank you very much!
Ok, this has got to be one of the coolest pieces you've made! Between the whirls in the resin, the globe shape, and the pattern of the pods, it's just really freakishly gorgeous!!
Thank you very much!
My mouth LITERALLY dropped open when you added finish!!!!! BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!! ✌🏻
Thank you very much!
I just discovered your channel a couple of days ago, and I already watched hours of your videos. I'm not a Wood Turner. I just build fishing rods, but I absolutely love your channel. You sir are a real artist.
Welcome aboard! Thank you very much!
This is the second of your videos I've seen. I must say I am totally amazed! I loved the Banksia Pods so much that I recommended my friend buy some as she hunts for the most unusual plants to grow in her backyard. You are the King of Turns, but she is the Queen of Plants. I want to say I am truly enjoying these. and look forward to seeing many more of them! Thanks for helping me relax after a very stressed-out day!
Welcome aboard!
Thank you very much!
Seeing a Banksia in full bloom is beutiful, you have realy bought it to life & done our native flora proud. The Dragon Skin effect is great.
Thank you so much!
You should send him some banksia seeds to see if he could grow one at his new home.
@@DawnShipley1977I was thinking that! I am in Texas and wonder if they would grow here. I looked it up - the flowers are beautiful, and the pods sure are cool. I wonder if they sell the seeds around here, I’ve never seen them.
@@greenmanjnj that is because, as of right now, they only grow in Australia.
@@DawnShipley1977 I noticed that, but I wonder if it would grow here. I would love to give it a try. Maybe there is something in the Aussie soil, water, air, … who knows, but I’d love to see if I can find some seeds. By the way, what a gorgeous, diverse country Australia is. All kinds of flora and fauna that only exist there. A visit is definitely on my bucket list!!
Another home run. Who knew green floated? The pods add a great texture. Thank you as always. Stay well. Designer Epoxy
Thank you! Cheers!
"Who new green floated?" Apparently purple is heavier than green. 😆
WoW!!...just Wow!! Stunningly beautiful!!
Thank you so much!
Amazing, those Banksia pods certainly look so cool with the contrasting purple. Love it. I find your videos so interesting. Thank you.
Glad you like them!
That's a beautiful and unique bowl. The gold banksia and purple resin go particularly well together. A very nice piece.
Thank you very much!
If you are not the top artist in KZhead then you are in the top 2! Simply beautiful bowl, like all the others. Great time spent watching you work, the way you explain makes it seem easy yet we know better. Keep up the great work.
Wow! Thank you very much!
I think this bowl is so intriguing! I hope to see more projects with the pods. They came out so amazing!! Designer Apoxy!! You are so talented!!❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
I have noticed in other wood turning videos I catch, they duct tape the piece where the steady rest wheels rest. That might prevent your piece from heating up, or at least get rid of the wheel mark. Or it's just needing one more day to cure because you used the fridge. Successful experiment, beautifully finished 💖
Yes, I’ve been taping them lately and having seen any problems. Thanks
This is my all time favorite turn. Not because it's purple ( which is a plus) but because of the shape, and the design is stunning.you did good on this one as usual.
Thank you very much!
This one is truly spectacular! Don't think I'd ever get tired of seeing these pods turned. I love this form as well. Thanks Jim for another great video 😊
Thank you very much!
New fan from Australia 🇦🇺🦘 absolutely beautiful what you’ve done with some of our natives.
Welcome aboard! Thank you very much!
❤ i love these style of pots with that weird wood pod, they are all stunningly gorgeous and very beautiful this one is fantastic i really love it.
Thanks so much!
Cool piece, as with any experiments you always learn something. I think the pods look great, thanks again Jim.
Thank you! Cheers!
Your a Master at your Craft Sir👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🫶🏼❤️🥰. I sincerely enjoy watching your videos. I’ve seen other wood turners. Your craftsmanship reminds me of the loving care my dad gave to his wood projects.
So nice of you! Thank you very much!
Jim - This is another wonderful example of the combination of Your skill and imagination!! The difference in the bowl with the inside lit up and without it is night and day. I absolutely love it. These pods are truly a unique resource for You to use. More pleas.
Thank you very much! More to come!
It's absolutely an awesome and unique piece. Very nice, can't wait to see your next project. Keep on turning. Designer epoxy
Thank you very much!
Amazing piece Jim! Take care, see yall next Friday!
Thank you very much!
Absolutely beautiful - glitter purple and crystal purple are two of my favorite designer epoxy colors! Another stunning piece of art!
Thank you so much!
This is one of all-time favourites! Absolutely gorgeous!!!!
Thank you very much!
The color of this piece is absolutely beautiful! The pattern of the pods is amazing! Love this!
Thank you very much!
Another beautiful end result. I love how this turned out using these seed pods. Dragon Bowl is awesome ❤️❤️For Mardi Gras colors it’s purple, green and gold.🎉🎉🎉
Thank you very much!
I watched some of your videos lately, and I would have to say this is the best one yet.
Thanks very much!
Purple & Gold are our school colors. I'm in love with this bowl. It's perfect ❤
Thank you very much!
Absolutely gorgeous! I love the pods, the colour of the epoxy and the organic shape.
Thank you so much!
The seeds are removed in nature, by a cool burn bushfire - the smoking helps the pods open & the seeds fall easily then & propagation is quite easy. They prefer a black sand seaside aspect, though grow coastal in well drained sandy soils. High nectar producing for bees & birds. The purple was the greatest choice for contrast with colour of the pods & the green was wasted - just not necessary - really lovely item - beautiful! Think about some grasstree timber - it's special too.
It’s on my list as well. Thanks
Those banksia pods with that epoxy resin are spectacular!
Thank you so much!
Good glory, that silver shift is gorgeous! Those pods are incredible as well! Another week, another beauty!
Thank you!
This piece is amazing. You are a true artist.

Thank you very much!
I really like the lizard skin look. Those pods are wild. Great job. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎
They certainly are, thanks!
Hi back watching a few I have missed. When you had the light on the outside, some of the purple looked like there were dragons coming up out of there. Very beautiful
Thank you very much!
This is my favorite piece on the channel so far. What a stunner.
Thank you so much!
Another great turning Jim. Great piece.. Great color choices.
Thank you kindly
Your Dinasaur skin looking vessel using the Banksia pods is beautiful, although the green color didn't show up so well it really looks great Designer Epoxy colors are fantastic ! Keep Turning Nice Work

I love the effect of the banksia pods. Dragon skin is a perfect name.
Thanks very much!
Wow, I just started watching your station yesterday and I tell you I have never seen anything is beautiful is this. The underwater under ocean blend that you did was gorgeous, but this one takes the cake. Simply beautiful I can’t wait to see what you do next.❤❤❤
Welcome aboard! Thank you very much!
So happy you featured the titanium in this piece - I ❤❤❤it! The combination of the black walnut and the hypershift silver is perfection. The shape you chose shows them both off wonderfully!
Thank you very much!
Wow, just wow. I have no words to describe how beautiful this is!
Thank you! 😊
I have seen many banksia pod turnings. This is, for me, the most creative and beautiful of them all!
Wow, thank you!
Out of this world , Designer Epoxy
Thank you very much!
Designer epoxy. Two words, simply beautiful.
Thank you! Cheers!
Im not sure you could have knocked this one out of the park any more than you did on this one. I really like this piece. As a woodworker myself, ( i have never used a lathe before just to be clear) I appreciate the talent and sill that goes into your pieces. As I have said before, i a not a turner nor do i own a lathe, but i learn a heck of a lot from your videos.
Thanks so much!
These pieces keep getting better and better
Thank you very much!
Jim this is an absolutely amazing piece. Your tool work and explanation of the issues you faced was spot on. Thank you
Thank you very much!
Those banksia pods sure do look cool in your piece. If most people were walking through the woods and see these things laying on the ground, they would never guess how you could use them to make such a beautiful piece. Any yet . . . you can . . . and you did!!! I love the color. Great bowel. You are very talented. God Bless!!!
Thank you very much!
This one is absolutely stunning, it is definitely one of the top 5 in my opinion. The beautiful reptile skin look with the colour is just WOW ❤
Thank you very much!
That piece is going to be beautiful 😊
Thank you very much!
That bowl is absolutely gorges! Mother Natures artwork combines with the epoxy and your turning skills are fantastic!!
Thank you very much!
The epoxy is awesome. I love the tones of the color. The Australian seed pods are so unique. I would like to look at it for hours. This is a very beautiful bowl.
Thank you so much!
Aussie here, I will never look at a Banksia Pod the same again, that is gorgeous!
Thank you very much!
The Dragon skin piece is absolutely gorgeous.
Thank you so much!
Those Banksia pods are bizarre looking things but, they sure make for outstanding looking projects! I love this piece. The dragon skin look is really attractive! Thank, Jim for this unusual project!!❤
I totally agree! Thank you very much!
Jim, as always, your resin work is beautiful, but the natural beauty and gold hue of the banksia pods are the star of this piece. Absolutely beautiful.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful work! I'm a quilter and your video just popped up and I'm so glad it did! Wow! I'm going keep watching- I'm already addicted to the reveal!
Welcome aboard! Thank you very much!
From this side of the camera the purple looks like a brilliant blue and the Dragon. Skins a golden sheen. The best one to date 💚🤗
Thank you very much!
Absolutely gorgeous results. I am a tad trypophobic so I was not sure I could watch this through to the end, but the exposed "dragon skin" is truly beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This one is so beautiful. It reminds me of a prom dress I once had - sleeve- and strapless emerald x-shape, floor length with a big amethyst bow on the left side. I love the combination of this two gems' colors.
Thank you very much!
Afternoon Jim. Thanks again for your creative mastery of your art of combining designer epoxy and wood/ pods/resin shavings. Truely enjoy everything you make and share with us every Friday! 😎
Many thanks!
That is another beautiful project. The colors of the Designer Epoxy and the texture of the banksia pods work great together.
Yes it does! Thank you very much!
This is absolutely beautiful! It really makes me want a lathe to try making something with my favorite color and epoxy. Thank you!
Go for it! Thank you very much!
Ok! New favorite. The Designer Epoxy and color selection nailed it. Beautiful piece.
