This is the moment wild dogs try to hunt down klipspringers that are cornered on the edge of a cliff. Will these antelopes, and their hooves, keep their cool?
Read the full article here: latestsightings.com/single-po...
On the 22nd of February 2022, the @MalaMalaGameReserve rangers were very fortunate to share a once-in-a-lifetime sighting with their guests. Wild Dogs trying to hunt antelope on the edge of a cliff! Guide Gareth van Rooyen tells the story.
"This pack of 21 Wild Dog had been on the Reserve for the past week and on this particular day were settling down in the Mlowathi River, North of its confluence with the Sand River. Rangers had sighted the dogs on an afternoon safari, probably on the hunt for something to eat - as it is not uncommon for Wild Dogs to hunt twice a day. "
"They encountered Klipspringers (small antelope) and cornered these poor victims on these massive rocks. One of the rangers who was filming, Michael Botes, has actually witnessed these very same Klipspringers go through the same ordeal with a different pack of Wild Dogs before! Steff McWilliam was also filming in the sighting and both of these guides could not believe what was happening!"
"It was mostly the young Wild Dogs who were trying to get to the Klipspringers." Whereas the adults were not showing much interest in this game of cat and mouse - or in this case - Dog and Antelope.
"Now for Klipspringers, as daunting it may be having these predators in their habitat, they were designed by Mother Nature to live in rocky outcrops. Their hooves are very pointy, allowing them to be very nimble and agile on rocks such as these. And living in habitats like these usually assists in avoiding the bigger predators."
"What makes this sighting utterly unbelievable is the fact that Wild Dogs are not known to be climbers of any sort. Their paws are not at all designed for what we witness here! The fact that the Dogs did not slip or fall is incredible in itself."
"This really had everyone on the vehicle, hearts pumping as they were anxiously waiting to see what happens next. But eventually, the Wild Dogs lost interest and moved on. Where later they did actually hunt one of Africa's slightly bigger antelope, impala."
Have a look at MalaMala KZhead Channel, to see what happens in their reserve.

@@peterhenderson9331 😭😭😭😭
Yes, good thing it wasn't a leopard chasing them.
Yeah I know it sucks but it’s nature, klipspringers would over populate and eat all the plants if there were no dogs, hyenas, lions, or leopards to kill them, then the klipspringers would starve and that would be much slower and more painful, plus the dogs have to eat too
@@nojorooney we understand how nature works my guy.
A valuable lesson learnt from the humble antelopes - never panic even if you see your end in front of your eyes !
The most incredible thing in this video is that the Antelope actually was able to calculate that the wild dogs will come close but still won't be able to catch it.
those are weird-looking hogs
It wasn't able to calculate anything...
@@zejdland Yeah really. Those antelopes had lady luck smile on them with that position... but they didn't calculate anything hahaha
@@donarthiazi2443 you’re taking the statement too literally. Did the antelopes perform mathematical calculations to surmise the angle at the edge of the cliff was near impossible for the dogs to reach? Probably not. But they instinctively knew the edge gave them the best chance of survival and they never moved a muscle. Even under immense pressure from the dogs.
@@dantegood2195 look again the one got very nervous but they must know how to escape and where to go and hang out

You act as if they had a choice.
Yerrrrrr,me too.
I’m impressed with both parties here. The wild dogs realised the reward wasn’t worth the risk and the antelopes demonstrated immense patience and calmness under pressure. 🙌🏾
Wrong. A 7ft drop wouldnt hurt the dogs at all. If they would have just slid dwn the rock, all the antelope would fall and the dogs would be okay, plus have dinner.
@@Ricky_Island I woulda been one of the dogs at the back "accidentally," bumping into one of the dogs that was inches away sending them both to the bottom lol. I probably wouldn't make for a popular member of the pack. 😆
@@braveheart4603 strategic mistake
Yep, but I guess the dogs haven't had any practice at a nearly vertical slide so they aren't brave enough to be comfortable trying. That & or they don't have great depth perception.
I think if the dogs went for the antelope they would have bump on them after the slide and they would have lose all their balance, those are not cat, they could even fall on their back or broke a leg/ankle. For a wild life animal that dangerous
Damn man I couldn't take normal breath until the end of the video. I was so nervous that they will catch them. watching this was like taking a penalty at 90 minute. So happy they made it.

It's just incredible! How did those Antelopes retain their nerves cool is a great lesson for us. Don't be panic and you will see the storm will be over for just few minutes.
It's an evolutionary adaptation
even at rest wild animals have extremely high levels of adrenaline in their system compared to humans. to be wild is to live with constant stress. They are perfectly equipped to manage these situations. on the other hand, Humans panic because our adrenaline system rarely tops out, and when it does we usually aren't ready to handle it. it's only impressive because humans live soft and sheltered lives.

The clever antelopes found a vantage point to survive and dogs too were smart enough to avoid nasty fall. Every business should have similar vantage point to survive and at the same time should avoid unnecessary risks like those dogs. An inspiring lessons for start-ups.
It’s quite a boss level move really. The dog knows you fall off that cliff and you could have serious injuries. I just can’t believe how close the margins are to escape and capture!
Not only does the dog know it, but the antelope must have some awareness of the dog's physical limitations too. A loophole in the dog's attack that the antelope expertly exploits. Know thy enemy!
@@veeganboy exactly my though also. To just stay put like that not even flinch when the dogs are really close, has to mean they somehow understand they are unreachable for the dogs. They are somehow aware i's a very risky situation for the wild dogs to gamble. Amazing how an animal can adept this kind of defendning mechanism. Usually prey are panicing and just run or in some rare cases show aggression and fight back.
is it even that high? Looks like they could jump off and still be fine
@@voltaquake It's not really that high but the dog is facing downward and its legs are thin. A fall under these circumstances might end up with a broken leg or some bad injury.

This is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen on KZhead, or frankly anywhere. How did the antelopes get there in the first place, that exact spot where they could reach, but the wild dogs couldn’t? I would love to see how the antelopes get back out of there. If any of the dogs had decided to just slide down, it could have taken one of the antelopes down with it and probably (I think) not been injured by the fall. But obviously none wanted to take that chance. People are saying they are amazed at the calmness of the antelopes. Yeah, but then again they had to be calm. One tiny misstep means falling, possibly getting injured, and right into the waiting mouths below.
These are klipspringer, so getting back out of there would be no problem for them. They live on rocks and rock faces

I don't see much calmness here. In fact, they keep looking around nervously. That little one almost slipped off several times, one time he almost started to run. An incredible display of intelligence from the dog. He could have jumped into him and knocked him off, but he had the foresight to know that he could potentially suffer a serious injury in the fall and no longer hunt.
