@@iUssehPut Gareth in charge of that side if he was 20 years older and he'd have done nothing either. When Ferguson, Benitez, Mourinho and Wenger were at each others throats constantly and Chelsea, arsenal, Liverpool and utd players were up against each other they admitted themselves they didn't want to speak to each other after matches and the managers wouldn't want them speaking to each other either when they went away with England. Nowadays the players are hugging and kissing each other after London derbies and there's no needle with the managers either. Players have said that both Sven and Gareth are nice guys so if they're both good man managers football being more friendly in England is the only reason Gareth's done better. He's had much easier draws too and still failed to beat top sides like every other England manager.

@@Stifler-ov5qy your interpretation does not make sense. as a coach you can only do so much with the set of players that you have. no one expects a coach to turn water to wine. even pep guardiola wouldn't be able to take this current Welsh team to a final. Deschamps had a good set of players and was able to get to the euro's final, World Cup final twice - winning one of them. Southgate has a good set of players and plays boring football and hasn't achieved anything with them. He has only won 7 games out of the last 23 games against the top 10 countries. They are not the same

It is possible for teams to win in spite of the manager, Barry Switzer and the 95 cowboys come to mind - but I’d be bloody surprised if a team without an existing culture of winning like England could manage it

I just dont understand. Going to the euros with one of the best teams but having a coach who probably has a single digit approval rating.
While Southgate is a huge part of the problem, ignoring his FA Yes Man attitude (his flag comments were so 'diplomatic' that it made me think in another life Southgate was a politician) there really isn't any exceptional coaches in general in the England set up. The assistant in Steve Holland; not the greatest playing CV... The attacking coach is Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (who I believe shares with Steve Holland) and therefore they have to shoulder some of the blame. Because how can England have such great attacking players but the only person to get a shot on target in the 2nd half of the match against Brazil was John Stones? I understand what Southgate is trying to do and to a degree I understand it because he was a defender (for those who are confused or don't understand, I get it, but the idea is 'don't lose at all cost and win by one goal, unless it's against small/weak teams, then try not to lose and if you score great!') but it is frustrating and we've seen it for years now. Even when England win 7-0 or 10-0 or 5-0 or whatever you feel like the score flatters the team. The same stuff happens every game. GK to defender, defender to wing back, wing back to one of the double pivot, one of those back to wing back, wing back to winger, winger runs forward, is checked, stops, passes back to wing back, who passes to midfielder who passes it to the other side. Over and over. Or in another term 'crab passing'. Yes, I fully understand the theory behind the tactics, but in tournament football, a team defending deep doesn't particularly care if you're doing 500 passes in 10 mins because sooner or later, you'll misplace one, miscontrol one and they can counter. Look at how Hungary spanked England 4-0 (worst home loss in 60 years or something, people don't mention this enough) because they played to their strengths. If Southgate (who is essentially doing the Sven tactic) of trying to win every game 1-0 or 2-1 or something and it actually results in a trophy, nobody will care. The issue is it hasn't and probably won't. England are only in the favourites category because they have the top Bundesliga scorer, top La Liga scorer, 2nd top EPL scorer (and many more of the Top 10). But that doesn't really mean anything. As we were shown with Watkins, he cannot lead the line. Kane drops deep and tries to feed the wingers. The same issue happened against North Macedonia iirc where Watkins started and they had to bring Kane on to make the score 'respectable'. Many fans would rather England played attractive attacking football that makes use of the attacking talent and lose than try to boreball a way to a trophy and that's purely because of years of boreball that hasn't given anything. As it is, I have a feeling that England might even struggle in the groups if they play like they did against Brazil. Maybe the England players have their minds on their club and don't really want to try, but to me, I think a better manager would be playing to England's strengths. But, again, I don't have the data. Maybe their performance analysts and data readers show this is the best thing to do.

I'd expect overhyping from your average pundit these days, but I'm quite surprised at how deluded Goldbridge is on England's chances. We had basically the same squad at the World cup and could only score a penalty against France who, despite what people assert, controlled the game. It seems people are overrating our squad more than ever now. It's really unbalanced, with a few stars, but that does not make a tournament winning team, especially when we lack the ruthless winning mentality all the other big Euro nations have. How can Goldbridge say that England have a better squad than France and Portugal?? Yes Southgate is rubbish but you can't blame everything on the manager.
How is the squad overrated? Bellingham foden kane and saka are among the best players in world football. This excuse is how Southgate has avoided criticism from the media and fanboys for 5 years

MARK IS SPOT ON - SOUTHGATE IS BORING AND DULL AND THAT IS EXACTLY HOW IS TEAMS PLAY England boring dull underachievers. A team reflects it's manager, Klopp - full on agressive with a touch of class but can fight and snarl. Pep - Classy but clever, can be firm but not agressively rude. Dyche - an agressive guy with a defensive attitude not got a lot of attacking knowledge - thats Everton for you. Apply it to any manager and the team reflects the manager. England will under achieve AGAIN under Southgate.
England has a rubsh football culture. England fans are risk averse, they reject any modern ideology. They don’t want to take more risks, playing less defensive capable attacking profile players to outscore their opponents. Instead, they cheer when they make a good tackle. English managers don’t believe that TACTICS is at least 90% of what it matters. They don’t have a step by step methodic approach. They can’t micromanage every positioning and movements of their players like a chess game. They park the bus. They are boring, direct and defensive. They prefer physical, athletic, hardworking players, rather than skillful, technical, creative players with good teamwork.

The mangers don’t pick their most technical players. The tactics is fossil tactics and those technical players will not fit in well.

Your last point does hit the nail on the head. England have it easy against weaker teams. Heck uefa and fifa always gift them weak teams in the qualifiers. They should be having more tougher qualifying groups just to test themselves against better teams. Is it not more satisfying to make it through to the finals of a tournament by scraping through a tough qualifying group over a group where virtually all the opponents are a walk in the park?
Southgate coaches the same way he played. Clueless at the international level. 31% win ratio against the worlds top ten. Expect not to get past semis at best at Euro's.

To all those fans supporting Southgate please answer this question: would you take him at your club? I think we know the vast majority would say absolutely not. The MSM are desperate to ruin United even further. Wonder if Jurgen can put in a good word for Gareth as he’s going at the end of the season. Southgate looks the better fit as he will use his an array of coaching talents to ensure Pool are challenging to stay in the PL.

Sometimes, it is best to think something out fully before actually posting. Ole is a former Man utd player with legendary status at Man utd, who was given the job after an initial interim role. Southgate never played for Man utd and can be no way comparible to Moyes, LVG, Jose Mourinho or Eric Ten hag.😂

I don't think we've played a top side in those competitions. In the euros the only one that came close was a German side who fell at group stages in two world cups. He's played a lot of very average teams then lost to anyone half decent. Got knocked out of nations league group having hardly scored from open play. Best squad we've ever seen, terrible coach

There was many great players but a lack in midfield of players who tracked back, we had ledley king that was used but injured alot, those times were seeing how we can push all the best players on the pitch regardless of position. @briansam5681 Red Bull have clear lines between who runs each club. The owner isn't in charge of the football side of the clubs they own, there's separate people running the each club for them with no ties to the other clubs. We have Ratcliffe who made it perfectly clear to everyone he and Sir Brailsford are running the football side of United and they've been running the football side of Nice for a few years now. That's what the actual law prohibits, one person who has control over football operations at multiple clubs. But this is what the Glazers and Ratcliffe signed up for with full knowledge of the rule.

If playing "safe" wins you nothing then why is it called "safe" when it is clearly dangerous?
It’s playing safe within the context of that one game. Highly defensive hoping for a moment from one of your players that leads to a goal to steal victory. It is dangerous when it comes to tournament football because as Southgate’s trophy cabinet will show you, it doesn’t exactly win you much else than a game against “lesser” teams.
Im a Liverpool fan through and through and I really want Southgate at my club I think he will take us further than what Klopp has ever done!

Don’t agree with the idea that Pep would necessarily do better at international level. Often said players need a season to get to grips with his system, so the problem of only seeing the players for a couple of weeks at a time would be even bigger for him.
Pep would be clever enough to adjust his play style to make it easier for players to pick it up quickly. It would be stupid to expect a national team to play like city, arsenal or Liverpool
