Gareth Southgate had won two and drawn one of his first three games - all World Cup qualifiers - in charge of the England national team, but in November 2016 he faced his first genuine test with a visit from 2010 World Cup winners Spain at Wembley. His side flew out of the blocks, as Jamie Vardy ran in behind a static Spanish defence and was brought down by former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina. Adam Lallana duly slotted home the penalty, and when Vardy rose to head home a Jordan Henderson cross early in the second half England looked in control.
Substitute Theo Walcott wasted a chance to extend the lead to three, and the hosts were made to pay at the death. Another former Liverpool man, Iago Aspas, curled home what looked a consolation on 89 minutes, but Real Madrid midfielder Isco popped up to equalise in the sixth minute of added time. In this exclusive piece for The Coaches' Voice, Southgate explains his approach to the game, the part his team played in the tactics on the day, and what lessons he learned as he continued to build a squad towards Russia 2018.

I'd like to see Roy Hodgson explain his tactical masterclass of playing players out of position and letting your main goal threat, who thrives on delivery into the box, take set pieces and corner kicks.
Hodgson lulls them into a true sense of security.
Xtravia9 I'm laughing so hard 😂 that shit's too funny and too true
Leave him alone! He did well for an owl
Yeah I'd like to see him explain having Kane, Vardy, Rashford and a fit Sturridge as strikers in your squad, but deciding to play a 4-3-3 when you only have one real winger in Sterling. On top of that, dropping Lallana who was the best player in that tournament for the knockout game to play Sturridge in a role he doesn't suit
At Liverpool he played Jamie Carragher as an attacking midfielder.
Sometimes when I'm feeling really lonely I do these tactics and talk to myself after playing a game of FIFA. I'm so alone...
AMANB57 We've all been there esp. on Champ Manager. One guy even dressed up in a suit when guiding his team to a European Cup final
We all been there bro I know its hard sometimes but you got to put yourself out there and if you ever fancy a game of fifa hit me up!
AMANB57 u wank
Amanb57- Keep your chin up Gareth.
AMANB57 you wanna cookie?
The final was definitely a disasterclass
How can say that… we lost on pens against a team who was perfect for the euros with a mix of quality, experience, youthfulnsss and just sharpness. They was made to win it and we did extremely well

Gareth Southgate is everyone's older studious geeky bro.
That's ok, we'll take him.
He would be an awesome real big bro though
I want a Gareth Southgate audio book to help me sleep
sun ny Yeah but he's more annoying than soothing.

Southgate Masterclass EUROs 2020 final when !?
What game?
@@TheCoachesVoice the final mate against Italy, what a masterclass from southgate
A lot of derisive comments on here for Gareth Southgate. I think he's come a long way, and came across in this video as an intelligent, thoughtful yet decisive man. Do not confuse his humility for weakness or cowardice. He seems tactically astute, and his comment that he consulted his players before deciding on the high press vs Spain shows excellent man-management. Too many of our managers (step forward Fabio and Sven) have imposed tactics and systems on our players that failed to utilize our potential strengths and terribly exposed our weaknesses. Now we have players who should get us to the QFs of Russia 2018: let's see how it goes. And let's get behind our English manager of England.
Brilliant comment, completely agree. Regardless of what anyone says, we are gonna play football around what our team can realistically do. Southgate isn’t bothered by the pressure or the hype around England it seems and as such I’m excited to see how he does
Yes!!! Sven played 442. Because of this decision Stuart Downing played for England when Scholes and Carrick were available. McClaren was out of his depth. Capello wouldn't let Rio Ferdinand have butter on his toast and he disrespected Stuart Pearce. He earned millions to make all the same mistakes we'd seen for the previous 5 years! Hodgeson was a safe choice but was weak tactically, lacked imagination and seemed like more of a Grandad than someone the players really respected. When Alladyce was sacked it may have been a lucky escape. I can't imagine him doing the job Southgate has done with the little time he gets to spend with the players. Your assessment is spot on.
So many people not giving him a fair shake. The more I find out about him the more I like him. I'm really glad that big Sam got sacked, it's time for a new approach and Southgate has ideas and the player's respect
Yes, he seems thoughtful and humble enough to change things if it’s not working. He’s calm and relaxed. Ticks a lot of boxes for me especially in the psychology side. Different feel about everything he does and I agree about consultation. Asking the players is good man management , I don’t know why people see that as weakness. Players need to enjoy playing and buy into the system they play within.
lo and behold! We're in the quarter finals for the world cup 2018!
Tactical Masterclass in getting a 2-2 draw against a below average Spain side?
W R I know but when you hear that line up it’s a fucking miracle 😂
that's england for u mate
@Jenson A after 2-0 germany ?
To be fair though, looking at the players on that pitch and the form they were in, we were very arguably worse than that spain side, whether they were below average or not. The form we were in at club level, let alone the pressure on the international stage, alongside new tactics being introduced so close to a big game, followed by the poor mentality they must have and even worse confidence. These players had poor fitness because their club and previous international coaches weren’t training them properly. To be honest i think southgate did pretty well
This was about 8 weeks after losing Iceland 2-1 in the Euros and we know how that went! In comparison 2-2 with the same team sound's like a miracle
True masterclass against scotland
Best manager since Hoddle. England finally have a plan, the players to suit and this man is showing his achievements at U21 level were no fluke. In the past we’ve banged on about heart and desire and tried to shoehorn players randomly into an unbalanced team. Now we are organised, effective and playing the right players, utilising their strengths, picked on merit not reputation. Long may it bloody continue! So much admiration for Southgate, his approach, planning with Steve Holland (who I believe is right on the same wavelength and equally worthy of praise), and he deserves all the plaudits coming his way...
I don’t even care if we don’t go far this year.. give this man time to do his thing! He knows the England system inside out be he’s playing footabll that suits our players.. England fans expectations are way to high
Jack S and now the results are proving his worth
i would like to see gareth southgate do well, he seems like a guy who really has it together, and is very open..whatever happens with england, i hope he gets on well in life and management england squad wise are capable of winning the world cup, but they need the tactics, the heart, the ambition, and the effort and the luck for it to happen.. i feel the team are playing for their manager and thats huge
IT'S COMING HOME!!
I just like his whole demeaner.
No there not;)
This is such a brilliant channel, really insightful.
This is actually real 😳I thought it was an edit
I'm here because he put rashford & sancho on penalty shootout
I agree with Gareth Southgate and his waistcoat.
Wow, a masterclass in how to get a 2-2 draw in a friendly using a high press against a nation who typically treats a friendly for what it is. And still could not win
I like this guy. And I like this video. Thanks.
Thank you for this video. Great channel.
IMO Southgate is the right man for the job
I had my doubts before the world cup but Southgate has managed to rid me of any misconception I had. Bring it home gaffer!
Looking back on where we first met I cannot escape and I cannot forget Southgate you're the one You still turn me on Football's coming home again
We're all here because we witnessed his Southgate Masterclass in that final 💀
Thank you Gareth.
Time to do another one for Germany
Is there anyone for quite good unintentional ASMR?
I love how Gareth’s progressed, learnt from experience and moved forward as a common sense but confident coach
Yeah and put 3 young players for deciding penalty shootout
He masterclassed a friendly match at Wembley?
Gareth Southgate is probably the first England manager to have a tactical system since....Glenn Hoddle.
Rhubba and hoddle did good. Not including the faith healer
Southgate is the epitome of Zen. What a top fellow.
SOUTHGATE YOUR THE ONE
Love to see Sam Alladace do one of these, playing tiddly winks for all the hopeful long balls hoofed up the pitch to Andy Carroll.
If you connect all the dots starting on the England side it spells out ... It’s coming home.
William Anthony That’s right
What a nice man.
*FOOTBALL* *IS* *COMING* *HOME*
Gareth has so much swagger and class, looks like the faith in him paid off as England make the semis for the first time since 96
Very nice
They put a draw of that damn game but not England’s 3-2 victory against Spain away?
Now that was a real masterclass!
I'd like to hear Fabio Cappello explaining his masterclass for 2010 WC in South Africa. Playing 4-4-2 with a single natural winger and 3 good advance midfielders. Gerrard, Barry,Lampard and Lennon. I'd really like to hear his idea of playing Stevie G off position as left winger, while he could have easily deployed Rooney as a no 10 a false 9 to link up Stevie G, G Barry and Frankie with S.W Phillips &Lennon coming from wings to goals, or simply Deffoe and Heskey as double strikers, with that diamond shape of Gerrad,Lamps,Barry and Wazza. That was a side simply made to go far tactical along with their technical abilities. But he did what he believed was best to keep his job, and I'd really want to jear his ideas on his approach.

I love this man.
Lets hope that love grows later today! COE!
Mattie Mclean coolest man on the pitch
+Arsenal What a fuckin legend. if if we get thumped next game, this man has nothing to be ashamed of. COME ON ENGLAND!!
Looking forward to the Croatia 2-1 England episode
If England do well he will be hot property in world football management. Guy that wants to play good football, can adapt, intelligent and wants to bring and develop young players. To me he’s perfect for England as these are all the things England have lacked.
Thilor Bim I completely agree and he’s shown his worth so far by reaching the quarter finals.
Don't you mean semis?
This aged well
Southgate seems like he's one of those people that understands something so well he can struggle to explain it. He's definitely got my vote of confidence. CPFC's too.
Hey Southgate, how about you do Masterclass on England v. Croatia? Fill us in on the strategy behind your like-for-like substitutions.
Flux Mulder how anyone uses Dier as an “impact” player I have no idea
You mean the masterclass he did yesterday?
Gareth Southgate, Son of God
The team we have under a proper manger that attacks the game we are the best in the world.
I hope this man is brought in again to Coaches Voice after the World Cup. Would love to hear his thoughts on how he prepared for each game.
IT'S COMING HOME
He has come a long way lads... Proved himself at the world cup and now england is at the uefa league nations finals.
He has a "Jenson Button's older brother" sort of look.
IT’S COMIN’ HOME!!!!
2016: England 2 Spain 2 2018: England 3 Spain 2 (in a competitive match away as well) Please have him come back and explain the victory!
1 holding player against modric, rakatic, and persic!! Loool
IT’S COMING HOME BOYS!!!!
With Gareth Southgate I always feel he gets the right players on the pitch in the right positions. If they don’t perform and don’t get a result, it’s invariably because an individual player did not play well, not because he was picked to play in the wrong position on the pitch.
i hope we meet again in the finals! greetings from belgium!
Bring it on!
Maybe not. Might meet in the 3rd and 4th place game (BUT I HOPE NOT!).
We're meeting again, unfortunately for the 3rd/4th place game :(
I want to kill myself
:) :) :) cheers! 2-0
Jesus, he literally said nothing.. this is time of my life I'll never get back
Tifo Football must love this guy.
Match tie with Spain is indeed a glory for England
Just one question - who is Derek Dier and why isn't he in the World Cup squad?
He looks like a laid back coach I wish he was my coach
What an insult to the best managers to call this man a masterclass Norwich wouldn’t even call him up makes you think what if big Sam stayed
2-2 in a friendly what a masterclass
Considering Spain's quality, the disaster of a side he inherited from Hodgson, how early it was in his tenure and how he barely had a chance to get the players used to his system it turned out well enough...
"And here you have football, and as you can see, it's coming home."
imagine Southgate being invited to give a masterclass
Southgate is a gentleman. A class act and is becoming a really good manager. People should keep their snarky fucking comments to themselves. He’s the best thing to happen to our national team in decades.
It's coming home Gazerus
Euro 2020 :)))))))
You’re joking. He’s the one who needs a masterclass in tactics, he’s a farce.
You’re clueless
It's coming home
You bring it home...you'll become Saint Southgate
#GarethSoughtgateWould sit you down and calmly analyse and explain football tactics.
Previous world cups i laugh hard when england play...till me stomach hurts.... But this time around seems abit convincing
It would be fair enough to laugh hard at England in penalty shootouts. At the WC they've only been knocked out in open play three times since 1970 (that was to a handball goal in 1986, 2-1 to Brazil in 2002 and then to Germany in 2010 after the worst goal line call in football history). They've exited on penalties three times, and gone out at the group stage once (compare that with Italy, who've gone out at the group stages twice).
And look what happened
Cure for insomnia.
It’s coming home
A draw is considered a masterclass? The standards these days

I wish Vardy and Welbeck got more game time in the WC , but that’s hindsight
No tactics just vibes
Should have brought on vardy against Croatia at the half...Kane was exhausted to me and vardys pace for counter attack would have finished them...alas
Took the words out of my mouth mate!
game: take a shot everytime he says "ummm"
I actually enjoy watching England since Southgate took over it was very boring before.
Guaranteed goals, intensity off the ball, nice combination play to unlock sides every game. What's not to like
@@danofthesouth Lol
Tactical masterclass would be if you beat them 2-0 😝 🏴
Great tactics. Another tactic if all else fails is ; injure the other team
Looking back at this now, that England lineup is horrendous lol
Southgate has not yet been able to apply the plan he prepared with the English team before arriving in Russia ,as he relied in the friendly matches and matches qualifying for the World Cup defensive style and then the counter attack. The question is why ? because all the teams that played against them play strong defensive methods and therefore did not enable him to play the plan already drawn. Now I'm not able to know the thought and style of Southgate on the pitch and that may extend to the time of his match with Sweden, which plays a fast and balanced ball between defense and attack . Example When The English team scored the first goal i expected from Southgate to drag the Colombian team to his plan and to impose himself but he didn't what we saw from Southgate , he killed the game in the middle of the pitch and this caused the Colombian team to have the ball and build an attack until the equalizer scored. Dele Alli needs to be left out ,he doesn't have the speed on the ball to get away from players. He has just been flicking on balls or going sideways always looks very heavy when he has the ball .never looks like he is going to make anything happen .England needs someone more dynamic to be able to link with Lingard when breaking forward ,i think Loftus much better with Lingard . The trick is to involve( Jamie Vardy), who doesn't suit the attacking system for England So far.
Absolute fool. He’s a coward and he makes us play like cowards.
