Unai Emery made history by winning three consecutive Europa League titles in his three-year spell with Sevilla, who under Julen Lopetegui reached yet another final in 2019/20.
In this exclusive Masterclass with The Coaches’ Voice, Emery revisits the third of those three successive finals, when his side came from behind to defeat a Liverpool team in their first season under Jürgen Klopp.
Emery, who is now in charge at Villareal after spells with Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, explains how the two teams set up in identical 4-2-3-1 formations, with the influential Éver Banega in the number 10 position and Mariano and Coke a potentially dangerous combination down the right flank. He goes on to reveal how he reacted to Liverpool taking a first-half lead, and what changed in a second-half comeback that ultimately led to a third straight win in the competition for Sevilla.

Watched this so I could watch Unai speak tactical in his own language, his English has improved massively but getting his thoughts fluidly in Spanish is far better . The reason he failed with Arsenal was primarily the language barrier. On the fox podcast they said the players were mocking him, made fun of the way he spoke and never respected him. What he said never got through to the players. I always felt he was under appreciated and never had a true chance, I mean the man got trophies. I think its the ego's of the English, especially the ebening, which is proof of them mocking his spanish accent. I found it weird what ever Emery did he had troubles, but when Arteta did the same thing he don't get heat, such as not playing Ozil. The squad was soo bad, he had to keep to changing the squad to see what works. The English really think this is a good squad, which is funny. When he got sacked a lot of managers were backing Emery saying its their defense. There was a game where Kolasinac did not head the ball out when the ball was heading into the goal, under Arteta, even nbc analyst said they have bad defenders. From 5th place to 8th place. They wanted to win now with Emery, but now they are patient with Arteta waiting to be on top in the next three years. Emery got played and I hope he does his best with Villarreal
You're being completely disingenuous. First of all, the reason we're 8th is because Emery left us in midtable and Arteta had to pick up the pieces. Under Emery we NEVER saw the sort of discipline we've seen in the recent games vs City, Liverpool and Chelsea. Everyone has been agreed for a long time that the defence is bad, but that's not helped by the fact that they looked undeniably lost under Emery whereas now they play with a structure and togetherness. As for Ozil, Emery dropped him last season unceremoniously for an extended period and we never really found out why - it's different to the situation under Arteta, where you get the sneaky sense that he's being frozen out because of his Uyghurs comments (horrible of true but I think that's what's happening).
- The language barrier was one problem among many others - We all knew the squad was poor, I don’t think anyone believed it to be particularly good - Only Özils fans got on Emery’s case for dropping him, he has a large following on social media.
@@moluther2826 a year later he knocked Arsenal out of UEL, went on to win his 4th UEL title, and is now in the semis of the Champions League after knocking out Bayer and Juve. Arsenal however have since finished 8th AGAIN, and now struggle to finish in the top 4 despite having no European OR cup competitions to compete for. My guess is a hattrick of 8th 😂

As a Liverpool fan I was really surprised by what happened to him at Arsenal...Sevilla were such a well-organized team. Goes to show there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes, not just tactics.
Arsenal must feel like shit being the only team with which Emery reached Europa League final and didnt win it.
One game in and us Villa fans are already infatuated with him. He commands enormous respect for not only his past record but also because he is clearly dedicated and a student of the game and more importantly he is a decent human being. In Unai we trust 💙 💜 Up the Villa 🦁

Interesting fact about this match, Mamadou Sakho was wrongly banned from playing in that match after being falsely accused of doping. UEFA apologised for it but the damage was done. I wonder how different things would've been.
Sakho was definitely a leader on the pitch and as Emery explains this as a psychological game. He would've helped

As LFC fan I respect Emery, he's much better than he gets credit for. But look at Klopps team in the final, it was amazing to even get to the final with that team. Klopp was at the start of rebuild and Sevilla was at the peak, that was their 3rd EL trophy in a row and if LFC scored 2nd goal in first half, they would win that game. That LFC defence was dead.
I'd say the Sevilla team wasn't great either, especially in defence. I remember wanting Liverpool to win though.
I'm probably one of the few Arsenal fans that gives more credit to Emery. He's a great coach, just was unfortunate to draw almost 8 games with poor defense at Arsenal. He finished 5th in his first season, almost finished 3rd actually if not for the defensive blunders in the latter stages of the season.
Sadly for beating Liverpool, he suffered the same fate as Watford and Atletico Madrid in 2020.

Sevilla mentality is elite but they lack quality the same way Arsenal have quality in every department but lacks elite mentality since moving to Emirates stadium. Especially after tonight- as an Arsenal fan let me say this- we as a fanbase treated him terribly. A brilliant manager with a pedigree other coaches can only dream of, a tactical mind and a knack for showing up in the biggest games. Even with a squad of La Liga has beens and premier league rejects he completely outclassed utd tactically today. An exemplary coach both on and off the field.
This man is a genius if he could’ve won the champions league if there were var at that time . With arsenal he didn’t get the backing like every arsenal manager . With sevilla he did a remarkable job .
Mind you he built a squad with little funds

Has world class potential for sure. Did well at Valencia Sevilla then PSG unlucky with Monaco surprise and Uefalona in UCL. Got Arsenal to Europe League final. Didnt know English well nor French to communicate with his players. Some selection XI where very bad too was missing few players then Xhaka played like shit. It was chaos. I think Emery did good enough there and has overall very good CV. Hopefully he wins Europe League or Copa Del Rey in Villareal in those three years he is there and top four Champions League spot ;) Good Luck !
Unfortunately his management style never suited Arsenal, didn’t get the backing from the board and he also had to deal with a language barrier. It was always going to be difficult taking over after the Wenger era. Disappointing to see many fans calling him a moron and saying that he ruined Arsenal. But all the best Unai! Kirthan Sakhamuri He didn’t even want Pépé, he wanted Zaha. That in itself showed the lack of backing by the board, otherwise they would have invested in players that Emery thought would have suited his style. ‘Backing’ doesn’t just mean throwing a lump of cash on a certain player. U can spend as much as u want but at the end of the day if the players don’t suit a manager’s style of play then it’s useless.

Can't really blame him entirely for that. The players didn't turn up.
He stressing on the fact that Coke and Mariano pressing on the right heavily reminded me that game was exactly cost us by the mistakes of Alberto Moreno, kudos for the tactical improvisation but Liverpool were betrayed by the single player and maybe the emotions played a certain role in it, he being arrived at Liverpool from Sevilla or Moreno simply being himself. Other factor not being mentioned here is some of the refereeing decisions not being totally impartial. The unethically banning of in-form Mamadou Sakho for drinking, comparatively a Gatorade, which was overturned later on is also haunting sometimes. The same story repeated at the UCL17-18 final adding on to the frustrations to the Liverpool supporters, but the calmness and wide thinking capability of Sir Klopp and the persevering mentality built around him actually led on to become the champions of Europe, World, and finally after a wait of over 3 decades , the Champions of England. #YNWA. #Klopp_for_Kop
