  • Claus's opening statement AND the title of this video: "We will NOT go down the rabbit hole!" Claus then proceeds down the rabbit hole with units of measure and other musings. Like Jingles, never change Claus. We are here for the entertainment and education that you uniquely provide.

  • Claus, the "Urkilogramm" was made of Platin- Iridium, not off resin. Today the SI-Units rebuild out of cosmological constants. f.e.g For the length: Since 1983, one meter has been defined as the length of the distance that light travels in a vacuum during a period of 1/299,792,458 of a second.

  • UTC time is based on an average of values from a number of atomic clocks around the world. However it's not as straight forward as that, because these atomic clocks are so accurate, and each one is invariably at a different altitude, the tiny time differences due to gravitational time dilation has to be accounted for, before coming up with the actual UTC time (which is much more accurate than any single atomic clock).

Being born in Europe and living in US for more than 3 decades I can tell that for conservative Americans it is more important to be different than to use system that make sense. This has horrible impact on education. Populist politicians benefit from population being less smart.

  • Finally, somebody who gets it. For years one of the conundrums that I've faced while taking a d.....thinking on the throne, was the subject of measurement. I mean, we invented measurement. So what if we got it wrong? What if, an inch isn't really an inch? What if we're really only 1' tall (average adult height) and we've inflated that measurement in order to feel more significant? I mean, face it, men have been exaggerating 6" ever since caveman days! One more thing, every time that Claus says, "We're not going down that rabbit hole..." I turn to my dog and whisper, "Be vewy, vewy quiet. We're hunting wabbits"!!

I'll just do one version, split the difference basically, so 25.4 mm became the defacto new standard. The US and UK gallons are still different...

    @rikkshow@rikkshow16 күн бұрын
    • But the final adoption by all countries to the 25.4 inch wasn't until the 1960s. And that included Australia/Canada also the Scottish inch to that was a little different. I believe the Swedish and the Dutch versions of inch (tum, duim), translates to thumb, were adjusted. Lol, they were basically ALL different a hundred years ago...

  • Hey Claus - So I'm putting on my waistcoat and winding my pocket watch as I hop past Alice.... Yup, you're absolutely correct, we need Standards so we are able to accurately communicate with each other. So isn't it the ultimate irony that our primary tool for communication - written and spoken language - is so completely fractured and non-standardized. I looked up a couple of sources and got a rough estimate of between 5,000 to 7,000 different spoken languages in use today. No wonder the world's a mess. And I agree with mmkrk4071 - it's absolutely absurd the US never adopted the full metric system. And I say "full" because we have such a MIX of units, just to insure maximum confusion. We decided on decimal-based currency instead of British pounds sterling but kept inches, feet, yards, and miles. We buy quarts and gallons of milk but soda comes in ounce and LITER-sized bottles. And if your into firearms we still define size by caliber - 22, 32, 38, 45, 50, etc but police and military use 9mm pistol ammo, 556 & 7.62 rifle ammo and 120mm tank cannon and 155mm arty. Dumb! But ... good games today. And - Time in video games IS completely relative to the wished of the programmers; remember Neo and Bullet Time.
