Emma the Tiger Shark and Jim Abernethy

Jim Abernethy and Emma the Tiger Shark. Emma is the most filmed, photographed, and famous shark on the planet. She has starred in or appeared in approximately 14 movies filmed by her closest friend Jim Abernethy although most are not in English. Nat Geo is currently working on a film about Emma being the most friendly Tiger Shark in the world. I MAY be fortunate enough to have some of the video I shot of her with Jim appear in the film. Diving with her was probably the coolest thing I’ve ever done. She is so friendly and a fantastic shark to photograph. I’ve never had a Tiger Shark swim right up to me and pose as she does. She is definitely a supermodel shark. Video by Steve Kathrein. Video by Steve Kathrein

  • I watch these videos of Emma and her friends every day and have become very interested in learning more about sharks and their behavior. People are always afraid of things they don't understand and the next thing you know they start killing them. We need to have laws that protect these beautiful animals. I just love Emma so much and this has made me want to look more into educating people more about sharks and their behavior. I was a teacher and I showed this to my friends and children in my neighborhood showing them that sharks are not the monsters they are portrayed to be and they love it. Please pet her for me, I wish I could do it and give her a kiss on the head lol. God bless you all for the wonderful work you are doing.

    • Thank you so much for that wonderful comment. Sometimes I get down on myself when I see that some of my videos have only gotten a few views but hearing that you show videos like mine to others inspires me to post more. 🙏

    • @@steve_kathrein Don't be down on yourself. You are so very welcome,. I grew up in a commercial fishing family and used to always wonder about sharks even as a child. I remember asking my father when we were out on the boat where were the sharks? lol he told me they were all around us we just couldn't see them because they were under the boat which made me cry. I will always support saving sharks. We need them and they need us. I hope and pray that people will someday see that sharks are not the monsters everyone thinks they are. You keep putting up those videos, People will come around and I will always be around watching all your wonderful videos 🙂Big Hug and hang in there and Thank You. I will continue to show your videos to as many people as I can.

  • Having just encountered the amazing story between you and her, Emma, while looking through stories about wild animals. Not being fully aware how tough her life has been, I can somehow kind of sense it by seeing scars on her fin and her skin. Luckily she has met you and got helped in removing the hook. Wish you both make wonderful memories together and thank you again for sharing this wonderful story with all of us on KZhead. :)

  • Emma made me rethink what I thought I knew about sharks. Don't get me wrong. The Great White still give me screaming nerves, but I think I'll learn more about these creatures. So much I do not know.

    • I was terrified of Tiger Sharks before watching Jim Abernethy's videos of Emma. He made me realize Shark Week is just wrong, complete BS. I've become good friends with Jim A. and he says white sharks are just like all the other sharks, afraid of humans and not interested at all in eating us. I was so surprised to see how afraid a 15' tiger shark was of me. I was able to scare them off by just looking at them in the eyes. I have video of Tiger Sharks watching me as they swim bye like "Is he going to attach me?" So funny how different they are in reality.

  • Is this Emma who brings her friends to get their fish hooks removed?

    @karensheehan2878@karensheehan28784 ай бұрын
    • Jim removes hooks from Emma and all the sharks at Tiger Beach. I don't know that there is any evidence that Emma brings any sharks with hooks here, but another shark conservationist that works with Caribbean Reef sharks says that once she started removing hooks from her usual friends, other sharks with hooks started showing up on her dives.

  • Dear I say I would go swimming with Emma! OMG... I can't believe I just wrote that! I am absolutely horrified of sharks to the point of never being in the ocean deeper than my knees in my 60 years of age! This shark is a true gem!

    • Emma is special, but every Tiger Shark I have been in thee water with is an absolute sweet heart. Watching actual footage of divers diving with sharks instead of the BS Shark Week tries to pawn off is the first step. Now you need to start looking at the statistics and compare it to reaality. www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/shark-attacks/odds/compare-risk/. Sharks are one of the safest animals on the planet. Dogs, Elephants, even Coconuts kill more people than sharks.

  • Ya know i thought tiger sharks along w many others were very aggressive. Do not know what affection is. Would never recognize a person as a friend let alone recognize a person whom they like. Id like to thank you for sharing this as i would have never known sharks actually are affectionate and like head scratches. Im literally blown away w emma and her behavior. It really makes you wonder how many other animals and fish are just the same. Its also amazing many dolphins whales etc. Will actually try to save a person and other animals. Maybe its me but its mind blowing to me. Who would have ever thought something like this is possible. Let alone sharks of all things would exhibit such behavior. Id love to have a shark buddy. It makes you realize theres alot more things out there with feelings and emotions. I seen a shark smile when it seen its human friend. Who knew finding nemo's bruce smiling was actually a real thing lol. Simply amazing, people gotta remember. In the ocean we're in their house not the other way around. I thought tiger sharks were mean and boy was i wrong. Again, thank you very much for sharing such an amazing experience. Take care

  • How come everyone over here is nice, but the comments to Ocean Ramsey are mean?....I think all of the divers are awesome for doing this.

    @suzanne1430@suzanne14303 ай бұрын
    • Personally I liked Ocean Ramsey until she started using the fear of sharks to profit from. She started a website that supposedly teaches you how to "safely" dive with sharks. All you have to do is know a few things. Look them in the eyes, don't try to swim away, you can't swim faster than them and if you act like food you may get treated like food. Lastly, if you swim at them and act like you are the predator, you will scare them off. Anyone want to pay me hundreds of dollars for that info? 🤣

  • Why are so many of the sharks females? Whichever they are, they are gorgeous and noble.

    @shellyryan8506@shellyryan85063 ай бұрын
    • I wonder that as well. All the Tigers at Tiger Beach have always been female, there has never been a male spotted ever. This has actually been a scientific research topic. Aside from the Tigers, most of the other sharks at TB are female too. There are occasionally a male Lemon or Reef spotted, but they are pretty rare and I'm sorry but I can't answer that.
