Learning how to swim. About that subject I saw something really touching last week at the beach. A person in the Netherlands whom can't swim is a exception. There was this foreign guy and he didn't know how to swim, we saw him hesitant at the shoreline, looking around seeing the kids running into the sea without fear. It became clear he wanted to do the same. A couple approached him and they told him that they would learn him to swim. Before you knew it a total of like 5 adults were teaching this foreigner how to swim. It was nice and heartwarming. Society should be like that all the time. Be kind to others and help each other

You have no idea how important that swimming part is. Every summer there's tragic stories on the news about somebody who drowned somewhere and they're usually here on holiday or moved from another country and just never learned to swim. Such a vital life skill that really should be universally taught...
Yeah, I've heard a bit about those stories. Really sad!
but remember one thing, don't think you can beat the sea now that you can swim.
And don't go farther than waist high into the sea. The North Sea is treacherous, even when it looks calm. We want you to stay alive and living here.

@@petervanderkruk8346 Isn't that a bit exaggerated? One can swim in the sea. Just need to pay attention to warnings and if there are certain currents or tides that seem to pull you in. I swam in the sea a lot this year, I never go too far but definitely to a point that I can't stand on my feet anymore.

You learning the language is brilliant. I'm regurarly in meetings where six Dutch people have to speak English, because of the one member from the USA who lives here for seven years, studied at Dutch university and still doesn't speak Dutch. We all speak English quite well, but after a long day at work, when you're tired, it's getting more difficult...

I would hold the meetings in Dutch, give them 3 months warning and that’s it! I’m Dutch and had to learn English when I married an English guy in the 70’s

Yes, this will definitely be my story soon! I’m making the change to move to the Netherlands. I’ve always had a connection with the country, even though I’ve never been there before. I’ve been learning Dutch and the culture for years! Now it’s all up to divine timing! Great video!

I laughed so hard when he said i cant swim. I am a dutch guy so yes i learned when i was 4 something like that. I didn't know it was here so importend like i was thinking i was arround the world and the transformation what he had in swimming is so cool🤩
@@justvibeandplay5648 I had my first swimming lessons in second grade of elementary school. In an open air swimming area of a lake. When an indoor swimming pool opened a year later, we all got our A, B and C swim certificate in school sports. Very funny because at the same lesson hour, military got their lessons too. Crying young men afraid of the water! Hilarious! But already almost sixty years ago...
When I was young I thought that swimming lessons were a basic part of almost every young childs education in every country in the world. I was really shocked when I found out this wasn't true 😅

I just moved over to the Netherlands and I gotta say, I love your videos. They are not the usual reviews, opinions or advice that you see. Gives some really good insight into the things you have learnt personally which can be relatable to a lot of people. I really like your style too, you always give me a chuckle with some of the comments and transitions. I am hoping to be proficient in Dutch very soon! It is at the top of my list

Exactly what I like so much in the Netherlands is meeting all these different cultures. I’m married to a Surinamese but my whole youth I spend my time making music with Indonesian and Molukkan friends. It was so much fun because they’re Dutch but still maintaining there own habits, music and food culture. If you have the chance, visit a pasar malam (evening market). Very warm and welcoming people, with interesting stories to tell. And yeah, swimming is so natural for us we have no idea it’s not common practice in all parts of the world. Great you picked up on that.

@@exploringtheforeign Actually I’m pretty much an introvert but I was fortunate that my parents used to attend a church with a lot of Indonesian people and right away they felt like family and we share a passion for music so I totally submerged in their culture and music. That’s many years ago and the elderly Mollukans told me firsthand there story how they where forced to relocate to the Netherlands, very interesting history they find out about. But you already experienced the Surinamese culture a bit and how easy it is to make friends, if you’re open to it. Like you said, live to short to not explore new things.
@@hunchbackaudio Interesting! I learned a little bit about the Moluccans last year and the unfortunate history they have with the Dutch. It was my first time hearing about them! By the way, where do you recommend to go for a night market?
@@exploringtheforeign Yeah that's a whole story in itself and most of the first generation is no longer with us. But their children will be happy to tell you about it. Most Indonesians are situated around Den Haag, if you're looking closer to Amsterdam, you can find a big population Moluccans and Indo's in Huizen (NH). But Pasar Malams are held all over the country, I would try to find a bigger one. Their most famous band is called Moluccan Moods, if you can find one where they play your good. And then the food, that's a whole world in itself to discover, but you'll see.

What a beautiful City it is being Dutch and after 40 years in L.A. just moved back to Amsterdam omg what a difference to the quality of life i did not realize as was excited to live and work in L.A. as a great experience but yeah 40 years omg. Happy i returned not sure i would appreciate it as much if i stayed in Amsterdam as now.

Great job. You always get a much better feel of the country when you fully adapt to the life style. Ik ben duitser en leef in Spanje. In mijn leven is het altijd heel belangrijk geweest, verschillene talen te leren en natuurlijk de taal van de land waar je leeft. En zo spreek ik spaans, valencians, engels, frans en natuurlijk mijn moedertaal duits.

You should come over to the south once to the province of Limburg, you thought the big city's were multicultural you haven't seen anything yet. About the work effort here in the Netherlands i think u missed a critical point. We know and firmly believe that being healthy yourself in body and soul, is the only way to endure a life of hard work. This gives us in the long run much more healthy citizens who can work longer harder, without the high rate of mental or physical problems along the way. But i think the biggest thing here in the Netherlands is our gouvernement, at least in the past we always had a business like cabinet who ruled the country as a company. We rather have a ruthless businessman in charge looking at every cent spend, then a politician giving out gifts. Great video keep it going.

Wonderfull that you took the time to learn the Dutch way of living. Now I am curious , have you only learned the Dutch way of living in the big city in the western part of the country or have you tried another part of the Netherlands as well to see how their Dutch way of living is ? Each part of the Netherlands is so different , socially, interests, language (dialects ) pace of life. Could be interesting for you to find that out. Here in the Eastern part of the Netherlands specially in the small villages it is very normal for everybody to greet each other and it doesn’t matter if you are familiar to us or not. Spread your wings and find out how beautiful and interesting the rest of the Netherlands is. 😃 loved the video 🫶🏻❤️

Ik ben net verhuisd naar Amsterdam, maar voor dat was ik in Brabant voor anderehalf jaar aan het wonen, eerst een dorpje voor 3 maanden en Den Bosch voor een beetje meer dan een jaar. Ik ben heel blij mee dat ik heb dit ervaring gehad omdat zoals jij zegt, er zijn zoveel verschillende culturen en dingen hier in Nederland buiten de grootte steden🙌🏾

Have you adapted in using the metric system when measuring distances, or when weighing groceries, or when you want to know what the temperature is? Or do you find your self going back and forth and converting to the US Customary System?

I respect your grind and I appreciate your enthusiasm for learning the language. Whenever I meet expats, I automatically change to speaking English so that I can make it easier for them but does that help at all?
Heel erg bedankt! As for the switching to English, I understand the natural desire to want to do that if you see someone struggling with Dutch or not speaking at the same level that you speak English, but if Dutch people do that, I also don't think it'd be valid for them to be upset that no one speaks Dutch haha. For myself, I'm very aware to be stubborn with speaking back in Dutch, but I know most people don't feel comfortable going back to Dutch after a Dutch person responds in English.
Tip, vraag altijd of ze Nederlands willen leren, en leg alleen dingen in het Engels uit en ga verder in het NL’s,

Just moved to Belgium, How long did it take you to learn Dutch ? Would appreciate a video or some insight on free tools or things that helped you get to where you're at now with the language.
Hey awesome! How's it going so far there? As for learning Dutch, so just to be clear, I'm not fluent haha, but I'm at a level where I'm comfortable with having 80% of conversations and can understand about 80% of things I hear. I'd say getting around this level took roughly 5-6 months. And to the way I got there was consuming as much stuff in Dutch as possible, reading the news in Dutch, only using Dutch when doing every day tasks like grocery shopping or ordering food, watching a lot of TV in Dutch, etc. And the key is to just be confident in whatever you learn/know. We're not native speakers, so no point in being scared of making mistakes :) just go out and try and through repetition of all of the things mentioned above, you'll find yourself speaking in no time!
I guess the issue here is that in much of the Dutch speaking part, they speak the Flemish dialect of Dutch, which in some cases leads to question marks when I hear it. Or rather a big fat "Huh?" So learning Dutch will get you there eventually, but it is part of the journey. I can recommend Duo Lingo. Their method is very methodical and clever and will get you on the way. Trying to find Dutch spoken documentaries with subtitles and listening to it will train your ears.
indeed ... don't worry about making mistakes. ask people to correct your mistakes or to explain, and refuse to switch to english because that's what most flemish and dutch people will do immediately, but you won't learn anything that way.

as a Canadian, im really surprised the USA doesn't have much for swimming classes. All through school I had swimming classers. Never thought of the difference, but it makes sense because Canada has the most amount of lakes in the world. As Canada has a whopping 2 million lakes, I guess swimming is a necessity
Yeah, it's not as common there as people would think aha. But there are still a lot of Americans that do lessons and also some high schools that require it as a class.
