Moving to Amsterdam was a big decision, so now that we have experienced living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands for a few months, we reflect on the pro's and con's of life as expats in this special city.
What are our favourite parts of living in Amsterdam? What do we miss here?
Let us know your thoughts!
Love,

  • The final comments are so relatable. As someone who's lived in a few cities, it's easy to remember a city with ONLY the pros involved. All have their pros and cons, and just because you miss a city, doesn't mean it's where you're meant to be now. We all evolve.

  • Amsterdam is by far one of our favourite cities! My wife and I, pre-kids used to visit every summer to visit her relatives. Love the relaxed vibe and friendly people. We used to rent a canal house in the Jordaan district every year and just immerse ourselves into the neighbourhood. Being from Vancouver the rain was never an issue with us. So glad that you are enjoying your new home and settling in. Looking so forward to showing our daughters Amsterdam and all it has to offer this coming summer! Stay happy!

The spring and fall were also nicer and much dryer then it has been the last 12 months. So hope the best for the 2022 weather 🤞

  • Still find it pretty amazing that I’m now living in the same city as where you are! I fell in love with the Netherlands because of my first visit in Amsterdam but I actually didn’t expect living here at first - it’s too touristy, and busier than other Dutch cities. After staying here for 1.5 years I’m so much in love with it. I enjoy biking around; I like the vibe here. My sense of belonging really started to grow. It’s so nice to hear your experience of living in Amsterdam too. Thanks for sharing!

  • This summer was definitely a very cold/rainy one. Definitely not the standard here, although also not out of the norm completely. Last summer we had droughts and weeks where it stayed 23+ degrees. Also important to note about the cuisine, is that we have Dutch versions of a lot of international dishes, but we don't say it's Dutch. So many things that you can find in lets say Chinese restaurants aren't typical Chinese, but rather Dutch/Chinese, and very famously so, but maybe only famous in the Netherlands. And I think you guys also just did not find the right restaurants yet, because there's really good food here, you just have to know where to look (but yes hella expensive) Btw I also live in Amsterdam Oost and I have a medium sized dog that loves playing with other dogs! I have some tips if you guys want where you can find parks where (in my experience) plenty of large dogs visit.

    @ciaoberry123@ciaoberry1232 жыл бұрын
    • That's true! I noticed international food here are modified for Dutch tastes while in the major cities of the world you tend to find more authentic flavours for a cheaper price even. There's some good food but if you compare to any of the major cities in the world the food culture in Amsterdam is definitely lagging behind in terms of taste, price and options.

  • The descendants of the real " Amsterdammers" have left Amsterdam for 95% since the 1960s. This for several reasons. So what you find over there is a society that differs a lot from large parts of the Netherlands. You will find almost none working class Dutchies in Amsterdam. Housing is way to expensive over there. Dutchies working in Amsterdam live for a large part outside of the city.

    @AndreasAntoniusMaria@AndreasAntoniusMaria2 жыл бұрын
  • Amsterdam is the most expensive city in the Netherlands by far. prices typically are 500% more expensive (including housing) then when you go to provinces in the north (groningen) and south (limburg) even at the beaches in zeeland everything is much more affordable and authentic. Amsterdam really is a place of its own.

I’d say Paris had the best food and London second but I prefer NYC, SF or LA food options. I wish more places had food trucks like Portland and Austin. Also I went to 1 foodhall in Amsterdam wasn’t as good as say Chelsea Market in NYC. A food city to me usually you see lines of people waiting to order from multiple places and not bc of covid rules. Way too many kebab shops in Europe. As far as vegetarian/vegan LA and NYC to me had the most options even though Im not either Le Botaniste in the UES prob my fav, their curry bowl just blows you away.

    @aiidagaysina9688@aiidagaysina96882 жыл бұрын
    • Ah yeah we hear bad things about medical care here... It sucks that you have to pay for insurance out of your own pocket (in Canada basic coverage is free). So far Lilian just went to the doctor once and he was German and seemed quite competent 😉Will keep you posted on that! But the stereotype I hear is that GPs are very bad and will only recommend paracetamol for everything...

      @AlexisLilian@AlexisLilian2 жыл бұрын
    • @@AlexisLilian @Alexis and Lilian I'm sorry to hear this apparently is the stereotype about Dutch GP's.. I'm a Dutch doctor (not a GP, but I still might therefore be biased) ;) but I feel that the medical care in the Netherlands is very professional, inclunding the GP's. I can imagine however that the Dutch GP's are different from what people are used to in other countries. Dutch doctors indeed tend to be quite hesitant with prescribing. antibiotics compared to countries like Spain or Italy. That's not because they're unwilling or incompetent, but because they're trying to prevent antibiotic resistance (which is becoming quite a big problem worldwide). Anyhow, I'm glad you're enjoying your time in the Netherlands and hope you're future experiences with Dutch doctors will be better :)

      @CarolineSiev@CarolineSiev2 жыл бұрын
    • If you're sick, it's one week in bed if you go to the doctor en takes antibiotics. If you takes paracetamol, it will be one week to, without becoming resistant to antibiotics.

      @diederik3659@diederik36592 жыл бұрын
    • @@diederik3659 - a Dutch MD once told me that his professor had taught him that a flue with antibiotics is over in two weeks but with paracetamol in 14 days. Given that MD's age group, I could forgive him a bit, but considering where the science was at the time, there was really no excuse to repeat this in a client's consultation. There is a related problem in your comment. "Antibiotics" (AB) originally were an evolutionary development of yeasts/molds to battle bacteria. Yes, penicillin was invented by evolution and the old Egyptians already used it to treat ulcerated wounds (in the form of rubbing the mold from a slice of bread into the ulceration). So the general position should be that AB only should be used in the treatment of bacterial infections. Long term AB use may open up to yeast/mold/fungal infections and to prevent these, long term AB use probably should be sided by "antimycotics" (AM). This leaves the elephant in the room: viral infections - most AB and AM do nothing against viruses. And this is where that MD should have gotten flack. There is anecdotal indication that one or two AB meds may have antiviral (AV) properties, but not enough to base treatment on. And there are anecdotal indications that some psychiatric meds have AV properties when "we" actually may not know why or how these work. The biggest issue in your comment is "becoming resistant to antibiotics". It's simple: "you" don't become resistant to AB, ever. The problem is that bacteria evolve very fast and become resistant. When you have an infection of a trillion bacteria of a single species (that's just a tiny bit), there are always individuals with a form of resistance. Kill most of these with a weak AB and what remains are the bacteria that are resistant. Kill most of these the first two days of AB intake and you killed maybe 80%, but don't finish the course as you feel better, so now you created resistance of these pathogens in/on your body to this AB. All medicine men prescribing AB like mad are criminals and all patients not finishing their courses are fools. Note that this story also applies to e.g. the antibacterial soap you use and that says "kills 96% of bacteria" - yeah right and the remaining 4% are extremely dangerous (read about MRSA), plus almost 100% of yeast/mold/fungal as well as viral pathogens survive that. This all however does not prove that the Dutch protocol is great. It misses important cases that initially present to them as "vague complaints". These are easily talked down as "between your ears", see a shrink instead of me. Then 10 years later the client dies of cancer (the battle for survival took 7 years and was lost).

      @jpdj2715@jpdj27152 жыл бұрын
    • In the NL, if you need medicine you have to beg and cry to your doctor, they have the tendency of not taking their patients seriously. Also, they don't have a preventive mentality when it comes to medicine so more often than not you will have to be very insistent to get any type of treatment

  • Like shops, all "horeca" (ho tels, re staurants, ca fés) make a living per square meter of real estate. This means, when real estate is relatively expensive, then horeca is relatively expensive. If you want to find a good restaurant in the NL, acquire the last issue of "Lekker" magazine (an annual Dutch language publication - the name means "Delicious"). There's a restaurant Top 100 of the NL in it, plus some 500 "recommended" ones that come below the first 100 but are not ranked. You'll find extremely good restaurants in "provincial" places where real estate is cheaper. The Dutch will travel there to have a good meal. As Amsterdam is over-crowded (except in Covid times it is not) with tourists, most restaurants in Amsterdam I would qualify as tourist traps. There's no bad intention there, but circumstances and making money too easily work out that way. You can still find excellence, if you know where to go. But never cheap. My prejudice of the 51..100 in that Top 100 are not significantly more expensive than any other place outside the Top 100. Dutch cuisine has its roots in peasant cuisine of the province and pauper city dwellers of urbanization that happened here rather early (~many centuries ago). It's where two bread dominated meals out of three per day stem from. The upper classes, though, always had their upper class cuisine. This is nicely illustrated by table manners: most of the Dutch will say "eet smakelijk" (literally "eat tastefully" or enjoy your meal) to each other at the start of a meal or course. That's extremely not done in upper class - you don't express wishes for food tasting great, because if it doesn't you fire (execute?) the cook. Rather someone makes a speech, may compliment the host, raise the glass to a toast. This upper cuisine has a huge influence from the French one and in its basic version would be a level above "La cuisine de ma tante Marie" I feel. If you read Pellegrino Artusi's (1820-1911) Italian cookbook "La scienza in cucina e l'arte di mangiar bene" ("Science in the Kitchen and the Art of Eating Well" - role model for Escoffier) then you get a feeling for the Italian version of Europe's upper class kitchen and how it mattered to people.

    • @@sumimaind Would disagree, never been to Tokyo so i cant speak on that. But the food in New York, London or Paris generally isn't great either. Much like Amsterdam and other tourist places there are some restaurants that serve amazing food but the majority is just ok & overpriced or even just bad/bland. I do agree those city's offer more food options, but it's not nearly as tasty as "the same" meal would be in the country it originated from. As for the food scene in the Netherlands and its diversity, i personally dont think it has to be very diverse. The current food scene perfectly showcases the Dutch history and alliances which adds to the authenticity of the culture.

      @LittleLulubee@LittleLulubee2 жыл бұрын
    • @@LittleLulubee there were many, but to mention a few I'd say italians tend to be more outgoing/warm and very spontaneous, whereas dutchies can sometimes appear distant and cold, with a tendency to schedule their day very efficiently rather than living by the day. At the same time, I found Dutch people to tend to mind their own business in the streets, so that if something is wrong with your bike for instance they would let you solve it by yourself; italians may be more prone to come and help when you are experiencing troubles Finally, as an international student in Ams I often experienced how the city moves at two different speeds, conditional on whether you're a local or not: think of the housing market (it's super hard to get uni accommodation if you don't have contacts, whereas if you're Dutch you have most likely been registered on several websites for years and have gotten ahead of the long waiting times thanks to that), or public transport (which is free on weekdays for Dutch students, but internationals can't get any student discount, lol...). This being said, I apologize in advance for generalizing, and acknowledge that individual experiences are certainly varied!

The only thing that sounds like a deal-breaker is how expensive it is and the food options. However, the part about Amsterdam's weather doesn't bother me at all. I like it when it rains and I absolutely hate sunny weather. I burn very easily and I have to resort to always wearing sunblock lotion if I have to be outside during the day for long periods of time. • Not a lot of Dutch people reacting here. Great :) Now I can fulfill the role of the grumpy Dutch person here! Climate: amount of precipitation in Toronto and Amsterdam is actually the same, about 830 millimeters a year. The difference is that in Toronto, the winter is much colder and thus has much more snow. Now I do prefer snow over rain, but if that means that the average day temperature in January is below 0 and the average day temperature in July is above 25... (in Amsterdam it's about 3 in January and 18 in July...)... No.. I rather live here. Toronto has about 400 more sun hours per year than Amsterdam but that's not that strange, since Toronto is at the same latitude as southern France (Marseille), while Amsterdam is even more north than Moosonee in Ontario. Just saying 😉 Food: I'm always amazed how little foreigners here know (even if they've been living here for many years) about Dutch cuisine. I always hope you realize that we do not eat herring, cheese or poffertjes for dinner... 😂 Also, I've been to Toronto many times and it's a great city but the food is not much better or worse than here. And about the diversity..? Both cities are claiming to be the most diverse city on the planet. Since Canada obviously was a colony (and to many First Nations it still is), the fact that it is diverse should not be a surprise. Since Amsterdam has been one of the mayor trading centers since the 17th century, its diversity also shouldn't come as a surprise. It's exactly why housing is so expensive... There are many, many foreign people here. Now, I don't complain about that, you're all welcome here (as long as you at least try to learn some Dutch 😉), but its international mind set and its diversity indeed has its consequences. Both positive (food), and negative (house prices).
